Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] update sponsorship logos

2016-03-20 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl

One of the two fonts Steven mention in his 2011 search for the fonts (the
Trebuchet) is part of the Microsoft (!) TrueType font pack for the web which,
according the the EULA, can be reproduced and distributed freely [1].

The other one, the LucasFonts Sans Italic [2] is a piece of art by the pretty
famous Dutch font designer Lucas de Groot (now living in Berlin)

According to my sources 50 EUR, for a packed to be used on 5 different PCs [3].

Perhaps we should ask Lucas to give a presentation on font design, use and
copyright as the FOSS4G ;-)

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] update sponsorship logos

2016-03-19 Thread Jody Garnett
What did the dutch logo use? Now is a good time since we need new sponsor
logos and the incubation committee is readjusting what we do for projects.

Lucas did get back to me directly and I am prepared to purchase the fonts
just so we can get back in the game...

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] update sponsorship logos

2016-03-19 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
Hmm, I was a bit too optimistic, I suppose.

In the Dutch logo the Bitstream Vera sans is used, (according to the SVG)

The main text "OSGeo.nl" in our SVG-version is no longer recognizable as text,
it's a bunch of paths

After some fizzling in Inkspace I notice that the Liberation Sans would be a
very good replacement, especially when a touch of horizontal spacing is addd

The Open Sans isn't a good replacement , since it has a very different "g".

Liberation Sans came under a GPL license, but now hold an SIL Open Font License

To be checked: the Google Arimo font

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] update sponsorship logos

2016-03-19 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
I managed to create an account, and seem to be able to buy directly at
lucasfonts [1]

However, according to the license agreement "LucasFonts gives you the right to
use the enclosed font software on one (1) printer and up to five (5) computers
at a single geographic location."

In order to play the game by the rules, this might be a good point to change
the logo slightly and move to open fonts. (as Steven did for the Dutch logo)

Sadly the shop is a bit broken, I can find it for sale for $98 USD via the more
mainstream font websites.

2015-12-24 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
Hi Anita,

In case you haven't found it out yourself yet: the OSgeo_logo_guide (as of
2007) states it's the Vera Sans font:

https://www.gnome.org/fonts/

regards,

Gert-Jan

For your information, the source svg icons are here:

I'd imagine you could do something creative with Platinum,Gold,Silver,Bronze
colours with the logo.

Thanks for the Link Cameron!

Too bad all the label are path elements rather than text elements. Does anyone
of you know which font is used in the logos?

Best wishes,

Anita

Hi Anita,
I suggest adopting the style we used with the OSGeo Advocate logos:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Advocate#Understanding_OSGeo_roles
(You can see the source svg in directory above.)

Regards, Cameron

I'd love to help. Which logos exactly do you need? The marketing repo is
full of different versions of the same/similar logos ...

[OSGeo-Discuss] update sponsorship logos

2015-12-19 Thread Jody Garnett
A cheerful update (and a small request for volunteer help).

Back in October I smarted a working group
 to
"restart" our sponsorship program.

Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas, email, and time.

One smart change, made by Even Rouault, is the renaming sponsorship levels
to Platinum,Gold,Silver,Bronze levels to reduce confusion (for native and
non-native english speakers alike).

With this in mind could I ask for a volunteer to update our sponsorship
logos?

* http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/marketing/logo

I have updated the sponsorship webpage and
will make a proper blog post when we have revised logos to work with.

I think we can edit the SVG ones and then save them out at different sizes.
