Yep, that sounds like a mobile phone. They'll interfere with just
about anything - remember they are transmitting with enough power to be
picked up by a base station that could be miles away. They also
"chatter" to the base station even when you're not actually in a call.
The only sure way to shut them up is to turn them off! And it may not
be anything to do with the bluetooth either - you could try turning it
off, but I doubt it will make a difference.

Thanks shawkie. I installed your new version of Borg and started
playing around with it; very nice so far (except that I can't control
my 2nd Squeezebox).

Keep up the good work :)

Mike

ps - I tried installing and running the latest SlimServer 6.5 build
just to look at your skin, but I couldn't get SlimServer to build its
database from the music on my ReadyNAS. So I just deleted 6.5 and
decided to wait a bit to try again.

I did try changing the channels an not much helped.

Interestingly, but annoyingly, I beleive that the bluetooth on my Moto

I've heard the same very specific, but hard to describe, pattern of
clicks, and muffled beeps, emante from various devices in a variety of
settings including the following:

1. The aforementioned wireless speakers.
2. The wired subwoofer in my living room.
3. A plugged in, but not connected speaker phone in an office
conference room at work.

4. A wireless Sony baby monitor.

It seems totally random as to when it occurs. And very perplexing.
I figured I would ring in on this. I've owned the Advent 900Mhz
wireless speakers for around 6 years and have been using them with the
wireless slimserver for about 3 years. I don't use them for the main
speakers but use them next to the bed while going to sleep. I have
had an occasional loss of signal or when listening to music with
extreme bass it might overpower the speakers but a little tweaking of
the transmitter has fixed this problem. I do agree that the sound is
not as good as wired speakers but it works out for me. I was getting
a strange hum that could be heard in between songs but found out that
it was the cordless telephone base that was next to the speaker. I
lowered the antenna on the base and the hum went away. If your not
going to crank these speakers they seem to be a good option.

I've never seen a comparison of both systems, but it shouldn't be too
hard to round up enough info on each to make your own comparison. For
info about the qnap with slimserver installed, try www.cooltopia.com.
There is also a LONG thread (approaching 700 posts!) on the qnap in

and Progressive are the same outfit, or even related).

There's info on the LinkStation HD-HG hardware on the
www.linkstationwiki.org site, but the short story is that it has a
266MHz PowerPC processor (I forget the model number) and 128MB of RAM.

Also at the moment it doesn't scan your library unless you run the

So unless you want to test and can put up with the 'issues' I'd wait a

2006-06-26 Thread bklaas

There were several weeks there where 6.5 was not stable, but I think
we're now coming out of that status. I have an updated subversion
checkout and it is doing a decent job. One thing I'm having trouble
with is when I select music through "Browse Music Folder" rather than
"Browse Artists/Albums/Genres", it doesn't play. I consider that a
minor annoyance compared to the state it was in a few weeks ago.

The database changes that went in that introduced the instability (they
were good changes, just took a bit to get the kinks cleared up) required
some changes to the skin, particularly in the formatting of URLs. I
believe I have fixed everything, but let me know if anything is amiss.

cheers,

I have found colour problems with tan also, but only in the TrackStat

Sorry, I didn't want to be unhelpful, it's just that I've never heard
anything good about 900 MHz wireless speakers. The audible
interference you mention seems to be the main complaint.

The new digital versions ought to be better but would interfere with a
wireless network.

There was a mention of an IR transmission method, which would be worth
looking into. It would be line-of-sight of course.

Still, nothing beats good old copper.

2006-06-26 Thread Mark Lanctot

It depends what frequency the wireless speakers use.

The older analog models use 900 MHz, which shouldn't interfere with the
Squeezebox 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal.

However newer digital transmission models use 2.4 GHz:

http://tinyurl.com/67ggx

which would interfere with a wireless network.

So it's between a rock and a hard place. While the 900 MHz versions
won't interfere, their sound quality is quite poor. The 2.4 GHz
versions should sound better but will interfere with the Squeezebox's
data network.

Keep in mind that wireless speakers aren't really wireless anyway.
They need power.

What kind of NAS are you using?

Those are two different things - merely passing the music on to another
application is filesharing and is accomplished by any NAS right out of
the box. Streaming using SlimServer means running SlimServer, which is
only possible for a few NAS devices and can be quite demanding for such
an underpowered device.

Increasing the HDD size won't do anything. You're having bandwidth
problems.

What's your network like? NAS wired to a wireless router and wireless
SB? Take a look here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkProblemsSecondGuide

If your NAS is connected wirelessly to the router then that's something
you should address first. Try to limit wireless communications to one
hop.

[slim] Re: Softsqueeze 2.5

2006-06-26 Thread jbuccino

Version 2.7 works fine for me on a Mac OS X Powerbook 10.4.6. The
scrolling between screens is still a bit jerky (compared to version
2.3) but it is improved from 2.4 and 2.5 and cosmetic only. (It was
really nice in 2.3 though.) I have had no problem playing music and the
double key press issue is solved.

Thanks for your work on this.

further to this, yes extreme stutter...plays one bar(note) every few
secondsie would take about 1 hour to play one song!! Note the NAS
is wired but the SB3 is wireless. I am using applelossless but testing
with MP3s is the same. Incidentally the same tracks will stream off the
NAS direct to itunes perfectly but not wirelessly to the SB. As a result
I am going to use the NAS as offline backup only and increase the HD
size internally of the server.

Would be interesting if you got the JackPC working well, controlling a
touch screen. This is something that has appealed to me since i first
saw the JackPC.

[slim] Re: Duplicate track entries in 6.3. Anyone else?

2006-06-26 Thread ModelCitizen

Hi Siduhe,
My files are flac and I don't use the compilation tag. All tracks are
tagged with the individual artist name and only share the album name in
common.
I have in the past resaved the file in my tag editor and managed (after
a few tries) to get the album to list only once. However, it is much
worse than usual and affects many more albums and I'm beginning to
think I've screwed up my SlimServer installation (by adding perl files
from individual fixes, and not the nightly as a whole). I'll completely
reinstall tonight and see what happens.
Thanks.
MC
