Re: [slim] Re: Saving playlists with remote

2006-12-13 Thread Phil Meyer
My only problem with the add.hold button is that sometimes I get
impatient (in a hurry) and let go prematurely (let the ribbing begin!)
Then I have to go rescue the track that I've accidently removed from
the playlist. Would it possible to reverse these? ie. press + for
PlaylistMan, and +.hold for remove track from playlist? In my
experience (albeit very limited) that would work more smoothly.

You can achieve that by creating a custom IR map file.

I can't remember if Custom.map inherits Default.map, or whether you have to
duplicate all function keys. You may want to experiment, but I know the
following works:

In your slimserver installation folder, go into server\IR and copy Default.map
to Custom.map. Add the following to the end of the file:

[playlist]
add.single  = addmenu
add.hold= add

In the web UI, go to your player settings - Remote. Select Custom for remote
button functions.

The default button functions remain unchanged, so you can swap back if you like.

Re: [slim] rescan at launch

2006-12-13 Thread Phil Meyer
Would it be possible to allow the option of re-scanning the library on
launching the server?
It would be much better if the server could check if there is new music
and if there is new music re-scan this music in as it is launched.

I would vote against this.

Slimserver has in the past rescanned the music library at start up (not sure if
it was intentional or a bug), and many people, including me, lobbied to get
this functionality removed.

Slimserver runs as an automatic service on my box, so it runs when XP starts
up. This causes disk thrashing and slows the startup/log in cycle. Most of
the time I know when I need to update my library, and prefer to do it manually
when I am not using the PC for other activities.

There is a rescan plugin, that can be configured to run a scheduled rescan -
e.g. run it every morning.

Someone also wrote a windows shell registry patch that allows a right-click on
a folder to rescan just that folder. So, after adding new music, you can
rescan the folder at that time. It may also be possible to configure some
post-rip action in your ripping software to automatically rescan slimserver
upon adding new music?

I guess there's nothing wrong with requesting an auto-rescan upon server
startup, but I would opt for it to be optional, with the default setting being
turned off.

Just a thought, I recently installed Internet Explorer V7 with add ons,
installed OK, but when I tried to open IE I got the message 100%CPU

that I tried to open slimserver and because it uses IE it kept hanging.
Have you installed IE7?

I don't know if modems support connecting via USB and ethernet
simultaneously. That would be a highly unconventional setup and I
doubt your PC would be able to talk to your SB, even if interne

get a modem with a router and a 4 port switch built in (like the
netgear DG834 or one of the other of hundreds of devices like this).
Don't connect the modem to your PC via USB--connect it via ethernet.

I have a Voyager 220 which I use with an ethernet switch, but I don't
use the USB port. There is no indication in the handbook that it is
able to make a connection between the ethernet port and a PC on USB. I
believe it is designed to connect both the USB and ethernet ports to the
internet only. Squeezebox would therefore not be able to connect to a
slimserver running on the PC but would be able to connect to
Squeezenetwork.

A Voyager 210 would be a risky venture and I would recommend an ADSL
router such as a DG834G or similar - not expensive.

Start the scanner manually as described a little up the thread. You can

I've got too much on my plate right now to think about it. Don't want

Nobody wants an exploding head; I'd agree with that. The syntax isn't
tough: in your terminal, change to the directory containing the DTS
files (likely with the 'cd' command; OSX has a linux-like shell,
right?), copy spdifconvert.py into that directory (using the Mac's GUI
for file browsing if that's easier) and run spdifconvert.py with no
arguments to check it's available. Then just run it several times,
each time with a DTS file as argument (ie you type 'spdifconvert.py',
or whatever works for you, then a space, then the name of a DTS file).

If you decide to take a look at it, do ask for any help you need in the
other thread.

BTW, smst, have you seen the DVD of Porcupine Tree at Rockpalast? It's
pretty incredible, if you can find it. I think it was shot for German
television and is tough to find in the States.
I haven't; sounds good. Burning Shed seem to have it for download but
I don't see a CD there... I'm in the UK so hopefully it'll be a touch
easier to find. :)

[slim] Re: AACPlus fails with 6.5.0

2006-12-13 Thread raff

sorry to bump this conversation but has anyone managed to solve this
issue?
I'm also trying to stream aacplus radio station but because I'm using
remote slimserver I'm forced to use bitrate limiting.
While I generally do not have problems with any other formats aacplus
fails as soon as you switch bitrate limiting on.

Slimserver should use custom-convert.conf entry for aap-mp3 but
instead it thinks it can decode aacplus stream directly and fails
miserably.

help anyone?

Nothing has been done. There is a bit of uncertainty but if there is
any resolution from the developers it will not be until 7.0.
Officially it was not intended that streams be capable of being bit
rate limited so AFAICT the functionality of bit rate limiting aacplus
in 6.3 was fortuitous.

You should check whether the stream in question also provides an MP3
stream - most aacplus station also provide a lower quality mp3.

I may look at the code in more detail to see what is happening but to
be honest getting aacplus was all I needed.

I second (actually third or fourth, I think) getting an ADSL

and you just have to bin it when your needs change.

However, you might want to get a wireless one too. You'll buy some
wi-fi products soon, so you may as well spend the £60-odd now and get
it over with. One product to configure - much the best way.

2006-12-13 Thread Paul_B

Agree with Peter go with a VPN it possible. If not then limit the source
address range that you are opening the port to on your firewall. You can
always look at your firewall log to see what IP address you came in on
at what time.

As for buffer overflows it seems to be the easiest method to find an
exploit. I have seen security guys pass a string of characters that are
unique. The oveflowing buffer then passes on the remainder of the string
and so you can work out at what point the buffer oveflows. Also web
servers may have exploits that allow foreseen access; in the old days
you could navigate a computer hosting Windows IIS4 by passing directory
commands in http and as most installs were in the default c:\inetsrv you
could do what you liked

In the sub canDirectStream in file /Slim/Player/Protocols/HTTP.pm -
 line 189
 if (defined $command  $command eq '-' || $format eq 'mp3') {

The || $format eq 'mp3' seems to overide any bitrate conversion and
 makes sure direct streaming happens.
 When I remove this test
 - MP3 stations with low bitrates do not start lame.
 - MP3 stations with high bit rates lame is started but no sound comes
 from
 SB.

As soon as I've done it aacplus started working as it should with or
without bitrate limiting.
I'm not sure if this will have some side effects but for now I'm one
happy guy ;) at long last I can stream my favorite radio from my

[slim] Re: Missing songs

2006-12-13 Thread Justme

Hi Mherger,

Once again, thanks for your persistent help

I hope you don't get too frustrated with my lack of skills here, but I
simply don't follow. I'm not sure where this log should appear as I
don't get a prompt or see any field which suggests a location.

Although, I suspect it won't help.

There is something really really bizarre going on here. Let me
explain.

First of all, it doesn't stop at any particular folder. I have all my
music stored in one general folder called h:\music

Within that folder are 576 separate sub folders. Each one contains a
single artist.

In other words, h:\music\coldplay or h:\music\led zeppelin etc.

Now, normally the search is set to look in h:\music, essentially the
root of my music files. In the past, this worked perfectly, then all of
a sudden, when trying a new nightly release, these problems arose.

Now, although it doesn't find all my songs, it doesn't seem to stop
anywhere in particular. It has songs from folders everywhere from A
through to Z, it just misses a load throughout.

In fact, I don't think it even cares where it looks. Let's put it this
way, and I think this is the core of the problem.

If I set the music folder to search to be h:\music\snow patrol, we
should assume, it will only look in that folder which has music from
the band snow patrol. (61 songs in total). No other bands are in the
snow patrol folder.

However, it finds 480 songs, from 135 artists - none of which are
actually snow patrol, and none of the mp3's reside in the folder it was
supposed to search.

This is the real problem. I mean, why would it find a song like this
example below, when it was set to look in this folder for new songs:
h:\music\snow patrol (the song it found below is stored in
H:\MUSIC\Cold Play)

Title: Clocks
Artist: , , Album: No Album
Genre: , ,
File Format: MP3
Duration: 5:07
Comment: Media Center / 11.0.314 / 5
File Length: 4,921,472 Bytes

ID3 Tag Version: ID3v2.3.0
Location: H:\MUSIC\Cold Play\Coldplay - Clocks.mp3

Maybe, somehow there is a registry setting that got corrupted, and when
I uninstall slimserver, to reinstall again, it doesn't fix this. Is
there a forced uninstaller that clears every slimserver registry
setting away?

There has to be something really odd here, for it to look into a
totally different folder than where it was told to look.

The Porcupine Tree DVD is VIDEO, not audio. I think the copy I saw was

Anyhow I don't really understand the reasoning of the developers. If

[slim] Re: Missing songs

2006-12-13 Thread ceejay

One reason it would find music in another folder would be if you have
playlists which refer to that other music. In your server settings -
basic page, you have places to specify locations for both music library
and playlists. Try clearing the playlists entry and just specifying a
music library location.

also make sure you are not using MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer or iTunes
integration - both of those will cause SS to see other music.

Then make sure you are doing a full clear and rescan, not just a scan
for new or changed music.

Michael's advice for getting more logging information was referring to
running SS from a command prompt. If you are in Windows, get a Commnad
Prompt window (usually in Accessories). You will probably need to
change to the SS directory:

 cd c:\Program Files\slimserver\server

Then type

 scanner --help

to see the options. For example

 scanner --d_info --d_scan --logfile c:\logfile.txt

which will create a lofile in the name you specify at the end of the
line.

If slimserver is stopped you can also start it from the command line in
the same way, specifying debug and other flags.

typically router upgrades wipe the old configuration. Log into the
router and make sure that encryption and mac address blocking are
still like you want them.

You can also set a static IP on your Squeezebox...

[slim] Re: Ideas for Squeezebox 4

2006-12-13 Thread ehjones

My 2 pence:

I wouldn't want to pay any extra for the hardware required to
accomodate external storage. It seems like a silly idea to me, but like
others have said, that's MY OPINION! (although I am right of course ;-)
) A more flexible option might be for slimserver to monitor external
storage on the server machine and make this available from the
squeezebox as soon as possible. I would have thought this could be
easily implemented with the current squeezebox.

I think slimdevices need to be very careful with adding new features.
You may think your own budget is much the same as everyone else's, but
for me the squeezebox was right on the limit here in the UK. Very few
of my friends would want to spend a similar amount on something like
this. For me the squeezebox makes it possible to use great audio
hardware and a great interface with my own dirt cheap server hardware
in the background. As soon as server type functions get moved into the
squeezebox the cost will surely rocket.

Squeezebox 4 should have yet a larger/higher res screen! And definately
VFD, nothing else can compare. You can stick your colour screens where
the sun don't shine ;-)

[slim] Zone Alarm blocks some cookies

2006-12-13 Thread Diana

Friends Every time the SS web page refreshes (every 10 secs?), my
ZoneAlarm privacy adviser pops up to say 'Privacy has blocked
cookies'.

Despite the apparent blocking, SS seems to be working OK. I've tried
telling ZA to allow localhost (i.e. its IP address) to set cookies;
I've tried doing the same for the SB's IP address. Nothing seems to
put a stop to these every-ten-seconds popups.

Yes, I could disable ZA. But turning off internet security does not
seem like a very wise solution to a minor irritation.

So what other URLs is SS using routinely to operate the web interface
by setting cookies? If I knew, I could try telling ZA to ignore them.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

2006-12-13 Thread Ken

I was briefly tempted to upgrade (I am currently running 6.2.2 on XP
with three SB2s and an SB1). My reasoning being I wanted to acquire a
Nokia 770 and have a new toy to play with. But when I saw all the
problems people were having I re-considered as it appears that
playlists are an issue and I particularly use a playlist to listen to
DAB radio using DABBAR. So the priority had to be decided on why do I
have this; it's to listen to music, if that breaks then what's the
point (I do like a quiet life :) ).

So I will patiently wait until all appears to be working reasonably ok
and voodoo is not required to make the installation work ok.

Perhaps then the new Nokia will be available!!

[slim] Re: what to use for CD storage?

2006-12-13 Thread sc53

I used leather bound binders that hold about 60 CDs and booklet. I found
them at www.handstands.com (they are the Large CD/DVD Binders and you
can add extra pages to them up to about 60 CDs before the binders start
to bulge too much). CompUSA, Staples and Office Depot carry them in the
stores or you can order online, which I had to do when I found that I
needed 17 binders just to free my shelves of my classical CD collection
alone. I guess that means I had about 1000 classical CDs. I divided up
the collection by period of music (early music through modern) and put
the binders on a bookshelf. They look pretty nice, kind of like photo
binders or scrapbooks, about 1 1/2 inches wide with labels on which I
printed the period of music stuffed inside. I had to bite the bullet
and just throw out the plastic cases, even though some of the double
and triple box sets had some nice graphics on the boxes that I pitched.
I filled 6 large outdoor garbage bags with cases. They weighed a ton. I
freed up 7 shelves of my CD wall shelves for my jazz and acoustic
collection, which I listen much more frequently to these days. Still, I
guess I need to stop collecting music. There is just too much plastic
involved, taking up too much space!
I bought some extra binders in case I think of other discrete music
collections I can house in them instead of on the shelves--like
Soundtracks, or 80's music, or Grunge, etc.

I figured as much, but what the heck; I need to be more patient, in

Reprogram Xilinx? (Press and hold 1 while power-cycling.)

It's not as drastic as a factory reset, which reprograms the Xilinx
anyway if I'm not mistaken, and the Xilinx handles a lot of the audio
processing. Plus you won't have to re-enter your WPA password.

2006-12-13 Thread ultrachrome

I've never really liked binders in general. My desire is to actually
put the CDs in a storage facility for the time being and then determine
a permanent storage solution after I move.

I did decide the other night to ditch the majority of my jewel cases
and ordered sleeves from Jazzloft.

Fortunately or not, the boxes I ordered 5 days ago from Amazon haven't
shown up yet. I got a ship notice yesterday but today I got an email
from Amazon showing a refund for the entire amount.

But with the space savings afforded by sleeves, I won't need so many
boxes.

Yeah, that's the lost MAC address bug. Once it does this, it doesn't

Changing it back apparently works well.

delicate. The Macbook (two months old, broken DVD, scratched case,
flaky wireless, flaky camera) gathers dust most of the time while my
ugly black Thinkpad (one year old, some case scratches where I took

Squeezeboxes are not built for being handled like laptops are supposed
to be... that would change with a built-in knob. The whole design
would need to get tougher, in case it gets knocked over. Remember the

Maybe I'm out of touch, but I have a whole different set of priorities
when thinking about what I'd like to see in a SB4. What I'd like to see
is an emphasis on sound quality. Get rid of the display altogether and
put it where it belongs, along with its power supply requirements, in
the remote. Use the AKM DAC of the Transporter, and only put analog,
coaxial and optical outs. Design a discrete analog section and end the
debate about opamps altogether. It should go without saying that the
expertise brought to bear on the design of the power supply for the
Transporter should be replicated in a SB4. Thats all. I'd be willing to
pay $1000 for this model as long as the audio quality matches, or
exceeds, that of the Transporter. As I'm already burnt to a crisp,
there's no need for me to don the Nomex suit.

[slim] ETA for 6.5.1?

2006-12-13 Thread Tarn

I'm using SlimServer 6.5.0 on a Media PC, accessing it remotely from a
Windows tablet with IE.

This works pretty well, but I keep hitting one of the 6.5.0 bugs (IE
fails to refresh now playing pane) regularly.

I really don't want to switch to one of the daily drops of 6.5.1 if I
don't have to, but I don't want to wait much longer either.

Anyone know of an approximate ETA for 6.5.1?

Failing that, is there a particular drop of 6.5.1 that is considered to
be more stable than others?

regardless of how neat they may be, violates that.

That's why I keep looking at Harmony remotes... and (*cough*) it would
be nice if Logitech would make one optimized for SB. Something with
roughly the form factor of a Nokia770, but that just controlled the SB.
A bit of custom code on the controller and matching code in Slimserver

[slim] Re: Ideas for Squeezebox 4

2006-12-13 Thread Tarn

I have to agree with the display in the remote concept.

But I'll do you one better:

Leave the squeezebox pretty much the way it is (except for possibly
better DRM support).

Have your current remote (more or less).

Also, have a fancy new remote that includes a display similar to the
squeezeboex display.

To make that work, of course, you need the remote to be a wireless-g/b
remote talking to SlimServer.

Now suddenly your remote can work without IR, the squeezebox can be in
the closet with your audio gear, your remote can easily switch between
controlling the many different squeezeboxes within your house and
you've got a convenient one-stop shopping audio controller.

The probelm is that nobody will want to stop there -- they'll want to
turn the remote into a web browsing camera phone with a color touch
screen which runs its batteries down every two hours. Sigh.

But if you can avoid the bloat, you'll be able to sell the fancy remote
for less than the cost of the squeezebox, and people will actually buy
it.

Take a look at the tomshardware link above for starters. Intel's 'new'
Core2Duo for the desktop is an awesome processor choice paired with the
right motherboard. The 2.13Ghz you saw is an E6400 and due to the design
of the CPU is outperforms processors well over 3Ghz. So, it's not so
much that you are getting dual processors as it is you are getting
radically new technology for the desktop that vastly outperforms
existing components. AMD touted for a while that it's not about the
clock speed and it bit Intel in the butt until now.

[slim] Confusion: No FLAC or Ogg, just MP3 ??

2006-12-13 Thread mdzmura

I have searched the forums and not found answers to my two biggest
questions (although I have seen one of the questions with no good
answers):

1. I have a ton of FLAC stuff, a ton of MP3 stuff, and a fair amount of
Ogg. All of these files are under a common root in a Linux ext3 file
system (about 100G worth). I am running Slimserver 6.5 and serving the
files to Squeezebox 3 and to a copy of Softsqueeze running on another
Linux box. No iTunes, just a bunch of locally ripped music.

Slimserver has been given ONE directory to look under, which is the
parent of all of my music. It found ONLY the MP3 stuff. (A good bit
of the FLAC and MP3 are dups with the same tags, because I keep 160k or
192k MP3 transcoded from the FLAC for my flash-based MP3 players. In
these cases, I would of course prefer the Slimserver to serve up the
FLAC to the Squeezebox).

Slimserver found ONLY the MP3 stuff. None of the FLAC or Ogg is in the
database. Nothing in the documentation or online seems to indicate why
this would be the case. As mentioned above, in cases where there are
lossy and lossless versions of the same track, I want Slimserver to
stream the lossless file.

2. Second Question may be related to the first, and may also be a
misunderstanding of the operation of the scanning process: When I use
the web interface to rescan my music files, I don't see any indication
of either progress or completion. The next day there are no new music
files. Nothing in the /tmp/slimserver.log file seems to indicate that
scanning is occuring.

Any thoughts on either of these would be appreciated. I am only able
to serve up about 100 of my 600 or so CD's at this point, and am really
missing the others...

Thanks,
Mark

Anyone know of an approximate ETA for 6.5.1?

If you look at other postings and bugzilla, there's an impending
firmware release (71) that is being internally tested that you may want
to wait for. I've also been asking about an official 6.5.1 release date
in the beta forum for quite some time; the replies have been mainly It
will be ready when it's ready. I do think that 3 months for a
third-level dot release is a little long; but more frustrating is the
lack of information about what is holding up the release (other than
what can be gleaned via Bugzilla) and what particular bugs they feel
they must be fixed prior to release.

Though there are differing opinions on the matter, I feel that getting
a reasonable 6.5.1 out there sooner for reviewers and the general
public to feel better about the product makes sense, following up with
a 6.5.2 or whatever to finish up.

Mark That's the answer, of course! I came across this when trying
to solve a problem with my antivirus:

which is more or less exactly what you wisely advise - avoid overkill!

Many thanks.

[slim] Re: Ideas for Squeezebox 4

2006-12-13 Thread stoobie-doo

Seems to me that the design principles need to be locked down first
before a feature set can be chosen, for me its:
* Designed to work with the stereo and sit in the home theater rack
* Be simple to setup and use
* Work with lots of audio codecs and DRMs
* Find and play music out on the web
* Sound nice

So what would I like to see added:
* Video out for UI - Not everyone will want to take advantage of this
one, but it seems to me there are enough times that the option of an
easier to use interface would be worth it
* More space for firmware - More space means more Codecs and less work
transcoding at the server
* Bigger memory to buffer - Am I the only one who still has a love hate
relationship with my wifi network
* Video out - At some point people are going to want to stream their
iTune downloads, home movies, and other items
* RF or wifi remote - if I have video out for the UI (or display on the
remote); I don't need to see the display and it can sit in the cabinet,
or I can be in another room and turn on the music
* Better DACs - 'nuff said
* A small amp and option for headphone out or small speakers - isn't
that a better alarm clock solution than docking your iPod?
