you've already solved it, but in general, you need to update the
MiP database by way of the HTTP API. I've had inconsistent results with

I don't think that SC is doing it the way it's described above.

You actually do have Dylan tagged as both composer and artist at
various, different tracks in your library. Now, it becomes a judgement
call. There's a person, contributor, at various roles. Do I want to be
able to see anything where he participates, or just tracks where he
partecipates in a certain role? Some people would say yes, some no.
Maybe another candidate for switch in settings. But definitely, not a

Re: [slim] Composers listed in Artists. Why?

2008-06-06 Thread JJZolx

I'm pretty sure we've seen this bug described before in the forums.

It's not that the composer is incorrectly showing up in the artist
list, but that albums/tracks attributed to the composer show up under
that person along with any albums and tracks on which he's an artist.
I'm guessing that this may be the side effect of functionality
requested as a stopgap for working with classical music. Or maybe it's
just a nasty bug.

What I would do, until it's fixed: There's no reason to delete the
data, just rename the tag. You can reverse the changes at a later
date. Rename all of your COMPOSER fields (actually TCOM in id3v2 tags)
to something else, say 'COMPOSER_SAVE'. To do this in Mp3tag what you'd
actually do is copy the COMPOSER field to the new one and then remove
COMPOSER.

Create an 'Action Group' (a named set of Mp3tag actions):

1. Action: Format value
- Field: COMPOSER_SAVE
- Value: %composer%

2. Action: Remove fields
- Field: COMPOSER

Test it on a single file first, then check the Extended Tags dialog in
Mp3tag to see if it does what's expected. Then test on an album. When
you're sure it's doing as expected, unleash it on your whole library.

Re: [slim] Remote streaming to the office step-by-step

2008-06-06 Thread youngnold

Thanks, maggior.
I set up password protection per your suggestion, and successfully
connected remotely with winamp and softsqueeze, as well as connected to
the squeezecenter web interface.
After just a day of playing with this, I have to say that whether I
connect with softsqueeze or remote stream with winamp is
inconsequential, as I have found that controlling the audio through the
squeezecenter web interface is so much more intuitive than the
squeezebox's own remote/display. In fact I am now controlling my
in-house squeezebox via a web interface in the another room, because I
think the interface is far superior to the squeezebox and its remote
control. I know it has the same functionality, but the visual
layout(including album art) is intuitive and the keyboard/mouse
interface is much easier and faster for me to navigate.
And with remote streaming and the ability to connect to my
squeezecenter web interface, it's pretty amazing that I can listen to
my music library from any internet enabled computer. apologies if this
sounds like a paid testimonial, but I am digging this.
The crazy thing is that someone could get all this remote streaming
functionality without ever purchasing any squeezebox or transporter
hardware!

tag and my files don't have user defined tags.

they do have TPE2 tags, aka band tags. a lot of software hijacks TPE2
to use AS the album artist tag, but they do so erroneously, and
currently, SC7 gives no option to respect this defacto (if albeit
erroneous) standard.

in any case, without being able to turn off the VA detection logic, and
without getting SC7 to populate ALBUMARTIST with TPE2 tags, i can't
really test what happens when the value is Various Artists

i guess i have to wait, b/c i just don't have the time to get into this

the main reason i can't get people i know into SC7 and slim, is b/c of
the limitations it has in handling average users, especially those
users without user defined tags.

a lot of users get their mp3s from multiple apps, meaning multiple
rippers, p2p, friends, etc... there is no SOP for tags, but my
suggestions re: these bugs at least allow average users the chance to
get sensible management of their files with the least amount of
tinkering, and using apps they already use.

i can't stress enough how important i think that is. if slim wants
people to buy into their way of doing things, imo, they need to meet
the average user more than halfway.

 Artists album.

but i don't think it sorts via TPE2. i could be wrong, but i think it
sorts via TPE1, (i am fairly sure of this), and when there is a TPE1
mismatch, that then gets it classified as a comp and VA album, but TPE2
has nothing to do with any of that at any point.

remember, TPE2 populates the internal to SC7 field of BAND, not
ALBUMARTIST.

thats what 8001 is meant to address. b/c SC7 uses ALBUMARTIST to sort.

[slim] why does SC need to know if an album is a comp?

2008-06-06 Thread MrSinatra

i have a few questions for the guru's here...

we know that COMP tags as well as the VA logic detection both can
classify an album (or track) as a compilation to SC7. are we all
agreed on that?

[...it may also be true that other things do as well, such as folder
name and location, or certain strings in tags, (like Various
Artists). does anyone know if this is, or is not, the case?
(meaning, if you had no COMP tags and had VA logic detection turned
off, would SC7 use any other criteria to conclude some album or track
was from a comp?)...]

in any case...

my main question is why does this classification matter?

in other words, what is the benefit to SC7 knowing if such and such
an album or track is from a compilation or not?

yes, i understand that if the VA logic determines something is a comp,
it places it, or sorts it, in the VA section of your SC library.

but what if you had no comp tags at all, (i don't), and what if you
turned off VA logic detection, and instead relied on other tags to sort
your music properly? in that scenario, what downside is there to SC not
knowing some album or track is from a comp?

i am not saying that it isn't important for SC to know. i am just
saying that if someone asked me why SC needs to know, i wouldn't be
able to answer that question.

the only thng i know positive comp classification does, is resort comps
into the VA section, but beyond that, i don't know why SC needs to
know.

and since proper sorting can be achieved more easily and precisely
using tagging methods, i don't know why classifying comps is
necessary.

if anyone can explain the benefits, please do. thx!

Re: [slim] why does SC need to know if an album is a comp?

2008-06-06 Thread JJZolx

A few just off of the top of my head:

- So that track-only artists can be suppressed from the artist list
  when browsing artists.

- To determine formatting and presentation in web and other
interfaces. A compilation album is most often by Various Artists.
Otherwise you're left to choose one (which is wrong) or all of them
(we've seen that before, and it's very ugly).

- Grouping. Having a pseudo-artist of Various Artists means that
users can easily find these albums under that artist.

If any/all/none of the above work as you expect in SqueezeCenter then
it's an implementation issue, not a conceptual one. Go to a music
store and you'll undoubtedly see (probably by genre) a bin with
compilation albums that can't be grouped under a particular artist.

right... but then again, proper tagging could accomplish that. i mean
if its a question of sorting, tagging seems better equipped to handle
that issue then identifying something as a comp or not, (which can be
hit or miss).

If any/all/none of the above work as you expect in SqueezeCenter then
it's an implementation issue, not a conceptual one. Go to a music

compilation albums that can't be grouped under a particular artist.

i absolutely agree that some albums need to be grouped together.

i would have a Various Artists section for sure. but i might also have
a Soundtracks section, and i might want that separate from the VA
section, (like say, under soundtracks) and so on...

Re: [slim] why does SC need to know if an album is a comp?

Jim, can you expound on this? it alone absolutely seems like reason
enough. i did not know the comp classification did this. however,
what if you did NOT want such suppression?

This is the first compilation option under Music Library options.
Either group these albums together (under the VA artist) or list them
under each artist. What it means is whether or not every single artist
should be in the artist browse list. Say you have a compilation album
with 20 different artists. The software at some point must recognize
that the album on which all these artist appears is a compilation album
- otherwise it's an album by 20 different artists, and each one will be
in the artist listing no matter what.

Again, there have been many, and still probably are some bugs with how
this option works.

i'm afraid i don't quite follow you here... what do you mean choose
one or all of them. what exactly is the problem you are running
into here, if a VA album is not classified as a comp, with the web
 interface?

Say I have a compilation album that is by 20 different artists. When
it's listed in the web interface, like every other album displayed it's
going say that the album is by _someone_. Like Revolver by The
Beatles, I'm going to have Verve Jazz Masters by _someone_. If you
don't recognize the album as a compilation then it's either by (pick
someone) or else it's by Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, Sarah
Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, etc. etc.

It's not as mysterious as you seem to think. ActiveState perl comes
with an installer for Windows -- it's no more difficult than installing
any other Windows program. It is free.

After you install it, you need to run SC by invoking slimserver.pl (or
squeezecenter.pl, I'm not sure which it is at present) through the perl
interpreter via the command prompt. This is also very simple, and
described in http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/StartingWindowsDev

You don't need to know programming. kdf and Erland have already figured
out what needs to be done. There are easy ways for you to apply the
patch Erland wrote. I don't remember how to do that, so I would just
use the brute force method and open the relevant files in a text editor
(notepad, wordpad, etc.) and make the changes shown in the 'diff' view
of Erland's post to the bug report (see
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/attachment.cgi?id=3402action=diff). Then
save the files with changes and try it out. It might look like
programming, but at this stage it's really just typing. Very careful
typing. Actually, you can make most of the edits via copypaste.

Let's say you have an album with 10 tracks, each with a different
artist tag but the same album tag (obviously). Now, in a list of albums
formatted as Album by Artist you have to figure out what to put in the
Artist bit for this album. You have three choices:

1) All of the 10 artists stuck together - ugly
2) One of the artists (essentially picked at random) - wrong
3) Some special value like Various Artists - requires knowledge that
this is a compilation

[slim] ReadyNAS cover art resampling

I've been looking at getting squeezecenter 7.x running on my ReadyNAS

Initial attempts were disappointing due to cover art scaling, so I
altered the performance options to resample the artwork as opposed to

Artwork now looks fine, but it takes an absolute age to resample each

You've probably already considered this, but in case you haven't: why
not replace the artwork with artwork sized to what you want to display
on SC, which appears to be 100x100? You should be able to crank through
the re-sizing in batch or semi-batch mode using one of several different
graphics packages.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-06-06 Thread Letten

Hi,

I got rid of my connection problems by changing WPA-PSK (TKIP) security
to WEP 128 bit and MAC-filtering. The problem seemed to be
reauthentication, during which the connection was lost.

I'm using a ZyXEL P-660HW router, and my reauthentication timer was set
to 3600 seconds (1 hour). SC is running on a Vista laptop also
wirelessly connected. First I got rid of some DHCP errors by switching
to static ip on the server. But I still got disconnections, then I
tried using a ethernet cable to the server to rule out wireless
problems on the serverside, still diconnections at 1 hour intervals
now, then I tried reducing the reauthentication timer to 5 min, and
wow, now the disconnections came at 5 min intervals!.

Unfortunatly my only choices were to increase the timer to max.
seconds (2h45m) or to disable WPA security. First I tried without
security and it worked without disconnections for 8 hours straight.
Afterwards I tried with WEP and still no problems.

Hopefully my frustrations are over now and I can start enjoying my
music :0)

To test whether reauthentication is a problem try to extend or decrease
the timer and observe or disable WPA completely for a while.

/Letten

[slim] Transporter Lost output signals HELP!

2008-06-06 Thread NoFlyZone

I've been cruzing along with my Transporter listening to my library and
sounding so good. Been very happy except for a few hiccups regarding
digital outputs - that's another thread later on.

This morning I was listening to internet radio. While in the middle of
a song there was a click then no sound. The meters continue to move but
no output. I tried my music library but still no output. I rebooted but
still no output. I went from balanced to single ended, still no output.
Unplugged unit, replugged - no help. I need help. This looks bad.

Re: [slim] ReadyNAS cover art resampling

2008-06-06 Thread cwinson

Have thought of that but not tested. There are a few different thumbnail
formats required for the duet, so some resampling will always be
required. If resampling time is directly related to pixel count then
resampling to 25x25 (small thumbnail) would take 25x longer with
500x500 than 100x100, so worth a try.

Ultimately, it took me a long while to get good quality cover art for
my collection. Squeezebox isn't the only front-end - I also use a media
center, so don;t want to throw it all away.

Would have though that even the processor in the ReadyNas could cope
with this - it's not rocket science after all.

What perl modules are being used? Can they be replaced?

Re: [slim] 7.0.1 does not scan library at all

2008-06-06 Thread rfrost

I'm on an x86 (hacked) Mac Leopard installation. It was all running fine
til a few days ago. Odd—I did a rescan before leaving for a week, then
shut it down. Shortly after I added more music, hit rescan and got
the same result as everyone else (that
~/Library/Cache/Slimserver/templates issue, as well as the Unix.pm
issue). I confirmed the validity of my perl installation: all OK,
cleared the cache noted above, etc., still no workee. I even tried
moving to the current nightly build, but same prob.

It's good to hear that an earlier version of SqueezeCenter (7.0?) works
OK and doesn't have this issue. Can someone offer me a URL for that
version, as I didn't bother to archive the installer file.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] ReadyNAS cover art resampling

2008-06-06 Thread aubuti

I don't know the answer to your perl module questions, but definitely
don't throw away your work on the 500x500. You could possibly keep your
500x500 folder.jpg files for your media center, save the resized 100x100
files as cover.jpg (or something else) and tell SC to use those instead
of folder.jpg. As for the ReadyNAS coping with it, you're right that
it's not rocket science, but the hardware in the ReadyNAS was spec'd
for serving files, not running audio servers or manipulating graphics
output.

Try it on a few files and see if the result is more liveable than what
you have now.

Resizing is done using libgd so I don't know how much faster it can get.
Part of the problem is the lack of floating point on the ReadyNAS CPU.

Scanner.exe reported as Trojan Horse: Generic 10.AINU

i also ran Kaspersky online virus checker. it reported scanner.exe as a

that the file was locked... which, thinking about it, could have been
because AVG's virus vault was messing with it

AVG Free has been giving me nags for a week or so telling me that the

Re: [slim] 7.0.1 does not scan library at all

2008-06-06 Thread relen

Looks like you can find 7.0.0 here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SqueezeCenter_v7.0.0/

I'm a little surprised we haven't heard more on this issue. It's not
trivial, it's fatal - it means you cannot run the current release
version or anything thereafter, on an entire platform.

Usually the community here is really fast and helpful especially on big
issues. But this time hardly a peep... Is it difficult to replicate? Is
there anything additional in the way of info that we can provide to
help?

[slim] Search for Artists on Controller

2008-06-06 Thread WhaleOil

I fear I may be digging up a can of worms given all the other
discussions about the treatment of ARTIST, ALBUMARTIST and COMPILATION
tags, but I haven't found any other threads about this particular
issueso I thought I would take the risk of raising it now.

As background, I am running 7.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.3. I have 'Group
compilation albums together' and 'List albums by band' set.

As far as I understand, when browsing by ARTIST only those artists that
have a (non-compilation) album in their own name are listed, ie an
ARTIST that appears only on, say, one track on a compilation album
(ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists) does not show in the browsing list.
Compilation Albums are listed together under 'Various Artists'.

This much I am happy with as it massively reduces the size of the
'Browse by Artist' list and restricts it to the 'main' artists in my
collection.

However, when I Search for Artists on the Controller it seems to
restrict the search only to this reduced list. I would much prefer
'Search' to search for ALL Artists, ie even those not included in the
'Browse' list.

As an example, the other night I was asked 'Do you have any Ian Dury in
your collection'. I duly searched for the Artist Ian Dury and the
Controller told me I had 'no search results'. However, on further
investigation, I do have a couple of tracks by Ian Dury on a couple of
compilation albums. Both these tracks have ARTIST=Ian Dury and
ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists and COMPILATION=Yes and are listed fine
when I managed to find the album and browse through its tracks.

Could 'Search' be broadened to search ALL artists, or should I be doing
something differently to achieve this?

Many thanks

WhaleOil

Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?

SC off of it, (and i'm not mac savvy yet anyway).

As already mentioned, it's free and it has an installer, so it's really
not that complicated. When you have installed ActiveState perl and got
it to run the slimserver.pl in your unpatched copy, I'll provide you
with some files updated with the patch which you just can unzip in your
SqueezeCenter installation.

The other alternative is just to wait until someone at Logitech has the
time to verify it.

I completely agree with you regarding this, I'm just not sure that the
VA logic is an important part for average users. I do understand that
it is an important part in libraries that looks like your, but I
suspect your library has a lot more artists tagged on your albums than
the library of an average user.

Re: [slim] Trojoan in scanner.exe?!

2008-06-06 Thread Anoop M .

This issue has been coming up a lot today and the best solution so far
that I have found is to:

1. Uninstall SqueezeCenter
2. Uninstall AVG
3. Re install SqueezeCenter
4. Re install AVG.

This has worked for a handful of customers today.

[slim] Questions re: bridging with SBR

2008-06-06 Thread NathanielK

I'm trying to set up my new SBC to bridge to my Pioneer Blu-ray player.
I have been reading this thread and Robin's wiki page and I'm wondering
if there are unspoken steps or gotchas that I am missing. Here is what
I've done so far:

download and install ActiveState Perl 5.10

download and install tortoise SVN

restart windows per tortoise install instructions

create a folder at c:\udap_thing

checkout the code from
http://projects.robinbowes.com/svn/Net-UDAP/trunk/

navigate to c:\udap_thing\scripts and run udap_shell.pl

in the shell window, I can execute the help and list commands, but when
I try discover I get a huge amount of text. I copied it to notepad and
it seems to be this, repeated over and over:

Use of uninitialized value $rawstr in length at
C:/UDAP_Thing/scripts/../src/Net
-UDAP/lib/Net/UDAP/Util.pm line 57.
Use of uninitialized value $rawstr in length at

Use of uninitialized value $mac in concatenation (.) or string at
C:/UDAP_Thing/
scripts/../src/Net-UDAP/lib/Net/UDAP.pm line 297.

I tried with the red light blinking on the SBR, and I also tried
setting up the SBR from the SBC and then plugging the SBR into my
router directly. I assume I'm missing some compile step or something?

[slim] Questions re: bridging with SBR

2008-06-06 Thread radish

From what it says on Robin's page I think you need Perl 5.8 not 5.1. The
errors you're seeing look like they could be caused by that. Give it a
go - the download is on the same page as 5.1.

Re: [slim] Problems with update to 7.01 for DUET

2008-06-06 Thread powellmi

With jive_7.01_r2448.bin I had no success updating from 7.0 version,
even trying different methods:
1) upgrade via controller (standard procedure)
2) upgrade via SqueezeNetwork
3) upgrade via SD-Card (using jive_7.01_r2448.bin)

Today I installed 7.0.2-20457. Controller asked for an update which
did#t get installed after download (same result as before with r2448)
I copied jive_7.0.1_r2502M.bin manually to the SD Card. Renamed it to
jive.bin and installed this manually
Now the controler installed this completely and re-started.

Hey.. this is now working as supposed to !! For all with same issues
Use the SD-card update possibility to get the vontroller finally to the
latest jive version

Still wondering why the upgrade via W-LAN did not worked

Thx to all who tried to help !
