Re: [slim] Composers listed in Artists. Why?
I'm pretty sure we've seen this bug described before in the forums. It's not that the composer is incorrectly showing up in the artist list, but that albums/tracks attributed to the composer show up under that person along with any albums and tracks on which he's an artist. I'm guessing that this may be the side effect of functionality requested as a stopgap for working with classical music. Or maybe it's just a nasty bug. What I would do, until it's fixed: There's no reason to delete the data, just rename the tag. You can reverse the changes at a later date. Rename all of your COMPOSER fields (actually TCOM in id3v2 tags) to something else, say 'COMPOSER_SAVE'. To do this in Mp3tag what you'd actually do is copy the COMPOSER field to the new one and then remove COMPOSER. Create an 'Action Group' (a named set of Mp3tag actions): 1. Action: Format value - Field: COMPOSER_SAVE - Value: %composer% 2. Action: Remove fields - Field: COMPOSER Test it on a single file first, then check the Extended Tags dialog in Mp3tag to see if it does what's expected. Then test on an album. When you're sure it's doing as expected, unleash it on your whole library. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47791 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Remote streaming to the office step-by-step
Thanks, maggior. I set up password protection per your suggestion, and successfully connected remotely with winamp and softsqueeze, as well as connected to the squeezecenter web interface. After just a day of playing with this, I have to say that whether I connect with softsqueeze or remote stream with winamp is inconsequential, as I have found that controlling the audio through the squeezecenter web interface is so much more intuitive than the squeezebox's own remote/display. In fact I am now controlling my in-house squeezebox via a web interface in the another room, because I think the interface is far superior to the squeezebox and its remote control. I know it has the same functionality, but the visual layout(including album art) is intuitive and the keyboard/mouse interface is much easier and faster for me to navigate. And with remote streaming and the ability to connect to my squeezecenter web interface, it's pretty amazing that I can listen to my music library from any internet enabled computer. apologies if this sounds like a paid testimonial, but I am digging this. The crazy thing is that someone could get all this remote streaming functionality without ever purchasing any squeezebox or transporter hardware! -- youngnold youngnold's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17981 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48517 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] why does SC need to know if an album is a comp?
i have a few questions for the guru's here... we know that COMP tags as well as the VA logic detection both can classify an album (or track) as a compilation to SC7. are we all agreed on that? [...it may also be true that other things do as well, such as folder name and location, or certain strings in tags, (like Various Artists). does anyone know if this is, or is not, the case? (meaning, if you had no COMP tags and had VA logic detection turned off, would SC7 use any other criteria to conclude some album or track was from a comp?)...] in any case... my main question is why does this classification matter? in other words, what is the benefit to SC7 knowing if such and such an album or track is from a compilation or not? yes, i understand that if the VA logic determines something is a comp, it places it, or sorts it, in the VA section of your SC library. but what if you had no comp tags at all, (i don't), and what if you turned off VA logic detection, and instead relied on other tags to sort your music properly? in that scenario, what downside is there to SC not knowing some album or track is from a comp? i am not saying that it isn't important for SC to know. i am just saying that if someone asked me why SC needs to know, i wouldn't be able to answer that question. the only thng i know positive comp classification does, is resort comps into the VA section, but beyond that, i don't know why SC needs to know. and since proper sorting can be achieved more easily and precisely using tagging methods, i don't know why classifying comps is necessary. if anyone can explain the benefits, please do. thx! -- MrSinatra www.LION-Radio.org Using: Squeezebox2 (primary) / SBR (secondary) / SBC - w/SC 7.1beta - Win XP Pro SP3 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - D-Link DIR-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48591 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

A few just off of the top of my head: - So that track-only artists can be suppressed from the artist list when browsing artists. - To determine formatting and presentation in web and other interfaces. A compilation album is most often by Various Artists. Otherwise you're left to choose one (which is wrong) or all of them (we've seen that before, and it's very ugly). - Grouping. Having a pseudo-artist of Various Artists means that users can easily find these albums under that artist. If any/all/none of the above work as you expect in SqueezeCenter then it's an implementation issue, not a conceptual one. You have three choices: 1) All of the 10 artists stuck together - ugly 2) One of the artists (essentially picked at random) - wrong 3) Some special value like Various Artists - requires knowledge that this is a compilation -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48591 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] ReadyNAS cover art resampling
I've been looking at getting squeezecenter 7.x running on my ReadyNAS NV+ to feed a new duet setup. Initial attempts were disappointing due to cover art scaling, so I altered the performance options to resample the artwork as opposed to scaling only. Artwork now looks fine, but it takes an absolute age to resample each file. You've probably already considered this, but in case you haven't: why not replace the artwork with artwork sized to what you want to display on SC, which appears to be 100x100? Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection
Hi, I got rid of my connection problems by changing WPA-PSK (TKIP) security to WEP 128 bit and MAC-filtering. The problem seemed to be reauthentication, during which the connection was lost. I'm using a ZyXEL P-660HW router, and my reauthentication timer was set to 3600 seconds (1 hour). SC is running on a Vista laptop also wirelessly connected. First I got rid of some DHCP errors by switching to static ip on the server. But I still got disconnections, then I tried using a ethernet cable to the server to rule out wireless problems on the serverside, still diconnections at 1 hour intervals now, then I tried reducing the reauthentication timer to 5 min, and wow, now the disconnections came at 5 min intervals!. Unfortunatly my only choices were to increase the timer to max. seconds (2h45m) or to disable WPA security. First I tried without security and it worked without disconnections for 8 hours straight. Afterwards I tried with WEP and still no problems. Hopefully my frustrations are over now and I can start enjoying my music :0) To test whether reauthentication is a problem try to extend or decrease the timer and observe or disable WPA completely for a while. /Letten -- Letten Letten's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] ReadyNAS cover art resampling
Have thought of that but not tested. There are a few different thumbnail formats required for the duet, so some resampling will always be required. If resampling time is directly related to pixel count then resampling to 25x25 (small thumbnail) would take 25x longer with 500x500 than 100x100, so worth a try. Ultimately, it took me a long while to get good quality cover art for my collection. Squeezebox isn't the only front-end - I also use a media center, so don;t want to throw it all away. Would have though that even the processor in the ReadyNas could cope with this - it's not rocket science after all. What perl modules are being used? Re: [slim] 7.0.1 does not scan library at all
I'm on an x86 (hacked) Mac Leopard installation. It was all running fine til a few days ago. Odd—I did a rescan before leaving for a week, then shut it down. Shortly after I added more music, hit rescan and got the same result as everyone else (that ~/Library/Cache/Slimserver/templates issue, as well as the Unix.pm issue). I confirmed the validity of my perl installation: all OK, cleared the cache noted above, etc., still no workee. I even tried moving to the current nightly build, but same prob. It's good to hear that an earlier version of SqueezeCenter (7.0?) works OK and doesn't have this issue. Can someone offer me a URL for that version, as I didn't bother to archive the installer file. Re: [slim] ReadyNAS cover art resampling
I don't know the answer to your perl module questions, but definitely don't throw away your work on the 500x500. You could possibly keep your 500x500 folder.jpg files for your media center, save the resized 100x100 files as cover.jpg (or something else) and tell SC to use those instead of folder.jpg. As for the ReadyNAS coping with it, you're right that it's not rocket science, but the hardware in the ReadyNAS was spec'd for serving files, not running audio servers or manipulating graphics output. Try it on a few files and see if the result is more liveable than what you have now. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48595 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Search for Artists on Controller
I fear I may be digging up a can of worms given all the other discussions about the treatment of ARTIST, ALBUMARTIST and COMPILATION tags, but I haven't found any other threads about this particular issueso I thought I would take the risk of raising it now. As background, I am running 7.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.3. I have 'Group compilation albums together' and 'List albums by band' set. As far as I understand, when browsing by ARTIST only those artists that have a (non-compilation) album in their own name are listed, ie an ARTIST that appears only on, say, one track on a compilation album (ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists) does not show in the browsing list. Compilation Albums are listed together under 'Various Artists'. This much I am happy with as it massively reduces the size of the 'Browse by Artist' list and restricts it to the 'main' artists in my collection. However, when I Search for Artists on the Controller it seems to restrict the search only to this reduced list. I would much prefer 'Search' to search for ALL Artists, ie even those not included in the 'Browse' list. As an example, the other night I was asked 'Do you have any Ian Dury in your collection'. I duly searched for the Artist Ian Dury and the Controller told me I had 'no search results'. However, on further investigation, I do have a couple of tracks by Ian Dury on a couple of compilation albums. Both these tracks have ARTIST=Ian Dury and ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists and COMPILATION=Yes and are listed fine when I managed to find the album and browse through its tracks. Could 'Search' be broadened to search ALL artists, or should I be doing something differently to achieve this? Here is what I've done so far: download and install ActiveState Perl 5.10 download and install tortoise SVN restart windows per tortoise install instructions create a folder at c:\udap_thing checkout the code from http://projects.robinbowes.com/svn/Net-UDAP/trunk/ navigate to c:\udap_thing\scripts and run udap_shell.pl in the shell window, I can execute the help and list commands, but when I try discover I get a huge amount of text. I copied it to notepad and it seems to be this, repeated over and over: Use of uninitialized value $rawstr in length at C:/UDAP_Thing/scripts/../src/Net -UDAP/lib/Net/UDAP/Util.pm line 57. Use of uninitialized value $rawstr in length at C:/UDAP_Thing/scripts/../src/Net -UDAP/lib/Net/UDAP/Util.pm line 67. I assume I'm missing some compile step or something? -- NathanielK NathanielK's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17996 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47358 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Questions re: bridging with SBR
From what it says on Robin's page I think you need Perl 5.8 not 5.1. The errors you're seeing look like they could be caused by that. Give it a go - the download is on the same page as 5.1. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47358 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!
I've written a howto guide for MusicIP integration (based on the recent thread addressing this) and would like to post it to the Wiki. As I authored it in OpenOffice and would like to avoid having to do all the formatting myself, can anyone give me any tips as to how to overcome the following error when trying to install the Sun Wiki Publisher extension: +---+ |Filename: Screenshot-Extension Manager.png | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5251| +---+ -- egd Internet forums: conclusive proof depth of gene pool is indeed variable, monkeys can be taught to cut code, and world peace is utterly unrealistic... egd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3425 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Problems with update to 7.01 for DUET
With jive_7.01_r2448.bin I had no success updating from 7.0 version, even trying different methods: 1) upgrade via controller (standard procedure) 2) upgrade via SqueezeNetwork 3) upgrade via SD-Card (using jive_7.01_r2448.bin) Today I installed 7.0.2-20457. Controller asked for an update which did#t get installed after download (same result as before with r2448) I copied jive_7.0.1_r2502M.bin manually to the SD Card. Renamed it to jive.bin and installed this manually Now the controler installed this completely and re-started. Hey.. this is now working as supposed to !! For all with same issues Use the SD-card update possibility to get the vontroller finally to the latest jive version Still wondering why the upgrade via W-LAN did not worked Thx to all who tried to help ! -- powellmi powellmi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17571 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47787 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
