Good summation. The two aren't mutually exclusive, of course. If a

nightly (or any other interval) backups, and an external backup.
Starts to add up to a lot of drives though...

That's how I'll be running SC on my new system...

Interesting thought. Not that familiar with Solaris or ZFS but might
be worth looking into.

It bears repeating - RAID is not backup. Not even temporary backup.
Backup means having another set of data independent of the first. You
don't get this from RAID. I don't mean to sound patronizing - It's
clear to me that you understand this, but I worry that others reading
might not.

Mistaken deletions are the main reason I don't like RAID for my
situation. Loss of data is far more likely to come from fat fingering
than it is from hardware failure. My nightly rsync to another internal
HD gives me at least a few hours to detect and undo any mistakes before
they propagate to the second drive. With RAID I get no such grace
period.

Re: [slim] Which raid?

2009-03-14 Thread jsprag

I'm in agreement that RAID 1 or 5 is not the right answer. These
technologies are intended to provide high availability of data.
Relying on them for protection against data loss and as a substitute
for backups is a mistake.

I maintain two backups. The first is the weekly backup to an external
drive that I pull out of the safe, plug into the computer, and then
place back in the safe.

But because I'm doing daily changes to tags, artwork, ratings,
playlists, etc... I also want to mitigate the chance I'll lose a week's
worth of work. So I have another backup routine that automatically
syncs everything to a second internal drive on a nightly basis.

To me this is a far better use of two drives than making a RAID 1
array.

As I pointed out, Pandora on Squeezenetwork and the iPhone is both
ad-free and subscription fee free. These outlets don't create any
revenue yet they still have to pay the licensing/royalty fees. Hence,
giving something away and getting nothing in return.

Remember that the service hasn't had a single profitable year. So it
doesn't matter if the fee is 8/100th or 19/100th of a cent per song,
without some rain the well is gonna run dry eventually. The fee hike
only hastens the process.

In all likelihood they have a plan to leverage the market share they're
currently building into some sort of positive cash flow. They might be
able to pull it off, but they might not. A doubling of expenses
certainly cuts the time they have available to figure it out.

I am a happy user of the service (even paid the $36 for an annual
subscription) and I hope it survives.

Are we reading the same article? The fees are going from 8/100th of a
cent per song per listener to 19/100th of a cent. Works out to a 137%
increase so I'm not sure where you get your 700% figure from.

In any case, I think Goodsounds is right on the money. They are trying
to expand and capture listener market share (free Pandora on
Squeezenetwork, free Pandora on iPhone) but they aren't getting paid
for it. Not a bad technique to start out and establish your position
in the marketplace, but giving something away and getting nothing in

Re: [slim] Survey: What's your listening to fiddling ratio?

2008-06-11 Thread jsprag

Have an SB3 (1.5 yrs) with controller (1.5 months).

Mandatory fiddling: probably 150:1
Includes installing original SS and doing periodic updates along the
way to now be at SC 7.1. Also includes time setting up a dedicated
server somewhere along the way.

Discretionary or optional fiddling: maybe 60:1
Includes messing with plugins, trying out stuff on a virtual machine
that is configured the same as real server, etc

I don't have the duet package, but I do have the controller. That
component integrated into my existing software/hardware setup
seamlessly and I had it up and running in less than three minutes.

The only way I can think of for you to do this is make a copy of your

There is an outstanding feature request which proposes to have

- Yes, and making it 3D would give it a real competitive edge
- Yes, but it doesn't have to be that flashy. 2D would be fine.
- No, the existing interfaces are enough
- It might be nice but I would never use it

I gave it a no because a lot of solutions already exist for playing
music using the TV as a display. Hardware solutions like XBMC, Xbox
360, PS3, Apple TV, other media extenders (i.e. D-Link DSM-520) as well
as software such as LinuxMCE, Apple Front Row, J. River Media Center, so
on and so forth...

For me, the appeal of the Squeezebox is the ability to separate my TV
from my computer. I would be very unlikely to use of your proposed

 this should be no problem.

Wireless network interference can come from more than just other
wireless networks. Microwaves and cordless phones are particularly
troublesome.

I would also recommend first trying to connect using the ethernet cable
to determine if the problem is in your connection. If it is, then add
changing the wireless channel to your troubleshooting plan.

Re: [slim] Why Squeezebox sucks...

2008-02-10 Thread jsprag

Most media players allow you to define the action taken by double
clicking on a song. It can either be played immediately or added to
the end of the Now Playing list.

How about an option in Squeezecenter that allows you to define the
action taken when you press the play button? It could do one of three
things:

1. Immediately clear playlist and play song.
2. Append song to end of Now Playing (yes, I know the Add button does
this)
3. Insert song as the next song in Now Playing

Edit default map and you have all these options and more.
simply swap the play_0, play_1 and play_2 button options as you see
fit. 0 clears and plays, 1 adds to end, 2 inserts as next song.

Unless I'm missing something in the settings page, this requires me to
ssh to my headless server, open up the file in a text editor, make the
changes, and then re-start Squeezecenter.

Please tell me if I'm overlooking something.

Re: [slim] Digital audio out via USB

2008-01-30 Thread jsprag

Easy. Just do this:

USB--USB Network Adapter--Squeezebox--DAC/Amp

Probably not what you had in mind, but this *is* the Slimdevices
forum...
