Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-19 Thread pablolie

Thanks for the pointer.

As a sports motorcycle rider myself I actually have the stuff around,
so that is convenient.

I will decide what to do. I also have enough SB3s around the house to
reshuffle them if I feel like it for cosmetic reasons.

Re: [slim] Letter of concern: Too many different players..?

2009-10-19 Thread RonHatl

Let me just say that I consider new firmware as an integral part of a
Squeezebox Server software release (as they almost always go hand in
hand). So my concern is just as much related to firmware releases.

That said; I'm not THAT concerned! I'm just stating a point that I
think should be considered by the Logitech Squeezebox leaders. I'm NOT
saying that any of the alternatives above should be considered. Maybe
JUST steps to ensure (keep/develop) the right STAFF (quantity, quality
AND enthusiasm) should be considered?

All I wanted with this post was to point out a matter that I think
deserves a little bit of attention from the Logitech Squeezebox leaders.
I am very sure (am I?) that the matter is in good hands :-).

I used that stuff for years. I used to roadrace motorcycles, they have
very thin plastic "bubble" winshields that scratch if you look at them.
Meguiar's does wonders, but if you have serious scratches, you need to
first use the polish and then the cleaner.

For sure. Especially if you are one of the folks that claim that LPs
sound better than CDs. These folks tend to be obsessive about LPs,
turntables, cartridges, vertical alignment angles, etc.

When I was younger, I had a serious turntable and a very nice LP
collection. The CD seduced me with its lack of need for voodoo cleaning,
alignment, etc.

There may actually be some validity to the claim of the vinylphiles, but
to me, give me a Transporter playing FLAC anyday for serious listening,
or a Boom, Radio or Duet for nice sounding if less serious stuff.

Back On Topic: I decided long ago that the time (and somewhat the
effort) of transferring my LPs to FLAC is not worth it when the CDs are
availble. I know, some CDs are terribly mastered. I've only taken the
effort to transfer LPs that are out of print and wonderful.

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-19 Thread pablolie

Let me be clear: I would not have bought all the products you see in my
sig line unless I loved the concept and potential and on 99.99% of the
time execution on the product. I remain a big fan of the concept. I have
always irrationally loved playing music of my historically very reliable
SB3s (I did some nightly beta stuff in 6.x, but have not since, sorry, I
have a stressful day job and have interests on the side).

My meltdown is something that happens when you get in the way of my
self-rewarding ego and its ability to get a music fix. Sorry. But not
really. It *is* an emotional area for some of us, which is why we came
to pick quality products early on.

So I am worried, especially looking at the looming release of 8.0 and
the fact I wanted to upgrade my main player (the one that has the
scratches now) to a Touch...

They record/play something related to the music in the LP.

I've yet to read anything good about the USB turntables. There was
also a USB tape deck - that made me cringe too :-).

My old turntable from back-in-the-day is still working. I just
replaced the cart last year. I still have my vinyl - I couldn't bring
myself to get rid of it.

My turntable is nothing special - a JVC direct drive from the late
80's. I put a Grado cartridge on it last year. I'm perfectly satisfied
with the transfer's I'm able to make.

For the record, here is the USB soundcard/phono stage device I'm
using:
http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp?type=86&cat=9&id=128

I use this in combination with ASIO4ALL and my Vista laptop to record
vinyl (currently using Audition 3) and to listen to music from my
library via the headphone jack using J.River Media Jukebox.

2009-10-19 Thread maggior

I'm glad to see that you've calmed down. I was extermemly frustrated
when I purchased the Duet a little over a year ago. I really felt let
down, escpecially since I went out of my way to sing the product's
praises!

I got over it and didn't let it kill my enthusiasm for the product.
I'm just more cautious now with SW releases that I'll install. I will
also not jump onto any new hardware products - especially since I don't
need any at this point.

Given your situation, pehaps you should evaluate your need for using
mySB. Given what I've read here, I have no plans to move to 7.4 - I
don't have the time and I'd much rather spend my time enjoying my many
recent music purchases :-). I was concerned though that I'd lose the
use of Slacker, which my kids listen to a lot. I can still access it
even though I'm running 7.3.3 - I just access it via "services" rather
than by switching my player to mySB (or whatever it's called now).

Is there any way you can get by with 7.3.3?

Can you see details in a Playlist? This currently doesn't work for me,
which is probably a bug in iPeng.
I can reproduce the issue and from what I see it's a bug in Squeezebox
Server (unless it's intended behavior). The "add" command issues an
"addall" command.

Thanks Daniel. No call yet and no mail but the day isn't over (well it
is here in Denmark... and no response from the Danish support!) I would
expect a fast respond from Logitech because of the things I have gone
through. Nothing really happened Friday other than I know that at least
three people from Logitech know my history, but it was late... then
weekend and now it is late Monday. I will be rather grumpy if I wake up
tomorrow and haven't received at least an update on what is going on.

Too bad you had to sell your transporter - I would recommend the Duet
but... real frustrating to have something that looks so promising but no
music (unless I turn my pc on).

You take care too

Apologies if this has already been asked. I looked for it and didn't

to the end of my playlist, which I understand is what this is supposed
to do. Works as described for my local FLAC library, but does not work

album is appended to the end of my playlist. All the tracks that I
didn't select show up as having length of 0:00, the track I did select

0:00 get their real length, and it starts playing from track #1 of the

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-19 Thread pablolie

The problem with 7.4.0, it seems, is that it is still a beta release but
delivered as a semi-mandatory "stable" upgrade. And that was a mistake.
If it had been optional, and there had been a warning, I would have no
right to overly complain.

Since it was forced upon me given the fact I have hisotrically used
mySB.com, heck, I can be bitter. And when the solution is "hey, go to
7.4.1, which is a *true* beta nightly, you know that there is a weird
release situation going on.

Since I initiated the topic, I also need to say I have calmed down. I
understand the pressure the developers are on and all, and I want them
to know I carry no personal gurdge against them whatsoever. But also, as
customer since 2005, I have never knocked a device against a wall in
frustration. The SB3 now has a little dent and a few scratches as a
result of a silly momentary overreaction that only affects me in the
end.

But I think caution is advisable as 8.0 and the Touch and more
aggressive schedules loom to get ready for Xmas... I have no idea how
they are going to deal with it, but I will be increasingly bitter if my
music experience gets affected over time.

Eeek I eyeballed one of these USB turntables :) omg is there no limit
to how crappy things can be, If you want vinyl for no money at all get
something from a flee market you can find turntables made of actual
metal and wood , change the pickup and maybe the drive belt , instant
vinyl bliss !
I have to visit my attic to bring my old systemdeck down, but I have no
MC stage Phono Stage or vinyls anymore .

Really ?

What about the mouseware 2007/2008, where logitech wasn't able for
month (!) to deliver a mouseware not producing an error message EACH
time when the pc what shut down ?

(Former) Slimdevices staff is at least listening to their customers, as
you can see here in this forum ! And they try their very best to fix the
(o.k.: still much too high) amount of bugs.

IMHO big mama logitech is forcing SD people to release their software
to early, and the employees have to pay for here, in reading f.e. pablos
(still understandable) lines of hate and many other posts like this.

Not too nice, for both customers AND SD people ...

I'm not sure where the 'ABR' and 'VBR' come from, but what you're
probably seeing is a the bitrate of the Apple Lossless file (1021 kbps)
and the resulting FLAC file/steam at 705.6. The 705.6 number, though,
is a little suspect, as it's exactly 1/2 of the uncompressed PCM
streaming rate of 1411.2 kbps.

I posted recently in another thread that the bitrate (in kbps) for
lossless files is computed by:

file_size_in_bytes * 8_bits_per_byte / track_time_in_seconds / 1000

The 1411.2 kbps number mentioned in the first post above is the
streaming rate of PCM, so I would assume FLAC streaming was disabled at
the time.

Hi erland,

is is a valid point. I would be glad to, but only when I have time
Most of the time my family is using devices, sorry would like to use
it? but has an issue. If I do not reboot each receiver and controller in
the morning - there is no music at my house.
If I would get pair of extra devices with some significant discount as
a Beta program package - why not, I will be filling all bug reports and
perform even predefined tests - would be glad to do, but paying some
hundreds I would expect it would be working.

and this would be fine when it is a community type of the development,
but Logitech is a bg company with very well established
processes and known and proved quality records!!!

Would you mind to have a keyboard, which may give you different
keystrokes depending on the firmware?
I do not think so ;-)
When you buy a mass product - it should work
If you target big audience - it is a clear indication from the amount
of partnership programs lunched recently - this should be out of the box
working solution with no ongoing hassles.

I would not be so mush surprised if Duet and some other troubling
products would be removed from the market, sorry, replaced by more
advanced ones and all "investment" we’ve made into our audio-live will
buried in the dust. Looking on the differences in the architecture and
solutions - it looks like it may happen - too many and too radical
changes are happening.

And - many people were reporting problems.
Who of us was followed by the development with the request and
clarified the set-up, parameters and other staff?
No one, may be few.
This was in good old time, when it was a community product.

Unless they have a direct access to each device - I would be glad it is
a case and all problems are resolved after some time without any touch
to the remote. This would be a great thing!
Let’s hope that Logitech is really working hard on resolving what needs
to be resolved and will not dump Duet and will surprise us with the
solution we like and are proud again.

And you know, we will bring more and continues money flow to Logitech
account purchasing different services and enjoying the music at out
fingers!

Yup, that's the issue I've always been having with iPeng and SC 7-7.3.
Exactly :-) And cache flushing does not help.

With SS 7.4.1 I do not seem to experience this - which is really nice!

I do however, still feel that the app is a bit slow on my configuration
(Mac Mini, 1.25 GHz, music collection in 256 bit AAC format), even
though the UNIX command "top" indicates at least 20% idle time even
during the most demanding "search'es".

In generally my CPU load according to the TOP command increases shortly
when pulling a lot of data from iPeng (especially if I do a MusicIP
Mix), load does however not exceed 80% and it immediately drops back to
5-15%, which is the normal load when just playing music. On the iPhone
iPeng is still showing "Loading..." long time after the peak. It
eventually finishes a few seconds later - but it makes it feel slow.

But it is MUCH better with 7.4 than it was before. Overall I am pretty
happy with the great work done by Pippin.

I think they are more mainstream now because PCs don't have a phono
stage on their input and modern receivers don't include them for the
most part any more. There is a mainstream demand for these devices now.
I got one last year that has a built-in headphone amp, a DAC with both
phono and line level inputs with optical, USB, and coax digital outputs
for under $100. This allows me to perform vinyl transfers using my
laptop without a stereo receiver - a much neater setup.

For some reason, last year there seemed to be a surge of USB turntables
on the market, along with phono stage/USB soundcard devices. Vinyl
continues to remain popular with many.

The problem is that everyone doesn't want to participate in beta

If you are using the latest version of WaveInput 1.05 for Windows -
there is no need to modify install.xml. Please use 1.05 and use
automated install process.

If you are not using the latest version then there are 7.4
incompatibilities which comes to light under some config in 7.3 which
may be causing problems. However first prove your driver can do audio
capture using Recorder.

Strange - this is exactly teh same sort of behaviour I was having.

I installed 7.4.0 and started having problems with the SBR in the
kitchen (the SB2 in the lounge is always rock solid).

Blue light disconnecting... coming back white ... no sound - even
though the controller was showing the track as playing ... even worse
was that the SBR started playing all by itself at 7.30 one morning.

So - frustrated went back to 7.3.4.

All was OK for a a few days until yesterday when exactly the same
behaviour started happening again. No music even after much muttering,
cursing, pressing play, pressing next, pressing previous etc etc etc.

Out of desperation I unplugged the SBR from the power, waited 30
seconds, plugged it back in - and Bingo - Music is back in our life.

So i guess my forced power removal reset the XILIX ?

what are you trying to stream (eg, local MP3s, local FLAC, radio
streams, music services like Pandora, etc.):

I've tried both Internet radio and MP3 music, booth unsync.
Slightly better with mp3 i think.

are you doing any transcoding:

No, not that i know of.

a description of *how* they are out of sync. Do they start in sync and
then drift apart or are they never in sync? How are out of sync are
they, fractions of seconds or several seconds? Do they re-sync when a
new track starts?:

What could describe it better than a small movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DF2qBzjn3mY

The out-of-sync it is I would describe it as somewhere between
fractions of seconds and a few seconds.

What sync settings?:

I've no idea, the standard i guess?

Please help!

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-10-19 Thread TMS

Thanks for this. Works fine :)
Now if the stupid squeezebox server would be smart enough to not use
proxy for local addresses, everything would be fine.
Took me a while to remember to open ports in the servers fire wall :)

Try the 7.4.1 nightly build. I believe it solves the problem you are
seeing

I think you'll find that other touch screens you have used were too
insensitive ;)

It is always interesting to see people who have used resistive touch
screens have their first encounter with an iPhone/iPod Touch. They are
always stabbing at the screen, it takes a while before they realise what
you really need to do it stroke the screen rather than viciously tapping
it.

(no doubt the same applies to other devices with capacitive screens)

Yes, it will. Yes, all of them. Yes, SoftSqueeze as well. What ?
I SAID ALL OF THEM !

*squeezeslave* does support a display similiar to the slimp3.

The display can be the computer screen or an LCDd supported display.
You can also use the keyboard as the remote or a remote using lircd if
the computer it's running on has an infrared receiver

You need to be running SBS 7.4 or apply a patch to SC 7.3.x for this to
work.

Re: [slim] Official iPhone/iPod Remote App?

2009-10-19 Thread Panotaker

I just got my Transporter on Friday. I found out about Ipeng yesterday
and got the app for my Iphone. I love that app! It is super slick. I was
surprised that I got it working with no problems and got the basics
figured out. The touch screen is a little too sensitive, but I probably
just have to get used to it. I was going to order the Duet Controller,
but now I don't have to.

That's great as I am sure iPeng sells units for Logitech. Even more so
when iPeng can make an iPhone a player. I'd have though the iPeng/iPhone
combination would be a route into buying Squeezedevices for a lot of
people.

Think the third party Squeeze plugins and applets are important?
Then 'vote for bug 14194'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14194) so more can be
made.

Re: [slim] Official iPhone/iPod Remote App?

2009-10-19 Thread morris_minor

Neither of my two controllers gets half as much use as iPeng. For me,
this was the killer app that steered me towards the iPhone in the first
place; it even made up for the iPhone's crap camera (after the old N95 .
. ).

The latest update to iPeng was a big improvement, too. Thanks Pippin!

This may be a problem with the driver for your card.

Do your testing using the Windows Accessory Recorder - if you can get
Recorder to work then it is usually possible to get WaveInput to work.
Using Recorder is easier for testing as you will not have to
stop/restart SC if you make conf changes.

Did you read the Wiki entry on trouble shooting ?

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-19 Thread AndreE

Pascal Hibon? you've brought valid point.
It was the same for me. I've evaluated Squeeze Philosophy against Sonos
and some others, coming to the market.

It is exactly the Philosophy and the ideas and community behind were
main selling points for me as well,
but now
it raises concern about the way how rapidly software market and its
good products are sliding to "ship and forget" way of dealing with
customers.

Logitech is a great company - they know how to make good products and
how to deliver them to the market. It just looks like the target group
for Duet and some other new in the family is a bit different to what
Logitech used to have - this may be an issue and may require a learning
curve.

I really hope that Product management is reading this forum, at least
time-to tome.

and it is correct: Christmas is coming - it should be perfect by that
time, otherwise it may be a big problem afterwards. Net-Radio and music
definitely take off - and Logitech wants to be at the market maker area.
