RE: [slim] Re: Announce: SlimServer 6.2b2

2005-10-19 Thread Arthur Cheng
With the support of Unicode. Does that mean it support Chinese display?
DO I still need to download the 3 fonts as indicated from previous
thread before?

The reason I asked is beause I use Infrant NAS which natively support
slimserver, but I cannot install the fonts directly on to NAS.

Yes - provided it is lossy WMA, and not lossless WMA.

Is WMA Lossless still transcoded on the server?

It is.

And if so, how does SlimServer know whether it's lossless or lossy?

The WMA metadata has a flag denoting lossless.

RE: [slim] Re: SlimServer on ReadyNAS600

2005-08-09 Thread Arthur Cheng
I have exactly the same setting. There is no problem with two slimserver
running at the same time. All you need is setup your SB2 to the
slimserver you want. Just pull out the power and reconnect the SB2 and
it will look for the slimserver again. You can choose manual setup then.
You can also use computer control. Just type the ipaddress:9000 and you
will find the slimserver on that ipaddress.

Hope this helps!

Infrant
installation of SlimServer are that you can't load any plugins that
Infrant doesn't include in the installation, you have no direct access
to the SlimServer installation files, and you can't do nightly or SVN
updates. Infrant didn't even install all of the standard skins on
their first release of 6.0. They've recently released 6.1 and 6.1.1
and they're listening to customers for feedback, so later releases may
 be a bit more flexible.

Another reservation I have about running SlimServer on these
appliances
is that they have limited CPU horsepower. They may be acceptable
speed-wise (and I suspect the ReadyNAS is more powerful than the other
devices that can run SlimServer) but it remains to be seen how they'll
perform with very large libraries. For me I think it'll be worth
investing $500-$800 for a dedicated box to run SlimServer, plus maybe
 some other server based stuff.

hi JJ,

thanks for this helpful info! in my case, it's not a problem if no
other plugins are available - i use slimserver right out of the box,
with the default skin. and, not having access to the slimserver files
is similarly no sweat. as long as it plays music, that's really all i
care about. :)

i was wondering if you know about the database functions of slimserver.
it must be that some type of database software either lives on the
ReadyNAS, or is part of infrant's image. else, how could you add new
music to your library? :) do you know how this database function is
handled?

and lastly, do you know what would happen if my pc was turned on, and
now there are two copies of slimserver running simultaneously?
naturally, i could turn off the automatic loading of slimserver when
linux boots up, but it might be nice to have access to it
occassionally. would the whole system get confused if two
slimservers were running?

thanks in advance for your guidance! i appreciate learning as much as
i can about this great, new technology and what you can do with it ...

kind regards,

The Roku box is driven directly from iTunes; there is no need to export
playlists etc. In fact, the Roku site doesn't even really mention any
server software of their own. They also claim to be able to play
FLAC files, but you have to download SlimServer software - which also
works with Roku.

To me, there is no question that the Squeezebox is a superior device,
or that SlimServer has capabilities well beyond iTunes. But at the end
of the day, the best UI (and marketing) wins. Imagine the possiblities
if we had the best box, the best server software, AND a killer UI that
could play something besides MP3...

It's not too early to think about market dominance. Of course, Roku
isn't the threat. Microsoft is. But as Intuit demonstrated with
personal finance software, if you're early and build it for the masses,
you can win big.

NAS itself just means Network Attached Storage. So basically a hard disk
on the network for everyone to access and share.

The ReadyNAS is 'cool' because it is also a hardward based RAID5.
meaning, you get data redundancy. In a 4 disk RAID5 config, you have
have up to 2 disks died on you without losing a single file. and you
can then hot swap hdd (bad ones) out and replace them with good hdd of
the same capacity. the RAID will rebuild itself for full protection.

Imagine losing 400GB of music... ouch...

Infrant Tech (www.infrant.com)'s ReadyNAS600 (perform much better then
the Buffalo one) will support SlimServer around mid July!

It's interesting, but the Live Search feature now makes
Slimserver nearly as responsive (if not quite a smooth) as an
app. I've been using it more and more. If it were combined with
a 3-pane display like iTunes or Winamp (which ripped off the
iTunes interface for its media library), and if support for smart
(dynamic, based on a DB query) playlists were added, I don't think
you could say that anything else was easier to use at that point.

Seeing as how WinAmp has been owned by Apple for over 5 years now,
it's not surprising the interface looks a little bit like iTunes. Or
 vice versa.

Has anybody plan to make such a plug-in for MCE, or any ideas of how to
accomplish what I what?

Subject: [slim] Squeezebox2

Hi everyone,

Lots of folks noticed that we were running low on inventory, spending
less time here, and working our butts off on SlimServer 6. As
suspected, there is a new product. Squeezebox2 is in full production
now, and the first units will ship on March 31.

Squeezebox2 addresses all of the top performance and functionality
requests that come up here every day.

802.11g/WPA: for better range, compatibility, security, and throughput
FLAC: for reduced bandwidth usage
More memory: for better streaming of PCM audio over wireless

I'm just getting started... don't worry, I'll get to the pony. :)

Although I don't often contribute to the audiophile discussions, I
really do enjoy reading them. Regardless of who can hear what, the fact
is that there are indeed some real measurable characteristics such as
output levels, THD+N, and clock precision where we had room for
significant improvement. Squeezebox2 has completely done away with all
the limitations - we're now doing all of the audio decoding and DSP
work in software, and this gave me the freedom to design the digital
outputs and analog stages exactly the way I wanted them. Please see the
FAQ and the hardware specs page for details on the new design.

Among other things, the new design has allowed us to implement cross
fading and some very impressive visualizers. Of course, having it all
done in software (on an extremely fast processor) leaves the door open
for more functionality down the road.

Now some people have pooh-poohed the idea of visualizers as just being
eye candy, but personally I think a high resolution, ultra-fast
spectrum analyzer is quite a thing to behold. We've got one now - full
screen, 64 bands, 30 frames per second, and perfectly synced with the
audio. There are a few visualizers to choose from, including a smaller
spectrum analyzer and analog VU meters.

Squeezebox2 also has a new vacuum fluorescent display - we had it
custom designed by Noritake specifically to support the ideas we had in
mind for new fonts, animations, and visualizers. The display is
slightly larger physically, and has more than twice the resolution at
320x32 pixels. It has multiple brightness levels of course, but it also
has grayscale capability, which we use for the visualizers and
graphics.

A few bonus features that you might not have expected:

Dual antennas: Squeezebox2 has both an internal AND an external
antenna. The 802.11g radio takes advantage of this configuration to
automatically select the best antenna for transmit/receive, optimizing
signal strength and vastly improving range/throughput.

Bridging: yes, Squeezebox2 can share its wireless connection with a
wired ethernet device connected through its (100Mbps) ethernet port.
This allows other devices in the home theatre, such as Xboxen,
Playstations, Tivos, or HTPCs to connect wirelessly to your access
point.

Pony: there is a discount code, FREEPONY. Enter this on the order
page to get $20 off on either the wired or the wireless model.

Finally, a big thank you goes to every one of our customers and
especially the people on this list. Thank you for promoting the
product, helping us improve it, and suggesting ideas.

The new web site is up now: http://www.slimdevices.com
