I have now moved on to using vortexbox, so currently not running
momento frame to display album art but it was an interesting project,
as an aside also hooked up my laptop to the head phone output of my amp
and using some music ID software was able to identify any music, cd,
vinyl, squeezebox and display it too. There are some really cheap
webrowser tablets out there that do wifi but are pretty poor compared
to ipad so hence much cheaper ( €70-120) for 7 inch and above that
would access the squeezebox HTML file. I know hmv were selling some.

[slim] Logitech Transporter issue

2011-01-13 Thread sebadoh

Hello

I own a Logitech Transporter. Works fine, but there's one thing I
wonder about ...

When in standby, it creates a small sound that lasts for a brief
second. Sometimes two in a row, before it goes 20-30 seconds till next
time. I can hear this from 4-5 meters and it is quite annoying.

Hard to explain the sound, but it is no digital piipsound. Clearly, a
sound that should not be there ...

Anybody got any suggestions?

Sounds like the knob degaussing - normal!

Spotify seems to be working correctly now, thanks. Makes a big

Just to keep you busy though... I have all my players set to Play

 Completely agree. ;)
*If* they find the players in the store at all (usually involves
looking it up on their inventory computer) they will be in a different
category / location in every store.
Sometimes they are with computers, sometimes with the iPod docks,
sometimes in home theatre, sometimes with boom boxes
I know what you mean, it is the same here.

Having said that you can usually find the Radio. Because of its name
it can usually be found among, wait for it, the section with all the
radios in it. If you are lucky you can find the Boom there as well.
However I have yet to find a Currys, Comet or PC World (Best Buy's UK
equivalents) that stock's either the Touch or Duet (even though you can
buy them on their web site), let alone the Transporter. They are
products that most people simply do not understand.

When friends come round for dinner and see me using the Controller the
usual comment is how are you getting your iPod to play music through
your hi-fi. Well at least it is a conversation starter :)

The UK has a bit of a head start over the US here as we have DAB
digital radio. This gives us a hundred or so digital radio stations,
but it is a power hungry and expensive technology so people are
accustomed to paying around £100 for a radio you can only plug in - or
with limited battery life. It also means the portable radio section of
these stores is quite large - so the Radio fits in well.

I think internet radios are just beginning to reach the public
conciousness, so I reckon the Radio will be most users introduction to
the SqueezeBox line.

I have a friend who has just found, and become hooked on, Spotify. He
now wants to liberate it from his laptop and headphones. He already
has a good wireless router so I have recommended he try the Radio.
Knowing him, I have little doubt he will own at least two before too
long, and maybe even a Touch.

Interesting. Degaussing is the procedure used to remove magnetism
from an object. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degaussing

Many CRT monitors used to degauss on switch-on. A sort of loud
thrum noise and the screen image would wobble. You could initiate a
degauss from the menu.

I didn't know the Transporter had an issue with magnetism on the
control knob. It must be significant if it was thought to be worth
introducing a degaussing coil.

Aside from it maybe working on Friday evenings. ;-)

1. Dedicated iPhone, iPod Touch and Android applications that let you
browse music and create playlists over a wi-fi or cellphone
connection.

2. The ability to download playlists of tracks onto an iPhone, iPod
Touch or Android phone and play the music off line. I am not sure if
there is a limit to the number of tracks you can download. These are
DRM protected tracks, so you can only listen to them on the one device
- you cannot transfer or copy them. This makes the music totally
portable for the car or where you do not have cell-phone or wi-fi
connection. This is the Napster killer feature in my book.

3. Tracks are encoded at 320 kbps (IIRC Napster is 192).

4. A *Much* more user-friendly web interface (I have not tried the SB
app so cannot comment on that).

Er... thats it.

Napster gives you 5 included downloads for your £5. Spotify does not
have that, but then again you can play music off-line anyway so the
benefit is limited.

It is a technical issue. They need SqueezeOS to program the DRM rights
protection. SqueezeOS is only available on the Touch and Radio.

I know... I am in the same Duet boat as you! I even run my Server on
a NAS so cannot even use Triode's plugin. Apparently they are porting
the necessary libspotify application over to ARM based processors soon,
so I am hopeful that Triode will be able to do a version of his plugin

At the moment I am limited to using DSBridge - but it is better than

*Andyg:*
Offline may work, since it can't communicate to their server. But
multiple streaming sessions from different clients is not allowed. You
can stream multiple things using only Squeezeboxes though, as they make
an exception for that.

me Wrote:
Is there a limit to the number of SqueezeBox streams? In other words if
I had 4 Radios and 2 Touches could I stream different tracks to each
one on the same single £10 Premium account?

*Andyg:*
This should work. They might restrict if you tried to connect on the
same account from different locations (IP addresses), not sure, but
from the same household they are OK with it.

Back to me:
If true, this is a real bonus for those of us with many children.
Something for a beta tester to try out it would seem.

I have an iTouch, so I'm not sure about an Android phone, but it should
be similar.

I've just done this: streaming Spotify using the Spotify App on my SB
touch, and playing downloaded Spotify playlists on my iTouch in offline
mode.

The tracks are downloaded to your phone, and stored there, so if you
play them offline, Spotify have no means of knowing this.

If I stream Spotify on my SB Touch, and start the Spotify app on my
iTouch whilst it is online, then the streaming to my SB Touch stops and
a warning informs me that Spotify has been stopped because your account
is being used elsewhere.

So, theoretically, you can download 3,333 tracks and play these
offline, whilst streaming to your Touch/Radio.

Transporter-killers. They're maybe not worth the price but it would
be nice after all to see a new Transporter in the news...beating up
Naim and the others. But when it comes to Spotify, Naim's not there
 either ;-)
The thing about Naim is that they offer many complete high-end systems
at multiple price levels. They build CD players, streamers, integrated
amps, pre-amps, power amps, one-box systems, speakers, specialised
power supplies, dedicated interconnects etc etc.

With just a single high-end product, the Transporter, Logitech cannot
hope to compete in the same market.

A good market opportunity for Logitech would be to licence their
hardware / firmware for inclusion in a high-end system such as Naim.
This would not conflict with the Logitech products as the two don't
overlap at any price point. A Transporter replacement built by Naim
would be awesome! And probably four times the price ;)

Another possible solution is if it's possible to create a favorite for a

favorites for all your local artists and for all the Napster artists
you are interested in and get a common list of them under the Favorites
 menu.
Yes you can do this, I do it all the time. You can create a SqueezeBox
Favorite from a Napster artist or album. Click on the Favorite and it
gives you a list of the artist's albums on the Napster service.

I find it much quicker than negotiating Napster's own library
function. This does mean there is no entry in the Napster web interface
for that artist, but I almost never use Napster on the web anyway -
unless I am buying tracks with my allowance.

I tend to use this for artists I want to listen to, but do not have
ripped or downloaded music for already - and they tend to change over
time.
This week I be mainly listening to The Hold Steady...

I vote for better caching. I have thousands of artists, and I find it
annoying to have to wait 10+ seconds while the artist list is generated
on first use. My server is an overclocked quad core beast with lots of
ram and a Raid 10 disc subsystem. Wirless N network. Choosing all

A portrait view of some sort would be nice as well.

Hi,

I am using a Spotify client on my Nokia E72, my wife on a Nokia N8 and
I am running Triode's client on Squeezebox at home. However, only one
of them can run at a time. So, if I am playing music using Spotify on
Squeezebox - and then start the client on the phone - then the music
simply stops on Squeezebox. And the same the other way around.

Nice thing though is that if I sync the Squeezebox players in the
house, I have 2 Duets and one Radio, then they can all play Spotify at
the same time.

No, you're running the latest release - including the improvements made
a long time ago [in this area].

Are we positively sure this is the cause? Try putting your ear close to
the TP itself, and listen. As you say, hard to describe - but it should
be distinguishable mechanical.

If you're never heard it before now, its because you haven't noticed.
It will run the degaussing-procedure from time to time - e.g. always on
startup (but also at other times, I believe. Normally, it shouldn't do

Hi andyman99,
can you describe this in more detail?

If you select a single track the whole album is added?
This might be just an option in the Squeezebox-Server Settings Screen.
Go to Settings-Player-Basic Settings (in the web-interface of your
server) and look for the option Play Other Songs In Album.

Or is your problem that you erroneously created a playlist - but then
tap an album and the playlist gets cleared? Then you should have a look
into the settings-screen of SqueezePad for the 'playlist modification
mode'. Here you can change the behaviour when you tap on items.

If these two answers don't refer to your problem I did not understand
it yet from your description :)

Hi KMorgen,

thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts!
One question to understand your request a little bit better ... and
some further comments:

KMorgan;602274 Wrote:
 1. Readily available repeat/shuffle controls.
How often do you change these modes?
Right now I decided to leave those options in the settings menu to keep
a cleaner interface, because I thought they are not needed very often
for the majority of users.

KMorgan;602274 Wrote:

This might be difficult. When a stream is playing SqueezePad (to my
knowledge) is not able to determine the source. It just sees the
name/artist of the screen (which it renders already).
So right know I'm afraid this request cannot be implemented.

KMorgan;602274 Wrote:

This can be voted :) ... and I see that it gets more attention right
now in the poll.

 Hi,

maybe you should try a reset. Mine had the same behaviour, but after
the reset, the problem seems to be gone.

xlinx reset, not just a factory reset. forget the procedure, but search
this forum and you'll see how (something like remove power, hold down
1 button on remote and at the same time reapply power to the
transporter until the screen goes into reset mode.

very simple.

Re: [slim] Logitech Trade-In Program

The VFD on my white SB3 has started to... fade? in some parts of it -

Funny that my other SB3 and SB2 don't have that, nor does my boom.

I'm starting to have this issue on my 2 SB3's.

And I did recently email Logitech directly about ongoing support for
the Transporter. I was told that they could 'help to troubleshoot' but
that no repair service was offered (even for those willing to pay for it
out of warranty). For units still under warranty they would simply
replace the whole unit.
