Re: [slim] iTunes alternatives

2008-02-16 Thread Lorrin

Sorry for the late follow-up. I did eventually resolve my iTunes library
rebuilds. I don't understand what was going on. It seems to have been
issue with confused resource forks on the file server (an
Infrant/Netgear ReadyNAS) on which I store my iTunes library. Some
combination of carefully deleting all the hidden files containing the
resource forks and temporarily connecting via SMB/CIFS instead of
AppleShare did the trick. (I prefer AppleShare since it seems to more
gracefully handle my machine going in and of sleep.)

[slim] Missing accented files: iTunes and composed vs decomposed unicode

2008-02-16 Thread Lorrin

Files with accents in their names aren't showing up in my SlimServer
library. This is an iTunes interaction problem.

For example, I see this in the log file:
2008-02-16 22:23:51.7372 iTunes: file not found:
/Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Wir Sind Helden/Soundso/04
Fu#776;r Nichts Garantieren.mp3

The corresponding entry in my iTunes Music Library.xml is this:
keyLocation/keystringfile://localhost/Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Wir%20Sind%20Helden/Soundso/04%20Fu%CC%88r%20Nichts%20Garantieren.mp3/string

Note the u%CC%88: that's a u-umlaut created with a u followed by a
Combining Diaeresis (dialytika).

If I browse to the file in Firefox, the URL I end up with this:
file:///Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Wir%20Sind%20Helden/Soundso/04%20F%C3%BCr%20Nichts%20Garantieren.mp3

Note it uses %C3%BC to get the u-umlaut directly.

It seems like somewhere along the way there's a failure to recognize
that the decomposed Unicode path in the iTunes Music Library.xml is
equivalent to the composed Unicode that is the name of the file on
disk.

My SlimServer setup involves three machines: a Mac that runs iTunes, a
file server (Infrant/NetGear ReadyNAS) that stores the music library,
and an Ubuntu machine that runs SlimServer. The Mac accesses the NAS
via AppleShare and the Ubuntu machine accesses it via NFS.

SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Debian - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.45-Debian_1ubuntu3.1

Thanks for any help...
-Lorrin

Re: [slim] Missing accented files: iTunes and composed vs decomposed unicode

2008-02-16 Thread Lorrin

hmm.. I should have been more specific. If I browse to the file in
Firefox on the Ubuntu machine, the URL contains %C3%BC. But if I do on
the Mac, the URL contains u%CC%88. This implies the NAS is exposing one
file name to the Mac and another one to the Ubuntu machine. Seems like
the fix needs to be there, rather than in SlimServer. Advice welcome...

[slim] iTunes alternatives

2007-10-07 Thread Lorrin

I'm currently using iTunes. Virtually every time I restart iTunes it
decides my library is corrupt and churns for hours rebuilding it from
the XML file. Argh! I'd love to use a different library system. Can
anything else do what I do with iTunes?

* dynamic smart playlists based on ratings and genre and listening
stats
* syncs to a portable player. Portable player can input ratings to the
system.
* SlimServer can read the dynamic playlists
* podcast support

Bonus points for bi-directional interaction with SlimServer so that
Squeezebox ratings/playback feeds back in to the system.

Thanks!

[slim] Linux / iTunes / Mac using central library

2006-02-11 Thread Lorrin

I'm having difficulty getting SlimServer and iTunes to share a music
library.

I've got a Debian Linux box with SlimServer running on it and some
shared disk space.

I've got iTunes running on my iBook. The remote linux volume is mounted
and I've told iTunes to use it as the iTunes music folder location.

All my music is thus in a location where both SlimServer and iTunes can
get at it. However, iTunes is still keeping the library metadata
(/Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
and /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml)
locally on the iBook. I've seen folks mention using TweakUI / registry
edits on Windows to trick iTunes into placing not just the music but
also the library files themselves on a remote volume. But how do I do
it on OS X?

I suppose an work-around would be to set up a cron job to periodically
copy the iTunes Music Library.xml from the iBook to the Linux box --
but then it'll never have the ability to make use of (future?)
SlimServer features/plug-ins that push e.g. ratings/play
counts/playlists back out to iTunes.

Am I asking for too much? I thought I'd get to worry about multiple
iBooks and disconnected operation before running to a wall! :-)
