Re: [slim] Is the SB3 still available?
Wow. I thought the touch was not available yet. It is surprising that production would be cut off before the replacement was available, especially, right before Christmas. I'm in the US. I wonder if there are some SB3 classics available here for a discount. The classic squeezebox is what originally drove my interest in this product line. I had been hoping Logitech might ramp up the volumes and get costs down to $150 or so. Streaming capability is now being built into receivers. I would think this would make the $300 price range a difficult market for squeezeboxes. I'd have a half dozen squeezeboxes at $150 rather than just the couple I own now. I do enjoy the ones I have very much. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71997 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is the SB3 still available?
Yes, I haven't played with receiver streaming yet but did see that it was available at least on some yamaha equipment. That must be an expensive display but it does look good. Being able to browse my library without having a tv to display everything was another criteria for my original purchase. The Duet concept is ok but I still like to have the display on the unit. Although, Ipeng has been a very nice addition to the classic model as well. It sounds like the touch is probably the way to go. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71997 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is the SB3 still available?
My music server runs on a 10 year old Pentium II machine. I had to change to linux but it still works fine. I'm sure it's not the processor that will present a long term reliability problem for squeezebox players. I don't know the reliability numbers for the types of displays used on the transporter or SB3 but I would guess they would be one of the lower reliability parts in the device. Unfortunately, there are a lot of devices that end up not being manufactured for 10 years. This is probably even more true if the part isn't used by several manufacturers in various kinds of products. It would be nice if logitech could take a crack at the reliablility statistics knowing the number of units in the field and do a last time buy for support purposes. I wouldn't want to be a customer service person telling transporter customers their 4 year old unit can't be repaired. Many appliances don't get repaired because the basic cost of any repair is more than the cost of a new unit. This is true for a $50 toaster but not for a $2000 transporter. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71997 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Is the SB3 still available?
I was surprised to find the SB3 missing from the player list on the logitech squeezebox website. Is SB3 obsolete or is it still available? If it's available, can it still be purchased directly or only through resellers? Re: [slim] Internet Radio
Yes, I installed softsqueeze version 1:1.0-relsvn20070225-0.3etch1. With a version number like that, how could it not work! I can't explain why kera started working on my SB3 after the installation. I tried it several times before and it failed. Originally it did work fine but only over Squeeze Network. When it was failing on the SB3, it seemed to have trouble transitioning from the station introduction to actually playing the stream. Now I notice that there is no station introduction that gets played, it just goes right to the main stream. Could the AlienBBC intstallation help with this somehow? I played around with the full list of local internet radio stations last night. All of the ones that worked were mp3 or a .m3u file. The troublesome stations were all listed as wma. The server seems to think it has connected with the station. Even softsqueeze seems somewhat fooled because there is no longer an error message and the timer is incrementing as if something is playing. Out of many tries and a number of stations, I did get one station to play that was listed as a wma. When I tried the same station later it wouldn't work again. This morning I can't get KERA to play through softsqueeze and it worked fine last night. All still works on my SB3. I've never had trouble with softsqueeze before but I really only used it for playing from my local music library. I wonder if it is a timing issue and maybe my old machine is a little to slow. The cpu utilization looks fine but memory is tight. I'm still hoping there is a software issue that can be resolved. Does the extension plugin or AlienBBC have any version requirements for linux packages? Softsqueeze works so well with my local libraries. Upgrading to Squeezecenter 7.3.2 motivated me to learn some new tricks with this toy. I connected with my University radio station this week that I haven't heard in 25 years. The internet radio stuff is fun and it would be nice if softsqueeze could play it too. Re: [slim] Internet Radio
I just found a thread dated 12/14/2008 that discusses a problem similar to mine where softsqueeze will not stream internet radio stations but the hardware squeezeboxes will play fine. The thread talks about whether softsqueeze can play wma files or not and says that if squeeze center is installed on linux it won't play wma files. My setup has squeeze center installed on linux but softsqueeze is installed on windows xp. Is there something I need to do to get softsqueeze to stream internet radio stations that are wma encoded? I'm not sure how to tell if the stations that won't play are wma encoded but since the error message is unable to play file type for station stream this sure sounds like it could be the problem. If the softsqueeze wma issue is my problem, do I need to install something in windows xp for softsqueeze or do I need to install something in linux for squeezecenter? -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60471 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Internet Radio
I guess I did a very poor job of searching for posts on this issue before I posted. Please accept my apologies. There is a thread started on 2/2/2009 concerning softsqueeze problems with wma streams. Andy G responded that squeezecenter must be running on a windows machine for softsqueeze to be able to play wma streams. Is there really no way to install a package in linux to get squeezecenter to perform wma transcoding to allow softsqueeze to play wma streams? -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60471 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Internet Radio
Thanks for the reply. I would have never imagined from reading the alienBBC info and mplayer description that this would solve the wma issue. It looks easy enough to install so I will give it a try tomorrow. If fast systems are a problem with the wma streams it shouldn't affect me. I'm running debian etch on a 400MHz Pentium II. This machine has run my slimserver without problems for several years and I'm hoping to eek out another year or two. I'll let you know if this works. Re: [slim] Internet Radio
I installed mplayer and AlienBBC as suggested. The installation seems to have affected both softsqueeze and my hardware player (squeezebox3). My hardware player can now play our local Dallas PBS radio station KERA 90.1. Previously this did not work unless I went through the Squeeze Network menu. It can also still play all of the other local Dallas radio stations provided in the internet radio menu. Softsqueeze can also play KERA 90.1 now. Softsqueeze still cannot play any of the other local radio stations provided in the internet radio menu. However, I no longer get the error message Problem: Unable to play file for: Stream. It now appears to think the stream is ok but no sound comes out. One observation is that I don't see the word connecting flash once as the stream is trying to connect. Something is still not quite right. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60471 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Internet Radio
I recently upgraded to Squeeze Center 7.3.2 (from version 6.5) and the installation seems to have gone well (other than loosing my preferences). However, I have come across two problems detailed below: 1. I've been playing with listening to some internet radio stations as I manually redo my favorites list. One station I used to listen to is a public radio station in Dallas, TX: KERA 90.1. When I try to listen to this station over Internet Radio via Squeeze Center on my squeezebox, I hear a thank you for tuning in but the station never plays. Curriously, the station plays fine if I go through Squeeze Network. Other radio stations I've tried through internet radio seem to work fine. Is there something I can configure differently to fix this? Why would it play through Squeeze Network but not through my local Squeeze Center server? Since I just upgraded, I would have thought that differences between Squeeze Center and Squeeze Network would be minimal. This station used to work with my old slimserver version 6.5, although, it has been some time since I've listened to it. 2. My second problem has to do with softsqueeze and internet radio stations. After upgrading Squeeze Center as described above, I clicked on the softsqueeze link under extras in squeeze center to upgrade softsqueeze. Softsqueeze upgraded itself to version 3.7 from version 3.4. I seem to be able to play music from my library just fine but most internet radio stations will not play. I get an error from softsqueeze that says: Problem: Unable to play file for: Stream. There are many stations that play fine on the squeezebox but won't play on softsqueeze. I did find a couple stations that would play on both. I think I saw somewhere that there is a new soft player available but couldn't seem to find it on the logitech website where softsqueeze could be found. Do I need to change to the new player? If so, where do I find it? Thanks in advance for any help. Re: [slim] Internet Radio and Live365
Thanks for the reply. I will update to the latest release of slimserver. If the fixes get released to squeeze network first, how does the squeeze network log on to live365 such that live365 will not ask the user to log on? I'm pretty new to the squeeze network facility so I don't quite understand if there is a place I need to enter my live365 user id and password for use by squeeze network. Will this show up in the squeezebox player configuration menus after I upgrade to the latest slimserver and player firmware? For slimserver acess to live365 there is a place for this but as I mentioned, the version of slimserver I have doesn't seem to connect correctly. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37372 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Internet Radio and Live365
I just purchased a new Squeezebox3 and have really been enjoying it. Plugged it into my network and in a few minutes music was playing. Getting a second box motivated me to play with some of the internet radio features which is where I'm having a little trouble. I'm trying to play some stations from live365 and experienced the following: 1. Played some live365 through squeeze network. Some stations played, others said I needed to log in. I've obtained a login ID from live365 but am not sure how to use the id through squeeze network. Also, played the same radio station on two squeeze boxes. This worked but there was noticeable delay between the boxes. I kind of expected this since it seems to work as two separate connections to the internet instead of being sync'd to a single stream. 2. Tried to play live365 through internet radio which I believe is via slimserver (please let me know if this isn't true). This is what I would really like to do because I believe I'll be able to play a radio stations through two squeezeboxes and have them synced without too much delay. I put my live365 id and password into the live365 slimserver internet radio section. I then browsed the internet radio menu and tried a live365 station. The squeezebox indicated it was connecting but music never began streaming. The box did seem to know what song it was trying to play. I'm stuck at this point. I'm still running version 6.5.0 slimserver. I noticed there were some live365 fixes in newer servers but I also thought folks were running live365 in earlier versions so I figured I might be doing something wrong. 6.5.0 has been working well for everything else I've been doing so I never bothered to upgrade. Any help would be much appreciated. [slim] Re: play request goes to save playlist
I put in new batteries and upgraded the slimserver software to version 6.5.0 for debian. The remote problem was still present. I noticed a comment in the release notes for 6.5.0 about a change made concerning remote button pushing time and heavy fingered users. I then tried pushing and releasing the play button very quickly and so far this fixes the problem. I've also had some problems with the fast forward/skip function but pushing/releasing these buttons quickly seems to solve that issue as well. When the play button didn't react as initially described, the natural tendency was to push it harder which held it down longer making the problem worse. I can see why the fast forward/skip buttons have a time contraint because their function changes as a result of hold down time. I would expect the play button to be less sensitive to time. I don't even know if it should ever go to save playlist as a result of pushing the play button. I'll check the documentation on this one. I really have to make an effort to release the button quickly to make it work correctly. Although it's certainly usable this way, I would like to have it feel a little more natural for pushing a remote button and am surprised no one else has experienced this. Hopefully it will keep working and this is not just a fluke. So far so good. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the reply. It is good to know that play is supposed to work this way; I just need to be a little quicker fingered. It might be nice to be able to configure the button press delay like you can for mouse button double clicks and such. I'm just happy it seems to be working correctly. -- eschurig eschurig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2175 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] play request goes to save playlist
I am having problems with my Squeezebox 2 play button. Many times when I push play after browsing for the artist I want to listen to, nothing happens. Sometimes when I push play a second time, the selected music begins to play. Other times, subsequent pushes of the play button result in going to the save playlist menu. I can back out of the menu and push play again and it goes back into the save playlist menu again. If I fiddle with the thing by pushing stop, play, and moving around in menus, pretty soon I get it to work. There are also times when I turn on the squeezebox and it seems to work perfectly. The problem occurs very frequently when a song is playing and I try to play a different song in the playlist. I have softsqueeze running on another PC and do not ever see this problem when playing music using softsqueeze. My current setup has slimserver running on a Debian Linux box: SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 8806 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1. Firmware version 59 is running on the squeezebox 2. However, I have also seen the problem occur when running the server on Windows XP (slimserver version 6.2.0). I know there is newer software/firmware available and plan to upgrade, however, since this problem existed across two OS's, two slimserver version levels, and does not occur when using softsqueeze, I didn't think a software upgrade was going to help. I love having my music available with the push of a remote button and would like to put several squeezeboxes aroundthe house. Getting them for my kids will prevent my CD collection from being destroyed. Unfortunately, my family is relunctant to use the thing when it acts strangely so I need to get this problem solved.
