[slim] Anyone need at least 1 or maybe 2 SB3s? (NorCal Preferred)
I've got at least 1 if not 2 SB3s around here. They worked the last time I tried them. One brand new remote in packaging. I'd hate to throw them into my e-waste box. In a perfect world if there's someone near-ish to San Jose who wants to arrange a pickup that'd be cool. I can update later when I've figured out what all I have. Re: [slim] Multiple copies of the same song, and other library issues.
The other issue I see with not using iTunes to manage things is having to manually rename files and such. So right now what happens is that I get an MP3 from somewhere, like Amazon. I just import it into iTunes. iTunes does the right thing - it puts it in a consistent directory structure and renames the file to a consistent name (with everything else). I get the tags and stuff right in iTunes and I don't have to move the files around. If anyone has good Mac-based library management tools as an alternative to iTunes I'm happy to play with them. -- Meatwad650 Meatwad650's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9725 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50791 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Multiple copies of the same song, and other library issues.
I've got some library management issues, and maybe folks can help: What's the best way of having multiple copies of the same song around? Here's the scenario: I've got multiple copies of files around. For example, I ripped a CD in FLAC and then transcoded to MP3 for the iPod. But not all my MP3s are available in FLAC. So I would love to have a way to be able to tell SC Hey, look in /FLAC *and* look in /MP3. But if you find the same song/album/whatever in both places then don't bother with the one in /MP3. Now even if SC could do this I'd have another problem: I've got SC right now using my iTunes library. (I know I could rip to Apple Lossless, but I don't want to for a few reasons, one being that my Denon AVR can't play it, but it can play FLAC.) This is great with smart playlists and the like. However, obviously to do the above I'd need to not do that anymore and just scan through all my music...but I like my iTunes playlists. Can I just keep them? If anyone is in a similar dilemma and has advice, let me know. -- Meatwad650 Meatwad650's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9725 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50791 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Multiple copies of the same song, and other library issues.
The problem with that method is that now I guess I can't use iTunes to keep the folders organized anymore. And that kind of sucks. And then I have to go and sort all this out...what a mess. And of course I will no longer be able to use iTunes to create things like Smart Playlists that I can use in SC, which also sucks. It's either gonna be a really complicated script or, ideally, I should be able to tell SC to prefer one format over another. -- Meatwad650 Meatwad650's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9725 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50791 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet
Wow - shiny. I love shiny. Pretty always works - and the controller looks very pretty. However, I have (for the most part) outgrown the phase where pretty outweighs functional. For example, if my Treo died tomorrow (it's 3 years old) I might get an iPhone. But I won't pay for the iPhone upgrade while my Treo still works because while the iPhone is the sexiest hardware I've seen in a while there are several key functions (push IMAP, GPS nav, eReader) that it won't do. So how does this apply to the Duet? Well, I won't be upgrading my setup. I probably won't get the controller because it doesn't really add any functionality. If I had to add music in another room I would have to decide if getting the controller was worth not having the cool VFD display of an SB3. The thing is - I only have 3 rooms. :) I'm never in the office without the computer, so I don't need a DAP in there. Got the SB3 in the bedroom. In the family room I have the HTPC or even the Xbox if I want to stream music. I suppose an SB3 or an SBR would mean I could change tracks without having the TV on but that luxury isn't worth $300 of $400 to me - yet. I get the feeling it's not really marketed at *us*, the SlimDevices faithful. Oh, many of us will buy it because they can think of a use for a headless SB3 (as some are looking at the receiver), but it doesn't have the same appear as an SB3, as I see it. The SD faithful are audiophile/hacker types who enjoy coming up with our own solutions for things. This just doesn't have the same feel to me - but that's cool. While I can make my SB3 do some cool stuff, it does come off a bit nerdy. I love it (I'm a sucker for a VFD) - others may not. This device is clearly a shot at Sonos. It's got the same basic parts, priced significantly cheaper - for those complaining about the cost just look at what Sonos is like. Now, also think if you were starting from scratch and needed to do multi-room. At 2 rooms you save $50 (2x SB3 vs Duet + 2nd SBR). Each additional room you save $150. The only problem with this is that most people who have enough rooms to need this usually don't live alone - and only having one controller could be a problem. So if you're just looking at the controller as a cool remote for your SB3 it's not going to make sense. It's a bummer, since I think it looks very pretty. But if someone came to me tomorrow and asked me if I liked Sonos or if they wanted to do multi-room music I'd point them at the Duet without hesitation I love my SB3, I think the world of SlimServer, and so that makes me pretty confident this product is going to be the best in it's market. -- Meatwad650 Meatwad650's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9725 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Ports 1900 and/or 9335
I'm pretty sure that slimserver doesn't use port 9335, but can anyone suggest what port 1900 would be for? I was trying to run Connect360, a program to stream audio and video to my Xbox360, on my Mac at the same time as I was running slimserver. It complained that one of the two ports was in use and sure enough I found a perl process talking to 1900 but I couldn't find any documentation about what slimserver would need port 1900 for. I tried stopping slimserver, starting Connect360 - that worked. Then I started slimserver and it started without complaint and my sb3 seems to work normally. So is there some reason slimserver needs port 1900 open? Here's a feature that would be cool for me. Support the ability to assign a score to a file format or somehow weight it so that I can state a preference. So I went to make sure that the network connection wasn't causing the hum. Then I unplugged the power and noticed something. Unplugging the power adapter from the squeezebox didn't make the hum go away. In fact, if I held the plug end (that goes into the SB3) it would make the hum louder. The only thing that made the hum go away was unplugging the power supply at the power strip. I'd think that points to the power supply pretty well, wouldn't it? My setup is so simple that I'm not sure what I can do to get rid of this hum. I've got my SB3 going out the RCA jacks into the input of my Cambridge Soundworks Soundworks system - it's just an amped sub with a pair of small sats. The only wires in this are: 1. Power supply for SB3 2. Power supply for sub/amp 3. RCA to 3.5mm cable 4. Speaker wire for sats So no cable to be grounded or anything. What happens if your turn the input level to the sub/satellites DOWN and turn the output of the SB3 UP? Try running the SB3 at 50% or higher in volume. This will most likely drop the 'hum' from the noisy supply. I could buy that. I only hear the hum when nothing is playing, however, and turning the SB down didn't help. It's pretty quiet - I can only really hear it late at night when all is quiet. One thing of interest, though - I have another pair of the same speakers hooked to my computer. With that pair, unlike with the SB3, I am using the volume control they provide: http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/category.cgi?category=acc_volumeitem=c1swvolzz and in that application if I have the volume set halfway on that thing then I get a very loud hum.
