[slim] How to go from digital optical output to XLR digital input?

2012-02-03 Thread Mike Anderson

I have a device that outputs digital audio via optical, and I need to go
into a device that takes an AES3/EBU (XLR) digital input.

Does anyone know of an adapter, cord, or some other passthrough device
than can do this?

Alternatively, is there something that goes from digital optical to
analog stereo RCA?

I've searched with Google, but I can't find anything.

[slim] Looking for outdoor speakers

2010-06-11 Thread Mike Anderson

I'm looking for outdoor speakers for my patio.

Ideally, I'm thinking of a pair of powered speakers that work
wirelessly. For example, I'd plug something into the RCA outs of my
Squeezebox and, and they'd transmit the signal to the speakers.

Does such a thing exist? If not, what's the next most elegant
solution?

Re: [slim] RadioIO - Skips in music?

2009-12-06 Thread Mike Anderson

I've been in touch with the tech support people at RadioIO. I'm told
they rebooted the servers and re-started the streams, but I'm still
hearing skips today.

It's very frustrating, because they don't hear them, even listening
through a Squeezebox apparently...

It might help if other people here dropped them an email to confirm the
problem.

[slim] RadioIO - Skips in music?

2009-11-26 Thread Mike Anderson

I'm listening to Radioio on a Squeezebox. I've paid for the audiophile
channels.

Once every several minutes or so, I hear a short skip in the music --
not unlike what you used to hear on a phonograph when the needle skipped
on an album (just not as regular and often).

I've heard it on Luxe, Chill Lounge, and probably other channels.

Anybody else getting these?

[slim] Arg. Hard Drive disaster wreaking havoc (Internet radio, favorites, etc)

2008-03-02 Thread Mike Anderson

I had all my music stored on an external hard drive, which just
failed... I had it backed up, so I will hopefully be able to restore
my music library, but this failure seems to be wreaking havoc on other
parts of Squeeze Center.

I had Squeeze Center installed on my C Drive, which is still working
fine. So why can't I connect to RadioIO or Live365 anymore? Trying to
select RadioIO or Live365 simply results in a Connect timed out
message. They had been working fine up 'til now.

And why are my carefully-edited favorites now listed as empty?

In SlimServer, my favorites and other preferences used to be stored in
a .pref file. Does Squeeze Center store these settings in a file
somewhere?

If I reinstall Squeeze Center, will all my favorites etc. be gone for
good?

Any help during this trying time would be greatly appreciated.

All you have to do is click on the link above, and click on Call you

will give you the phone number for your Congress critter's office.

It's very easy to do, just takes a minute or so.

Internet radio is really the best way for unknown artists to get heard

[slim] Why did my album art stop working properly?

2007-06-17 Thread Mike Anderson

My album art had been working properly, but recently stopped working for
no identifiable reason. My album folders show up with question marks on
them. (If I click on the album folder and go into it, then I can see
the album art.) And similarly, when I run Moose, I can no longer
browse by cover art.

I can't figure out what I did wrong. I was editing some of the files
with TagRename, embedding art into the .m4a files in an effort to get
them to show up in Moose (which didn't work). That's when it stopped
working.

I tried clearing the browser's cache and turning off my anti-virus,
then re-scanning - no luck.

I'm on Windows XP Pro. Most of the album folders have a folder.jpg
and/or .folder.png file in them. Some of the songs have the album art
embedded as tags as well.

Any ideas?

thanks,
Mike

[slim] Help save Internet radio

2007-03-08 Thread Mike Anderson

Sign the petition here:

http://www.savethestreams.org/

On Friday March 2nd, the U.S. government (specifically, the Copyright
Royalty Board, or CRB) announced its determination of the royalty
rates Internet radio webcasters must pay the owners of sound recording
copyrights to license the music they play for the years 2006-2010. The
owners of these sound recording copyrights are, in the vast majority of
cases, recording companies (labels).

While successful webcasters which have built loyal audiences can
usually cover most of their costs from their revenue (and sometimes
even make a little profit), these new rates will almost certainly
destroy the Internet radio industry, as they amount to well over 100%
of even the most-successful webcasters' online radio revenues. In other
words, these fees are grotesquely disproportionate to any other expense
a webcaster would normally face, and certain to bankrupt him or her.

2007-01-05 Thread Mike Anderson

Based on my own preferences, and from what little I know about other
computer users:

I think you guys REALLY REALLY need a slick, responsive, clean-running
GUI along the lines of the iTunes software. For example, the ability
to drag and drop songs to make playlists. A slider to forward or
rewind through the song. Something that doesn't have to refresh.
Etc.

I'd be willing to be that the present software interface (and all its
bugs) is the number one reason your average customer shies away from
this product.

Let me just say, to all the fine folks who have worked hard to put

I realize it is not easy to develop a GUI like iTunes that would work
across all platforms, and I do not mean to suggest that the company
abandon the web-based interface. But there's no reason they could not
-also- have a slick GUI for Windows and Apple users, say.

Aha, thanks for the links, I knew those threads were out there

However, one thing that's still unclear to me: Is the Transporter's
hardware capable of doing this (i.e. is it just a matter of a firmware
update)?

I know one of the posters makes that assumption based on Sean Adams'
post, but it isn't obvious to me that this conclusion necessarily
follows from the statement he made.

If Slim Devices says, Yes, the hardware will allow for it, and yes, a
firmware upgrade to do this is in the foreseeable future, I'll order a
Transporter tomorrow. Otherwise I will wait, because with my room, I
really need something that will do this.

2006-11-28 Thread Mike Anderson

I seem to recall a thread about this somewhere, but now I can't find it,
and I don't believe this question was finally answered anyway, so:

Is it possible with the Transporter to put a digital signal processor
(e.g. a Behringer DEQ2496 unit to do room correction) purely in the
digital signal path by using the digital IOs in a manner similar to a
tape loop?

I'd like to get a Transporter and take advantage of the high quality

my room. I'd buy one if I knew this was possible.

[slim] Server not seeing playlists

2006-05-29 Thread Mike Anderson

Slim Server doesn't seem to be seeing my playlists anymore. Not sure
when this happened.

They're .m3u files, stored in my music directory. They used to work
fine, but now if I click on Browse Playlists, nothing shows up. I can
see them if I browse my music directory, but if I try to play them or
add them to the cue, nothing happens.

I tried rescanning for playlists; no dice.

Any ideas what's wrong?

I'm using SlimServer Version: 6.3.0 - 7668 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252.
Firmware 50. Windows XP.

I just upgraded to 6.3.0 from 6.2.2. Could this be the source of the
problem?

Thanks,
Mike

2006-03-15 Thread Mike Anderson

I'd conclude that even with a large album collection there's a
surprisingly high chance of two tracks (or more) from the same album
coming up in a relatively short random mix. Because this is somewhat
counter-intuitive and, as someone else noted, we tend to notice it when
it happens and not all the times that it doesn't, the natural reaction
is to conclude that the mix is not very random. My conclusion is that
the (pseudo) random mix is likely to be fine and it's our intuition
 that's awry.

 Sean.

I understand your logic, but one would have to conduct an empirical
test to be sure. The problem is that having a different number of songs
on each album makes the empirical test somewhat more difficult to
conduct.

I know how to compute a p-value, to be sure, but I just don't have the
time to do it right now. Perhaps one of these days, when I don't have
something a million times more important on my plate, I'll try it.
That should happen in about, oh, ten years or so.

Of course I raised the initial question, so I'm to blame.

[slim] Playing songs purchased from iTunes Store

2006-03-13 Thread Mike Anderson

I still have iTunes version 5 and Jhymn on my iBook. Is there any way
I can transfer her songs into my iTunes library, run Jhymn on them, and
transfer the unlocked songs back to her computer?

It's possible to isolate the input signal, and according to the

As far as I know, the Behringer isn't (at least I hope it isn't) doing
any conversion to analog. I'm taking the digital signal in, EQ'ing it,
and taking a digital signal out. I bought it specifically because I
wanted to keep the signal processing in the digital domain and convert
it to analog later.

The clipping is the volume meter on the Behringer going into the red.
I -think- it's clipping audibly, but I can't tell if it's the Behringer
or something down the line.

and play the same track, should be exactly the same.

According to the Behringer's manual, the meter measures the level of
the input signal, not the post-processed signal.

But that could be happening too, I suppose.

OK, I see the problem now. It's not the input signal. Even though the
meter measures the input signal, it -also- hits red if the output
signal clips.

So setting the gain offset to take off about 7db definitely solves the
problem.

I frequently use my laptop to control the Squeezebox, and I'm not that
thrilled with the clunky HTML approach. I'd really, really love to be
able to drag and drop to create and save playlists, scroll through my

basically. If Slim Devices could come up with a slick frontend like
that, I'd forget about anything else forever.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of other people feel the same way,
