I'd likely find the software lacking, as is the case with every other
product I've seen to date (other than SB), but I'm officially putting
 Beep on my watch list.

Time to resurrect.

I received my Beep before the holidays, and just a few days ago, was
added to the test group for DLNA. It's a nice device, connects via
optical to my system, and has good sound quality. In order to access my
local library via DLNA, I am using MiniDLNA server on an Ubuntu box, and
the Android app BubbleUPNP.

Since Beep is a DLNA/UPNP device, I am still hoping that the people at
Beep will add control functionality to the Beep via LMS. In the
meantime, I wonder if there is a way to get playback from it with LMS?

[slim] New Device - Beep

2014-02-06 Thread djfake

Just saw an article on Engadget for Beep, Looks interesting...

Launching today, the tiny dial works like a Chromecast for your
speakers, and lets you cast tunes from your mobile device over Wi-Fi --
and with none of the range restrictions that affect Bluetooth-based
devices. The creation of two ex-Android engineers, the project has
financial backing from big names like David Dolby and Alexis Ohanian.

[slim] squeezebox constantly rebuffers when playing flac

2010-08-10 Thread djfake

Recently, and I apologize for not knowing exactly when, my squeezebox
can no longer play FLAC files - they constantly rebuffer. Please note
that _NOTHING_ in my system has changed for quite sometime _OTHER_ than
squeezeboxserver software.

I just reinstalled squeezeboxserver, deleting
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache prefs after uninstalling.

Does anyone know of a fix? A way to debug? This is very disconcerting.
thanks

the Squeezebox Touch, reviews of the Squeezebox Radio, Android, and this
post http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=490916postcount=76 ,
I can't help but feel that at some point in the future, my SB3 Classic
will be left in the proverbial dust.

If I am not mistaken, slimserver/squeezecenter has always published
under the GNU license, thus a fork to maintain the software free of
logitech is possible. This however could affect any firmware updates to
my SB3, since it is proprietary.

Should I fear for the future?

am surprised that more people on the list are not critical of Logitech
for not making the SBR a stand alone product, and indeed defensive

Simple enough?

Treat them badly.. I don't think so. But moreover, I fail to see why
you are excluding me as part of this community. Although I am not a
developer, I have been using the Squeezebox and Slimserver for almost
five years. I have purchased two units, including one since Logitech
purchased Slimdevices. I even got into Linux because of Slimserver. I
have demonstrated to friends who in turn have purchased this product.
Guaranteed I love my Squeezebox as much as anyone else on this forum.
Why you even have a quote from me on the testimonials page.

:)

Now please make plans on creating a stand-alone SBR. And I really will
pipe down now (and apologies to all the others here for my rants). And
if you send me (or allow me to purchase) a SBR, I'll be the first one
to beta test Robin's plugin. And and advocate, too!

Okay, Logitech's first priority was to sell the duet combo. But if
Logitech wanted, they could have created the SBR to configure itself
via wired ethernet. So a conscious decision was made by someone to
create the SBR to require the SBC for configuration.

That's a matter of priorities. They'll first sell the combo, which
doesn't require a wired setup feature.

I don't want to start a flame war and certainly don't mean this as

  confused...

Because SD/Logitech SMS actually respond to their users. Those of us
who've been around here for a long time like me, have seen this in
progress. People asked for a cheaper displayless SB and they got it.
They asked for a Sonos type remote and they got it. I reported a bug on
the Controller interface yesterday, it was fixed today. I know of no
software or hardware company that is so responsive to its users. I
appreciate that and I really hate seeing idiots who just entered this
forum and start kicking around - usually because they have some problem
with their wireless network that's got nothing to do with their
musicplayers or they don't understand the principles behind the design
 - and accusing the products of being shit, the people who make them of
being stupid and the people who appreciate both of being apologetic
 fanboys.

 Regards,
 Peter

For the record, I have been using Slimdevices products for nearly five
years. Got a lot better things to do with my time than read posts like
this.

By cheaper displayless SB do you mean the SBR? If it requires the SBC
to use, then it isn't really cheaper, is it?

Thanks for letting me know what you think. As a user of Slim Devices
for almost five years now, I too, was letting you know what I think.

For a lot of years, people have been asking - myself included - for a
no display, low cost Squeezebox. From the initial press release of the
Duet, I thought this came true. But after using this forum, I realized
that Logitech left out one part - the ability to configure the SBR
without the SBC. That's too bad, because my wish - and probably many
others - then didn't come true.

Many of us have been using Squeeze products before Logitech bought
Slim. Many of us remember the one-on-one emails with developers and
tech support, and personal communication with Sean Adams. It's easy to
wave communities and open source and probably even a good thing to
do so. But even some of your most ardent fans can also be some of your
most ardent critics. I hope Logitech sees the strength in all this.

My hat'll be off to Robin for delivering a plugin that will allow one
to enjoy the Squeeze experience for an entry price of $149.

These so-called fanboys or apologists are actually just people who
like (or often love) the Squeezebox for what it does for them--let's
them listen to the music they love, when, where, and how they would
like--and want to share that with other people. They value their
ability to speak directly to us, value each other, and are, therefore,
usually not very agreeable when people post insulting or rude
 comments.

I think it is important that you realize they make the products better
for YOU by providing constant feedback (both positive and negative) to
us, by supporting you when you ask questions here, and by
testing/reporting bugs/etc. I sincerely hope they have a thick enough
skin to deal with the thinly-disguised insult of being labelled as
 nothing more than fanboys.

Jim - was this really necessary to direct at me? I never used the word
fanboy in any of my communique, and I don't think I ever digressed
into anything remotely personal or negative for that matter. Quite
disappointing to read from someone in your position.

The part where the guy from Logitech says it can only be configured via

knows less than posters on this forum? If so, my apologies.

Yeah, cough is right. Why can't you configure it via wired ethernet?
Most every network device embeds something to do this - I have a NAS
device that does this.

Okay, Logitech's first priority was to sell the duet combo. But if
Logitech wanted, they could have created the SBR to configure itself
via wired ethernet. So a conscious decision was made by someone to
create the SBR to require the SBC for configuration.

I don't want to start a flame war and certainly don't mean this as

Logitech? Is the community getting paid to develop the product? Or is
Logitech using the community to develop a commercial product? I'm all
confused...

Forcing particular answers doesn't always get you the information you

Yes you can connect a SBR by ethernet though you currently must first
configure it using a Squeezebox Controller (SBC).

If you buy just a SBR and do not have a SBC you will not be able to do
anything with the SBR it is a paperweight. This may change in the
future. The SBR requires a SBC to configure it before it can talk on a
 network wireless or wired.

Well the first question is then definitely FALSE. One cannot just buy
the SBR and expect to use it like the old Squeezebox.

1. False - To configure the SBR, you must have the SBC.

So you can buy as many SBRs as you want, but none of them will work
without purchasing or using an SBC first.

Logitech - this stinks. Why will you not sell a reasonably priced
hardware device for use with Slimserver? All I need is a wired-only, no
display device.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

Well, I've trudged through these posts looking for answers to the
following

True or False:
I can buy a Squeezebox Receiver for $149, connect it via wired ethernet
to my home network, and use Slimserver software to play music through
it.

True or False:
If I buy a Squeezebox Receiver, and do NOT buy the Squeezebox
Controller, I will NOT be able to access the Squeezebox Receiver via
wireless.

Yeah, many people seem to feel that way. I don't care at all for the
actual media. As soon as I buy or am given a CD it gets ripped to FLAC
and the original gets banished to some cardboard box in the loft.

You'd have to delete any music you ripped if you sold any of the
original CDs. . .

No, I'm really a snob. I want one with the Slimdevices logo.

But your point is well taken. Committing to Squeezebox v3 Slimserver

Go ahead, order it. You know you want it. Especially if that SB1 does
not have the 1G bitmapped display. I was pleasantly surprised how
much better the SB2/SB3 display is than the SB1G display; I can't
imagine using a SB1 or SliMP3 text-only display all the time!

Okay I ordered it!

I did get an email from Slimdevices stating the units would be logo'd
with the Slim brand. The big selling points for me was:

+ Price: $229 (white on sale plus return user discount)
+ better display - the v1 _is_ hard to read across the room!
+ 802.11g networking w/WPA
+ Burr-Brown DAC
+ Much larger buffer for FLAC

I would like to point out that one of the things I love about
Slimserver Squeezebox is the community around it. I've always had
good support from Slim, and always found Slim users to be very
congenial and helpful. A nice club if you will. It's probably why
many of us are worried about the change with Logitech. No disrespect to
Logitech, but big companie$ always tend to me$$ up a good thing. I think
many share this sentiment...

The point about the logo is easy - I've been using Slim for just over
three years. I love it. So yes, I want to be reminded that I have a
Slimdesign Squeezebox, and not Logitech Squeezebox.

~
Now Logitech - make an inexpensive no wireless, no display version of
the Squeezebox!

[slim] To upgrade or not to upgrade?

2007-04-10 Thread djfake

I have a Squeezebox that's a little over three (3) years old. I guess it
is a v1 - it has a firmware of 40? Can anyone confirm this? thanks!

I'm considering purchasing a new one while it's still branded
Slimdesign, but trying to justify my purchase: With the new one I get

+ WPA/2 Security
+ 24bit Brown-Burr DAC
+ True 802.11 g Wireless ??? Doe I have this?
+ Upgraded display to bitmap
+ Wireless bridge

Anything else I'm missing? Thanks!
