Re: [slim] Need help understanding synchronization between Squeezebox Server Mysqueezebox.com

2009-11-13 Thread bpa

However, this app does not seem to have a way to add custom podcasts to
 the list of pre-configured podcasts

Did you try adding them in the Podcast app tab on mysqueezebox.com.

I think the intention is that your podcast list is the same whether you
are running your player on SBS or mysqueezebox.com.

[slim] Squeezebox receiver + iPeng - reliable?

2009-11-13 Thread vasik

Hi, my chief would like to have his music collection in 3 offices. I
thought about buying 3 receivers a control them from iPhone or iPod via
iPeng, so he has touch controller.
I do have SB Duet, and love it, but I sometimes do have stability and
reliability issues.

Would the receiver + iPeng be a stable setup? I really don't need any
special functions, my main goal is to provide him a reliable setup, he's
no computer geek and I don't have time to fix something everyday...

What features are supposed to be synchronized between the Squeezebox

Plugins are installed and configurable and usable only on your local
SBS server on your computer.
Apps are installed on MySB.com but are usable by both MySB.com and your
local SBS server.
SBS will always have more customization and configurability options
than MySB.com as SBS uses MySB in the background PLUS has all of the
features and functions of the full SBS server program.

Current player integration between SBS and MySB is basically limited
to the player settings (brightness, text size, etc..). Changes made on
the web UI for such settings (SBS or MySB) are instantaneous back to the
player, but obviously the player must be connected to the apropriate
server (SBS or MySB) where you are making the web UI changes.

What I don't know is which server's player settings take precedence.
If SBS and MySB have different settings for screen text size, and these
settings are integrated or shared, do SBS settings prevail over MySB?
Or vice versa?

[slim] Squeezecenter to stream to many rooms?

I'm wondering if it is possible to setup a computer/server with
squeezecenter to stream to many rooms without having a squeezebox in the
other end.

Example, in my bathroom, i just want speakers, not a squeezebox of some

connect the speakers i want to run dLAN® Audio extender Starter Kit(

From my testing, the player settings (brightness, text size, etc) must
be configured on the server to which the Squeezebox device is
connected - SBS or MySB - regardless of whether the integration status
between the SBS and MySB (enabled or disabled). And that's exactly what
is so confusing. The integration should mean that all these settings are
synchronized: you make a change in MySB and it should propagate to SBS
and vice versa. But none of these settings is currently synchronized.

The integration between SBS and MySB works only for apps, but again,
the Podcast Player app installed in MySB and showing in iPeng does not
show up in the My Apps list in SBS.

Finally, when the Squeezebox device is connected to the SBS, the
integration between SBS and MySB results in the Podcast Player's
podcasts added on MySB showing in the iPeng Podcast Player app, but not
visible anywhere in SBS; therefore, SBS acts as a proxy between the
Squeezebox device and MySB in this case. The SBS's Podcast plugin seems
completely useless if you want to use iPeng to control your Squeezebox
device. You can uninstall it and the SBS continues to proxy the podcasts
added in MySB to the Squeezebox device, and iPeng can see and play these
podcasts.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox receiver + iPeng - reliable?

2009-11-13 Thread pippin

Well, my experience is that most of the potential issues you could be
seeing are between the server and your Receivers.
If you've got a stable setup there, iPeng should work pretty solid.
I'd recommend a decent NAS or small media server with SBS on it and to
wire the Receivers wherever possible. However _my_ Receiver is on WiFi
and I'm having zero issues.

One thing you should be aware of is that you cannot setup a receiver
with iPeng, you need a Controller or Net::UDAP for this so I would add a
few more considerations:

1. Is a Classic an option instead of the Receiver? It can be configured
using the IR remote
2. If you configure it using Net::UDAP I would recommend to have a
stable configuration using a 24/7 server so you run low risk of losing a
connection. Also the Receivers should stay powered.

[slim] Information overload problem

2009-11-13 Thread luuk

Dear all,

I hadn't consulted this website for a few months and recently updated
to the latest SqueezeCenter (after a new Vista install). I was used to
running SoftSqueeze and remembered I could install it straight from
SqueezeCenter. However, I could not find info on this in SC anywhere. So
I searched this forum ... HUGE problem. Enetering Softsqueeze gives a
vast number of hist with the top threads running for many pages and
apparently not dealing with Softsqueeze at all. I just don't have the
time to go though all of them!! I diod discover that SoftSqueeze has now
apparently replaced by SqueezePlay and consulted the WiKi. The download
given, however, is the SC download. I have now gone full circle.
SqueezePlay is apparently integrated in SC but SC doesn't reveal this
secret. The help option is no help either since it just sends me to the
general Logitech web pages. This site is no good either since a search
for SqueezePlay gives mne a vast number of hits in threads taht aren't
devoted to it at all.

Sorry, but that is not the way to get people to use something that is
new. I am desperate and quite annoyed that there is no way of getting
quick info on a basic question ... how do I play music on my PC using
SC? If SqueezePlay is indeed integrated in SC it is ridiculous that it
doesn't show up somewhere obvious like the Home menu.

That's probably because SqueezePlay is still beta software, and as far
as I can see they've moved all the beta software off of the Logitech

No it's not good flac is aproximately 800kps you need moore .

The test is such that you should test increasingly higher rates for a
couple of minutes the maximum rate that can hold near 100% for a
prolonged time is the max kps rate you can expect to play stutter free.

My wifi flutters between 2000-4000 depending on the weather (my now 14
neighboring networks) Ethernet cabled players get 5000 all day long.

To rule out the if is the server or the wifi, connect the player with
an cable and run the tests (it's usually the wifi but you have to be
sure ).

Btw is the server wired ? if the server is also wireless, you are using
double wifi hoops so you use 2 times the bandwidth, first to the wifi AP
then from it so it sees twice the load. If you are planning on streaming
lossles files with high bandwith demands use as much wires you can, at

Yes. Only the packages use the system's mysqld by default. As I'm running from
trunk (svn checkout) I was too lazy configuring this before. I didn't care
about the additional memory load.

you apply the moonbase file to the second one only?

I ran the test against both. The difference for the modified version was below
a minute for the grand total, thus I only posted one of them.

*SoftSqueeze* is no longer supported by Logitech or Squeezebox Server,
there for it has been removed from the application. If you still see
links to it, please let me know so I can have them removed.

Please follow the link Aubuti provided to the Community Supported
version of SoftSqueeze if you wish to use that plug-in.

-

*SqueezePlay Desktop Player* (that's the full name) will -eventually-
be it's replacement. It's in BETA currently, and can NOT be listed on
the 'official' Logitech download site. You would have to go to the BETA
software download site.

Re: [slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-11-13 Thread andrei_c

I am in the same boat as most posters in this thread, looking for a way
to stream my 1TB collection wirelessly to the iPhone. I tried iPeng
dance and Squeeze Mobile but unfortunately neither worked for me. Good
attempts though.

So I consider writing and publishing my own iPhone app which will not
rely on QuickTime to playback Squeezebox stream. It's doable in 1-3
months. I am not looking to make big money, just to do myself and a
community a favor and recoup time stolen from family.

The question is, how much demand is there? Would you use one? Would you
pay $9.99 price point for it (provided it is 100% reliable?)

Let me know what you think. Or, maybe there's another solution that I
should try instead?

My opinion, as just another user, is that users will find out about SP
when it is released, because then Logitech will make it easily
accessible via the main download pages. Until then, I think it's safe to
say that Logitech only wants the more interested users (who may frequent
the forums) using SP. A main reason for having a public beta is to get
bug reports from users in the field. If the user doesn't come to the
forums, he/she is unlikely to file bug reports. But they might try to
contact support, which is not equipped to support beta products.

If you only search on one keyword (eg, SoftSqueeze) you're going to get
tons of irrelevant results. If you do a better search -- eg, using both
the words 'Squeezeplay' and 'download' -- you'll see something useful in
the top few results, such as the thread '7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds
with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available'

Btw, while SP should not go silent when you try to sync with SB, you
should be aware that sync with software players like SoftSqueeze and SP
is not guaranteed. There are too many factors that SBS cannot control,
like sound card drivers, for sync'ing of software players to be
reliable. You might be lucky and get good sync with SP, but don't count
on it.

SoftSqueeze and SqueezePlay aren't products, per se. They are free
software.

Why does a company need to support software that doesn't make them
money?

SBS is free, BUT it is required for use of their Squeezebox products.

SqueezePlay is a nice add-on, but not required. In fact, from a
business sense one could argue that it might hurt sales. I have 6 PCs
with Squeezeplay - maybe I'd buy more Receivers if Squeezeplay didn't
exist?

It's clear that Logitech SBU - like most companies today - are pretty
resource-constrained and need to focus their attention on things that
will strengthen their business. As much as I want them to fix and
release Squeezeplay, I'd rather see them fix the remaining issues with
SBS.

Furthermore, SoftSqueeze isn't even Logitech software. It was written
by Richard Titmuss back when he was just an SB user. Now that he's
employed by Logitech to do much more mission-critical work, the
community has picked up the ball for continued SoftSqueeze development.
What obligation does Logitech have to make such 3rd party software an
integral part of the SBS package? None that I can see.

Also, if I recall correctly, part of Logitech's abandonment of
SoftSqueeze is that at some point the existing versions stopped working
with newer versions of SC/SBS. They weren't going to hold up development
of the server software to deal with a software player that they are
sunsetting anyway. And it certainly wouldn't help anyone to package a SS
that doesn't work.

[slim] Squeezeslave and 2 soundcards

2009-11-13 Thread fphredd

As I mess around with the htpc, i figured I'd give squeezecenter another
chance (been using winamp) since my buddy got a transporter I needed to
set up for him and I started dreaming of buying one of my own...or at
least a touch when they're available.

The computer has onboard audio with as part of the HDMI out that I use
for watching netflix on demand, etc on the TV. For music, I use an e-mu
1212m soundcard which has asio drivers going to my stereo's preamp.

When I try using squeezeslave either with or without asio, I get no
sound from the stereo. When I disabled the onboard sound, I got music.
How do I use squeezeslave for music through the e-mu card without
disabling onboard audio? Can it be done?

Thanks!

I like the idea of using SOX, but I'm not sure exactly how to set it up
to work with Squeezebox Server and/or MySqueezebox. (Windows Vista
platform)
