Hi

I would really like to hear about iphone users and other remote
control solutions to use at home as well.

How do you make it work?
Does it work well?
Was it worth the money spent?

Should I buy one?

Tell your stories...

There is no track information using any of the search entries (Genre,

entries and a genre, artist or album list below). But when i continue to
a specific album the name of the album is displayed but not the tracks

The firmware is (correctly) non polarity-inverting on all platforms and

implemented? - then, no.

Given that detection of absolute polarity is only possible by humans in
certain well defined circumstances ref AES:Greiner + Melton (e.g.

paid to this when manufacturing media or indeed audio gear in general
except in studios where channel polarity is a critical issue...

...I wouldn't hold my breath!

I can remotely invert polarity on my TACT. I have never used this
feature since I do not possess any music which sounds different with +/-

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-02 Thread Squeezemeister

My experience of the SB3 is that rebuffering over wi-fi appears to be a
stragely random act. One day the system will be working fine, the next
I'll have issues, especially on radio, and even on FLAC files played
from my HDD. Therefore, I do not believe 100% that it's an SB3 issue,
but something to do with interference from elsewhere, which is not
regular, but intermittent. Programmes like Netstumbler tell you which
router channel you and your neighbours are on, but it doesn't show the
level of interference from non-wi-fi sources such as cordless phones or
microwave ovens.

FYI inSSIDer has a companion, but chargeable app that shows you the
level of interference in your environment that is not down to your
router.

In my own case, I installed Solwise 85mbps homeplug Ethernet adapters.
On my ring main I get on average 68-72mbps speeds. The SB3 runs
perfectly when wired (famous last words). I would prefer wi-fi, but
there just seem to be too many variables to ensure perfect operation.
My environment is not all within my control though, which is why I am
reluctant to just blame the wireless SB3 and its ever changing s/w.

On a different note, what is the need for daily changes to the SC os?
Even I know enough about s/w to recognise that constant change almost
guarantees instability for the user.

Also note that plenty of things interfere with WiFi signals, such as

have conflicting (or closely conflicting) signals.

I used to work in an office where the local Subway sandwich shop

My issue is that when connecting my SB3 to my DAC via co-axial digital

Could it be an issue with the DAC? Thanks.

Oh - sorry I thought you were talking about absolute polarity :-)
L/R inversion... is your DAC seperate from your amp? - if so just swap
the DAC-AMP cables over...
If not, then swap your speaker cables over at the amp end.

Yes, the amp and DAC are separate, I will try and reverse the digital

Changing the speaker end would make everything else wrong, so hopefully

No - not the digital coax!!! - leave that alone. The two cables between

I guess it would be possible to paint it without removing the rest of

So with a better soundcard and a properly configured OS you will have
 24/96.

But regarding 192kHz what would SqueezeCenter do ? SC probably has
some kind table regarding the different players abilities ? a SB3 would
get at most 24/48 and a transporter 24/96 ye olde slimp3 would probably
 get 16/44.1 wav ?
Transcoding done by SOX and flac on the SC server.

Your SqueezePlays abilities is your computers sound system/soundcard ?
How is Squeezecenter going to know anything about that ?
Development of SP seems to be on hold for now it probably needs some
 work in this area.

I am building a PC based media server/streamer supporting 24/96 and
want to control it using iPod Touch. I really need Squeezeplay to
support 24/96 so I can use the iPeng remote application. You imply that
this should work but I seem to get audio playing at 44.1/96ths of the
proper rate bith when streaming 48k and 96k.I have successfully had
MediaMonkey and Winamp supporting 24/96 but their remote control options
are rather limited.

I have tried both an M-Audio 2496 soundcard and the BelCanto 2496
USBLink both of which work at the proper rate with MediaMonkey and
Winamp (the 96k light on my DAC is illuminated) but not with
Squeezeplay. I'm using Windows XP professional. The BelCanto USB link
is a driverless device and seems to successfully bypass KMixer with
other applications.

Is there anything I can do or does this require further development on
Squeezeplay as other posters have impled? I'd give anything to get this
working properly and I suspect quite a few others would too.

3) Since the SB system is designed to work using WiFi, it should be
robust to bursts of interference shorter than a buffer length.
4) Since most users will apply these devices in a non-ideal WiFi
environments, the performance of Squeezeboxen under such conditions
should be a known quantity (i.e., tested as part of the release process
for new versions of SC and new hardware products).
5) Bug 9393 is still open. Buffer underun doesn't recover itself...,
and may (just possibly) be related to this issue.
6) It is quite possible that nothing is wrong with the presently
released hardware and software in respect of streaming performance under

Hope someone can help with this.

If I have been using my SB3 with Squeezecenter on my PC, and then press

If I then go and switch off my PC, it starts popping up with cannot

only want to be prompted with the message cannot connect to

This has been pointed out before, and it's clear by now that users
really don't like it, but the developers had their reasons (e.g., to
help support diagnose issues).

You can follow some of the discussion of the bug (now an enhancement
request) here: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10393 . The
enhancement request currently has 10 votes and is targeted for release
8.1.

It was also quite a long thread in these forums a little while back.

But, please make it 2x2 MIMO and _dual_band_ .11n because:

1) We need to get out of the 2.4GHz band, it's just not going to work
well enough in the long term.
2) If you go to 5GHz to escape the co-channel interference, you will
lose 6dB of signal strength on average, and a bit more besides due to
lower power transmit power, but a 2x2 MIMO system will recover about as
much as was lost compared to a single antenna solution at 2.4GHz.
3) If an Airport Express can implement (selectable dual-band) 2x2 MIMO
in its diminutive form factor, so could an updated version of any of the
current SB products.

Re: [slim] Unable to play media from subscription service due to inability to authenticate

2009-08-02 Thread rwgorz

I'm having the same issue with authenticating to the service.

The demo does indeed play on the Squeezebox by using the following
URL:

http://demo:d...@live.str3am.com:2530/demo

However, using my actual login credentials in the format below results
in a HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized message on the Squeezebox:

http://username:passw...@live.str3am.com:2530/secure

The username has an '@' in the middle of it. The '@' in the middle of
the username (u...@domain.net) may mess with the correct syntax for HTTP
authentication. I did try to substitute a '%40' for the @' (escape code
for @), thinking this may remedy this issue, but the result was another
error message '401 Authentication Required.

Not sure how the syntax should go in a case like this. Any ideas?

In hindsight that is about the only thing that makes sense, given one
player could succeed and the other not. But I was assuming you had used
DHCP, so I didn't go there.

Glad it is working properly now!

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-02 Thread BrynClarke

Are you sure you are using the least occupied WLAN channel? Check
with Netstumbler how many of your neighbors are trying to use the same
channel as you. If any other channel is less occupied, move there. Or
switch on automatic channel selection, if your router supports it.

I got hold of Netstumbler and saw 8 other Access points within range,
on variouis channels. Channel 13 seemed to offer best S/N, so I went
with it. Didn't solve problem.

I then moved SqueezeBox three feet, signal strength went up from 20% to
60%, and it played FLAC for 3 hours without a glitch. !!!

Unfortunately, there's no way it can stay in that position normally.
So I've ordered a couple of Homeplugs.

Thanks for the help

[slim] Rhapsody and Pandora periodically unvailable

2009-08-02 Thread Marcner

I have a transporter, boom and squeezebox. Periodically for no reason
that I can tell, I will periodically get the message with Rhapsody that
this player does not support Rhapsody. A Squeezebox2or higher is
required. At the same time if I try and use Pandora I will get a
message You must be a subscriber to use Pandora from this device. I
will get the message on all player. Nothing I do seems to make a
difference, but over times hours to days the messages will go away and
I can use both services. It always happens with both services at the
same time. I can access my personal library without problem
This have happened over mutiple versions of Squeezecenter. I can access
Rhapsody and Pandora directly on my computer during these times.
What gives?

[slim] Controller: Sort order in Artist category differs from sort order in Albums category

2009-08-02 Thread pnielsen

When browsing Albums, I get the desired sort order Artist, Year, Album.

However, when browsing Artists, the selected Artist's albums are not
sorted by year.

I have set the Controller setting Settings-Advanced-Album sort order
correctly, however this setting does not seem to affect how the albums
are sorted when browsing artists.

I believe this might be a bug in the latest 7.3 and 7.4, because I
recall that this was done correctly in some older release. When the
album sort order is set to sort by Artist, Year, Album then Artists'
albums should also be sorted by Year, Album when browsing Artists. This
seems to be broken unless there is a Artist sort order settings in the
SBC that I have overlooked...

My ignorance or a bug?

Peter

No, the sort order doesn't apply once you're into the artist's list of
