[slim] Low level buzz from Transporter

2008-08-12 Thread bigfool1956

Seems I have a problem with my Transporter, and I'm not sure what it
could be.

Basically if I attach my transporter to my system it creates a very low
level buzz in the speakers, on any input and with the volume reduced to
zero. Although it is (very) low level it does affect sound quality on
vinyl. Obviously I cannot isolate the buzz from playback when using the
TP, but I assume it is also having a negative affect there too.

If I pull the mains cord, it stops (surprise surprise). If I pull the
interconnects, it stops - so probably not mains related.

I don't believe it's a ground loop, as it affects all inputs, and is
not volume related.

Right now I'm pulling the mains chord when using vinyl, but that's
hardly ideal.

Ideas anyone?

As I say, as it's not volume depndent I don't imagine it's a ground
loop, but I happen to have such a plug so I can give it a go tomorrow.

Re: [slim] Voltage monitor in Transporter - Accurate ???

2008-08-04 Thread bigfool1956

Actually the mains voltage is only a nominal voltage, and regulations
allow for a percentage variation around that nominal voltage. If you
read the quote below from Wikipedia, you will see that the UK is still
generally outputing 240V, despite what the Daily Mail might like to
say.

In my place I normally get about 240V during the day, and up to 250V at
night - according to the TP.

quote from Wiki:
Following voltage harmonization all electricity supply within the
European Union is now nominally 230 V ± 10% at 50 Hz [1]. For a
transition period (1995–2008), countries who previously used 220 V will
use a narrower asymmetric tolerance range of 230 V +6% #8722;10% and
those (like the UK) who previously used 240 V use now 230 V +10%
#8722;6%[2]. Note that no change in voltage is required by either
system as both 220V and 240V fall within the lower 230 V tolerance
bands (230 V ±6%). In practice this means that countries such as the UK
that previously supplied 240 V continue to do so, and those that
previously supplied 220 V continue to do so. However equipment should
be designed to accept any voltages within the specified range.

In the United States[3] and Canada[4], national standards specify that
the nominal voltage at the source should be 120 V and allow a range of
114 to 126 V (-5% to +5%). Historically 110, 115 and 117 volts have
been used at different times and places in North America.[citation
needed] Main power is sometimes spoken of as “one-ten”; however, 120 is
the nominal voltage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_electricity

for the whole article.

Re: [slim] WAV or FLAC ?

2008-07-31 Thread bigfool1956

Hi DejanM, welcome to the forum.

FLAC is a lossless compression format, which means that there is no
quality loss whatsoever when using it to store music. It has the
advantage that it can be properly tagged, which is important when you
are storing your music on a computer.

When a lossless format such as FLAC or Apple Lossless is decompressed
you get an identical file to the wave file from which it was created.

Some people can hear a difference between the sound of a FLAC being
decoded in the server or the hardware, but the machanism as to why this
should be so is unclear. It is not a function of the format at all. In
the server you can opt to have your flac files decompressed in the
hardware (native, and is the default setting) or in the server (flac to
wave). It is simple to swap between the two, and see if you find any
difference.

Flac is an open source compression method, and as such you need have no
worry that it will become unavailable in the future.

Therefore in conclusion, the best way to go is to store your music in
FLAC. The bonus is, you will use half the disc space.

Re: [slim] Powerline network question.

2008-07-23 Thread bigfool1956

That's really going to depend on what type of UPS you have, and how you
have it set up. For the homeplugs to keep working they must all be on a
UPS, plus homeplugs are very sensitive to being blocked by cable breaks
and other electronics.

For example, I have a pair I used between my router and my cable modem,
and if I plug one or other of them into a simple extension lead, they
completely cease to talk to each other.

Based on this my feeling is that unless you whole house is on a UPS,
you are unlikely to be successful. However, it may be possible to set
things up in a way that it can operate.

may be able to get a vast improvement by making some minor changes to
the wiring in your breaker panel.

To figure out if they're on the same phase, first identify the breakers
for the outlets that the homeplug adaptors are connected to.

Then measure with an AC voltmeter across two of those breakers*. If you
get about 0V, they are on the same phase (good). If you get about 240V,
they are on different phases. To change the phase that a circuit is
on, swap it with the wire going to the breaker immediately below it.
(miniature dual breakers count as the same breaker here).

Swap wires as needed until all circuits powering homeplug devices
measure 0V against each other. An electrician can do this for you in a
 few minutes.

 * you can also figure it out visually by counting spaces, but using a
voltmeter is faster and more reliable.

This is only relevant if the OP is in North America, in the UK and the
rest of Europe virtually no homes have 2 or 3 phases connected, and if
they do the cross-phase voltage will be around 440V - which is
extremely hazardous. Fingers out!

microwave, deepfryer, fridges, etc. all on one phase.

 Tom

OK, I stand corrected about Switzerland. I have to say that (apart from
specifically designed 3-phase sockets for cookers etc) having outlets on
different phases in the same room is risky at best, and AFAIK illegal in
the UK. Reason: because you can have two phases within touching
distance, in the unlikely but possible event you have a fault in two
appliances you can get 380-440V straight through you. That tends to be
one's final mistake!

I guess in the US you need three phase supplies to stop high power
appliances, such as ovens and washers from drawing emourmous current,
by upping the voltage.

Have mananged to switch the SB3 power to a different spur from the
fusebox - this is now working fine.

 Food for thought??

See now here's another thing, because in the UK we use ring mains as
standard, which wikipedia implies is pretty unique. This means we
shouldn't have 'spurs', and it should actually be quite hard to find
another socket in the same room that is not on the same ring. However
DIY rewiring (maybe a previous owner) can change that situation.
Generally though using a different socket in the same room of a UK
house is identical to using the same socket.

On the point of 3 phase in the same room, obviously in the US the
potential even across two phases is less than the potential on a single
phase in Europe. Should be approximately 200V assuming each phase is
110V. Yes it can be fatal, but usually it isn't. 400V on the other hand
is survivable, but the odds are considerably less (been there, done
that, and boy does it hurt).

Going back to OP's original point, and adding to Sean's post, homeplugs
don't like electricity meters, and if you really have two lines in to
the house, however they are arranged, then the path from one line to
the other is likely to pass through the meter, which would have a
significant effect. In that case changing in the way Sean described
would have a benefit.

Anyway, I was playing an album yesterday evening using the computer
that has less tracks, and one of the songs was missing. I looked for it
via music folder browse, and still couldn't see it. Looking at the
folder from the other computer via Explorer, I could see that I do have
the track. but:

The tracks is called Whatever Would Robert Have Said?, and as the
file name cannot have a question mark in it with windows, it has been
changed by the ripper to an upside down question mark. I can't help
thinking this must have something to do with it. Unfortunately I didn't
have time to see if I could see the track via the other SC.

Anybody else had any issues with upside down question marks in file
names?

Had a chance to access the other machine tonight (my desktop), and this
is definitely the problem. On the machine that is not missing tracks, I
can see the song with the upside down question mark in SC.

On the other hand I could not see this track on the machine where the
tracks are missing (an old lappy) even if I tried to navigate there
through the music folder.

I renamed the file to exclude the character, rescanned on both
machines, and now it appears in both! Both machines are running XP, and
both are fully up to date. Both use Avast antivirus.

If I can't work out why this is, I guess I'm going to have to go
through all 8,000 tracks I have with explorer trying to find and rename
the 200 odd tracks that I am missing. Bummer!

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter slow?

You could also try checking to make sure that Windows hasn't smacked
down your hard-drive into PIO mode. If it has it wastes CPU cycles
reading files (i.e. your music) which it could be using for
applications.

Only takes a minute to check it out. See this thread:

Re: [slim] Occasional Garbled Static on Apple Lossless

2008-03-13 Thread bigfool1956

You will only get 24 bit ALAC files if your original source was a 24 bit
file.

In other words, if all your files were ripped from CD, then you will
have no 24 bit files.

Note: iTunes cannot convert the bit depth from 16 bit to 24 bit, or
vice versa. You can however feed it 16 or 24 bit files, with 44.1, 48,
96 sample rates and it will happily pack them into ALAC. (It may do
other sample rates and bit depths, these are the ones I have tried)

Re: [slim] Looks like Blu-Ray has won

2008-02-18 Thread bigfool1956

I'm not about to change my main listening environment to more than 2
channels any time soon, even rhough I love multi-channel for film etc.

This isn't really because I'm a Luddite, but because I cannot see how I
can physically achieve it in my room, and get the same quality, plus the
cost would be prohibitive.

However, if I could get music in 24/96 (nice) untainted by the loudness
wars (vital), and if I could then get that on a hard disc to feed my TP,
then I think I would probably become a resonably good blu-ray consumer.

On the other hand, Dolby TrueHD is pretty much an extension of DVDA -
it still uses MLP for example. I believe this is a packeted format, and
as such should be able to be read much more successfully off the disc,
than redbook CD. LPCM can be output through the digital outs of a
player..

So I'm thinking PS3 - Transporter, which of course already works, but
if we got a lot more choice of discs, it could be cool.

Ah but, now we are back to discs for playing, instead as a transport
medium for the data. So we are back to ripping, and talking about that
on a US hosted web site could be illegal - so I won't. Sigh.

Guess it's back to hoping for legal hi-res download opportunities.

Re: [slim] twonky Media?

2008-02-18 Thread bigfool1956

It could be that if, for some reason, SS has not been shifted to port
9001, that it won't start due to a conflict with Twonky, which would
correspond to something you said on a nother thread.

I would suggest that you use the admin facility of the QNAP to disable
Twonky for now, and then reboot the machine to see if SS starts, and to
see what port it is using.

Re: [slim] twonky Media?

2008-02-17 Thread bigfool1956

Port 9001 is the correct port to use in a QNAP installation, precisely
because the pre-installed Twonky uses 9000 (SS is not pre-installed by
QNAP, but by the distributor). This is not the normal port for SS.

As amcluesent said, if 9001 is not working, you need to check that SS
is actually running.

Re: [slim] DAC quality...SBR vs. USB-DAC vs. Apple TV

2008-02-16 Thread bigfool1956

Unfortunately I don't have an SB3 or an SBR to compare with the ApplTV,
I have a transporter.

However, I also have an ApplTV, and my opinion of the analogue output
is that it is extremely poor, with no dynamics or life in it at all.
Consequently I use it via its optical out straight into my AV receiver,
in which manner it performs quite well.

However there is more to the difference between the Slim products and
the AppleTV. In particular the AppleTV is aimed at an AV experience
rather than a straight music experience, and as such is useless without
being connected to a TV, and in addition it is set up to use a
widescreen TV, not a 4:3 ratio screen.

Basically the products are aimed at slightly different user needs, and
you must decide what your needs are before you can decide which is the
best product to met them. I personally think the AppleTV is good at
what it does for its price-point, but I wouldn't want it in a music
only system.

2008-02-15 Thread bigfool1956

Hi,

On the QNAP you need to use port 9001 and not 9000. This is a small
change required for the QNAP, because as you have seen the
pre-installed media server already uses 9000.

Re: [slim] How should I set this up?

2008-02-12 Thread bigfool1956

Signal strength is a big factor when streaming music. As you have the
opportunity to wire the SBR direct to your router, then that is
definitely your best option, because it saves all the wifi hassles that
sometimes ensue.

If your computer is a desktop, consider using homeplugs to wire it to
the router.

[slim] New FW, old SS questions

2008-01-31 Thread bigfool1956

I've got SS running on my QNAP which was delivered in December last year
(not sure exactly which version as I'm abroad).

It strikes me as very simple to install SC7 on my PC, connect my TP to

My questions are:

Will the latest FW work with a recent slimserver version?

Will I be constantly be requested/required to downgrade the FW?

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-09 Thread bigfool1956

Most of the views on the new Duet are based on us being current users.
Here's a different viewpoint

I had persuaded a colleague of mine that an SB3 would be a good
purchase for him, and he was going to get one over Xmas. As it happens
he didn't get round to it, so after the break I immediately showed him
the new Duet on the site.

His reaction was that he was glad he hadn't bought the SB3, and that
paying an extra 100 Euro was a worthwhile investment. So from this
(admittedly small) sample it would appear that SD are on a winner here
- and let's face it, we all want them and their products to suceed.

Some have pointed out that fast-forwarding through the ads at the

But still, it does seem like a step in the right direction, although
how they will police this section I do not know:

Owners would not be allowed to sell or give away their original discs
once they had made a copy.

Maybe if we go to a used CD store, a SWAT team will raid our house to
see if the disc we have just handed over is stored on any computer or
