[slim] Logitech brain-dead-edness

2010-01-14 Thread byKnight

So I wanted to pick up an extra remote. I've bought squeezeboxes and
accessories online before from the company web site.

But I couldn't find accessories for sale on the Squeezebox web site any
more. Then I see the sticky post above that, since December, accessories
are not available at the web site any more with an expression that they
hope to have them available soon.

Another disconnect with the Joe Customer.

Yes. I signed up last night. After upgrading my SqueezeCenter to from

Re: [slim] Warning: Linksys WRT110 Rangeplus Wireless Router Squeezebox

2008-10-27 Thread byKnight

My WRTG54 died several months ago and I replaced it with the WRT110. I
had all manner of problems with it. Most annoying was that occasionally
none of the devices connected to it (either wirelessly or wired) could
talk to any other of the devices, nor the internet. Only cyclying the
power on the router would correct this, and then only for a short
while.

I systematically worked the problem until I hit on the answer for me. I
changed the routers MTU from Automatic to 1400 after some
experimentation.

Now this value may not be appropriate for you. Google for procedures on
how to find the best MTU value for your setup.

Re: [slim] Can SlimServer serve UDP Multicast Streams?

2008-03-30 Thread byKnight

And while synchronization is *possible* with multicast UDP, it wouldn't
be very reliable. Your players would get of synch. Slim Devices'
synchronization mechanism is maturing and works better

And I find streaming FLACs to two SB3s and two Softsqueeze client, all
wirelessly works flawlessly. For a home network, I don't think there's
much payoff to going multicast. The pipe in my home, and most people's,
I suspect, is plenty big.

 Thanks!

Then I assume in the future as I rip more CDs I would do that on a

 WHS?

You should copy all of your music to \\SERVER\Music.

You should also set SqueezeCenter (or SlimServer) to find the music at
\\SERVER\Music (not D:\Music). That way, if you have folder duplication
turned on for the Music folder and you lose a hard drive, you can keep
streaming tunes with missing a beat.

Re: [slim] SlimServer on an OLPC

The SlimServer will have to retrieve the files over the network from the
NAS. The SlimServer will then send the files, again over the network, to
the Squeezebox.

So, no, SlimServer running on the OLPC can't cause the NAS to magically
deliver the files directly to the Squeezebox.

Re: [slim] When to expect a Squeezebox version 4 ?

2007-02-20 Thread byKnight

Please, just make SlimServer reliable. My Squeezebox experience falls
far short of what I think it should be considering what I paid for two
SB3s. And the blame belongs to SlimServer.

I would happily buy at least two more SB3s, except that I'm sick of
wrestling with SlimServer issues.

I don't use iTunes, I don't use MusicIP or any of what I would call the
more exotic plug-ins. Until Slim Devices can pair their hardware with
a server solution that's on par with the quality of the SqueezeBox, I
consider the Squeezebox a very poor value.

Yes, I always check in here *and* with Tech Support when I encounter a
problem that's new to me.

The only solution that has every worked has been to wipe away all
traces of SlimServer and reinstall. Sometimes it takes to or three
iterations of this before things start working reliably again.

I really love the Squeezebox. But SlimServer is nowhere near on-par
with the quality of the Squeezebox. It tarnishes what would otherwise
be a great experience.

[slim] Re: Fail to connect SB3 to w/less router

2006-12-21 Thread byKnight

I was getting the same message when I setup my 2nd SB3 (my first
wireless SB) a couple of evenings ago. I also use WEP. (I'd rather use
WPA, but I have a device on my network that uses a LinkSys wga54g
wireless game adapter that I had lying around; it doesn't support WPA,
just WEP.)

I fixed the problem after reading the following on the troubleshooting
FAQ
(http://faq.slimdevices.com/index.php?sid=16862lang=enaction=artikelcat=2id=14artlang=en)

Ensure that you're using the first key in the router's setup if it lets
 you specify multiple keys

My router (LinkSys WRT54G) has you enter a passphrase from which it
generates four different WEP keys. I had it set to use the third one in
the list, and had my other wireless devices set up with the same hex
string.

When I reconfigured the router to use the first hex string in the list,
updated the configuration of my other devices likewise, and put that hex
string into the SB3, all was well.

JJZolx;163588 Wrote:
I wonder if doing this in software at the Squeezebox would be viable on
SB2 and later generation products. Beside the setup issues, it would
also save anyone from having to render two sets of fonts.

I agree.

I don't know anything about the SB firmware, but based on what I can
infer about its function, my first idea was that a small firmware
change could be made that remaps the way the display hardware is
addressed. For example, if the display is m pixels wide and n pixels
high, pixel (0,0) maps to (m,n), (1,0) maps to (m-1,n), etc.

But since we don't have access to the firmware, I can only fiddle with
the SlimServer code.

But for something as straightforward as making the display work
upside-down, a firmware option seems like the most efficient option.

[slim] Flip display for kitchen installation

2006-12-19 Thread byKnight

I want to install an SB3 under a kitchen cabinet. To keep it as
unobtrusive as possible, I'd like to mount it upside-down, which would
allow me to hide about 1.25 inches of the total height of the unit in
the recess at the bottom of the cabinet.

I've found this older thread involving an SB2.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=15633highlight=%22flip+display%22

This sounds like a perfect solution for software, but I'm not aware of
an existing cabability (and I don't know if such functionality would
need to be in the firmware or could be implemented in SlimServer).

So, have I overlooked an existing software solution for this? And if I
haven't, is the display in the SB3 connected in such a way that would
allow me to turn it over without the use of a soldering iron?

eye-level, much like a under-the-cabinet clock radio.

It will be easy enough to run the requisite cables through the
cabinets. A T-Amp and speakers (angled down a bit) will sit on top of
the cabinets.

I know almost nothing about the plug-in interface or even how to build

Similar experience here. 6.5.x works fine for me EXCEPT I sometimes have
to fiddle with it to get to connect to the server. I don't mind it so
much, because I like the improvements made between 6.3.x and 6.5.x.

But for the first two months I had my SB3, I was running 6.3.x, and
although there were some bugs here and there, it did ALWAYS connect to
the server immediately upon my pressing Power or Play on the remote. I
finally had found a streaming music device that my wife enjoyed using.

With 6.5.x, although I have no complaints personally, the WAF has gone
way south.

I've got my second SB3 on the way. I may run 6.3.x on both to ensure my
wife is happy.
