Re: [slim] Question about exactly what is streamed when using LAME encoder

2011-01-08 Thread Phil Leigh

robotron2;600748 Wrote:
Briefly on my set up: I have 6 total SB's, 3 are wired and connected to
good quality stereo systems, 3 are wireless and are SB booms or
 equivalent quality.

I generally run all 6 of my SB's synced - even if I am not moving
around the house I find that easier than tinkering with the sync
 settings.

Here's my question: on the wireless SB's I have enabled LAME conversion
to MP3 and maximum bitrate to 192k. The fact is, those systems are not
good enough for me to hear the difference with, and I find SB syncing
more reliable when bitrates are limited over wireless.

At the same time, I don't have any bit rate limiting on the wired
 players.

Someone in another thread mentioned to me that if you have players
synced and you play 96/24 content, a SB Touch won't get 96/24 if you
have lesser SB's on the network. One thing I am wondering about,
though, is is the same thing effectively true when LAME is enable with
one player and I'm syncing to others where LAME is not enabled -- ie do
I get effectively the lowest bit rate stream, are some players getting a
lossless stream while others are getting LAME.

Finally, is it possible to see what bit rate the player itself is
getting? I would have thought that this would be in now playing
somewhere, but I don't see it.

A synchronised stream is just one stream used by multiple players, so
yes, it will be the lowest common rate supported across the devices -
in your case if you set bitrate limiting to 192 for one player, all
synced players in that sync group will get MP3 at that same rate.
For mp3, the bit rate varies anyway during playback - the 192 is a max
value.

@blueadept: did you try to look in SqueezePad at the exact same place
where you find your lyrics on the Duet Controller?
A context menu opens when you do a long press on a menu-item (it's the
same menu you get, when you press the '+' key on the Controller).

Just to confirm, as expected the context menu works perfectly in
SqueezePad.

So anyone that just wants to be able to show lyrics for a song can
install Song Info and Song Lyrics plugins in SBS Settigns/Plugins and
then hold a while on a track in SqueezePad and select the Song Lyrics
item at the bottom of the context menu that appears.

2011-01-08 Thread ralphy

I had a similiar issue on a winxp machine a while back also using a usb
sound card. It turned out to be the hard drive was starting to fail.

I had errors in the system event log regarding the inability to access
swap.

I replaced the drive and have never had the dropouts since.

If there's nothing suspicious in the event logs you can try the -H
option to raise the process priority.

I've only had two issues with dropouts on windows systems, the bad disk
and wasapi on win7 during development. The wasapi issue was fixed by
making changes to the portaudio library config.

If all else fails run squeezeslave with these additional parameters
-dslimproto -dslimaudio_output -dslimaudio_http -dslimaudio -Ydebug.log
and I'll take a look at it.

This probably sounds mad, but I'd actually like SqueezePad for the
iPhone!

I've had an iPhone for a few months and I use iPeng. Yesterday I got an
iPad and purchased SqueezePad (complete with the in-app streaming
upgrade). the navigation in SqueezePad is *so* much better in
SqueezePad than in iPeng. Changing players, for example, is easy in
SqueezePad, via the dropdown, but in iPeng you need to do some cryptic
left-scroll or right-scroll which I've never really understood - I seem
to go in circles with it!

No need for streaming of course (would be nice though). But the overall
navigation in SqueezePad is excellent and I'd love to see that
replicated onto the iPhone.

I really can't get this to work. I have all the files (with lame encoder

 on the market ?

It depends on the gear. Digital electronics have a much faster design
turnover with discernible real-world performance differences. But more
traditional devices (and circuits) are very different.

I listen everyday through vintage era tube gear, running old production
tubes, most of which is now about 50 years old.

If they need service, I repair them without reservation. They
typically don't. I have no intention of replacing them with modern
replacements, as frankly, they still sound better than new gear, and
are far better built. We have other gear that is well over 20 years
old that still works superbly. I am not going to dump a heavy Thorens
or heritage-era Klipsch if they brake down - I will fix them.

But getting to the SB3, I would probably replace mine with Touches if
any of them malfunctioned. I use ours as simple wired head ends,
feeding higher quality outboard DACs. I do like the relative
simplicity of the SB3, and would miss that.

This is a modern product line that is generally still extent, so it's
still apples to apples. If the line were completely discontinued, I
might feel differently.

Re: [slim] Logitech Trade-In Program

2011-01-08 Thread Mnyb

The SB3 and Touch is in that price range when recycling them makes more
sense than repair in some cases.

That said my SB3 is 5year in February never had any trouble with that
one .
Seems to be quality stuff :)
I may even get my 10 years of service life from such low cost product
to.

I don't think that VFD is that susceptible to breakdown .

But compared to what ? and reading this forum SB3 fail comes in as:

Broken remote , WIFI-card, PSU or display and more seldom, the
mainboard itself except for damaged caused by lightning or a failed psu
or other stuff .

It does not have many parts no moving parts not much can go wrong .

So I understands that people wonders if they can fit a new display as
it one of few lose components .

Personally I think the SB3 is a design classic and i do want to keep
mine alive as long as possible, and the geniality off the slim client
powerful server design, makes it keep up with changes it is not
obsolete yet :)
How many 5 year old players runs spotify ? (with the help of a server
plugin)

Even if one keeps buying quality stuff you eventually end up with lemon
from someone, thats life.

One should be carefull with some garage brand hand made high end , it
takes experience to get quality and longevity out off stuff. They may
trying to get the best possible sound but neglects other factors.

Re: [slim] Logitech Trade-In Program

2011-01-08 Thread Pascal Hibon

The Transporter is a very good player but I believe it is a bit
overpriced. Especially for the age of technology you’re buying. I would
get the Touch instead. If you’re not happy with the sound it produces
you still can get a good DAC and have spent less money than you would
on the Transporter alone.
A second reason why I wouldn’t go the Transporter route is the
presumable short live span the device will have. I’m sceptic about how
long Logitech will be able to service it.

[slim] Local Radio List - Submitting Station

2011-01-08 Thread orosco977

Hello,

I am wondering how the local station list is created for the
squeezebox radio, in other words from where is the squeezebox getting
the station URLs that are listed under this selection. I am asking
because I don't see one of my local stations on the list and I am
wondering how I could get it to show up there.

Note that I know how to enter the URL into my favorites so that I can
personally listen to it but I want the station to be able to be seen by
others as well if this is possible. I have tried updating the URL on
various radio streaming lists.

This is a terrestrial radio station with streaming audio if that makes
any difference. I appreciate any help with this issue.
