Thanks for your suggestions epoch1970. I almost gave up this setup, but
checking this thread this morning i found your answer.

I really like to keep my storage separate from my running services. It
would be nice to get this working. I'll checkout your suggestions.

I'll think i do a feature request to build in a option (if possible) to
wake up other devices (NAS).

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-07-16 Thread Ikabob

When I use ipeng to save a favorite station toy Slacker Favorite Station
list, it will save the station however it bumps off an existing saved
station. So, my number of saved favorite stations is limited to a
certain number. To correct the I have to go onto the Slacker webpage
and delete all the saved favorites and reload them . I can then add
some favorites on the webpage which are unlimited. But then when I try
to add a station via Ipeng the problem begins all over again.

Is this an ipeng issue anyone else has experienced? Can it be fixed?
Thank you.

I'm surprised it works without a network patch cable - did you already
have the Boom configured to connect to a wireless network and then went

Yes the two Booms were already connected with another logical WLAN,
parallel to my normal WLAN, but with a much shorter WPA-PSK.

Presumably this is the reason why I did not nead any patchcable.

I am very happy now, because I can use on WLAN for all my devices. And

as the jewel sleeve user, I'll note that the sleeves are a little larger
than normal (so there is room for the full inserts without cutting) and,
I suppose more importantly, there are two slots within each sleeve.
One is lined with a soft felt like material for holding the CD
itself. Probably not necessary but this may be one reason these cost
more. They will send you a free sample if you want to check them out.

Once in a while they do a major sale on the sleeves. So I just stocked
up in the past. And this is all rounding error $$ compared to what I
spend on the CDs themselves anyhow ;-)

The Jazz Loft sleeves sound similar in that they have enough room for
all inserts. The front booklet goes in one pocket and the back insert
and CD goes in the other. The pockets are loose enough to fit a
booklet and CD in the case of 2CD sets. The difference from your
description is the felt lining - the Jazz Loft ones are just a straight
polythene-like material. One thing that does worry me a bit is that, in
the sleeves, the CD faces are right up against the insert on one side
and the plastic sleeve on the other. In a jewel case, the CD only
really touches anything near the spindle and the rest floats free. I
don't know whether this has implications for longevity.

You are right that the cost is marginal on a per CD basis but I had a
biggish collection (100s) to catch up with and there were international
postage charges on top of the price I mentioned above. Anyway, I might
try the Jewel Sleeve ones when I need a new batch.

Thanks for the information.

Yep, sounds like the felt is the only difference. I too wonder about
how this storage affects the CD longrun. On the other hand, I truly
hope that I never, ever, ever look at the CD again once stored (even
before ripping, I read the liner notes once when I purchased the CD and
rarely looked at them again). I've got my FLAC version, lots and lots of
backup drives in 3 different physical locations in two different cities.

1) I personally couldn't afford a conviction as I might lose my job

[slim] SuperDateTime not retrieving data

2010-07-16 Thread ajkidle

I use the SuperDateTime screensaver on my Booms and SB3. Yesterday my
router got reset, and since then it's not pulling any weather data.
Everything else works fine: local music, Rhapsody, etc. (When this has
happened in the past, it's been an indication that SBS couldn't see the
internet.)

I'm running the latest VortexBox software with SBS 7.5.1. I've tried
turning off the plug in, restarting, and turning it back on. I've also
tried re-installing SBS from the command line. No dice.

Any ideas for things I could check? I really miss having weather data

I don't see it as a moral or enforcement issue but rather a practical
one. Under the current state of play, the creation of new recorded
music is not a financially viable activity. That's why so many fewer
new recordings are being produced these days.

The recorded music business will continue to wilt, and perhaps die,
unless the problem is solved. It would be great if everyone who likes
recorded music would obtain what they want through normal commercial
channels and avoid facilitating others not doing likewise. Don't assume
the solution is someone else's concern.

We're a small company and we simply don't have the resources to do

Re: [slim] Can you still purchase IR remotes?

2010-07-16 Thread tcutting

For the Touch, look at:
http://buy.logitech.com/store/logib2c/en_US/DisplayCategoryProductListPage/categoryid.28136200?WT.ac=sc|downloads||dd

For the Boom, look at:
http://buy.logitech.com/store/logib2c/en_US/DisplayCategoryProductListPage/categoryid.17096400?WT.ac=sc|downloads||dd

You get to these by going the the particular player on the Logitech
website, then select support and then select replacement parts.

Sure. What audio editor do you normally use? What OS? etc?

But the easiest approach may be to convert the flac files to .WAV/pcm
and use any audio editor program. Then just re-compress to flac. This
will lose tags, but for a small number of files it may be easier.

I use Windows Vista.

For tagging I use TagRename, but have not used any audio editing
software previously.

I have about 50 files, some of them are very short - such as 10 seconds
in length, featuring jingles and radio station promos. Just a bit
annoying having a 5 second gap at the end of the file!!

If you use Audacity it will extract all your tags from the source file
and rewrite them to the new one.

Just remember to save the file once edited, you choose FILE EXPORT
and select a new directory so you don't overwrite your originals until
you're sure everything is ok.

Are you asking about the IR remotes that came with the SB2/SB3 units?
If so, I too could not find them on the Logitech site.

Okay the Touch remote is probably the best match for an old SB3 remote.
Support seems like an odd place to hide products you can purchase, but
at least now I know!

Re: [slim] Can you still purchase IR remotes?

2010-07-16 Thread web161

I just spoke with sales. They confirmed that they don't sell the
original IR remotes for the SB2 or SB3 units. In fact, they didn't
even know what an SB2 was as it's not listed in any way on the Logitech
site.

It's too bad. SlimDevices wouldn't have left us hanging so soon after
purchase. The newest SB3s can't be more than 2-3 years old.
Purchasing a Controller to operate an SB3 is ludicrous. The old IR
remote was the fastest interface around. The new remotes look nice,
but they are laggy.

It was a great line of products when it was Slim. Sorry to see it go.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-07-16 Thread Antoniop

Hi,
Sound stutters with squeezeslave. I downloaded the last version on the
svn and compiled it without problem.
I have a eeepc 702 with hda-intel sound chip. The stuttering is not
very important, but enough to be quite anoying.
I'm using mandriva linux with xfce. It uses pulseaudio.
Without any option, squeeslave uses a lot of cpu (around 60%), wich is
a lot even on my very slow cpu. So I tried the different devices.
squeezeslave -L
Output devices:
0: HDA Intel: ALC662 rev1 Analog (hw:0,0)
1: front
2: surround40
3: surround51
4: surround71
5: pulse
6: dmix
* 7: default
8: /dev/dsp
and the best so far is 0. With that device set, it uses only 4% to 9%
of cpu. Using dmix causes a crash at startup and pulse makes no
difference with default.
Squeezeslave is not the only one player to stutter on my pc. VLC has
the same problem, but totem gives a perfect sound.
Anyway, I have all my stats on squeezeboxserver and I like this
program, so i'd rather use squeezeslave.

I've googled a lot and didn't found a solution. Some help would be
gratefully appreciated !

Web161-
As Catbus indicates, Touch remote is fairly similar to SB3 remote, and
should work fine (a few differences... most notably the Brightness
button which I believe may be required for firmware update if you don't
have configured for auto). Boom remote is less $, and supports basic
functions on SB3. Older players are also supposed to support JVC IR
codes as well.

sox has a silence option for removing silence (digital zero or below a

Sorry everyone I sounded too melodramatic earlier. I've since calmed
down. I guess I'm not as comfortable with change as I should be.

I still get a lot of enjoyment from the Slim hardware. I guess I'm
just getting cranky in my old age. The 10-minute wait on the support
line was something I never experienced in the days of Slim. You always
got a person right away. I miss that.

Sorry...web

Re: [slim] Can you still purchase IR remotes?

2010-07-16 Thread eq72521

While the old IR remotes are no longer for sale, there may still be some
stock. For some time, my old SB3 remote (the ovalish one) was behaving
erratically (sometimes button presses just didn't do anything) and, on
the advice of someone else on this forum, I contacted support. They
wouldn't sell me one, but they sent me one for free. If you really
need a new remote because yours is broken, there may still be some left
for you.

If you asked politely you could probably find someone in these forums
willing to sell you an SB2/3/Classic remote. A lot of people here have
bought numerous SB2/3/Classics over the years and have remotes lying
around that they've never used.

The recorded music business will continue to wilt, and perhaps die,
unless the problem is solved. It would be great if everyone who likes

the solution is someone else's concern.
So you are suggesting that CDs should not be passed on? My CDs would

I cannot agree with your sentiments about the dwindling amount of

inefficient medium ultimately destined for landfill, the CD though.
Maybe you're just not looking in the right place.
