Re: [slim] So, what exactly is the future of streaming audio going to be?
I did buy a Escient Fireball for around EUR 1700,- Then considered a "pro" solution. I've owned it for 6 months, but I was never really happy with it. Many , many problems... Not convinced by its audio quality either. Then I bought I a Squeezebox Duet (EUR 299,-)(Because I didn't want to buy a expensive sytem that didn't work again, i.e. Sonos. Not because Sonos doesn't work, but I didn't want to take the risk again) Since the Squeezebox Duet I've been a happy streaming audio user. I think the audio quality is better than the Escient. If you take a look at my signature, you can see I'm convinced by the quality and possibilties of the Squeezbox system. If only Logitech would release some new devices and emphasized multiroom audio possibilties in their marketing. -- verypsb 1x Boom, 1x Classic, 2x Controller, 2x Receiver, 1x Touch Please vote for bug 17207: Artwork scanning fails when a clear & rescan has been initiated. http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17207 Please vote for bug 17205: Artists with accented characters not correctly sorted in pagebar. http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17205 verypsb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17295 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89332 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] So, what exactly is the future of streaming audio going to be?
Don't forget these guys: http://www.olive.us/ And that's the issue, I think--any of these dedicated audio devices are for people who are serious about music. Squeezebox is quite frankly at the bottom of the market for price (although I think sound quality is much better than that), Sonos is not far behind, and then you shoot up into the $1000 and up devices from Soolos, Olive, Bang&Olufsen, etc. Everyone else who doesn't give a crap how their music sounds is either listening on their crappy laptop speakers, or running a DLNA system through their TV or maybe Blu-Ray player through a $300 home theatre sound system. Another option is integrated network audio with AV receivers like the Denons. They do uPNP but can play back FLAC. And of course they all do AirPlay as well. I'm not sure how Squeezebox exists in the marketplace long term except as a niche player, and I don't know if Logitech wants to operate them like that. I'm not sure where Slim Devices would be if they hadn't sold. Sonos has a defining characteristic with their mesh networking and variety of devices. Logitech should have that too with the different Squeezeboxes, but the complications of the server side are a barrier for some. -- mrfantasy --Mike http://last.fm/user/mrfantasy mrfantasy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89332 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

For transport of music as with most things, there's no one solution to meet all needs. My SB assemblage (now consisting of 2 SB3s, a Boom, and a Touch) has been rock-solid and trouble free for years. It would have the shape of a traditional audio device, use wall current without a wall-wart, have a display like the Touch (but perhaps not touch sensitive) and be silent. The remote would be like the Touch remote to control things. The additional space in the device would support a more powerful processor and a small SSD for the software and the library. The library would be on one (or more) external USB3 drive. The device could either contain a DAC or connect to a DAC. The processor should be capable of rebuilding a library of 20,000 tracks within 15 minutes. So, it could be used as a regular part of an audio system. Perhaps the server software would still be used with a computer to build the contents of the external hard drive. This would be how tagging gets corrected etc, so you would know that the library was CLEAN before it was attached to the device. So, Logitech already has everything they need to build and sell this. They could sell this as a entry item as decribed, or a high end item by adding a second SSD internally for the library. Its wired / wireless network connectivity would be used to refresh software and provide streaming radio access to the Internet. Re: [slim] The 7.6.x lingering issues thread
Found something in the Advanced menu mentioning an update for SBS Server on mysqueezebox.com, so downloaded it. When it restarted it prompted me with a message saying that a new download was available (the same one)! So I let it carry on and download it again and when it restarted for a second time I chose 'Favourites'. Couldn't find them so it then switched to mysqueezebox.com (hooray!) and appeared to connect although some of the icons were grey squares. Something's gone wrong though as it just says 'can't connect - failed to parse' if I try to go to Favourites. The whole thing is behaving as thought it's FUBARed. Why can't we have the ability to just be able to do all this from the Squeezebox itself and not have to keep switching libraries? I wonder if the fact that it sees different things depending on whether it's using the LAN or the WAN has confused it by downloading updates multiple times and it has now screwed something up? Next time I'm going to wait until the Squeezebox prompts me for an update. Re: [slim] The 7.6.x lingering issues thread
Aaaagh! I've been trying to sort out a new problem this evening, in that on some streams the '+' (More Info) button wasn't working ('Couldn't connect to a non http address' error or something like that). So I updated to the new nightly build and downloaded it onto the Mac. The Squeezebox didn't see the update as it was pointing to mysqueezebox.com. So I switched libraries to the Mac and it detected a new download of SBS (still labelled 7.6.0 followed by a build no - possibly the same one it was already using on mysqueezebox.com). It all works beautifully when using the Mac LAN but can I get get it back to point to mysqueezebox.com? Can I hell! If I choose 'Favourites' or 'My Music' when the Mac is asleep it still tries to connect to the LAN. It then prompts me to either try again or switch libraries. If I choose the latter it tries to connect to the LAN again! So I can now only use the Squeezebox when the computer is awake, although it will continue to play any internet streams that are running. Not very helpful. I'm sure in the past it switched over to mysqueezebox.com. Any ideas on how to get it pointing back there so I can run it independently of the Mac again? Re: [slim] Performance of SQLite and large databases
Here are the results of the first test with a 260,000 file library. The Flac files are all 10 seconds of silence, then tagged exactly as my real Flac library. What I did to generate the library was to duplicate the albums in my 32.7k file library multiple times, changing the album and folder name each time by appending a number 01, 02, etc. All of the tagging is identical otherwise. Covers were also copied to the library's folders. These times were from the initial scans launched by starting up the server with an empty cache folder and (in the case of MySQL) an empty database. Both scans probably benefited from system caching, since I ran them soon after generating the library itself. I ran the MySQL scan first, so the SQLite scan, if anything, would have benefited more from caching. Instead of giving total scan time, I'll list the time it took for the 'Discovering Files' pass and the 'Scanning new files' pass at 1/4, 1/2 and all the way through the library. This is mostly because the MySQL scan must be aborted during the precaching of artwork, so a total time can't be had, but it also shows how both slow down as the library database grows, but SQLite it much more affected. Code: MySQL Discovering files 1:59 Scanning new @ 65k files5:40 Scanning new @ 130k files 12:17 Scanning new @ 260k files 26:12 SQLite Discovering files 1:40 Scanning new @ 65k files9:08 Scanning new @ 130k files 26:49 Scanning new @ 260k files1:12:17 Second run, this time running full scans from the Basic Settings page in the web ui. Similar results. Code: MySQL Scanning new @ 260k files 27:11 SQLite Scanning new @ 260k files1:15:41 I should note that the above results do not jive with what I see when scanning my 32.7k file library, where SQLite is faster. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89391 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I don't install beta versions of Squeezecenter* but I do install released versions just to maintain support. Every time I install one something or other seems to go wrong. (*I made an exception with 5.6.1 after looking at the posts on here.) The only thing that has stopped me jumping ship is that wireless in this house, even with repeaters, is horrible. I'm sitting here looking once again at the Squeezebox displaying the track information for the song it just played rather than the one it's currently playing. Moose is displaying the same incorrect information. Reinstalling Squeezebox Server, rescanning, rebooting have made no difference, the display is off in a few hours. I think I'm finally going to give Sonos a try as I'm sick of battling with Squeezebox, I want something that just works. I also did some test with a generated library with same size as my normal FLAC library with 3500 tracks and the result were: - Real library (91 GB): full rescan 92 seconds - flactruncate.pl library (31 MB): full rescan 32 seconds - My random generated flac library (15 MB): full rescan 25 seconds So the scanning time is greatly affected by the file size. If the FLAC file size results in a linear performance loss related to library size, it would mean that a 50 000 FLAC library would take about 25-40 minutes in my setup. I'm not sure if JJZolx is using a generated library with full size FLAC files or if it's a library with small FLAC files. One thing that should be mentioned is that my generated library doesn't have any album covers, so if the performance is somehow related to artwork handling that won't be seen in my tests, at least not until I've added album covers to the test library. If there is an interest, I'll try to run some more tests in my environment with different library sizes. However, I can't run realistic tests of scanning performance because of limited disc space to store full size FLAC files, but I can run tests to compare SQLite/MySQL with small FLAC files or to compare browsing performance which should be independent of FLAC file size. The only issue is that I only have a virtual environment, so it's not going to be 100% accurate and comparable with a real environment. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland).
