Not sure what the benefit of the Iphone is other than touch screen?

Re: [slim] Online radio stations strike big deal on royalties

2009-07-18 Thread MrSinatra

i think that article is factually incorrect.

over the air FM/AM stations are NOT exempt from royalties, (what
laughable hogwash!) they DO pay them, and pay them AGAIN if they stream,
albeit under different terms. one doesn't cover the other.

secondly, i know of NO gov't license for interent only stations, but
there may be something to that; i'm not 100% on that, but i doubt its
the way the article portrayed.

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-07-18 Thread bpa

Unlike http/icy streams, mplayer doesn't seems to decode the metadata.
That said, feeding mplayer metadata back into SC is v. hard.

Prior to 7.3.3 for AACplus support - I used a trick where SC stripped
the transport protocol and extracted metadata for display on players and
then fed the raw audio stream into mplayer to decode into PCM.

I quickly tried the same approach with the ogg/flac. It didn't work as
SC seems to get confused (this is not an expected setup) and wanted to
play the stream directly.

Re: [slim] Artist logic bug?

2009-07-18 Thread XanderH

Hi,

I've had a similar issue. I ended up adding a 'ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK
SPACE' (http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/chars/spaces.html) to one of the
artists. You can't see the difference, but SqueezeCenter does. :)

Adding even more ZWNBSP's you could even have multiple artists with the
same name in your library...

See for yourself:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/FgYI0dhRbkAhdz1lXzeAhJuY/full.jpg

I haven't had any unwanted side-effects using this method, I just hope
it'll still work in newer SqueezeCenter versions. Other
whitespace-characters won't do the job (SqueezeCenter just ignores a
normale space, it ignores a non-breaking space in mp3-files, ...)

Still, I would love to see a way to solve this without changing my
tags. ;)

The folowing sentence cointains a few dozen of Zero Width Non-Breaking
Spaces. Try copying it to a text-editor and moving the cursor with left

[slim] Softsqueeze skipping at start of track

2009-07-18 Thread itm

I'm running Softsqueeze 3.7 on a Athlon XP64 machine (XP SP2) with 2Gb
RAM. It's a dedicated media centre machine, with nothing else running on
it. I'm finding that it skips a split-second of each track during the
first 10 seconds. There are no skips again until the start of the next
track, when it does exactly the same thing. The Softsqueeze console
doesn't show any errors.
The server is Squeezecenter 7.3.3 on a Windows Server 2003 machine
(Core2Duo with 2Gb RAM, not running anything else apart from a web
server). I did a full rescan to try to resolve it but without any
success. Connectivity is via gigabit ethernet.

Can anyone suggest how to diagnose/resolve this?

Or maybe a cleaning of the cache folder for SC .
Search for CleanSqueezeCenter_DB on the ready nas forum.

Is there a pattern to this any certain file type that is rebuffering ?

I play FLAC files. FLAC is certainly larger than mp3, etc. Maybe it's
just that Squeezecenter has more trouble streaming FLAC than other

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-18 Thread 86atc250r

Chances are extremely high that it is a problem with your network or
your internet connection if you are streaming in a music service or
internet radio --- not running the latest version of code.

If it were a fundamental software problem related to streaming, it
would be a widespread, catastrophic issue for everyone the forum would
be flooded with angry users.

Have you done any network bandwidth testing or anything else in attempt
to isolate the issue? If it's your network, internet connection, or the
station you're listening to, you have a couple options.

Fix your network. If the device you're streaming to is wireless, wire
it and see if the situation improves. If it does, you're dealing with
a wireless issue. FLAC streams at a MUCH higher bitrate than lossy
formats like MP3. If you are having trouble with FLAC, chances are
*HIGHLY* likely you have a network problem. FLAC will exacerbate any
underlying network problems - however, even FLAC should stream fine if
you don't have network issues.

Switch internet providers or get a faster service. Just because you
can successfully browse the web on your internet or network connection,
doesn't mean you=re not dropping packets, experiencing high latency, or
running at a lower rate than the audio you're trying to stream.

If all else fails, you can increase the buffer for internet radio
stations.

Personally, I've found that the Squeezebox line streams very reliably.
I have about seven devices at my house and about three at my parent's
house, all wireless. Both systems always running the latest release
software.

The devices never rebuffer, even when streaming from the internet for
hours at a time, with the occasional exception of one of my SB3 devices.
The problem with that device is that it's connected in another building
via wireless bridge with a directional antenna that has to blow through
a metal building to connect back to the mothership. The signal quality
is very low (barely enough to even make a connection) and the connection
is unreliable - in reality, it's amazing the SB3 works as well as it
does under these conditions and streams well most of the time.

I use FLAC for 95% of my music collection, and I use a wireless
connection for the link to the SB3 client. I get 100% solid
performance, and have never seen a rebuffering message on FLAC playback
(occasionally with internet radio, but that is understandable).

This is not to say you aren't having problems, because clearly you are,
but I can also assert that under different conditions 7.3.3 can perform
flawlessly. I have noticed an increased number of rebuffering complaints
in these forums, though, so we have to entertain the possibility that
something is going on.

* Although your connection is wired, it may still be worth doing some
throughput tests from the SB3 client (Settings == Information ==
Network test.) A bad router could still screw up a wired connection.

* Try swapping out for a different server hardware, even though you
don't suspect the ReadyNas. Having a fresh install on different hardware
would eliminate quite a number of variables.

* Try a factory reset of the SB3 in question.

* Try using software clients (Squeezeplay, Squeezeslave, Softsqueeze)
instead of hardware ones just to eliminate the SB3 as a source of
trouble.

If you would do all the above, you would have eliminated in turn the
source, the connection and the client and I am quite convinced that one
of these will cause the problem to vanish. If so, you will know a
great deal more about where to look to finally solve the issue.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-18 Thread GeeJay

I've had rebuffering issues of late as well, but have managed to fix
them. I was tempted to blame the 7.3.x upgrades, but turns out it's
been a combination of other factors.

First, I've been slowly building my FLAC collection, with new music as
well as reripping some CDs to FLAC. The rebuffering issues invariably
arose when playing FLAC tracks. Problems likely would have popped up
earlier for me had I not been playing mostly mp3s until recently.

Second, I bought a new, larger LCD TV earlier this year. The SB3 and
router that I have next to it (and was next to the old set) started
having the rebuffering problems not long after I replaced the TV. I
didn't connect the dots at first (for some reason everything worked fine
for a week or two, but maybe I wasn't playing the SB3 much during that
time...new toy and all), but I finally switched from a wireless
connection to a wired one and fixed that problem. Must have been
interference from the new set.

Third, the SBR in my billiards room developed the same problem a few
weeks later. Hooked it up to a powerline adapter (which the PC hosting
SC is now on since I discovered the issue with the TV), and that didn't
fix the problem. Replaced it with a spare SB3...still had issues.
Finally checked the throughput on the powerline adapter and realized it
was worse than a good wireless connection. Finally moved the SB3 to the
other side of the bar where it has a clear line of sight to the router
(which I'd moved from behind the TV to a shelf I built over it when
trying to fix Problem #2). Problem solved.

I guess the moral to the story is that even after months of faithful
service, something new gets entered into the mix and can screw up what
has been a reliable network. I've had other issues pop up, too...my
wife's treadmill will draw so much power it makes my powerline adapters
worthless when it comes to streaming music, new devices added to the
network has messed it up, etc.

My advice to anyone experiencing these issues is to explore EVERY
possible source of network problem before blaming the software. I have
umpteen examples of that being the case for me.

I had a similar problem (see my thread about Squeezebox Boom dropping
Internet Radio), but not identical to yours, using radio stations via

the plague) but it was repeatable on the stations I use.

Just yesterday I discovered that downgrading SqueezeCenter from 7.3.3

immediately. When installed, the older SC also downgraded my Boom's
firmware from version 47 to 40.

Since I was primarily using SN rather than SC, I think the firmware was
the cause of my problem. I have not tried reinstalling 7.3.3 since
then; just too happy to have it working again to fiddle with it.

Hope this helps you.

Re: [slim] Setting Sleep from SqueezeCenter...

I expect there should be. SqueezeCenter appears to use URLs to represent
iTunes playlists tracks, so you should be able to use something like
playlist play itunesplaylist://biglongurl. I don't use iTunes myself,
but I expect you could find the URLs by using the SqueezeCenter web
interface and hovering over the hyperlinks as you browse your iTunes
 playlists.

Good thought, but what appears when you hover over a playlist name is
what I take to be a database query (browsedb.html...) rather than a URL.
It doesn't look like anything I can use. It's not a big deal since I'm
really only interested in attaching a couple of playlists to the Boom
presets. I can open the iTunes playlists in SC and then Save them under
a new name to get them in to the SC Playlists folder. I'll just have to
remember to update them when and if I update those playlists in iTunes.

One final question. Is it possible to add one more command to the
string to cause the display to show what is playing? As it is now it
displays Now Playing (the string Now Playing, not what is playing).
I tried adding a button right at the end of the command list, but that
didn't do it.

In any case, you've made one happy 71 year old Kid with KidsPlay.
Many thanks.

As for the fact that there are some iPhone streaming apps now, that
doesn't change the fact that Apple can, and does, deny developers the

To me, the biggest drawback of the iPhone has nothing to do with
SqueezeCenter control: it's the necessity of having to jailbreak the
phone in order to unlock it. I'm keeping an old unlocked Nokia phone

how far I get with that.

PS: free to good home: 1 Nokia 770; 1 Nokia 810N. PM me.

However you could do a server side installation and then run the

After you wired it, did you go through network setup? If not, it's
probably still using wireless. Press and hold the (back/left) button

If you're sure it's using Ethernet, you may want to check if there's

I agree that's a limitation.
However, it's my experience that this is actually not a lame decision
but one that makes this phone work.
I have tried quite a few smartphones and coming from that business side
I've looked into quite a few others. All, without exception, but the
iPhone soon run into trouble as soon as you have severall apps running.
They get slow, people complain all over the place about battery lifetime
and you get lots of crashes.
My last one, a symbian phone, had the nice habit of rebooting right in
the middle of a phone call if it considered you are in a low memory
state. Sorry, these kind of features are not for me.

Mobile devices don't have virtual memory, and I tell you, it's just
nice to be able to test an App and then know, if it works in the test
environment, it will do so while being used. For exactly the reason that
you have background apps you get that on no other platform. Just can't
guarantee it.

I curse the fact that it doesn't have background processes quite often,
but I also know it's the single most important reason why this is the
first of the about 5 or 6 smartphones I've used that didn't suck.

As for the fact that there are some iPhone streaming apps now, that

Well, I agree, that's the theory.
Practice is that there are even lots of Apps on the App Store that are
in clear violation of Apple's guidelines and don't get pulled. Pandora's
being one of them, btw.

On your next trip to Europe, get an factory unlocked one from Italy or

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-18 Thread maggior

Here's a bit of what my experience has been like:

I've NEVER experienced rebuffering messages in the past. I ran 7.2.1
for a long time because each time I upgraded to a new version I would
have dropouts. Always, going back to 7.2.1 would fix it.

7.3.3 has been pretty solid for me, but I've experienced the dreaded
rebuffering situation. Perhaps the dropouts that would occur before
were actually rebuffering? Perhaps it's progress now that it rebuffers
rather than dropping the entire stream on the floor waiting for me to
hit play to resume? I don't know...it's possible.

It seems to coincidental that these rebuffering messages are popping up
now that I've moved to 7.3.3. They are annoying, but infrequent enough
that I've decided to stick it out. I like the stable player sync
feature too much to let go of it :-).

It seems to on particular days that the rebuffering will be a real
issue for me. When this happens again, I'll have to take the run the
network test advice. Perhaps something is interfering on only certain
days. I've already been through moving the microwave :-) (a much
simpler solution than running CAT-5 through my finished basement).

All of my SBs are wireless and my entire library is FLAC. 99% of the
time I have no problem, but man is it annoying when there is an issue!

Sure, you should be able to use a regular ethernet cable (don't need a
crossover as the Mac should be auto-sensing). You will need to set the
IP, netmask etc manually on the SB3.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

I have not actually tried to do this, but I believe all it takes is a
Mac Mini loaded with Squeeze Center and an Ethernet cross-over cable.
One might need to enable the Mac to see the SB3, but again I wouldn't
know until I tried it. Give the Ethernet cable a try and see what you
see.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-18 Thread 86atc250r

I've been streaming all day on 7.3.3 - Rhapsody no less, in my shop,
across the wireless bridge where it is barely connected at all (rain can
drop the connection completely - luckily today is very nice).
Streaming for around nine hours now as I work - rebuffer free...

Check your network :)

Kidding aside, you can go into settings and under your selected player,
go to Now Playing and set the display to Show Buffer Fullness.

FWIW, in streaming Rhapsody here at the shop (on the bad connection) it
buffers about 131 seconds within a few seconds of starting the song and
stays there (within a couple tenths of a second) until it counts down to
the end of the song.

Streaming Radio Paradise (internet radio) it buffers a couple seconds
and stays there (again fluctuating a couple tenths).

Streaming local FLAC files, it will actually buffer 100% of the next
song before it even starts. It stays solid at 100% until it counts
down to the next. In the song that I watched closely, I had about 39
seconds buffer with a FLAC file. With 39 seconds you can take quite a
disruption before you should ever see a rebuffer message.

Have a look and it may help you determine the cause of your issues.
You may be able to determine if your network is struggling all the time,
or just at certain times, maybe helping you isolate the source of the
trouble as well.

I wonder if you could coax more info from the debugging system. The
Perl source suggests there *is* an itunesplaylist URL format, and that
if you set the plugin.itunes debug level to Info, it should log messages
like Got a playlist ($url) named $name when you play an iTunes

One final question. Is it possible to add one more command to the string

adding a button right at the end of the command list, but that didn't

I'd try adding button browse; button now_playing;. I wouldn't do
simply now_playing because that button will toggle the Now Playing
format visualizer options if you're already in Now Playing; by sending
a Browse button command first you should avoid that. It might be cleaner
if you could send a command to jump into your When Playing screensaver,
which is something that my SaverSwitcher plugin almost allows (it gives
an Activate Screensaver option if you're using my ContextMenu plugin),
but unfortunately I didn't make a CLI command for that.
