Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
I've retired my Tomato-ed WRT54GL recently - it wouldn't handle my 50mbps internet link. After some research I realized its the time to stop using consumer crap, and I switched to pro- wired router, which happens to be incredibly powerful, feature-rich, and yet very inexpensive. Re: [slim] Will There Be a SB4?
It wouldn't be impossible, but a chance that the qualities important for tiny audiophile market would be simply forgotten and lost, is too high. For such a large company as Logitech mass-market product will be much more interesting and profitable. So if they mix "high" and "low" too much SB may get out of the picture. Re: "that's what Slim is doing *already*". Well, they don't. I never said that it's the price what determines product as audiophile or not. It's all about engineering quality and attention to details. Mass market stuff just don't normally get that, this is why it doesn't normally qualify. True, especially if you have spare time and some spare hardware in the closet. Many don't have not first not the second. I'd doubt I can find enough time to learn ClarkConnect administration. First thing I said when saw Transportes was: "Kudos to Slim Devices". On the other hand, $2K tag presumes certain level of refinement, not just a bunch of features. When I was buying my $3.5K CD player from SimAudio, I read everything I could about their design approach - and refinement was the keyword there. Slim Devices web site offers description suitable for under $500 device - nice statements without any explanation why/how, so while they perhaps correct, they look as pure marketing with no real meat behind. When SD entered multi-thousands territory, they should realize that many of the potential buyers will look very closely and thoroughly on what's behind all those marketing assertions, and lack of meaningful information may play critical role in acception the product. -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25810 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm pretty sure SD people got ready for complaints regarding the direction their design is heading - there is no high fidelity device on earth that wouldn't produce at least some negative comments. No, that's the point - it seems to be significantly better then any other NAS. I'm not talking about DIY PC with Gb, RAID, and bunch of HDDs. This is a commercially available device, a little expensive, and if what they talk about it is true - it's first I would really consider to buy. BTW - the only serious drawback of ReadyNAS I was thoroughly looking at, was its slowness... -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25784 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Thecus N5200 - fastest NAS available
So, what do you guys think about Thecus N5200? Review say it blows everything around out of the water performance wise. Can it be made running SlimServer? -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25784 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: New Slim Devices Product? "The Transporter" per 6moons.com??
Very good. When is it going to be reviewed by Stereophile? :) I'm starting saving money... no ice cream for me anymore... Interesting, if I'd connect it and SB3 to the same outboard DAC, how much difference in SQ should I expect? Beyond the new features, how different the digital section in them? -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25771 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Ok, I'm convinced now. :) This device aimed at few quite different consumer groups. Most of "Audiophile" group tend to abandon the analog part of SB, because too many have high quality outboard DACs. So for this group quality of SB's digital chain is substantially more important, and this is where I'd suggest to invest R&D resources. Just do whatever budget allows to reduce jitter: better clock, better RF/EMI isolation, etc. -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24400 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

My point is that although i2s doesn't resolve the whole jitter issue, it's still does substantially better job then SPDIF. For some reason word clock link gathers too little attention from hi-end consumer audio world, and i2s is really "in fashion" these days. Which, in turn, makes better chances there will be more DACs that can accept such a input in the foreseeable future. Another note is that if my understanding is correct, Squeezebox is "i2s-ready", i.e. implementation of i2s output in Squeezebox doesn't require architectural changes, unlike implementation of optional word clock link. So, considering all the above, its better to have something then nothing. -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24400 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB4 and/or a high-end model, when?
I2S output as an alternative to SPDIF!!! This is not a big deal technically, but would allow to pretty much eliminate jitter associated with SPDIF design flaws. At this very moment there are just few DAC boxes that can receive I2S, but it's gaining moment tremendously. -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24400 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
