[slim] Can't view track tags via SBS web interface

2011-06-13 Thread browellm

Drilling down into a song url to read the tags/metadata just gives me a
blank left hand pane since I upgraded to the release version of 7.5.4.

My iPeng and Squeezepad clients are both fine. They display the
information correctly when I look in the more info drilldown. I can
also read the extended information if I navigate to the same data via
the Custom Browse plugin.

I've tried both FF4 and IE9, same result. Any ideas folks?

2011-06-13 Thread oktup

I'd have to agree that the SB ecosystem isn't for *everyone*. But trying
to identify that cut-off point is a bit tricky.

One simple test might be if you never have problems attaching a file to
an email; ie you understand the concept of directory structures, and how
files end up in different places on your computer. If you totally get
this, and you're happy to do the occasional bit of googling when
computery things go wrong, I'd say a basic SB setup is well within your
capabilities.

Given that the OP mentions NASs and FLAC, I think he/she is comfortably
in the target demographic ;)

OTOH, mysterious intermittent networking problems could probably break
the spirit of Alan Turing himself. But I think it's a bit unfair to
single the SB out in this regard; it applies (almost) equally to all
home wifi, wireless printing, etc. Some (few?) people just seem to be
unlucky and get plagued with networking badness; if you've already
decided you want *some* type of streaming audio system, you're going to
be in the network lottery regardless, and I don't think the 'SB vs
something else' angle is massively relevant to your outcome. It'll
probably be fine ;)

Re: [slim] What The **** Do I Need?

2011-06-13 Thread toby10

I'd also add (especially if comparing Sonos to a Boom/Radio) the issue
of true portability.

Even though the Sonos S5 has it's own speakers it cannot be used as a
truly standalone portable player
- must be connected to a Sonos ZP or ZB (all SB players will connect
directly to any basic network, no base station needed)
- cannot communicate with standard WiFi (limited to the proprietary
Sonos mesh wireless)
- no display on Sonos players (yes there are the fine Apps, web UI,
dedicated Sonos Controller, but requiring these for basic functions
removes the portability factor, IMO)

Note: I have ZERO experience with Sonos, but I believe this is how
they work (and the inherent issues that accompany them). :)

Re: [slim] Anyone thought about AIRPLAY support in Squeezebox Server?

2011-06-13 Thread analographi

Just to clear everything up here.

1: ANY router can do Airplay between airplay capable devices (only
airport express can be used as an airport-analog-output-endpoint)

2: If squeezebox wants to support airplay, it can. Apple allows it.
Don't know how much it will cost logitech though.

3: Squeezeserver actually doesn't need to have anyhting to do with
airplay. Each squeezebox could be standalone an airplay device that
shows up as speakers for any airplay source like iphone, ipad etc.

4: Itunes actually doesn't need to be any part in this either. For
example: Wirless network with ANY router. iphone connected, squeezebox
connected (no server, no pc, no mac) IF the squeezebox was a true
airplay device the iphone could stream DIRECTLY to the squeezebox.

Bottom line: a firmware update could turn any squeezi into a true
airplay endpoint to which we could stream from iphones, ipods, ipads or
those who want itunes.

Personally I think if logitech doesn't do that they really risk
something. They can make the squeezebox a valid accessory for apple
devices and at the same time be what they are. For what is worth, I
will not buy another squeezi if they aren't going airplay. I will just
get an appletv and use it for audio only. I can put a death cheap
appletv in any room in the house and stream from my iphone to it
whenever and whereever I am. I'd love if the squeezi could do it, but
if they dont, its my last one.

A company does always good if they keep it compatible with as many
services as possible. Ignoring airplay would be a huge mistake.

Yet Apple does not have native FLAC support.

Within reason I agree more is better which in turn means more options
to the user and the market in general. But if licensing for every
possible closed source system out there (Apple, Zune, etc..) means
driving up the price of the players, then I say forget it.

It is rather comical, albeit sad also, the number of Apple and Zune
users who come to these and other forums related to streaming music
systems only to find out they are stuck with the hardware devices and
limitations of the format they have bought into. Obviously they are
seeking additional options, variety, features and choices to enjoy
their music on other platforms, only to find out such platforms are not
available too them based on restrictions set forth by their chosen
platform source (i.e. Apple, Zune).

Based on my experience, it's going to take time before we see anything
official from Logitech regarding this, it always tends to get
complicated as soon as business agreements are required.

While we wait, there is always the already working third party AirPlay
solution for Squeezebox:
http://blog.stuart.shelton.me/archives/762

It's a bit technical at the moment, but I'm sure it will improve pretty
fast as most other third party stuff tends to do around here.

fragile like a house of cards ?

if so, then why is it only slim gear that exhibits difficulties?

in other words, in my exp, i have seen the above, but only with slim,
not apple, not tivo, not other gear.

the very first problem i had almost instantly with slim, that still
isn't fully solved btw, (but after YEARS has improved to some degree,
including some bug / code fixes made at my urging) was listening to a
shoutcast stream. slim simply couldn't handle it, going into buffering
mode and so on. all the pro slimmers, some of which are here in this
thread i think (if not literally, than in spirit), wanted to first
blame my network, the environment, etc, and when i made clear it was
totally normal, and that i could always ROBUSTLY and RELIABLY stream
the same shoutcast on a wifi laptop with winamp, they actually resorted
to saying that it wasn't fair to compare the dinky ip3k slim solution
to that.

not fair? well, i couldn't disagree more. first of all, its sold to
people saying you can do that, without even needing a computer!
secondly, it IS supposed to be able to do that, anything said to the
contrary is nonsense.

my main beef is that in almost all cases when i have problems with slim
stuff that i report, even after years of using it, the reaction from
other users / devs, is to blame me, my setup, etc... and do everything
possible not to blame slim. the problem is that it almost ALWAYS IS
slim. and in my case, i feel that an even bigger problem is that none
of the devs live in windows, and so you run up against all kinds of
issues that seem to come from that. and once you prove it must be
slim, you're lucky if the devs actually do anything about it, which
granted it may not be easy or possible, but communiction on such issues
would be nice. i have real bugs that they know about that they refuse
to fix, one i can think of goes back to 2008.

having said all that, i am still using it, for now. but the
marketplace seems to be catching up to them. i am hopeful with some
things they are doing, like the DLNA, but the lack of resources and so
on is problematic, and waiting on 7.6 has become a joke. logitech
really needs to step up their game if they expect this stuff to
survive.

OK, on AirPlay Apple wants to cooperate and does so with a number of
companies.
The biggest hurdle I can see for a company who wants to use this is
that Apple doesn't require just a license or something but that you
also have to buy the chipset from their supplier. That can be a bummer.

Re: [slim] Anyone thought about AIRPLAY support in Squeezebox Server?

The biggest hurdle I can see for a company who wants to use this is that
Apple doesn't require just a license or something but that you also have
to buy the chipset from their supplier. That can be a bummer.
The gist I got from speaking indirectly to someone who's been doing
some development work on a similar thing is that Apple won't give you
the DRM keys if you license it - you have to take the chipset with it
already programmed.

If that is still the case despite the key now having been cracked then
it's going to make it a non-starter for any existing Squeezebox
products, so it could only possibly be for new products anyway.

I think the plug-in solution is the neatest idea anyway as it opens it
up to all of the product line.

[slim] Anyone tried both Android and iPeng? Which do you prefer, why?

2011-06-13 Thread Deaf Cat

Thinking of getting an ipod touch or a new android phone, not sure
which, just after your thoughts on sound quality and a remote control
app for my SB...

Was thinking of ipod touch, as I understand sound quality is pretty
good, and have seen ipeng briefly on utube which seems to work nicely
and quickly.

But, then again, getting a new android phone would mean easier
comunication with everything else...

Any thoughts much appreciated!
Cheers
DC

The iPod Touch is just damned expensive for what it is.

Small Android tablets are becoming increasingly affordable. The Barnes
Noble Nook Color looks nice, and they're easy to find on Craigslist
for under $200.

Compare like to like, iphone to droid phone or itouch/ipad to droid
tablet or various wifi-capable devices that aren't phones.

Droid and i-phones seem to me to be more similar than different in
basic operations. The Apple platform has been around longer and has had
a large customer base longer, so there are more apps. Droid devices are
outselling iphones now and the universe of available apps is growing
quickly. The Droid interface with gmail and other Google services has
been smoother and more capable than the same with Apple devices, in
case that matters to you.

I have experience with SB apps on both platforms and frankly they too
seem more similar than different. I can't say I prefer either.

If you need a phone, either will be the Swiss Army knife you're looking
for. If you don't need a phone but are looking for just a wifi remote
capability, I don't think the choice matters other than price.

Re: [slim] Sean and Dean - We Want You Back!

2011-06-13 Thread pablolie

Like any mass-vs-hobbist product there's not going to be one generic
product that covers every need. Just like integrated cameras in
smartphones aren't about to kill the high end camera market, integrated
player software or simplistic products are not going to end the niche
the SB products play in.

Is the SB something everybody should have in their home? No. But for
many of us with audiophile aspirations and that view their music as a
collection (and not a short term repository of current hits) the SB
concept has and will retain a lot of appeal because of its range and
flexibility.

Will it be a large enough market for Logitech? Not sure, but that's a
different question, and I am sure the market is large enough to attract
someone's attention and cater to the SB installed base no matter what.

The below is pure speculation and not based on any facts.

I think the problem is that Logitech currently doesn't seem to know
which users they like to target:
- It's pretty clear they aren't targeting the geeks/audiophiles anymore
because most of the advanced features aren't prioritized
- It's also pretty clear that they aren't targeting the mass market
because they don't dare to upset the current customer base and simplify
the devices for the mass market.

It's also pretty clear they try to spend as few resources as possible
on Squeezebox development at the moment, which probably also is one of
the reasons why we don't see any move in any of the directions since
either direction would require development resources.

If they like to target the niche market, I believe it would require a
smaller company to run the business, something similar to Sonos or Slim
Devices. Possibly it could also work if there were a dedicated unit
within a big company like Logitech that executed the development and
business. However, as soon as upper management cares, it's going to
fail within a big company because it's too small compared to everything
else they are doing. It's always going to be easier to produce and sell
mices, at least as long as mices haven't been completely replaced with
touchpad devices and touch screens.

So in my mind, targeting the mass market is the only solution for
Logitech, the question is just if they dare to make the decisions
required to re-target the products this way. It's certainly going to
hurt their existing customer base which have a lot higher percentage of
geeks and audiophiles than most mass market products.

If they really decide to re-target towards mass market it could mean
things like:
- Drop SqueezeOS as platform and use a standard framework like Android
or something else similar.
- Drop local computer based server (SBS) and only focus on
mysqueezebox.com and to listen to local music you would have to connect
a USB drive directly to one of the Squeezebox devices. The result of
this could, but doesn't have to, mean dropped support for third party
plugins and instead possibly focus on supporting third party applets
running directly on the device.
- Drop web interface support, the devices have to be controlled via a
iOS/Android device or IR remote
- Drop support for advanced configuration options
- Drop focus on audio quality, it needs to be good enough but it
doesn't have to be state of the art.

The result would be similar to the Squeezebox Touch with a local hard
drive. In the mass market it got to be easy, plug in the device and
connect the external USB drive with music and start playing, no
installation or configuration on a computer what so ever. It would of
course require the Touch to actually work with most of the USB drives
out there and also work reliably without an external server.

It of course doesn't make much sense to do the above changes on
existing products, so what we are seeing now is probably Logitech
trying to get as much as possible out of existing customers and still
spend as little resources as possible on maintenance, support and
marketing. Just putting the existing products on the shelf in the
stores is going to sell some devices, even with minimal
maintenance/support, so it's worth for them to milk existing customers
a bit more.

If Logitech wants to continue in the audio streaming business but move
towards mass market, we are probably going to see something completely
new. It might be called Squeezebox, to re-use the brand, but it's
probably not going to be particular similar to the Squeezebox devices
we have seen so far. It's going to have less focus on audio quality and
customization possibilities and more focus on simplicity and price.
Possibly based on similar platform and hardware as Logitech Revue,
possibly developed by completely different resources than the current
Squeezebox team who is tied too much to this geek community and don't
want to upset us.

However, once again, this is just speculation and I'm probably
completely wrong about all this.

As long as Logitech has understand the advantage of supporting third
