That's what they call the market. Why would anybody want to sell cheaper here

there's really no need for a sales forum.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-03-31 Thread soundcheck

Hi folks.

I am playing around with squeezeslave ( 0.9-140 svn pull) on Linux Alsa
1.0.22.1

No idea if below has been discussed before.

2Qs.

1.

Is there a way to assign different names/ids to squeezeslave if I got
more than one slave in the network?

If I run more than one slave ( different machines) in the network they
can't be distinguished and share the same database. This should not be
possible at all anyhow.

Would be really nice to be able to assign dedicated IDs of choice to
each slave in the network.

2. Alsa output

Is there a way to choose between plughw and hw on the output option
-o?
Currently it is not clear what squeezeslave is doing here. I do
understand that -l shows all available outputs - as defined on
asound.conf or asound.rc.

It would be really nice to have a pretty simple output option as done
with e.g. aplay -D plughw:0,0 || hw:0,0.
99% of all Linux player allow that direct routing selection.

THX

The issue started when I upgraded from 6 to 7 and has never disappeared

Has anyone more information on this issue?
If not, what would be the proper way to debug this?

(is there a HOWTO on setting up a development environment for

@ ralphy.

THX a lot- It works with the MAC address. The only problem is that you
have to rename the player on the server. Otherwise it is called
squeezeslave. Would be nice if I could assign a dedicated player-name
on the commandline.

alsa:
I do understand the generic output approach.
I just wanted to make sure that nothing is routed to plughw if -l says
hw:0.

That also means if I run e.g. SPDIF out (output hw:1,1 on my
soundcard), I would have to create a virtual device in .asoundrc for
addressing the 2nd subdevice. Correct?

Again THX a lot.

Generally, I like the idea. Being directly in front of ones buying
audience has advantages. Having said that, the problem is all the
baggage that comes alone for the ride. As you even said, next somebody
will want to sell speakers or other audio gear. Then somebody will have
a car head unit for sale, then a car, and who knows what else.

Plus all the non-squeezebox folks will join the forum so they can sell
their cell phones and knock-off purses, then the 'For Sale' section
becomes spam city. The admins and moderators have enough to do without
policing a 'For Sale' section in the Forum. With Audiogon and Ebay
available and geared toward selling, the idea seems more like a
non-starter. Also Audiogon has a Wanted section that one could place
an add in, Squeezebox Forum Member wants used SB3 at a fair price to
come to a loving home full of FLAC files.

Re: [slim] For Sale?

2010-03-31 Thread alfista

While the idea has some merit, a normal forum is a pretty poor platform
for running ads, often requiring a lot of moderation effort. When not
entered through a template like on proper advertising sites, ads tend
to lack vital information (contact details, location, shipping options
etc). And if posting replies is possible it regularly leads to heated
discussions on the requested price, sometimes questioning the mental
status of the seller or just as often those who object to the requested
price. Or other pointless discussions in general.

Maybe a matter of definition, but I think a line in your sig with a
link to an eBay auction or similar would not be violating the forum
rules and work pretty well. Active posters would get more exposure,
thus rewarding teh regular contributors in the community.

[slim] Connecting two rooms to one SB3?

2010-03-31 Thread orenb

I currently have two SB3 units - one in the living room and another in
the bedroom. I'd like to have the music in my study synced to the rest
of the house, but I've given up on getting SoftSqueeze to sync
properly. I don't want to buy another SB3, so the only alternative I
can think of is to connect the SB3 in my bedroom to the receiver in the
study using a long (~5M cable). I'd be happy to get some advise on which
of the following options would be best:

1. Connect the RCA line-out of the SB3 to an RCA splitter, and then
have two pairs of cables connected to each receiver (the one in the
bedroom and the one in the study).
2. Connect the first receiver using RCA and the second one using either
of the two digital line-outs in the SB3 (optical and coaxial).
3. Connect the SB3 to the bedroom receiver and then use one of the
receiver's RCA out ports to connect it to the receiver in the study.

Note that I intend to keep the SB3 in the bedroom, because I can
control the SqueezeBox server from the PC in the study.

I'd be happy to hear about any alternative options that don't require
buying another SB3.

Thanks! :)

Buy a Touch or SB Receiver, just kidding but that would work and not be
an SB3. ;=}

Are we talking about 16 feet (~5M) separation? I have no trouble using
a Toslink or Coax over that distance especially if the second receiver
has its own DAC. Also there would be no Sync issues as both receivers
would be playing the same exact input material. The drawback here is
actually not being able to play different SBS streams on these two
receivers, it will always be the same music.

I don't like the RCA splitter idea for a number of reasons. Using the
first Receiver's tape out to feed the second Receiver would also not be
one of my choices.

[slim] SLIMP3 popping sound between tracks?

2010-03-31 Thread rolfsky

Hello all-

Just recently purchased my second Slimp3 for audio distribution to the
back bedroom.

Plugged it in, sync'ed to my server and started listening merrily away.
Device seems to be in very good condition, etc.

However, I have a problem: between tracks there is a slight popping
sound, a small click or burst of at least one, sometimes two. Almost as
if someone is dropping the needle on a turntable. The sound is not as
loud as the output and sounds faintly like a amp popping on power up,
power down. Seems to do it with every track change, though I don't
always notice it.

It's not enough to warrant sending it back to the seller, but it is a
minor annoyance. Any thoughts?

Cheers! and thanks for your help.

Re: [slim] SLIMP3 popping sound between tracks?

2010-03-31 Thread rolfsky

ah, a good question Gary.

No, these are regular MP3 files, some VBR, some CBR, served from a
Ubuntu machine in the living room. The same files play fine on my other
Slimp3.

What's the root cause of the scenario you're talking about? perhaps
it's related...

I had a pop or click at start of every song only on AAC files (and
only when I was trying to run the SqueezeCenter (not SbS) software on

Re: [slim] SB3 bricked? (perpetual reboot)

2010-03-31 Thread ToddSTS

So I sent a support request to Logitech and they wrote back:

It sounds like device has a damaged memory module. Do you have a proof
of purchase? You may still be under warranty for this particular
issue.

I bought it back in 2005 so there's no way I'm under warrantybut
does anyone know enough about the squeezebox3 to point me towards the
memory module. I'm not completely inept with a soldering iron and a
digikey catalog. I figure what do I have to lose as it doesn't work at
present.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] SB3 bricked? (perpetual reboot)

2010-03-31 Thread gnnash

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but this sounds an awful lot like a
bad power supply or power related circuit to me. I've seen this
behavior before with other sorts of consumer electronics - the device
powers on, demands a larger amount of current than supplied.
Capacitors in the power circuits can keep it afloat for a while, but it
eventually runs out of juice and shuts down. Then the capacitors charge
again, supplying current for the device to start up again.

Especially considering how your squeezebox stayed on for shorter and
shorter times before a reboot, I'd suspect something in the power
supply or power regulation in the Squeezebox itself.

Anybody fixing these in the production code?

There is nothing to fix.

This is basic security of the underlying OS.

Re: [slim] SB3 bricked? (perpetual reboot)

2010-03-31 Thread ToddSTS

I yanked the wireless card's daughter board and applied
powernothing, not even the Toslink lights up. When I put the board
back in the same behavior repeatsLogitech logo.Squeezebox
logo.blank...approx 10 secs elapsesLogitech logo...etc. ad
nauseum.

I asked the Logitech support email guy if they would sell me the parts
to fix it since its out of warranty, when he mentioned it may be a
memory module. I would like to buy a new wireless daughter board just
to see if that would fix it and I'm wondering if that my be what he
referred to as the memory module.

We shall see what they say.

Suggestions welcome.

Todd

Re: [slim] SB3 bricked? (perpetual reboot)

2010-03-31 Thread Nikhil

I think we need to make a sticky of this problem of dead/continuously
rebooting SB2s/SB3s/Classics. There are at least 4 other threads that
discuss this or a similar problem. If we have everyone clearly list
their problems in a single thread, we might be able to find a solution,
and make it easier for future sufferers as well.

Here are the threads:
