I have the newest squeemote for my iPhone and just updated to the newest

my phone. If I'm lucky, the 'now playing' is accurate, but other than
that, I can't do anything. Is anyone else having issues with this combo?

In version 0.95 there is no button to disable SlimControl and put in in
the background. The next release will feature that.

You can always use the task manager to bring SC to the front again. No
need to kill it from the task manager.

So you can either close it explicitely from within SC, or hit your
hangup key, and then reactivate it from the task mangr.

Stay tuned for the next version.

I wasn't using the task manager to end the SC, but the only way to
switch away without shutting down the app. On my Omnia I can usually
minimise apps with the end call key (but not for SC). Usually this
would be done also with the X on the top right if the app isn't full
screen.

[slim] IR sensor problem with SqueezeBox v2

2009-08-01 Thread Aslak3

I've had a 2nd generation SqueezeBox for about 3-4 years and it's worked
great until recently.

Basically it no longer responds to the remote. It's definitely some
kind of hardware problem because even at startup it wont respond to the
right button to enter setup mode. I've verified the IR remote is
actually working with a digital camera.

Because its not under any kind of guarantee, and because I have little
to loose, I've had the unit in bits and a friend of mine, who is a
dab-hand with a soldering iron, has re-soldered the IR sensor on the
display PCB. We tried this because the joints looked a bit ropey, but
it didn't help.

It's very annoying because otherwise the unit works fine. I would
probably still be using it even without the IR remote functionality,
save for changing my network over to WAP from WEP (and there is no way
to configure the network password without the remote!)

Has anyone got any ideas? I would really like to get it working again,
as it would work great with the SqueezeBox Boom I recently purchased for
another room in my flat. :)

Lawrence

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-01 Thread GeeJay

The OP didn't say it was a firmware problem, at least not in the initial
post, just that something is wrong and he doesn't think it's a network
issue. Others are wondering the same thing, and firmware is just one
avenue of discussion...and I do think that if 35 people voted for the
bug instead of just 5, it probably would matter.

Facts are facts, however, and the fact that so few people are
complaining means that those saying it must be a network problem are
more likely correct than those saying, I don't think so. That's the
nice thing about allowing people to vote on bugs...it gives you some
factual data to support the claim that a problem is widespread.

As for me, I'm having a hard time isolating the issue if it is my
network, since all the other fixes I've tried have failed to work.
Having said that, just last night I was presented with more evidence
that my problem probably is network-related, as other users in the
household started complaining about slow internet connections on the
same network and say it's been going on for weeks.

It just goes to show you, ya never know... ;)

Re: [slim] Poor Quality Internet

2009-08-01 Thread SuperQ

Hrm, in theory you should be able to maintain a radio stream on that
slow of a connection. However there are a lot of factors upstream at
the ISP they're connected to that are involved. There could be line
problems with the DSL equipment.

Here's a true story. A friend of mine bought a coffee shop. After a
while, he realized that the internet access on their DSL line was
absurdly slow. I offered to help debug it for him since the ISP wasn't
being helpful. I followed the wiring all over the building trying to
figure out what was connected where. As I was tracing the phone line
source for the DSL I discovered the previous owner had installed DSL
line filters on the phone lines, including the DSL line. I looked at
the signal levels being received and was supprised they had working DSL
at all. After removing the filter and re-wiring the network things were
great.

BTW, bugs that get more than 6 votes are quite rare in the SD Bugzilla
data base: http://tinyurl.com/slimvotes2 (This bug has 7 votes.)

Ya never know, is what I'd like people to keep in mind. Some people
seem to assume that every manifestation has a single unique cause. While
this issue seems to be related to network congestion, it could be also
unnecessarily vulnerable to network congestion due to a firmware bug, or
streaming protocol bug or... a combination of these. Perhaps I am only
*hiding* an underlying bug by making my network super-robust using wired
connections, or switching to .11n connections in unoccupied 5GHz
channels.

This was the subject of a few conversations with Dan Evans.

See

Gross failure of SB3 - barcode in display [Incident: 090629-003132]

on your own database.

Most of the time it was fine, but if I powered down (or if the supply
failed) the factory test barcode would appear. With some persistence I
would be able to force the SB3 to re-initialise, but to get it to talk
to SC I would have to re-install 7.3.3 over the last installation - I
never found another way to get going. Ben was not happy with that - I
guess my prefs file might be quite messy now.

In the end Dan said, probably a hardware fault - have a new one. I
wasn't going to argue!

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-01 Thread BrynClarke

I've come in late to this discussion - I have rebuffering on everything
- Internet radio live, BBC Listen again, QNAP NAS FLAC, QNAP NAS MP3...
Runs for about 10 seconds then stops and rebuffers for 20. I have SB3,
wireless, and other things (several laptops, PS3) use the wireless
network, so I'm starting by assuming that the wireless network is the
problem. I recently did a clean install of latest SqueezeCenter on
latest firmware on QNAP TS109. I have a Draytek Vigor2600G router.
Signal strength to the SB3 is only 25-30% and network test shows, on
practically any speed up to 1500 kbs, 10 seconds of 100% then dipping
well below that and slowly climbing up again.

My question (happy to start new thread or find another thread if this
is inappropriate here) is simply what remedies are available? I can't
change the geography of the house or go wired, so do I need to
investigate different routers, or can I piggy back two routers and
dedicate one for music streaming, or... I need to know what my options
are, so, in the first instance, where in this community or elsewhere to
seek advice.

All help gratefully received.

careful repositioning of the router. A very small movement can cause a
big change in strengh depending on the surrounding walls, electrical
implements etc. Failing that you could think about ethernet-over-mains.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-01 Thread dsdreamer

BrynClarke;444934 Wrote:

Are you sure you are using the least occupied WLAN channel? Check with
Netstumbler how many of your neighbors are trying to use the same
channel as you. If any other channel is less occupied, move there. Or
switch on automatic channel selection, if your router supports it.

Failing that, I think your two best options are move to draft 802.11n
in the 5GHz band, or use HomePlug(tm) or similar ethernet powerline
adapters. Either way, you're going to be spending some money.

In most countries there is plenty of bandwidth in the 5GHz range used
for 802.11a and draft 802.11n equipment. Your best bet is to use MIMO
equipped 802.11n adaptors (ones having two or more antenna), which can
largely compensate for the additional RF propagation path loss
experienced when moving from 2.4GHz to 5GHz frequencies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

I have has success with Apple's Airport Express units as a means to
provide draft 802.11n/5GHz connectivity to all my Squeezebox units.
These need to be supported by a suitable 802.11n/5GHz or dual-band
router, of course. You can bridge from your existing network using an
Airport Express, or replace the whole kit and caboodle with a new
dual-band router.

Several users here have reported success with HomePlug type powerline
adaptors, and this would be worth considering as well.

[slim] Bug or intended behavior?

2009-08-01 Thread MeSue

If I'm listening to Slacker Radio and I have scrobbling enabled for
internet radio, and I mark a song as as a favorite so it will play more
often on Slacker, it also gets marked as a loved track on Last.FM. Is
this the intended behavior?

I'm undecided on whether I like that or not. How do others feel about
it?

 'Can't find address for SqueezeNetwork'

Does anyone know how I can resolve this?

* Do you use SqueezeCenter?
* If so, which version on which OS?
* Do both players work well with a local SqueezeCenter, assuming you
use one?
* Do both players have plenty of wireless signal strength, if you use
wireless?
* Are the network configurations for both players identical?
* If you reboot the problem Squeezebox and select SqueezeNetwork as the
music source as part of the setup, does it still give a problem, or only
when you attempt switch over from SqueezeCenter to SqueezeNetwork?

There is a DNS bug in the latest released 7.3.3 SqueezeCenter that
could *potentially* cause this issue (but odd if it only does for one
player and not the other).

If this sounds like it might be relevant try a recent 7.3.4 nightly,
e.g., from here: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.3

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-01 Thread chinablues

Rebuffering was a pain for me. I have a transporter duet.
Wirelessly, the Transporter on its own worked fine about 95% of the
time. Synchronizing the duet to transporter caused problems, almost
always with FLAC files. Wireless strength to Duet receiver probably the
main issue. (seems to me the Transporter has better receptivity than
the duet in picking up wireless signals). Installed 3 homeplug units,
master at computer, one slave unit at Transporter Duet receiver
locations. (TV, Blu-Ray Player, AVR, TV receiver unit Transporter all
connected to an ethernet switch this connected to the Homeplug unit in
living room. (Aztech, 200Mbps ). Worked fine ever since.

 Tried it. No joy.

Could you look on the SqueezeCenter information page (right-most tab on
the page that pops up, after selecting Settings). Can you check that
both players are reported as present there and have identical firmware
version numbers (version 127) and have been allocated distinct IP
addresses in the same subnet? You should see something like this:

 Player Model: squeezebox3
 Firmware: 127
 Player IP Address: 192.168.1.18

 Player Model: squeezebox3
 Firmware: 127
 Player IP Address: 192.168.1.22

Could you also swap the locations of the two players and report if the
problem stays with the same player or is somehow location specific?

I know this may seem tedious but, it may help diagnose the problem.

Regards,

Thanks for the tip on looking on the information page.

Everything looks in order there.

I know this is probably a silly question, but if I swap the players,
will all of the current settings be retained (I mean when I swap them

It shouldn't matter where they are in physical space, the
player-specific settings should be retained just as if you had
power-cycled them without moving them.

If the problem is player-specific and not location specific, you should
try a factory reset if you haven't already done so.
