Re: [slim] Firmware upgrade problems

2008-03-03 Thread y360

You need to upgrade to latest SC7 which is needed now otherwise you end
up toggling firmwares when using SN and SlimServer 6.x.x

I guess we're going to see this issue popping up quite frequently in
the forum. I've counted several bewildered users so far.

Andy, if you're reading this - perhaps the firmware downgrade error
message on the SB should suggest installing SC7

To summarize:

81 is the firmware that was in effect with SlimServer 6.5.4 and the old
SN

86 is the firmware in latest SC 7.0 and the new SN

86 is required for Pandora Rhapsody in the new SN

[slim] SC7 - What is Official Release date?

2008-03-03 Thread ralphpnj

Like the title says: As of this moment (Monday March 3rd) what is the
expected date for the official release of Squeeze Center 7?

And few other questions while I'm at it.

Will SC7 install over SlimServer thus saving my music library and other
settings? Or will I have to do a complete rescan of my music library and
reset all the various settings? I do understand that I will need new
plugins for SC7, so that is not an issue.

Thanks for your attention and answers.

I don't think the date really matters. If you're using SN you better
upgrade to SC7, which is pretty stable as it is now.
I did have to rescan the music library, but that's a minor issue IMHO.

Rescanning one's music library may indeed be a minor issue for some
people but the last time I did a rescan it took well over 8 hours. I
hope that the music library scanning function of SC7 has been improved
over that of Slim Server since I'm not looking forward to another 8
hour plus rescan.

Yes, using the sleep in this fashion does keep the current playlist, to
resume just hit play (twice?) on the remote.

How hard would it be to implement 'sleep' at the end of the NEXT song?
Sometimes when heading out the door, the 15min option is too long.

Cheers!

better. I've ordered the Duet so it comes to mind that when browsing

This seems like a good solution in the absence of a server solution.

Do you know how I can automate retagging to the above format?

I use MP3Tag for normal tagging but can't think how to do it using

I'm afraid I agree. I've just read the OP and my first thought was to
check all the things that I then found SuperQ had already suggested
(quite diplomaticly IMO) in order to determine whether the problem was
real or not.

I can understand the frustration at finding an expensive piece of
equipment to possibly be broken, but this community is a collection of
(in the main) friendly, knowledgable and well intentioned volunteers
and thus civil behaviour is central to keeping people coming back.

I'd suggest calling Logitech support too.

MP3Tag is a good tool for the job.

Create an action to Format Value
Field: Album
Format String: Single - %artist%

Load all of your singles and apply. If they are spread throughout your
other albums you can load them all and sort by album. This will place
all the blank albums at the top.

Hope this helps, David

[slim] Computer hang or Slimserver stops

2008-03-03 Thread ganjastone

Hi,

2 very weird scenarios:

1. Not SlimServer related but maybe someone solved this before.
Computer hangs when accessing 3 FLAC files (Computer hates Alanis :) ).
ChkDsk found nothing. It is an XP Pro machine. It hangs even if I try to
copy them. to override this I renamed them to a different extension so
that SlimServer won't accidentally access them. Any idea what could go
wrong? system logs shows nothing. as if there is a power outage when I
access those files.

2. 2am daily, music stops on all 4 SB3s. very annoying as baby kid used
to sleep with classical music. It is like a daily alarm. baby cries at
2:01am, I wake up, go restart music and back to bed... no alarm or
scheduled activity I could find on server, nor rescan. all these
happens between 8-9am. must get some help on this as baby refuse to
sleep without classical music.

Thanks

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Does Album Catalogue Creator (RC5+) create a trustworthy
output?

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

killie99;274593 Wrote:
I'm begining to think this is a squeezecenter problem. If I do a scan of
my music directory, sometimes some of the compilation albums show as not
being by various artists but show as by one of the artists on the
album. When this happens the album catalog creator shows the
compilation albums as by 1 of the artists on the album rather than
 various.

It would explain the strange behaviour of ACC. ACC really only queries
the database. The query returns regular albums by artist as well as
Various artists. The various artists are albums which are classified as
various artist by SC. This however is often not true. A regular album
with one or more featuring artists on it is classified by SC as Various
Artist album.
ACC therefor determines for all Various artist albums the actual
Artist. It does so by checking the artist performing most of the album
songs. If this is true for more than half of the tracks it changes the
Various artist to the orginal artist (in a temporary DB table). It
works really well presenting 'true' results.
After all this is done it uses the temporary table to generate the
actual catalog.

So having said this I can only say that the problem must be somewhere
in the database i would say

Re: [slim] Transporter knob seems bust.

2008-03-03 Thread Rodney_Gold

SuperQ is persisting in telling me what I am experiencing is normal ,
despite my original post and subsequent posts explaining that it is NOT
normal. The only one to have given me any direction or help is SEAN.

This was my original post

Very scrapey/squeaky sound when I turn it and very hard to turn , like
something is binding , it's brand new.

Now does that sound normal or the way it's supposed to work or how
does anyone extrapolate that what Im documenting might be me mistaking
the normal operation as broken when its not?

As to the unit itself, the remote works just fine and the only reason I
tried the knob is that I took it to my upstairs system and have the unit
right next to me , my SB is downstairs. If I have to send it back to get
fixed, then I will just pass on that and live with the issue.

I think you have to realise that scrapey/squeaky and hard to turn
are somewhat subjective terms. I think SuperQ was also trying to
understand exactly what symptoms you are experiencing in order to
perhaps give better advice.

You said you are used to using internet-forums. Then you'd also know
that helping someone with a problem often means asking lots of obvious
and trivial questions. It doesn't mean that the askee is implying that
the asker is not up to par.

Finally these forums (-audiophiles) are ususally very civilized, and so
one can assume that if anyone takes the time to answer your question,
they are doing it to help, not pester.

Regards Bjørn

bunch of non-critical bugs that you've been living with for a while. I'm

Re: [slim] Wi-Fi Internet Clock Radio?

2008-03-03 Thread sander

99 bucks for a Soundbridge Radio is quite a find, but at the usual price
$299, I'd pony up more for the Revo Pico at $319 or the Blixstation (if
they ever offer them stateside).

It is impressive that it works with Slimserver out of the box though,
I'll have to keep that in mind. My main gripes with that unit have been
the lack of an Ethernet jack and the alarm doesn't support different
weekdays, which seems inconceivable that they would leave that out.

How is your library organized in respect to folders? It's best to have
one folder per album (or per disc from the album). Other approaches
tend to not work well in SlimServer.

Re: [slim] Inconsistent scanning of the music library

2008-03-03 Thread killie99

for normal albums the folders are by artist then album and compilation
albums are in various artists and then album name. I believe this is a
pretty standard way of organising albums:

eg
flac
.david bowie
.ziggy stardust
.pink floyd
animals
.various artists
Music of the millenium disc 1
Music of the millenium disc 2

What I can't understand is why scanning the music library gives
different results when absolutely nothing has changed in the
library/squeezecenter. Something in the scanning algorithm seems a bit
flakey for that to happen.

Were the above screenshots of back to back scans? Maybe the scan
didn't complete on one of them for some reason. VA consolidation
happens as one of the last phases of a scan. Check your Server
Status page to see whether the last scan completed.

I've always done MAC filtering. I've never considered it nearly the
hassle of setting up encryption.

Enter in the MAC addresses you want to allow/disallow, and you're off.
It seems pretty easy to me. Maybe it's the firmware I use (either

MAC filtering seems braindead to me.

It is indeed, because as well as being a pain it simply doesn't work :)
MAC spoofing is trivial, in fact it's even easier than breaking WEP.

As for ease of use, compare these procedures for adding a new device:

1) Startup new device and enter network setup
2) Select SSID, enter key
3) Relax, safe in the knowledge that your network is still secure

or

1) Startup new device and enter network setup
2) Try to figure out what the MAC is (is it on a label on the bottom?
is it in a config screen somewhere?)
3) Write MAC down (careful!)
4) Log into router from some other device
5) Add new MAC to access table save config
6) Go back to new device, go back into network setup and complete it
7) Relax, with the false sense of security that the MAC filtering will
actually stop anyone getting into your network.

Personally, I keep the key for my network on a big label on the front
of the router. That way, if guests come over and want to connect up
it's easy for them. Having them all give me their MAC addresses so I
can add them (and then try to remember who is who months later when I
want to clean up the list) would be a huge hassle.

Another neat way to manage this is to use two networks, one secured
that your computer's attach to and one that is not for guests. There
are alternate firmwares for the Linksys WRT54GLs that will do this and
is pretty slick.

completed. I've tried it with only a small number of albums (around 50)

Re: [slim] Announcement: SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-03 Thread pichonCalavera

Yeah, great news and congratulations, it's been fun seeing how
Squeezecenter reaches release status.

Any news on when the Debian stable repository will be updated?, I tried
to update now but I did not fetch any upgrade.

Re: [slim] Announcement: SqueezeCenter 7.0

2008-03-03 Thread slimnick

Congratulations on the new release - SqueezeCenter is a huge improvement
over the old SlimServer.

I'm currently running a previous nightly (v17665) on fedora, and have
the yum repo set-up with the squeezecenter-release repo enabled. Do you
know when the repository will be updated so I can just 'yum update' to
the stable release?

Thanks
Nick.
