Serena,

You should definite mention US National Grid (or from the World Perspective, I
think Universal Grid is the pertinent label).

It has already been demonstrated to work very well as an addressing method.

Dear all,

on Thursday this week, I am presenting about open source and open data to the
Addressing Group of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a UN organization with
192 member countries [1]. If you know about interesting open source software or
open data related to addressing and/or geocoding, let me know. Anything that I
receive by Wednesday evening, I could include in the presentation.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Open source / open data related to addressing/geocoding

2015-04-21 Thread Clément Igonet

Hi!

Here is the new open project: "Open Earth View". It relies mainly on
X3D format exploitation.

   An example is here: http://www.openarthview.net

   OSM wiki:
   - http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osm2x3d

This project already provides a public webservice to get X3D tiles in
the following format:

http://www.openearthview.net/osm2x3d.php?zoom=_ZOOM_&xtile=_XTILE_&ytile=_YTILE_

   Cheers!

You might want to include something about the different ideas that the
OpenStreetMap community had about addressing schemas:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Proposed_features/House_numbers&oldid=87

Also:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Karlsruhe_Schema
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Addresses
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Nominatim

I also remember a few remarks during the intro of last year's FOSS4G about the
(low) quality of open-source geocoders. Alas, I've been unable to locate a
video recording of the intro (before the first keynote).

I made a quick search and it seems that both OGC services, and more ad
hoc APIs are used for geocoding addresses. Denmark has a more official
looking service

http://danmarksadresser.dk/

for Finland there is an open test service (some open local datasets are
more established)

http://api.okf.fi/console/

These have popped up very recently (few years).

ps: Maybe follow-ups should be only on OSGeo discuss to save bandwidth?
