Re: [slim] Plans if Logitech pulls the plug ?
Can I ask a naive question. For someone like me who just uses my squeezeboxes and LMS to stream music from a local server, isn't this setup impervious so long as I have the hardware and LMS software plus relevant plugins such as Airplay to feed my Liberatone Zipp. I understand as technology and society move forward my system can't evolve to take advantage of changes. But if Logitech pulls the plug surely at least my current set up will still work. Correct? chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

(I'll just explain to my kid that that's the way it is). Re: [slim] LMS and PLEX: no internet but wifi
Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't say my question was pure PLEX as, to me, familiar is I am with LMS, I can't see why it needs an internet connection to stream locally. And there is no forum for PLEX like there is for LMS, to garner reliable info; especially not one constituted by a knowledgeable group of tech savies as exist on here. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=10 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] LMS and PLEX: no internet but wifi
This is really more PLEX question than an LMS one. I have both running on my local network. Often my internet goes down but LMS still streams nicely to my Squeezeboxes throughout the house. This is as expected as my music is stored locally. But the same doesn't happen with PLEX even though I have my files stored locally as well. When the internet goes down it won't stream to my TV via chromecast. Can any of the wifi/internet cognoscenti explain why this is so? Why does LMS work and PLEX doesn't when the internet goes down even though both are streaming from my local computer? Is it simply a PLEX thing? chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=10 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Portable Airplay Speaker
I've got the Zipp 2 and it works fine with the airplay plugin too. It has one problem, pointed out in another thread, that when it connects to my wifi network the first time it comes on with max volume. I have to standby to adjust immediately so as not to bug who ever is in earshot (kid, neighbours). But my biggest problem though is not Zipp related, its Ben Stokes. I'm an Aussie and old enough to have suffered through Botham at Headingley and now this! Amazing. Yes, we've had the bulk of the great batsmen over the past 40 years, but why do England get the killer alrounders who can win a game, a series in one fell swoop (Beefy, Freddie, and now this monster). I don't want to derail the thread, just venting. At least I didn't suffer through it in audiophile quality on the Zipp. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110899 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] UE Megablast 3
Thanks Michael. Oh well, I'll either wait (in vaiin?) for logitech to implement airplay2 or UpnP on the the Blast range or go for another decent battery powered airplay speaker. At this stage other than the expensive and not waterproof Zipp range there aren't many options, but I'm patient and not in dire need, just 'dire want'. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110193 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] UE Megablast 3
Just a quick question following on my previous post. Can I play LMS on UE Blast/Megablast from my phone via the SB Player app via wifi? Currently I play LMS on on my UE Boom in this way via Bluetooth, but if don't much like Bluetooth so would love to switch to wifi. I know it doesn't have airplay etc but is the fact that the Blast can use wifi enough given I will be using SB Player to link to LMS. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110193 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] UE Megablast 3
All very interesting, but isn't there a good chance that Logitech/UE will, in due course, simply enable AirPlay or UPnP-AV for ther Blast range of speakers. I'm hoping this is on their agenda. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110193 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I really appreciate it. Anyway, I now have a good idea of the options and I can weight them up. I can't re-purpose my current (soon to be old) computer as it's too big for the cupboard option and I don't feel like downsizing it to fit. I have an RPi so that's an option, just need to pair it with a NAS or even just a 2TB external HDD for my music. And then there's Vortexbox, something I'll have to look into when I get a chance and the fact that a member here is kindly willing to help out. As for backups, I'm well on top of that (although my methods are not state of the art). I'm not a fan of RAID, but regularly clone my OS and keep multiple copies of this on other HDDs on my computer as well as on my massive 4-bay external HDD enclosure. The latter is also used for copies of my music and my most important visual media files. The film and tv stuff I'm happy to lose I don't back up. So far never lost a thing in all my years of computing. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110272 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS
Bump Come on. Please just quick advice form someone who's been there before (which I assume was many of you). It was the default position back in the early days of squeezebox (pre-2010). I'm still in default mode, but am wondering if I should/must move on in order to do what LMS (and now Plex) are best at (serving and steaming ever increasing content). chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110272 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS
Im a long time user of LMS (10 years) and have always just kept my files on my Windows 7 PC and streamed the music from there to my various Squeezeboxes. I have a decent mesh Wi-Fi set up so I can steam easily throughout my apartment. In addition, Ive recently started to stream my visual media files stored on my PC via Plex. I have about 1.3TB of lossless classical music files and 4TB of film/TV and growing (mainly kids stuff). I turn the computer off every night since sleep/hibernation mode is a bit dicey. My current home computer is fairly powerful, used for all my home and work computing tasks and has tons of storage (plus I can always fill the numerous disk bays with larger HDDs as time goes by). But its getting long in the tooth and Im soon going to upgrade it to a current model PC (Intel 8700 processor etc). Im just wondering if its still the best option for my needs to use the new PC as the storage and streaming device as well as for general computing tasks. Or are there real advantages (other than leaving the system on 24/7) to moving to a NAS and/or Raspberry Pi set up for media serving via LMS and Plex? (FYI, I have built and used a RPI a few years ago for a couple of months for one-off reasons, so do know the basic rudiments of RPI plus Max2play). Basically, Im asking can I just stick with the structure of what Ive got now or are there compelling reasons for me (given my rather uncomplicated needs) to change one of the more complex streaming set ups that proliferate here. Im not really a technical person so the simpler the better as long as it does the job. Any advice truly appreciated. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110272 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Commercial players that work off LMS?
Thanks. Good to know there are other options than trying to hunt down another SB Boom secondhand. What do people think is better general term, including future proofing, between going the wireless speaker plus Chomecast with plugin (say of JBL Playlist) and a used Boom. Both are about the same price? chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Commercial players that work off LMS?
Forgive the clueness nature of my question but am I right to suppose that I can just get one of these wireless speakers, like a Google Home Max, somehow configure it to work with LMS that is on my desktop, and operate it with my android phone running Squeeze Ctrl? In other words, it will be just like a Squeezebox Boom? (I currently have one, love it, but know its days are numbered). Or do I have to connect say a SB Touch, Duet or Raspberry Pi a well? ( I have a few of these as well). chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks, I didn't even know specialised folder based players existed. I will check them out. I really need one that can play nice with cue files, as well as most lossless file formats, including APE. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106240 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] How to organise Poweramp like Squeezebox
I'm a long time SB user. I organise my 76,000 odd tracks on my computer the following way: Music folder; 15 subfolders with different generes of classical music; thousands of sub-sub-folders with individual albums, many of which involve mutliple cds (so sub-sub-sub folders for each cd). This structure works perfectly for me, and I access my music using Sqeeze Ctrl on my cell phone using the Music Folder option as my point of entry. No play lists, albums, genres, years etc. Just music folder and sub-folders etc No doubt many SB affectionados use the music player Poweramp on their phones. Me, I am just new to this, but I intend to put a 256gb micro sd card in my new phone (Galaxy s7 edge) and use this exclusivley for music. But by of the life of me I can't seem to get Poweramp to read the music in the same way as my SBs do? I have a 'Music' folder on the sd card, and various subfolders, but Poweramp just reads all the albums in the Music folder in alphabetical order as if they are in one folder, disregarding the sub-folder structure. (And yes, I have these subfolders ticked in my Poweramp settings). So, for example, music for my 3 year old is mixed with baroque chamber music which is mixed with romantic opera all in alphabetical order. Anyway, I'm asking whether anyone here knows how to get poweramp to work like my SBs. (FYI I have done everything I can do via the settings in poweramp; I haven't yet searched far and wide on the Poweramp forums because I don't really understand much of what they are on about over there and was hoping people here might be able to speak my lingo. chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106240 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Streaming music to SB without internet connection
Sorry for this basic question, but I have just moved and the internet is taking an interminable amount of time to connect. While I am waiting I'm wondering if I can set up my wifi modem/router in the house and just stream music to my SB duet in the normal way? Or do I need an internet connection to get viable wifi network running in the premises? (I can set up the router via wifi so there is a network of sorts already). chopinhauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32453 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106022 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
