1) map servers - geoserver, mapserver, etc
2) Geoportals - degree, geonetwork, etc
3) Client side API - openlayers, etc

MapGuide has front-end, rendering, and processing capabilities. If
forced to choose between these, I'd probably go with rendering.

Server (services) and Client (Interfaces), some are both, but I think a 
server component would win out in that instance.  You could also go with 
a third category like server/client
