[slim] Serious question about current quality

2010-04-16 Thread herbman

Hey all,

I've had a slimp3 since sometime in 2003, running some late 4.x server
and updating regularly to my current 7.5 install on linux. I've been
keeping my eyes open for quite a while, thinking about when to upgrade.
I've been considering the boom, the radio, the touch for a bit, but I
hold reservations about current quality.

I know back in the day (slimp3, sb1(no g, g), etc.) that many people
would have issues with the server responses, etc.. but as an
experienced user/sysadmin-type I could always work with whatever. With
the motion towards the player-side thicker logic, it seems that the
general quality level is a bit more challenged these days.

My question: For slim-experienced and generally technically capable
folks, are the new devices production-stable enough for daily use?
Which is best? I'd be inclined to think the boom just from its legacy
design sw-wise. Do people feel that the boom will be on its way out
soon to be replaced by a similar squeezeplay-based device? I don't want
to get a boom and then have it feel like a stepchild in 1-2 releases,
but I'd prefer it over radio for the sound quality.

Since I already have the slimp3 in the living room, this next one would
be more likely a bedroom or kitchen purchase.

Re: [slim] Serious question about current quality

2010-04-16 Thread herbman

I guess my primary concern is that I seem to get some willies about
depending on a squeezeplay device, since everything seems so shaky
right now. I know with the boom i'd get my reliable and familiar
experience, but the newer features of the GUIs tempt.

I think if I had to make a purchase right now it would be the boom, but
I'm inclined to stay on the sidelines a little longer and see how well
the squeezeplay-platform devices stabilize. If something boom-sized and
boom-sound-quality came out with a (matured) squeezeplay interface, that
would be the ideal for me.

For many people, the relevant quality factor is sound quality. While
you've been waiting on the sidelines, many increasingly capable and
excellent versions of these devices have provided great service to a
 lot of people.

The product you have would be unacceptable to most people these days.
I'm not sure what you're waiting for and frankly I suspect it's not so
 clear to you either.

My device doesn't give me the willies because it's proven over the long
term, so it's not a consideration that it would stop working unless
something finally fries or the server support drops. You're correct in
the fact that I'm not 100% sure what I'm waiting for either, but this
was an attempt to get a feel from more experienced users over the years
about the current state of things, in context. I could look at all the
negative posts and conclude that things are bad, but I know better from
both my knowledge of the product history and my awareness of internet
forums.

I'm detecting a small note of hostility in some of these responses. I'm
really just asking some questions and expressing some concerns; there's
no need to jump on me for it. I was an early supporter and will likely
be a future supporter, I'm just trying to get a grasp on the best
timing for what will work for me.

Re: [slim] Woeful sync SB3 Boom - just me?

2010-03-26 Thread herbman

I can't recommend this NTP server enough:
http://www.meinberg.de/english/sw/ntp.htm

It disables the (crappy) windows time service, sets up a port of the
real NTP, and its own user, and comes with a great list of pre-defined
server pools.

Hello,

First, please understand this is NOT an official support forum, just a
forum frequented by fans of the devices and some of the staff. You'll
have much better luck with the support phone number and e-mail
address.

Secondly, I have Verizon FIOS with an actiontec router. I'm using this
for wireless as well as my main gateway, and my slim setup is perfect
on it. I have a slimp3 connected to a Netgear wireless game adapter
with no problems, and I use things like Pandora all the time from it,
also with no problems.

Could you detail what *specific* problems you're having? Your tone
doesn't suggest someone who wants this to work, rather someone who
wants to complain and stamp his/her feet.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox connected directly to PC with wireless card

2009-02-03 Thread herbman

Instead of creating an ad-hoc computer wireless network try this:

Go to the 'sharing' option under the system preferences, and choose to
share your ethernet internet connection with users on airport. You can
define a network name and password here.

That should do it!

Re: [slim] How to play .asf file in SB3?

2009-02-03 Thread herbman

Using .asf with audio only (in a windows media codec) is like using .mov
with audio only (in an aac codec). I think the SW should support it.

[slim] duplicate artists in sc7

2008-03-05 Thread herbman

Hey y'all,

I'm seeing duplicate artists in my main artists list in sc7. I didn't
see them in 6.5.4. I did *not* migrate my preferences on purpose so I
could get a fresh setup, fresh scan, etc. Is there a setting I missed
or some file I can provide?

Running on linux with the default TGZ release and the bundled mysql.

Re: [slim] silly question: slimp3 and squeezenetwork?

2008-03-05 Thread herbman

I realize that SC7 works just fine, I'm using it and have been using
pre-5.0 slimserver versions and on with my device. It just won't die,
so I can't get a WA for the duet!

I wasn't able to find any of the 'add player' business in the sc7 menus
for my slimp3 to get PINs, etc. for the SN site.

How are the SN features to be used with the slimp3?

[slim] Everything is running fine!!

2007-02-24 Thread herbman

I figured this forum could use a message like this. Please list
slimserver specs and library specs if everything is fine for you!

Device: Original SliMP3
Library: 3722 albums with 50888 songs by 1257 artists
SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - RedHat - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.6 i386-linux-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.21-standard

Athlon XP 1700+, 512M RAM, running Fedora Core 3
Music Storage is 4 * 250GB Hitachi SATA on a HighPoint 1640 RAID-5
Controller

I play music all the time, and am currently enjoying Global
Communication's lovely ambience. No stutters, *ever*. Using a netgear
wge111 to talk 802.11g over WPA to a linksys wrt54G that the server is
wired to.

The MySQL 5.x work with SlimServer 6.5 has made a huge difference from
the SQlite days, and obviously light years from the 5.x stuff.

Kudos, slim team and thanks! I wish my device would break so I had an
excuse to get a sb3 (or whatever's next!)

Re: [slim] maybe silly CLI question

2007-02-12 Thread herbman

digging around, i realized i can just run:

# scanner.pl --rescan --progress /dir/with/new/stuff
Very nice. Unfortunately, one of the things in that dir got re-tagged
and now i have duplicates of tracks in that album. Any idea of how to
get rid of those without either doing a full rescan or manually hitting
the database?

[slim] Re: AsyncHTTP errors

2006-07-14 Thread herbman

This may be out of context, but why isn't the code using the system
default host resolution paths? Most applications should be able to use
the system paths (I know linux uses nsswitch.conf for example) so that
you can fall back on whats known to work? If files don't have it, then
go to dns, etc..

[slim] Re: 'Browse Artists' always starts at the top of the list (slimp3)

2006-07-07 Thread herbman

no, this is when using the player like normal.
A typical usage:
Turn on slimp3, go to browse music, browse artists
navigate to artist, album, (song maybe), hit play button
Hit now playing on remote, then go back to browse music and artists and
the list will be at the top again, at 'Various Artists'

[slim] 'Browse Artists' always starts at the top of the list (slimp3)

2006-07-06 Thread herbman

I've filed this as http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3704

It seems that in 6.3.0, every time I go to the 'Browse Artists' list,
it's at the top. Previous releases would keep the last position of the
list cached. Anyone else see this with the other players?

If there's debugging output I can provide, let me know.
