The plugin will then report to iPeng that it's accepting volume changes even though the actual volume is fixed to 100%. Which plugin are you using to control your amp? Thanks for responding. I use the Touch, will the plugin work with it. Also I have fixed the volume at 100% on the Touch using a plugin (can't remember which) since this feature is not there on Squeezeserver for the Touch. I mean, after all the volume is fixed, the only reason I'm aware of for still wanting volume changes is that you have a plugin that interprets them to control an amp while the SB's volume stays fixed. There are three of these I'm aware of (and that work with iPeng), two for Denon amps that directly control the volume (so you keep the slider) and then there's IRBlaster which captures up/down changes and sends them to the amplifier. iPeng will NOT manipulate the volume value for a SB that is set to fixed volume because this would confuse the group volume control and there is little sense in it anyway. Yet I am NOT sure whether this also applies to the Touch if the fixed volume is being set by a plugin, I don't know how that mechanism works. OK, let me clarify. Today I am have my Touch volume fixed to 100% and I control the amp with the amp remote. What I would like to be abel to do is fix the digital out volume of the Touch to 100% and have the IR emitter connected to the Touch blast the volume up or volume down signals for the amp volume when the volume is changed on the iPeng iPad. I though this was what the IRBlaster plugin did, no? Thanks all for your comments. TO make things even more complicated the new Touch will be released soon. Reading elsewhere on this forum, it seemd to have better digital out then the Duet. So if I do go the DAC route (seems likely), then I might replace the duet with the Touch. The touch interface will also help as a secondary control, the primary will be iPeng. Re: [slim] Transporter Vs Naim DAC with Duet
bhaagensen;508887 Wrote: You value sound-quality, hence choose the alternative with the best (for you) price/performance ratio, the Touch. That't not complicated :) Or if you want the very best from the two worlds, keep your TP as a digital source if funds allow. Both makes much sense to me. There is another aspect which seems to escape many. As you said, many seem to be of the opinion that the CDX2-2 is a better sounding transport than say a CD5XS. Fine. Suppose you accept that. Its at a truly high cost, but still... At the same time many (the same?) including Naim officially I think, argue that the HDX sounds better because it provides better data reading (rips) as it doesn't have to be done under the same almost-realtime restrictions as a cd-transport. For all intents and purposes I don't think the HDX does much else than EAC or dpPoweramp. Hence by using the Squeezebox as a transport you would get better source material to start with. Whether this would make up for whatever the CDX2-2 could improve on the transport side I have no idea, but this must be accounted for if you want to follow these arguments. It does make it clear that there is no clear winner, even by these kinds of arguments. Anyway, we need to try for ourselves I think. Keeping the Transporter would be an option if there is a 'big' difference between the Touch and the Transporter. But it there is not, I would prefer to reduce the number of full size units on my HiFi rack and just use the Touch. It is small enough to be tucked away on the side somewhere or even kept on the DAC and used as a secondary control. The colou screen would be much better then the Transporter's. As for CD's for Transport, I prefer to move away from a CD player. Simply because I find that when I have the squeezebox connected to the Naim system I tend to listern more and more to the streamed music just becuase it is convinient and can't be bothered to go and find the CD from upstairs and place it in the CD player to play it even though the CDX2 sounds better then the streamed music. And becasue I have a CD player, I have not ripped all the CDs knowing that I can always play them on the CD player which is better sounding. By removing the CD player and having the DAC I will have a streamed music that is better sounding then the CDX2. This will be the incentive to rip all the CDs and then have them available at a flick of the iPhone :) ASenna02 -- ASenna04 ASenna04's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2696 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74249 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Obviously being in the world of hi-fi and audiophiles, this is met with... lets say some skepticism. Anyway, as long as I haven't heard the DAC myself I can't really argue that some claims audible differences between transports. If however it turns out to be in line with my own observation, I'm really eager to investigate how this can happen. The Naim DAC is, I would say, by design rather than by clever algorithms jitter free (as far as spdif introduced jitter goes) given reasonable assumptions. bhaagensen, You make important points here. If the DAC does indeed render all reasonable quality digital sources equal, then why would Naim market to sell it with the new CDX2-2 (with S/PDIF) when a CD5XS would be sufficient?
