Re: [slim] Re: Annoying Apple Lossless Issue

This sounds familiar. Give this a try.
Edit convert.conf and change:
alc wav * *

to:
alc wav * *
   [alac] -r $FILE$
I seem to think that worked for me the last time I tried.

Re: [slim] Album art in itunes

2006-10-27 Thread Steven Spies

You can use Save Album Art to Album Folder v1.3 at Doug's AppleScripts:
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#savealbumart
Or you can use Embed Artwork v1.1 at Doug's AppleScripts:
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#embedart
I don't recommend Embed Artwork v1.1 since it will bloat all your files with
artwork which is not very efficient and it will modify your files.
Another option
is to wait for Slim Server 7 which should support iTunes 7 artwork. Good Luck!

Re: [slim] Re: SlimServer running on a Playstation 3!

This does not sound far fetched at all now that Logitech is acquiring

Logitech manufactures a rather large number of PlayStation accessories including

I would not even be surprised to see SlimServer ship with the Playstation 3

To recap, I upgraded from v6.1.2 to v6.2.1 and was surprised that the
display font for large size (double height) had changed. I can see that
the intent was to make the font look a little rounder and the characters
variable width, but I just don't think the non-graphics displays in the
Slimp3 and SB1 are up to the task. I have to say that the worst
character I have noticed this far is 0 (zero), it looks like (). Also
using '| for 1 looks pretty odd too.

Is there any way to select the original display font for the Slimp3? I
have searched all the server settings in the web interface and it

Re: [slim] Re: sox, replaygain, and ogg

2005-10-22 Thread Steven Spies
Although, the ability to use the replaygain value from slimserver (6.2)
as a variable in convert.conf, I still think might be useful, if it's
possible. Is there someplace to look in the documentation for a list
of those variables?

I was hoping to do this exact thing! I want to be able to plug the
replaygain value in slimserver into the --scale option of LAME while
transcoding. This way I would get replaygained mp3 streams from
slimsever independent of file type as long as the source files
replaygain tags are recognized by slimserver. However I have not seen
a response to my previous posts on the subject so I do not know if
this is even possible, Steven

I have quite a few files in ogg format and I have tagged them all using
vorbisgain to generate the appropriate replaygain tags. Slimserver
reads these tags fine in the web interface, but, of course, when sox or
oggdec decodes them it ignores the replaygain tags so I'm out of luck
  with that.

I did note that sox has a -v (volume) option, that I think can be set
using the replaygain value in dB. I'm wondering if there is a variable
available to be used in convert.conf for setting the -v option (you
know, like $FILE$ or $QUALITY$ or $BITRATE$)? I was hoping for
  something like $GAIN$.

On a side note, I was using mplayer to decode *.oggs using the
  following line in slimserver-convert.conf:

 Code:

   [mplayer] -novideo -ao pcm:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$ 41 1/dev/null

Alas, since I've upgrade Ubuntu linux to Breezy (5.10), this hasn't
been working. It looks like only root can write to /dev/fd/4 now and
the song stops playing just a few (maybe 10) seconds into the song. I
wouldn't mind getting this working again, but I'd also like to get
replaygain support in sox since it is the default program to
  transcode ogg files in slimserver.

I would appreciate any ideas and guidance.

Replying to my own post... Okay, it looks like a confluence of changes
conspired to confound me, but I think I've sorted though it.

 The changes?

I updated mplayer from 1.0pre6 to 1.0pre7 so, much of the time, I just
 had the slimserver-convert.conf line wrong.

I had updated Ubuntu Hoary to Breezy and somehow not all of the perl
modules that I had installed previously came accross, so when I started
slimserver, it asked me to install several, which I did as a regular
user (not root) using the built-in utility (pretty slick, actually).
The fact that they were not installed as root, I think caused the
problem with not being able to write to /dev/fd/4.

I subsequently installed the afore mentioned perl modules normally,
throught apt-get. Once I did this, and got rid of the modules
slimserver had download for me, things started working fine again.
Well, with one exception. Apparantly, my distribution's version of
DBI.pm (perl 5.8.7) conflicts with the version that comes with
Slimserver, so I had to rename the slimserver version (DBI.pm.old).

I realize most of these problems were brought on through upgrading an
my own meddling, but I thought it important to post the results in case
someone else encounters similar problems and goes searching through
 these forums for an answer.

Although, the ability to use the replaygain value from slimserver (6.2)
as a variable in convert.conf, I still think might be useful, if it's
possible. Is there someplace to look in the documentation for a list

[slim] ReplayGain LAME --scale?

2005-10-13 Thread Steven Spies
This is an idea I have had for some time. The idea is to use the
relative volume adjustment tag (RAVD) in an AIFF or Apple Lossless
file as input to the --scale option in LAME while transcoding in
SlimServer. I can set this tag with in iTunes with iVolume that uses
the ReplayGain algorithms. This way I can get the ReplayGain
adjustment I want while streaming or with my SliMP3 and keep my music
library lossless in iTunes and SlimServer. It is my understanding that
the latest versions of SlimServer now recognize this tag so I think it
would be possible to add this functionality. I would attempt this
myself but I have zero coding skills. Anyone up for the challenge?

What I would love to see in the interim is for some clever person to
create a plug in or a modification to the web interface that would
allow turning on and off and setting the options for the flac

takers?

Well, in a pinch you can do flac-flac conversion on the server and
get replaygain, but you're giving up fastforward/rewind if you
do. Depending on which is more important to you, it might be worth the
trade off until replaygain is implemented in the firmware. (or if you
have a unit older than the sb2)

  It may for mp3s - I really don't know.

pretty much the same deal as for flac. you can use a program like
mp3gain to apply the change to the file, or you can do mp3 decoding on
the server (with the appropriate decoder) and apply replaygain (from
tags) before sending to the squeezebox.

that you turn Sound Check off and apply MP3Gain

Re: [slim] Apple lossless on SB 2: is there any advantage with the native FLAC?

well, if you can handle uncompressed over your wireless setup, or have it
 wired,
then SB1 will be less intense as far as CPU since it only uncompresses without
having to compress back to wav (unless you disable aac-flc for sb2). The
analogue audio out is FAR better on the SB2 if you plan to use that

I know it natively decodes flac.

If there is not advantage, what is the advantage when using FLAC as a
source? Is it that you only have to stream the compressed file? So maybe you
save 40 to 60% of file network traffic?

AAC might be preferred if you are tied to iTunes or iPOD's. HAving flac means
less cpu usage on the server and, yes 40-60% savings on bandwidth. Audio
quality of flac vs apple lossless is really an unending argument :)

  Media V2 codec nowadays.

That's yet one more reason why $5/month unlimited DRM makes a lot more
sense than $0.99/song Apple DRM. Even if the format eventually becomes
obsolete, it's hard to argue you didn't get your $5/month worth.

You're free at any time to pick the best deal going for a monthly music
subscription. If someone has a hot new codec/format, and you want to
switch, it's easy to do so as you have little investment in your own
 DRM music collection.

It's also very likely the hardware will become obsolete before the
format does, so that's less of an issue when you look at the big
picture. Besides, much of the hardware, and the PlaysForSure standard
itself, will hopefully be able to support at least the next round of
new formats as they become viable.

Eventually, it's safe to assume new formats will simply require more
computing horsepower than current players have and/or will support
multichannel (i.e. 5.1) audio. Those formats will require newer
hardware than virtually everything shipping today.

But, in the meantime, I sincerely hope the Slim folks will enhance the
SqueezeBox (or at least SB2) to play subscription based DRM WMA. If
Roku can do it, I don't see why Slim cannot? I suspect Microsoft would
love to add the Squeezebox to their list of compatible PlaysForSure
 hardware?

Re: [slim] Multi Genre tags

2005-05-05 Thread Steven Spies
Andrew, for this to work you need to enter a , in the Multiple
Items In Tags field under Behavior in Sever Settings I would not
recommend using a , though as it is a common character in tags. I
use a bullet myself. Some peolpe have mentioned using + and the
description in SlimServer suggests a ; You can also enter more then
one character in the field such as +; and SlimSever will split the
genres and artists accordingly. Hope that helps, Steven

Is this the expected behaviour, or is this not the way to make this work,

Re: [slim] Re: Just getting started...

2005-04-19 Thread Steven Spies
Ben, one of the best places I have found for information about
compressed audio formats is www.hydrogenaudio.org It contains a vast
amount of information but try not to be intimidated. When you have
time browse the FAQ section there. Since you are going to be using a
Squeezebox2, you should stick with MP3 or FLAC. I personally use LAME
3.90.3 with --alt-preset standard --scale x.xxx I calculate the
scale with WaveGain in album mode. That way all of my albums have the
same relative loudness. One could also use MP3gain on the files after
compression but I would find it easier to do it before hand. However
if I had Squeezebox2 and enough disk space I would go the FLAC route
for sure. Good luck, Steven

with LAME. Thanks for the suggestion.
You prefaced your suggestion with, if you are going the MP3
Route. Is there a better route to consider that will also allow a
fair amount of compression and decent reproduction?

Re: [slim] Re: Sonos Doesn't Have to be a Threat

2005-04-14 Thread Steven Spies
I know it has been mentioned before but an app like this running on

I use Telcanto on a IPAQ 3715 to control SlimServer - it's terrific. The

Because it's an app not a browser it's a great deal faster for browsing
albums/genres/artists and expanding to see underlying tracks. It seems
to make SlimServer respond much more quickly (than via a browser) for
initiating playback, pausing etc. It displays artwork nicely. I'm
waiting for a DAB USB tuner so that I can add playlists with
digital-only stations, but I can already access internet-radio.

It supports multiple SBs (very useful) multiple SlimServers (probably
not necessary), making it easy to synchronize devices or play different
music into different rooms. Planning to have 6+ SB2's around my new
 house.

As a side benefit, it also has Nevo remote control on it, so I can work
all my IR controlled equipment also. My wife also likes the fact that
our contacts, email calendar also synch to the IPAQ - now all I need
is an IPAQ that can act as my home phone, perhaps by leveraging Vonage
 or similar.

There's only one 'skin', so colour scheme is what you get.

[slim] Squeezebox2 Native FLAC ReplayGain

2005-04-13 Thread Steven Spies
I don't mean to be a pest but is there any progress to adding native
FLAC ReplayGain to the Squeezebox2? I know it can be done server side
while decoding to PCM with the
--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless option in the convert.conf
but having it done right in the Squeezebox2 would be sweet! It would
also be great to have the ability to switch the
--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless modes right in SlimServer
without having to edit the convert.conf. Do bug numbers already exist
for these enhancements? I found a couple requests on the bug list but
they are more general ReplayGain enhancements. Should I start a new
one?

Re: [slim] Pony???

2005-04-11 Thread Steven Spies
The pony reference reminds me of an early Simpsons episode named
Simpson and Delilah It goes something like this:
Homer: [kindly] And what does my little girl want?
Lisa: An absence of mood swings and some stability in my life.
Homer: Uh... How about a pony?
Lisa: Okay!
It is one of my favorite Simpsons quotes and it still makes me laugh

Re: [slim] Squeezebox2

Native FLAC and Cross Fading on the SB2, Right On! Please tell me the
SB2 supports FLAC ReplayGain, fingers crossed. Now do I order the
black, platium or both, we do get a free pony after all ;)

On Tue, 8 Mar 2005 21:30:01 -0800, Sean Adams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi everyone,

Lots of folks noticed that we were running low on inventory, spending
less time here, and working our butts off on SlimServer 6. As
suspected, there is a new product. Squeezebox2 is in full production
now, and the first units will ship on March 31.

Squeezebox2 addresses all of the top performance and functionality
requests that come up here every day.

802.11g/WPA: for better range, compatibility, security, and throughput
 FLAC: for reduced bandwidth usage
More memory: for better streaming of PCM audio over wireless

I'm just getting started... don't worry, I'll get to the pony. :)

Although I don't often contribute to the audiophile discussions, I
really do enjoy reading them. Regardless of who can hear what, the fact
is that there are indeed some real measurable characteristics such as
output levels, THD+N, and clock precision where we had room for
significant improvement. Squeezebox2 has completely done away with all
the limitations - we're now doing all of the audio decoding and DSP
work in software, and this gave me the freedom to design the digital
outputs and analog stages exactly the way I wanted them. Please see the
FAQ and the hardware specs page for details on the new design.

Among other things, the new design has allowed us to implement cross
fading and some very impressive visualizers. Of course, having it all
done in software (on an extremely fast processor) leaves the door open
for more functionality down the road.

Now some people have pooh-poohed the idea of visualizers as just being
eye candy, but personally I think a high resolution, ultra-fast
spectrum analyzer is quite a thing to behold. We've got one now - full
screen, 64 bands, 30 frames per second, and perfectly synced with the
audio. There are a few visualizers to choose from, including a smaller
spectrum analyzer and analog VU meters.

Squeezebox2 also has a new vacuum fluorescent display - we had it
custom designed by Noritake specifically to support the ideas we had in
mind for new fonts, animations, and visualizers. The display is
slightly larger physically, and has more than twice the resolution at
320x32 pixels. It has multiple brightness levels of course, but it also
has grayscale capability, which we use for the visualizers and
 graphics.

A few bonus features that you might not have expected:

Dual antennas: Squeezebox2 has both an internal AND an external
antenna. The 802.11g radio takes advantage of this configuration to
automatically select the best antenna for transmit/receive, optimizing
signal strength and vastly improving range/throughput.

Bridging: yes, Squeezebox2 can share its wireless connection with a
wired ethernet device connected through its (100Mbps) ethernet port.
This allows other devices in the home theatre, such as Xboxen,
Playstations, Tivos, or HTPCs to connect wirelessly to your access
 point.

Pony: there is a discount code, FREEPONY. Enter this on the order
page to get $20 off on either the wired or the wireless model.

Finally, a big thank you goes to every one of our customers and
especially the people on this list. Thank you for promoting the
product, helping us improve it, and suggesting ideas.

The new web site is up now: http://www.slimdevices.com

slimserver simply reads the file system. all genre/album, etc is taken from
 the
tags within the files themselves. If you do not have any tags, then there is
 a
guess tags feature. settings for this can be anything you want that will best
match your file/tree structure. see server settings, formatting. The
descriptions there will let you know what values you can use. Read the
titleformat description above that for a bit more detail.
