Re: [slim] Duet Controller artwork quality - no dithering done?

2008-03-09 Thread dean blackketter
Thanks for the pictures. I'm playing with it in photoshop and put
your image up on the Controller screen.

I see a couple of things:

1. The color banding effects are strong with this particular image.
I was able to reproduce the color pattern closely in photoshop with 32
levels of posterization (approximately 555 encoding). The quality of
the image is definitely improved with a 565 dither.

2. The photo you took appears to be taken from slightly above
perpendicular to the screen. The viewing angle on the Controller LCD
is better from the natural angle when holding the device in your hand,
slightly _below_ perpendicular. I was able to verify that the image
looks a much better when viewed normally in the hand.

So the takeaway is that we can do better by doing a proper dither on
the device from 888 to 565. Also, the viewing angle matters.

The current setup software on the Controller doesn't let you configure

As has been discussed in other threads, Robin is working on a

You choose the Receiver on the screen of the Controller and it

I've no doubt there are some very worried people over at Sonos HQ!

Looking through the specs (under the System requirements
 '_on_this_page_' (http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_duet.html)) I see
you're quoting 256MB of RAM as a requirement. Is that number correct?
If it is, I guess I need to factor in the cost of a new host if I'm
going to get the Duet since my trusty QNAP is not gonna make the grade
 :-(
The new hardware doesn't add any new requirements to your host setup,
but running SqueezeCenter 7.0 might. I don't know the status of
running SC7 on QNAP, but if it runs well there, then the new hardware
should work fine.

When playing, the LED is white. When in standby it's significantly

you could hide it in a cabinet or even put a bit tape over it for

As you surmised, the Squeezebox Controller (the remote formerly known as
Jive) will list for $299US, and the Squeezebox Receiver (formerly known as
Ray) will be $149.

The bundle of the two is called Squeezebox Duet and will list for $399US.
For the time being, you'll need to have at least one Controller to set up a
Receiver. That's a limit of the current software.

And as Mike said, this isn't Squeezebox 4, but compliments the classic
Squeezebox.

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

2008-01-05 Thread dean blackketter
To clear up a little bit about the new product announcement.

There are two new hardware products, the Squeezebox Receiver and the
Squeezebox Controller. These are available separately, but when
bought together the bundle is called Squeezebox Duet.

Squeezebox Receiver is based on the existing Squeezebox 2/3 hardware
platform with the same amount of memory, CPU speed, wireless card,
etc. In fact the firmware that's running on it is essentially the
same as on the classic Squeezebox. It lacks a headphone jack and
uses a different (but quite good) DAC. In place of a VFD display it
has a single button with an RGB LED behind it. The color of that
button is under software control and indicates if the device is
connected and working properly. The button acts as a pause/unpause
control, or if you press and hold, puts the Receiver into setup mode.

Squeezebox Controller is exactly the same hardware that folks from
the community have been testing under the code-name Jive Hardware
Beta, as discussed here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/
forumdisplay.php?f=19

It's based on an entirely new ARM-based hardware architecture and a
new software platform which has been under development as the Jive
software and will be renamed SqueezeOS.

The Controller uses its built-in 802.11g wireless to talk to
SqueezeCenter and/or SqueezeNetwork as an alternative way to control
your Squeezeboxen or Transporter and has nice 2.4 display and enough
buttons to navigate and play your music on your other devices.

The Controller also has a small built-in speaker and headphone jack
which are used for sound effects for the user interface. Future
software updates could make the Controller a player itself, streaming
your music (or any of the internet radio or music services on
SqueezeNetwork) to the headphone jack. If and when that software
update happens, the Duet bundle would be like getting two players in
one box.

There's also an SD card slot in the unit, an IR transmitter, a 3-axis
accelerometer and an expansion port on the bottom. What software
features get added depends largely on what the community comes up
with, there's already a bunch of neat applets and other software that
have been created during the beta program.

I'm REALLY excited about these new products. Folks have been asking
for a couple of new products from us for a while: a less expensive
Squeezebox and a remote with a display. We did that.

But it gets better. The Squeezebox Controller is based on a totally
new and open platform for software development. In the same way that
SqueezeCenter (nee SlimServer) was a platform for our community to
create new ways of listening to music, Squeezebox Controller and
SqueezeOS are platforms for building new ways of controlling your
music and more.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

At the risk of getting whacked on the head by our sales team, I
_think_ the price will be $29. They cost a lot more to manufacture

POP!

There are a couple of things we're hoping to do for SqueezeNetwork/
SlimServer integration:

1. Sync settings favorites. Things like alarm clocks, display
settings, screen saver, etc. should only need to be set once.
Favorite radio stations can be synced, but obviously local music
favorites won't be synced.

2. Make it easier to switch between SqueezeNetwork and SlimServer.
Making it easier to switch players between the two via the remote,
web interface and API.

3. Make it easier to understand. It should be easier to sign up for
SqueezeNetwork, more obvious what system you are connected, and the
language used clearer and consistent.

4. We've also talked about automatically switching a player between
the two when your computer becomes available and unavailable. This
will be the trickiest bit, since we don't want jump the player around
unexpectedly.

These discussions on the forums are a big help in figuring out what's
most important to do and how to approach it.

1) How will we be able to select, say a DVD player, that is connected

Yes. There will be a menu choice in SlimServer and the top-level
setup menu to switch between the digital inputs.

2) Will we be able to create a soft label on the Transporter's
display to say DVD, or SACD Player or will the input selection
display have to read Coax S/PDIF etc.?
I don't think this idea has come up before, but it's a good one! I'm
not sure it'll happen for the initial release, but is certainly
possible in a future software update.

3) Will any given Transporter digital outputs be able to be selected
as a Servo Output - outputting what the Transporter is receiving
from

it's ethernet ports?
All of the outputs will have the same data on them, namely what is
decoded from the CPU.

4) Will any given Transporter digital output be able to be
selected as

a #8220;Tape Loop#8221; type output - which is to say whatever input
is selected will be looped through this output when configured as a
Tape Loop?
I believe that when you switch to one of the digital inputs, it will
automatically be passed through to the digital outs. It should be
possible to disable the digital out too.

Finally, I am amazed at how responsive and clever Slim Devices is
proving to be as it listens to it's customers and designed it's last
two products; A $300 entry level Network Music Player and a $2K
audiophile Network Media Player + external DAC w/ super low jitter +
Digital Pre-Amp w/ short audio paths and Jung based power supplies
is a

nice year's work.

Thanks so much!

so it doesn't dim?

Thanks for any help,
grimholtz

Look elsewhere. Maybe something like: http://www.olive.us/

Now, now, JJZolx... :)

The easiest thing to get started is to take an inexpensive computer
running iTunes (or your favorite music ripping app). Dell Windows
PCs are remarkably cheap and easy to get going.

Rip your music.

Install SlimServer.

Stick it in a closet, connected to a wireless access point.

Hook up a Squeezebox at your stereo.

Enjoy.

Soon you'll realize that you NEED this in the other rooms around the
house, then order another Squeezebox for the kitchen or the bedroom.

1. I don't use iTunes and plugin is disabled - doesn't solve the
problem

2. I'm trying both wireless and wired network - still have the problem

3. I've completely removed and reinstalled slim server - still have
problem

4. I've installed slim server on another computer, disabled ALL
plugins

and internet plugins - still have the same problem

5. This doesn't happen when playing squeezeNetwork - that is all fine

6. When connected to slimserver and switch off - I get the clock,
which

then shows the same problem - freezes after awhile, screen goes blank,
after 20 secs comes back again. This is in a 'switched off' state.

I'm starting to think this is a hardware problem...
