Remove Library/Cache/SqueezeCenter before installing 7.0.1. I might have mixed
two related threads. In the meantime someone mentioned in the other thread,
that it didn't help :-(.

I've now opened a bug against this issue. Please provide any information you
can (OS version, music path, installation mode single user/all users, start at
boot/logon etc.) to this bug report:

Try the Rhapsody feature of your local SqueezeCenter

If it still does not work:
- stop the server
- open a cmd window in C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server
- restart the server with

.\squeezecenter.exe --debug
plugin.rhapsodydirect=debug,player.source=debug,player.streaming.direct=debug

- check the log file in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application

Re: [slim] Artwork resizing - could it be managed better?

2008-06-09 Thread cwinson

Thanks for the responses Michael.

To answer the question around what I mean by 'more could/should be done
during the initial scan', I would propose the following:

1) Provide a set of options which configures the resampling and caching
of the various artwork sizes during the initial scan. Knowing my RadyNAS
struggles with the resizing, I would pre-scan the 56x56, 154x154,
186x186 and 240x240 images which are used by the controller - plus
possbily the web ones as well so I can access the settings page within
a reasonable timescale. The initial scan would take a long time, but
this could be scheduled overnight

2) Resize and cache the standard icons (e.g. no album cover, favourites
etc.) during the initial scan. At the moment, I'm not sure if they're
even cached on first use.

3) Run the logic to determine artwork location for each track (embedded
tag vs. folder.jpg etc.) during the initial scan. This would also fix
the issue reported by EliteAV in the following thread where this
per-track check causes delays in browsing albums.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45121

Add to this the ability to share cached artwork across tracks so the
resizing doesnt have to occur multiple times (as per the bug you
mention) and I think the overall responsiveness of the controller would
be far better. For me, it would make the readynas solution workable
without having to use the degraded artwork option.

Re: [slim] 7.0.1 does not scan library at all

2008-06-09 Thread Heuer

Happened to me as well. Tried deleting everything and doing a new
install to no avail. What did work for me was doing a fresh install
onto my D:\ drive rather than the C:\ drive previously used. Complete
scan worked perfectly and re-scans are also OK. Not sure if there is a
clue in there as to where the problem lies but may be food for thought.
This is a Dell Dimension 8250 XP running only SC and Weather Display

In order to request this URL from a Bookmark/Favorite, or some means

Nathaniel,

From what I can gather, bridging is supported with out using Net-UDAP.

You simply:

1. set up SBR wirelessly
2. plug device to be networked into SNR RJ45 port

However, it seems that if SBR detects a wired network connection when it
starts it will attempt to connect using it.

Note: I've not tested any of this, it's just what I have gleaned from
reading others' experiences on the forums.

If you are referring to pressing play on the Controller, MiP/SC
integration for the Controller requires SC 7.1

create an antenna to pick up all the RFI and EMI in your home and take
it right to your source device?
Also remember all this stuff is outside and without the
possibility of burning down ones house if something goes wrong in the
 walls!

Maybe listing your goal for this project would be a be help? What is
the end result you are trying to accomplish?

Thank you for your reply iPhone,
when the house was being built I ran lots of wires for a complete Linn
system. I didn't know anything about computers as a source nor
Squeezeboxes. Installing a server/squeeze system will save a lot of
and probably give better sound. Most rooms I can get to from
either the basement or the attic but I've got a couple of rooms where
the roof/ceiling comes down low on the walls and there is no access to
run more wires. I need to install the SB3 on the wall with no visible
wiring, so wall warts are a no no.

I appreciate your concern for fire issues. I had planned on installing
2 amp in-line fuses both in the basement and at the SB3. The RFI issue
I hadn't thought about and don't know how much weight to attach to it.
Your advice here is appreciated. Is there a way to block the rfi?

I realize that coax is not the correct solution. Perhaps a better or
safer solution would be to take a single run from the power supply to
the attic and then inject it into the 4 unused wires in the CAT5 to
feed each SB. I could intercept the CAT5 just before it disappears
into the roof-ceiling union.

Oh, I have the regulated power supply and no other use for it. It's an
Acopian A series so it is far better than the wall wart.

it's been a long standing feature in the Squeezebox product line. That

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-09 Thread thing-fish

Can anybody please advise what the MusicIP validation process actually
 does ?

Essentially no, because ' it's patented'
(http://patft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2Sect2=HITOFFp=1u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.htmlr=1f=Gl=50co1=ANDd=PTXTs1=7,013,301.PN.OS=PN/7,013,301RS=PN/7,013,301)
(though that does seem to be more about the fingerprinting than the
analysis). With that said, I've certainly found that with all the
settings at their defaults, if I seed a mix with saxophone-led bebop
jazz, I'm going to get a fair amount of saxophone and a fair amount of
jazz. If I seed using something with a lot of vocal harmonies, much of
the mix will have vocal harmonies. Upbeat seeds generally result in
upbeat mixes. I don't know how it does any of this, but it generally
does it very well. The mixes it comes up with often remind me of my
very favorite FM DJs from my youth, the independent stations where
coming up with a flow was an art form.

technojunkie;309692 Wrote:
I ask because, having tried to finely tune the mix paramaters within SC
and the MusicMagicServer I'm still getting some very odd mixes.

Does the validation process flag tracks by genre, style of music,
feel/mood of music or some other method ?

The songs in my library have not been all correctly tagged for genre
but I was expecting the MusicIP validation process to log this
 information.

It definitely seems to be music content-related. Though I have noticed
that if I pick a live recording that's got a lot of crowd noise, the mix
will include other recordings with crowd noise. Usage of the genre tag,
which is not analysis related, is a flag you can set (which restricts
the mix to the genre of the seed).

technojunkie;309692 Wrote:
However if, for example, I select a rock ballad as the seed song, I get
a lot of songs in the mix that are not by rock artists and certainly
not rock ballads or anything similar in style or mood.

Am I expecting too much from MusicIp or do I need to do some more fine
tuning of the mix settings and, if so, which ones ?

It sounds like you want a pretty restrictive mix, so perhaps you should
set the Genre flag to Yes to restrict the genre (then you should only get
Rock in the above example). In addition, increase the number for Style.
The default is 0, which means to ignore the seed style. (Note that
style is undefined). For Variety, what I've found is that with a
variety of 0, you can create a mix from a seed and get 10 tracks, then
immediately create a mix from that same seed and you'll get the exact
same tracks again. But if you have Variety set to a higher number, it
will vary the mix a little each time you seed with the same track.

My default settings are Variety of 2 and style of 20, no genre
restriction. With those settings, if I pick a track by Suzanne Vega
that's just her and her guitar, I will get a mix that is largely (but not
entirely) acoustic-based and will almost exclusively feature female
vocals.

I hope some of this helps! I love MusicIP mixer. I've said it before: I
wouldn't have bought a Squeezebox if it weren't for that program. My
whole family interacts with our music collection almost *exclusively*
through MusicIP mixes.

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-09 Thread seanadams

You can't power a device like SB3, which requires a regulated input,
because there will be a significant voltage drop on the cable. If you
have CAT5 for ethernet, consider using POE. Something like this will
work: http://www.voipsupply.com/product_info.php?products_id=1330

For the 24V devices... it might work, but do you really not have an AC
plug anywhere nearby?

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-09 Thread iPhone

gsawdy;310119 Wrote:
Thank you for your reply iPhone,
when the house was being built I ran lots of wires for a complete Linn
system. At that time I didn't know anything about computers as a
source nor Squeezeboxes. Installing a server/squeeze system will save
a lot of , is more versitile, and probably give better sound. Most
rooms I can get to from either the basement or the attic but I've got a
couple of rooms where the roof/ceiling comes down low on the walls and
there is no access to run more wires. I need to install the SB3 on the
wall with no visible wiring, so wall warts are a no no.

In Edit: The cable is labelled Coleman 32041 RG6/U Quad Shield 18AGW
(It's a funny looking 8, but I think it's an eight.) And the CAT5 is
shielded. Should the CAT shield be connected anywhere? or just float?

Well it looks like this was a study in time management. The Coax cable
can't power more then one Squeezebox. Its maximum current rating is 2.3
amps and just one SB3 is close to maxxing that out. The circuit would
have to be a parallel circuit so that the voltage would stay constant
at 5VDC and the current would vary with the load. Once the second SB3
was turned on, the current demand would exceed the rating of the Coax.
Do not even think about using CAT5 to power even one SB3 (most CAT5 is
rated at less the half an Amp). As to your shielding question on the
CAT5, it depends on if it is really shielded or not. Fully shielded
CAT5 has a metal encased RJ45 plug on each end so the whole cable is
grounded to the chassis it is connected to. If the CAT5 does not have
these encased RJ45s, it could have a full-length shield cover but it
would not be grounded so it would not reject EMI.

One last note, a two-amp fuse in the basement will not work because the
current will increase with each SB3 added to the circuit. As an example,
if you had wiring able to carry the load for three SB3s in parallel, the
fuse at the supply would be a 10-amp fuse and each SB3 would have an
inline 2-amp fuse.

Possible solution (involving more work) would be to make separate drops
with 16AWG two-conductor wire assuming 50-foot runs. Use an inline fuse
in each run at the power supply end and connect all the fused leads to
the PS positive terminal and the set the output voltage for about
5.5VDC. At 2 amps for each unit with 50 feet of 16AWG you should end up
with about a half-volt line drop. Smaller cheaper wire could be used,
but the longer the run the larger the voltage drop. Of course all this
is using the theoretical numbers, your mileage WILL vary. Most times it
is all right to use the next smaller gauge (larger number)if current
handling ability and voltage drop are acceptable.

[slim] SC7.0.1 scanning issue (various artists multiple albums)

2008-06-09 Thread BBear

I've spent at least one full day now trying to sort out issues I was
having with my QNAP (upgrading to SC7). I'd encountered some scanning
issues with multiple disc albums not being merged (so far all other
versions have worked fine on this front).

I'd also upgraded my windows installation and found that when I redid
the scan (clear and rescan) to my surprise the same issue occurred.

Please not this was only for multiple albums in the various artists
folder. Albums in individual artist folders were handled correctly.

After downgrading to 7.0 again I have now successfully completed scans
on both windows and qnap :)

I've also now upgraded to 7.0.1 again with the 7.0 scan in place on
both the qnap and xp machines and the album count is correct on both.

I don't have log files for this error but believe it should be
straightforward to recreate for anyone that wants to (install 7.0.1 and
clear and rescan everything).

I hope this helps others out there that are experiencing a similar
issue.

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-09 Thread iPhone

I keep going back to the fact that you are planning to hang this on the
wall. That is fine, and you are talking about getting power to the
unit. What you are not talking about is all the other required items.

One can not just power an SB3 and hang it on the wall. It has to be
wired to Ethernet or talk wirelessly to a network. Next it has to be
connected to a HT Receiver/IAmp/Amp or Powered Speakers. The SB3 is not
a Sonos and does not have a server or built in amp. So there are going
to be other wires or other devices that need power at the SB3 install
location.

How are these issues being handled? What are you going to be playing
the music over (speakers or powered speakers)?

My neighbor has two things that might apply. In his basement he has cut
a hole in his wall and mounted a plasic cut-in box to set an SB3 into.
On the other side of the wall is a utility closet that has his server,
wireless router, a Denon Receiver, and the wires coming from the four
(2 Thiel PowerPlane 2.1 in-wall and 2 HighPlane 1.2 ceiling) Speakers.
This is a very neat install. Only power and stereo RCAs come into the
back of the cut-in box. Upstairs he has a very large Atomic Wall clock
what only uses a wall wart (no battery option). He put a power strip in
his attic, drilled a hole to drop the DC lead off the wall wart down the
inside of the wall to a hole through the wall powering the clock.
Something like this might work.

In my home, I installed a chandilier lift. The power was already there
for the light, but I needed a power source to run the lift. It voids
the warranty if I borrow the power from the light circuit. So I found a
15 amp circuit for wall outlets and extended the circuit with Romex and
installed a metal junction box to code with an outlet.

If there is room above the ceiling where you want to install the SB3 on
the wall, you might be able to do the same thing. Extend the AC with an
outlet, plug the wall wart into the new outlet and drop the DC pigtail
of the wall wart down inside the wall.

[slim] Duet Receiver Break Up with 85% signal !

2008-06-09 Thread tonythetiger

Hi All,
How comes my Duet Receiver breaks up even with signal strength at
80-85% ?
It happens on both my SB3 and Duet Receiver. I've tried changing wifi
channels, switching off wifi encryption, moving router, twiddling
router aerial, disabling anti-virus etc etcie many hours wasted.

What I dont understand is why I'm having these problems now? My old SB3
used to work 100% except when microwave was on - now my new setup barely
works.

Seems as though the culprit could be squeezecenter. It seems like if
you skip around tracks and albums the software just kind of stops
talking, gets the hump and works again either a few seconds later, or
maybe never.

I dont see how it could be wireless router as it used to be fine
(netgear 834G with latest firmware). I also have latest controller
firmware and latest squeezecenter.

The only thing that seems to fix it is running Duet CABLED - but then
if I wanted to run 5e all over the house I wouldn't have gone for a
Duet would I, and I wouldn't have upgraded.

Dont particularly want to change router when it's been fine for 2
years, or cable my house. Any ideas?

TIA
TTT

[slim] Wireless failure after 7.0.1 upgrade

2008-06-09 Thread chezadw

Hi all, I've been running a wireless squeezebox version3 for a couple
of years and it's always been fine. I've kept it current with each
release of the software (once I've spotted it's been released!!!)

A week ago I downloaded 7.0.1, installed the server, ran the firmware
upgrade and immediately problems started. I couldn't get a stable
wireless connection at all. When I run it over the wireless I can go
through the usual process to connect to the network. The DHCP server
gives the box and IP address, it finds the squeezeserver, and I can
even begin to play a track. After a few seconds or minutes the track
restarts, or freezes. Intermittently the box reports that it can't
find a squeezeserver.

This weekend I've run it wired using the ethernet connector, which
works fine.

To prove that it's not the server I've run the pc both wired on
ethernet and wireless. The result is the same. So I'm convinced it's
the box's wireless capability now.

To recap, I believe the latest version of the firmare (that downloads
with 7.0.1) isn't working. (BTW I've done the firmware upload via
ethernet to ensure it ran to completion)

Anyone experience the same? If not, do you know how can I revert the
box to an earlier firmware version? It might be as simple as
reinstalling an earlier server, but I don't want to risk it without
some confirmation,

thanks for the help. I hope I can get this sorted. I've been thinking
about getting a couple more for around the house but until I can sort
this, that idea's been put on the back burner.

Cheers

Al

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-09 Thread Patrick Dixon

OK, if I press and hold Play on a track selected through Browse -
Artist, it creates a MusicIP playlist ... but it doesn't make it the
active playlist. I then have to press + to add it to the end of the
current playlist (or press and hold + to add it next). However there
doesn't seem to be any way to replace the current playlist with the
MusicIP generated one. If I just press play on the first song in the
MusicIP playlist it plays the album that the song is taken from,
followed by the rest of the MusicIP playlist. I guess this is because
I have 'Play other songs in album or directory set'?

This is using the IR remote only.

Is this behaviour what other people see?

You don't need any drivers for SqueezeCenter and it can be installed

Yes, I saw that this morning:-) It is odd that this logic wasnt

affects people who access their music libraries across a network rather
than on local drives (which based on the feedback in this thread, I am

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-09 Thread lanierb

Why not just have an electrician install a recessed horizontal AC outlet
and mount the SB3 over top of it on the wall much like people do with
plasma TVs? The outlet is still smaller than the SB3 footprint and the
SB3 would be flush to the wall hiding the outlet. I bet it could be
done fairly easily as long as there is AC somewhere in the vicinity.

(The obvious alternative going through everyone's mind is to just place
the SB3 on a table somewhere near an existing outlet but I assume you
have good reasons for having ruled that out.)

2008-06-09 Thread sander

Philip Meyer;309981 Wrote:
I could understand the effect you are seeing if you are trying to browse
albums ordered by year, because what year would an album be sorted
 under?

When I browse to an album that has different years in the tracks, it
shows up as multiple albums regardless of whether I'm browsing through
the Squeezebox or Moose.

An example is the Cinema of Serge Gainsbourg, some loving soul tagged
each song with the year it was released. So the first 3 tracks have the
year listed as 1959, the next two are from 1960, and so on.

In Moose this shows up under the artist but as multiple albums with the
same name so there are a dozen Cinema of Serge Gainsbourg albums each
clumped by year.

I tried to find the conversation which I was having in the tagging
forums, but the archive is very small there. People there told me this
was expected behavior as SqueezeCenter interprets the year tag as Album
year, not Song year.

If this is a problem in my tagging or there is someway to get around
this, like it sounds you have, I'd like to follow up in another thread.
If you could help.

... and curiously enough, nor do I today! Last night I quit the MIP
GUI and put the PC into hibernation. I woke it up again today, but
didn't restart the GUI. Sitting downstairs, I offered the wife a demo
of MIP in action, then realised as I made the mix that it might not
play... but I tried it anyway - and it worked fine. As have others
since.

No idea why it didn't work at first yesterday, but works today. Like I
said, it's all about the chicken voodoo - certainly no mere mortal
intervention at work here!

What do you stand to lose by blanking it and doing a clear and rescan?

An hour or two of my (listening) life! :-) It was precisely that kind
of, Well, let's just try... that kept putting me off MIP at first
(and second, and third, ...) IIRC, last time I blanked Music Folder I
lost all the artwork, and MIP *still* didn't work (mixes on playlists
only).

What's changed since it last worked for you - new music, box rebooted
 etc?

Not rebooted, but was hibernated. Might've added music and did a
new/changed scan, but am not sure if this was before or after I closed
the GUI. I only know that umpteen attempts to play mixes failed, until
I (re)started the GUI on a hunch, at which point they started to be
playable.

Finally, are you running MiP headless/SC on Linux or Windows? If it's
Windows, I'm going to be controversial and recommend you consider Linux
 - one thing about Linux is things either work or they don't, and once
working they keep working, there is no middle road.

Well, at the moment the PC that's acting as our SC server is a general
workhorse, and has to run Windows for umpteen reasons. I've wondered
about getting another box to act as a dedicated SC server, and Linux
might be an option; but I have bad memories of how much work it took to
get Mandrake working on our old PC. Of course, things must've improved
considerably since then; but I haven't had the need or the inclination
to try again... yet.

On my Squeezebox controller - when I browse by album, it shows no album
art.. when I go all the way into actually play the song, it finally
displays the art, plus it creates a NEW jpg by the name of
AlbumArt_{0B6BE3A3-9D5D-488B-8802-69C8D696E85F}_Large. But still,
even after that, under album view on the controller it doesn't show the
artwork.

Should I just open a trouble case with Logitech?

What I want is for the server to shut down a set time after the music

I am surprised that streaming music is not seen as an activity.

Keep in mind the adding a dot-G device to a dot-N network does NOT have the
same massive performance penalty that adding a dot-B device does to a dot-G
network. The SB really doesn't need the bandwidth and as Pat mentioned,
dot-N is still not standardized. I'm sure there will be a future device
that is upgraded, but if the dot-G support is your only downside then I'd
say go ahead and pull the trigger and get a SB.

 Thanks!

There is no support for 802.11N anywhere! Each company is using their
own version of the future possible Standard (read 802.11N is not yet a
Standard). One company's N router works with another company's N
card only because both fall back to 802.11G! At this time if one wants
to run N, I strongly recommend buying all the same brand WiFi (like a
Linksys router and wireless NIC). This is currently why Slim Devices
only uses G. If one has an N router already, the Transporter, SB3,
and Duet will work with it fine because the Router will fall back to
G.

As far as going with another Network Media Player, be my guest. This is
the Slim Devices Forum and most folks here are going to tell you to get
a Squeezebox. It is a better unit and less money. You are not keyholed
into using an amp that is in the box plus you can use any computer as
your server (or build your own if you know what I mean). ROKU is crap
(I gave mine away, not even bothering to list it on EBAY). The Sonos is
expensive. And in my opinion, have you all boxed in with what you can do
and can't do. And they have no Plugins. The Squeezebox is a much better
value and has so many possibilities. For the price of a full base Sonos
setup $999, you can buy a complete five room setup with a Duet and four
receivers! And you get to choose the amps and speakers.

These are hard choices picking between these two systems. Squeezebox
being a better value, more flexible, the Plugins (check the WiKi), and
open source makes it an easier choice in my book and in my experience.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter won't populate album art

2008-06-09 Thread mathewbeall

Getting Closer!

Directory Scan (3125 of 3125) Complete 00:03:02

Merge Various Artists (69 of 415) Running 00:02:50

SqueezeCenter has finished scanning your music collection.00:05:52

For whatever reason, it appears as if the server is not even doing an
artwork scan - and I can't figure out why. If I just have a few
directories, it does...

HELP!

Matt
