I was wondering if there might not be a way to give us a way when we're
scrolling artists (or other really long lists), to jump forward to the
 next letter in the alphabet...
There is already a fairly straightforward way to get all artists (or
albums, etc) starting with a given letter: the Search mechanism. But
IMHO it takes rather too many button presses, and with my somewhat
smaller library (about 400 artists) it's quicker to just scroll the
main list.

Having a way to get quickly to a particular letter of the alphabet
would be a godsend, but I can't say I much like your suggested method.
I guess it would be better than nothing, though.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the Rio Karma portable
player got this right years ago. Its top menu was an A-Z arrangement,
so you could start by selecting the initial letter of the required
artist. In addition, the first item in the top level menu is all
artists: selecting that gives you a complete scrollable list.

In concept the Controller could easily operate in an inverse of this
approach: the top level menu is the entire scrollable list (ie. as it
is now), with an additional first menu item being A-Z. Selecting the
A-Z option would then display a scrollable alphabet of initial
letters.

As noted above, this topic has come up before with similar explanations
posted for price differences.
funkstar;278361 Wrote:
Basically it comes down to several factors:
 1. Incresed taxes in the EU compaired to the US
 2. Increase in the cost of doing business in the EU, meaning the markup

 3. They can charge more so they do. Simple business sense.
1. Differences in VAT, sales taxes can certainly lead to regional price
variation, but nothing on the scale of the Logitech price differences.
2. How much does it cost to operate an ecommerce website which, in many
cases, is the extent of the local Logitech presence?
3. This is the most plausible explanation, although more on this
below.

ElFishi;279080 Wrote:

This is where it gets interesting. A bit of web-surfing shows that in
many countries there are distributors offering the SqueezeBox range at
prices that pretty much the local currency equivalent of the US price.
That's certainly what I have found in Australia. If any of the
explanations other than 3 held water, surely it would mean these
distributors would be selling at prices much closer to the Logitech
local price. So although Logitech can obviously charge what they like,
at current prices they are unlikely to sell many units directly outside
of Australia. So it would seem that they would prefer to give the retail
margin to the other distributors and just pick up the wholesale margin.

Re: [slim] Why is SlimServer so slow?

2008-03-13 Thread DanielTheGreat

funkstar, thanks for the explanations about the SC/SB conversations. Is
there a central repository for such pearls of wisdom, or does one just
acquire them through osmosis?
smst, thanks very much for the metaflac code (metaflac came with my
FLAC download). Using your command I created rrg.bat with just one
line:
for %%f in (*.flac) do metaflac.exe --remove-replay-gain %%f
Then I just had to open a DOS box in each of my DTS sub-directories (a
simple right-click operation for each one) and issue the RRG command,
and all flacs in that directory were 'ungained'! It's done, and now I
look forward to listeneing to my surround tracks shuffled in with the
stereo gain-adjusted stuff. I'm prepared to wait a few years for the
SurrGain tag :-)))
Phil, I hadn't looked at the Windows log (never do), but I have now,
and found heaps of errors every day. The most common one is an event
7000 for 'Service Control Manager', but a look at its properties
suggests it's related to my WinFast TV2000 Tuner (which I no longer
use) looking for a lost file. Some similar errors relate to other
services not finding files - the scary thing is some of those
applications (e.g. AVG7) were uninstalled years ago, but are still
doing something on my system!
I suspect these errors are a result of the resizing partitions on my
RAID5 virtual drive (after adding an extra HDD) that I did a week ago,
when Partition Magic crashed in the middle of the process. Scandisk
'repaired' lots of errors, and I was eventually able to complete the
resizing, but it looks like lots of files were lost in the crash.
However the slow start-up of SS after a reboot predates that event by a
long shot. Neverthelss I guess I'm going to have to identify all the
applications/services that are missing files, and reinstall (or
uninstall) them. Surprisingly, so far I haven't noticed any bad
behaviour (I mean no worse than the usual Windoze bad behaviour :-)
since the resizing catastrophe.
Incidentally (smst), how do you create the little box around your code
fragment? [You can see I'm a complete novice to this forum stuff.]

that some other aspects are taken into consideration.

Nonsense, the only relevant aspects are taxes and transport costs.

Having said that, I do believe that the main reaason why companies

Not enough competition. On other networking equipment the price

[slim] Problem with accents with Squeezecenter 7

2008-03-13 Thread didbox

I installed the new Squeezecenter 7 on my Ready NAS NV+.

After a clear and full rescan, it seems that there is a problem with
.mp3 files (and only with .mp3) when you have some accents (like in
french language, you have many accents on letters).

Try this:
- Song with Rêve Bohème in Artist or in Album tags, you have no
artist and no album and no... entries in the index after the
rescan.
- Song with Reve Boheme in Artist or in Album tags, all is OK.

Note that I did not have this problem with Slimserver 6.5.4 and my song
library has not changed since the installation of Squeezecenter 7.

As I have a lot of songs with accents in tags (more than 2000), it is
really a problem and the new Squeezecenter is unusable for me.

Please, can you help?

Thank you!!!

I don't want to remove the accents from the tags. Like in Slimserver

tags.

Also, I think that it must be able to index correctly .mp3 files with

 still stutters mid-song.

next was to set static IPs for player, SC and NAS. still stutters.

finally, try turning off McAffee. still stutters.

conclusions i've reached (maybe wrong, but based on my limited
experience) - it's not a wireless issue since i'm now fully wired.
it's not the firewall. it's not the library itself. what is it!?

this wasn't an issue when my set-up was wireless with 6.5.4 on my old
XP machine. got a new computer and, well, here we are. i'm at a loss.
 thoughts / help is appreciated!

Re: [slim] 2 New Questions on Duet Config

2008-03-13 Thread Skunk

craigf;279046 Wrote:

 1) Is there a way I can set the Duet Controller's wallpaper to an image
of my own, or am I limited to the default options?

There is a partially finished plugin for this.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40399

If you unzip it to your Squeezecenter/server/plugins you'll have a jive
folder where you put the properly sized .png, and an xml file that you
need to edit to get the name to show up. E.g.:
wallpaper
nameTest 1/name
filetest1.png/file
/wallpaper

wallpaper
nameMy Image/name
filefilename.png/file
/wallpaper

 2) We rip our music and sync (copy) it to our Mac for iTunes purposes,
but the master files (by artist/album/) are all on a PC. So, using the
Embed Artwork script to copy the artwork into the album directories
won't work -- each time I sync our master collection to the Mac, it
overwrites anything different on the Mac's external drive, which will
blow away the extra art files. So, is there a way to get the artwork
to show up on the Controller that doesn't involve altering the music
directory's contents? Alternately, is there a way to have the
Controller not display the musical note icon (where the cover art goes
 if it's available)?

This is from the information rollovers in the settings pages at
SettingsAdvancedFormatting. I don't keep all the artwork in a single
folder, so can't help too much, but it may be an option for you.

ARTWORK
Images of album artwork, when available, are displayed when viewing an
album or song information. Artwork images are found in the ID3 tags for
individual songs or can reside in the same folder as song files. By
default, images named cover.jpg, albumartsmall.jpg, folder.jpg,
album.jpg, or thumb.jpg are used. You can specify an additional
file name to use for album art images. You can specify different file
names for thumbnail or full size images. Prefix the option with % and
you can follow it with any string made up of the same elements
available for Title Formats (eq %ARTIST - ALBUM, will look for Artist -
Album.jpg to fit the artist and album information found.

ARTWORK FOLDER
You may choose to store all your artwork in a single folder, using the
variable filenames option above. Enter the location of the Artwork files
here. Regardless of this location, SqueezeCenter will still look for
artwork in the same path as each audio file if no matching artwork is
found in the Artwork Folder.

[slim] SC7 Migration Issues - Older PC

2008-03-13 Thread kblee

I have been enjoying my SB3 for nearly 2 years and have upgraded SS
firmware periodically with no issues. I have an older pc (P4 1.8 Ghz /
512 MB ram) with approx. 500 albums on the hard drive.

I decided to migrate to SC7 last night and am starting to regret the
decision. After the DL and install, the initial scan began. I had
read that this could take awhile, so I went to bed. This morning, the
only change that I could detect is that the scan time was at 8 hours
and still going. CPU usage was maxed at 100%. I use Firefox as my
browser, but navigating was almost impossible.

So - I guess my question is whether it would be better for me to go
back to 6.5 or if there are a couple of tweaks that could make SC7
usable for my obviously antiquated setup.

[slim] Annoyance with stream.mp3

2008-03-13 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

I tend to listen to my music at work using 'stream.mp3' via Winamp. What
I've noticed happening recently is that when I reach the end of a playlist,
Winamp stops playing and disconnects from the stream.

The problem with this is that this removes the stream from the list of
players in the web interface, so I can't add any more music to it. I have to
hit 'Play' on Winamp (which starts it playing the last song in the playlist
again) and then add some more music via the web interface.

Is this a setting somewhere I can change? Or is it an oddity with Winamp?

I guess I could try Softsqueeze, but the last time I tried that on my work
PC it just wouldn't play for some reason, so I gave up and went with the
Winamp approach.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Andy

I always suspected that we wouldnt see the Duet/Controller/Receiver in

Cookies are a way of life on the 'net.
There were many concerns about security issues with cookies in the last
century.

Because of this, most modern implementations do not store any real
values in the cookies, just a nonce that is used to lookup parameters in
a webside/webapplication database. As a result, you don't trust any data
from the cookie, and if someone changes the cookie (its a personal
computer after all) all it does is lose the link to the data.

One can argue as to whether or not using cookies has a potential for
'security accidents' but most of the old concerns are no longer valid.

Preference options in the GUI are always a nice thing to have.

Yes, I'm still using 6.3 because of a change in the 6.5 program that
does not remember the state of the player if it has been turned off
(actual loss of power) for 20-30 minutes or more. My whole house audio
system cuts power to the player when it is cut off, and with 6.3, play
automatically resumes when the system is powered on from any room in
the house. With 6.5, the player has to be restarted from the remote or
web interface. A bug was posted long ago, but the feature was not
incorporated into SC 7.

it's either SC7 or it's the player firmware (ver 86) - based on all the
other variables that i think i've controlled (going wired, static IP
and disabling the firewall) this is what i've isolated.

i'd really rather not revert to 6.5.4 - i LOVE the look and feel of
SC7.

does anyone have ideas on what might be causing this and what else i
could try? i'd read somewhere (and i'm way out of my league here - i
don't even know what this means) that there was a RAM leak in SC7.
could that be it? are there diagnostics i can / should run to help
people smarter than me isolate this problem? has anyone else had a
similar issue?

again - it's brief (10 seconds) dropouts where a song will stutter and
then start right back up where it left off. it's not catastrophic,
just really annoying.

That's not the behaviour I'm seeing. Winamp definitely stops playing. Is
this a setting somewhere?

Don't really want to enable repeat, I want it to 'stop' playing (i.e.
continue to play silence) at the end of the playlist, so I know I need to go
and add something else.

I have bit rate limiting turned on for the stream if that makes any

Yes :-)

Services don't run in an admin mode by default, but under a restricted

The SC7 SqueezeCenter Startup Options application prompts for an

And it warns that if you don't enter such, then it will run in

Neither am I happy with Apple's tedious proprietary games, to say the
least. But I'm a Mac user and it just happens that iTunes is great and
easy music management application also offering high-quality audio
codecs.

But there is no doubt that Logitech has the resources to support some
further development of alac. Some financial incentives would surely
provide alac's author the needed motivation to polish this fine piece
of software ;)

Btw, I converted all my 24bit files to 16bit with the newly purchased
Amadeus Pro, which was the only software capable of 1. processing Apple
Lossless 24/16bit, 2. batch converting replacing them in place in
iTunes' music folder, 3. retaining all meta tags, and 4. doing it fast.

Using Rhapsody, Squeezecenter and the TiVo add-in for WHS on my NAS and

I only hope that someday I'll be able to stream to the duet controller,

My grievance started from the fact that price in the official store in
Germany is over a thousand dollars higher than in the US. It still
escapes me why Logitech think this is a good idea.
Unfortunately I could not find a retailer in Germany that makes a
substantially better price. The Swiss example tells me however, that
there is hope (and no fundamental issues as some here imply).

Re: [slim] Occasional Garbled Static on Apple Lossless

2008-03-13 Thread bigfool1956

You will only get 24 bit ALAC files if your original source was a 24 bit
file.

In other words, if all your files were ripped from CD, then you will
have no 24 bit files.

Note: iTunes cannot convert the bit depth from 16 bit to 24 bit, or
vice versa. You can however feed it 16 or 24 bit files, with 44.1, 48,
96 sample rates and it will happily pack them into ALAC. (It may do
other sample rates and bit depths, these are the ones I have tried)

Re: [slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!

2008-03-13 Thread ds2021

My experience with digital streaming goes back to the Rio/Dell Digital
Audio Receiver. No sync, no internet radio back then. It came with
software versioned 1.03, which never changed in the years that I
struggled with those things.

The Slim Devices hardware is great, certainly, but the I think the
attention to the software is what really sets it apart. Although some
here complain about bugs, dropouts, slowness, etc., I am not sure that
the success stories are so vivid. Also, I am not sure that the
contribution of the user-base to the software development is fully
appreciated either (I'll take the opportunity to applaud the Nokia
skin, iPeng, SuperDateTime, among others that I rely on daily).

I have had my share of issues, but these have been solved. How many
other hardware manufacturers do that so consistently? I have had gps
devices, pocket PCs, phones, computers, even cars, all of which with
issues that absolutely never receive attention from the manufacturer. I
am always surprised when I see complaints about overly frequent updates
to software and firmware here.

So yes, count me in as well. Great products. Ordered my Duet yesterday.
Waiting for the shipping email.

Actually, no. The volume control in the transporter can not
independently control the balanced and single-ended outputs. There is
no way in the transporter to turn off the balanced output separately.
Since the Ref1000 has no gain control, you would have to turn them off
to switch to the headphone amplifier.

2008-03-13 Thread gsgweb

Did some more troubleshooting last night. In comparing the folders/files
created on the W2K install of SC7 there are missing files on the Vista
machine. Tried copying over the missing folders and now I can get MySQL
to start successfully via the CMD line, but SC7 will not connect to it
and I get the following error in the server log. I suspect there are
still missing files or maybe I'm not starting MySQL with all the
correct options as defined in the my.CNF file. I can't figure tha part
out. But clearly the vista install isn't creating all the required
files for SC7 to run on my PC.

I called and emailed tech support last week, but can't get a response

Re: [slim] Occasional Garbled Static on Apple Lossless

Neither am I happy with Apple's tedious proprietary games, to say the

But there is no doubt that Logitech has the resources to support some
further development of alac. Some financial incentives would surely
provide alac's author the needed motivation to polish this fine piece
 of software ;)
they could do all that, and apple could break it all in one itunes
update, and you'd be back to square one.

apple is really the one to appeal to here, to open it up, or better for
everyone (including apple), support flac:

In other words, is it possible to configure Custom Browse so that the
only effect it has is to add Artists by letter to the standard menu?
The notes on your web page (in the Menu Structure section) seem to
suggest that it's possible, but I can't figure it out. Can you help,
 Erland?

There is a Menu position setting in the Custom Browse settings page,
set that to No and the Custom Browse menu will be moved to the
Extras menu instead.

In the Custom Browse settings page, select the Settings
Section=Enabled Menus, then make sure both checkboxes are selected
for your Artists by letter menu. This should place the Artists by
letter menu directly inside the Music Library menu.

To make the changes take effect, you might need to restart both
SqueezeCenter and the SqueezeBox Controller.

Re: [slim] calling all crayons

2008-03-13 Thread maggior

In addition to port 9000, you need to forward port 3483 in your router
settings. Without both of these ports forwarded from your router to
the slimserver, softsqueeze won't work.

With only port 9000 forwarded, you can only play the stream.mp3 stream.

Do you mean on the WebUI or the player display? On the player display
that it pretty much what you get already.

On both the web interface and on the player. I am running 6.5. If 7
does this, I guess I have another reason for upgrading when it is
stable. :-)

Erland, thanks very much for the explanation. It worked a treat. (I did
have to restart SqueezeCenter, but the Controller picked up the new menu
structures simply by switching to a different player). I am now a happy
bunny.

[slim] Wanted: used slimp3

2008-03-13 Thread exile

hey all-

I would love to add a second squeezebox to my home but my needs for the
second sb are much simpler than for my main sb2. I think a slimp3 will
fit the bill perfectly. the question then is: where can I find one?
Does anyone have a need or desire to sell an old slimp3?

thanks!

[slim] Squeezebox Sonos link

2008-03-13 Thread Lesu

Using Google UK today searching for 'squeezebox', the sponsored link
that appeared at the top of the list was for Sonos! I don't know how
much it costs to get that association done, but it's nice to know who
Sonos consider their rival to be.
Maybe Logitech should get a Squeezebox link to appear over the Sonos
search list!
