Also keeping an eye on this. But $119 per year is pretty steep for

Forget genre - that turned out not to be the issue, but the folder
location of the files is.

I doubt I'm in a 1% minority. True enough, most of my real albums are
stored in the same directory (except when I have downloaded one or two
tracks then later downloaded the rest of the album on the strength of
those), but I also like to collect tracks together and tag it with the
same Album name so that it will appear as an album eg. Mozart is the
artist, Concertos is the album - and these are rarely if ever in the
same folder (and I don't want to have to move them - iTunes wouldn't
find them).

Whole-heartedly disagree.

I'm a developer myself, and our happiness is not the issue, a product

some rule rigid so that it only satisfies half the customers, even if
it makes things simpler, is not good practice. And the rule of thumb on
introducing a new option - make what it did before the default.

As it is, I won't be using the SlimServer web interface since browsing
of albums is such a pain; I'm writing my own interface that builds it's
own database. I'll have to put up with duplicates in browsing via the
remote I suppose.

[slim] Slimserver seems to break albums by genre

2008-01-16 Thread jezbo

If I have one album, but the songs are tagged with different genres,
slimserver seems to create two or more different albums, one per genre.
Is there any way I can have it ignore genre in album accumulation ?

2008-01-16 Thread jezbo

Oh hang on, it may be breaking it because the files are split across
directories - I've seen some other threads on this. Is there any
resolution to this yet ?

[slim] Cannot find DHCP server

2007-09-10 Thread jezbo

My squeezebox used to run perfectly with no problems. Now it seems I
have to fight with it for half an hour whenever I want to play any
music, which hardly makes it worth it.

My main problem at the moment seems to be finding a DHCP server. It
finds the wireless network fine but then can't find the server. The
only thing I've changed recently is to add a range expander to my
wireless network, and this is closer to the squeezebox than the base
router, could this be an issue?. Having said that, I'm sure it's been
working since installing this device.

Even if I accept the suggested fixed IP, I can only see a slim server
attached to my NAS box (a QNAP TS101). I can't see the slimserver
running on my laptop. This severely restricts my playing options.

Any advice ?

[slim] Cannot see one particular slimserver - why?

2007-09-10 Thread jezbo

I have 3 slimservers on my network, two on laptops and one on a NAS. No
matter what I do my Squeezebox can't seem to see one of my laptop
servers (the one I mostly used til a few days ago!). Tried rebooting
everything, connecting via the IP directly, and nothing.

Any ideas anyone ?

Re: [slim] Cannot see one particular slimserver - why?

2007-09-10 Thread jezbo

There is VPN software on it which prevents access to network resources
from the laptop, but only while it is connected to my company LAN. Even
when VPN is turned off I can't access the slimserver from the SB.

Actually that's a good call. I checked the VPN software and there was a
setting Stateful Firewall turned on. I turned this off and suddenly I
see the slimserver! Thanks so much.

[slim] Press and Hold BRIGHTNESS to begin

2007-08-21 Thread jezbo

Seems I'm forced to do a firmware upgrade to my Squeezebox (with the
above prompt) every few days, when I connect to a slimserver. Is this
normal? It's bl**dy annoying! I connect to up to 3 different
slimservers, could each one be forcing an overwrite of the last? Why
would they want different versions?

Re: [slim] Press and Hold BRIGHTNESS to begin

2007-08-21 Thread jezbo

I have two laptops running slimserver 6.5.4, and a QNAP TS-101 NAS box
running SS 6.5.1 - I can't find a way (yet) to upgrade this to 6.5.4, I
dont think it's been made available by the QNAP people. So that's why I
have a version mismatch. I'll try the bypass tho - thanks.

[slim] UNC paths and NOT drive mappings ?

2007-03-02 Thread jezbo

Am I right in saying that when your songs are on a network drive and not
on the same PC, SlimServer can ONLY deal with UNC paths
(//qnap/Public/music) and NOT drive mappings (H:/music). Certainly it
wont accept the H:/ form for the Music Folder in Server Settings
(reports Oops - H:/music doesn't seem to be a valid directory. Try
again.), and it doesn't seem to recognise the songs of this form when
reading an iTunes library.

Problem is I want to use the iTunes library as the source for the
SlimServer database, and that doesn't seem to like UNC paths (does work
but very slow to add new songs).

Re: [slim] UNC paths and NOT drive mappings ?

2007-03-02 Thread jezbo

I did try both forms, / and \, but I could not get it to recognise drive
mapping paths. BUT it does now! Does it depend on the setting
Automatically run at login?, since I turned this on and now drive
mappings seem to be accepted. Would make sense, since it's the user
login that sets up the drive mappings, not the machine startup.

Re: [slim] Sluggish Response

2007-02-22 Thread jezbo

Where's the health page?

Anyway, I tried it and slimserver running on the PC is definitely more
responsive than running on the NAS. This is no real problem for me
since I want to control my music FROM a pc (via CLI hooked into my own
program eventually) rather than from the remote with no pc on.

[slim] Sluggish Response

2007-02-21 Thread jezbo

I'm running SlimServer 6.5.1 on a QNAP TS-101 NAS drive. There's only a
small music library at present, but still performance is sluggish - it
streams music OK it's just slow to respond to instructions (from the
remote, the web interface and via CLI commands).

Could I expect more responsiveness if I run SlimServer on the PC where
I'm running the web interface from (and issuing CLI commands from)? The
actual music files will still be on the NAS drive of course (I have no
room for them on my PC!).

Or will this in fact be worse? I can try it of course, I just thought
someone might save me some time.

Re: [slim] Sluggish Response

2007-02-21 Thread jezbo

Thanks. I'll give it a go, I was just concerned it would be the same or
worse, since the whole music file has to make it's way from the NAS
drive to the PC wirelessly at some point anyway. I just didn't know
where the bottle-neck was. But as I said it was streaming the music OK.
