[slim] New to Mac and Itunes - slimserver library help
Ive always been a pc user but recently switched to a mac ... various reasons for this but the question is ... what do people typically do with itunes and their music set up for slimserver itunes does seem easy to use and manage and very easy to manipulate tags and add artwork.. but not being a preverbial 'machead' i am not sure whether i should take the bold step to move all of my music (about 200gb of mp3) into use by itunes and more over whether I should allow itunes to manage my library. I will continue to use my sb3 for listening on stereo etc.. but just wanted to get a feel from other mac users on how they integrate their itunes and music libraries views comments and advice welcomed thanks ps - my use of itunes for ipod purposes is not huge as i only got a 4gb nano for use by itunes -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32462 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

jmpage2;147760 Wrote: Wow, less than 12 hours after the announcement and people are already predicting doom and gloom that they don't have bragging rights or niche status with their Squeezeboxes any longer. Folks, I thought it was about the music. Logitech can probably help Slim reduce costs on the more mainstream products like Squeezebox while still allowing a high end Transporter product to succeed in the market. I see a simple windows installer for the noobs and a high end server product for custom installs or those users who want to do their own compiles, add their own plugins, etc. This is all good for us, the consumers, as likely one big benefit of the acquisition is that prices will go down. Don't condemn this deal until it bears sweet or bitter fruit. And for those exceptionally bitter people, buy as many Sbs and Transporters as you ever think you will need and get the latest server software, it does virtually everything you would ever want to do for music listening in the current state it's in. [slim] scanning issues - are my playlists an issue
I recently upgraded from 6.3.1 to 6.5.0 I have roughly 26,ooo tracks, 6000 albums and 2500 artists Scaning always has been a bit of an issue - in so far as my Win XP machine takes a couple of hours to complete its scan. I have always wondered if this is to be expected or if my set up causes the longer process. DIrectory structure is basically F:/Music/personal folder/genre/artist/album/track When I upgraded to 6.5.0 and decided to browse playlists I noted that it brought up all playlists in the Music folder. Generally speaking I only had about 7 or 8 medium size playlists (circa 100 tracks each) which I had saved on my system before the upgrade. All of a sudden I now have roughly 300 recognized playlists. When I investigated this I then saw that in a number of my album folders I have a playlist file for the cd which was ripped - and these playlists make up the bulk if not all of those lists which I unexpectedly discovered. Doers anyone have an idea on the changes made to recognition of playlists and on whether having these in my directory would cause the scan process to take as long as it does.. or is it reasonalble to expect a library of my size (mostly MP3's @192kbs) to take upwards of 4 hours to to a full scan thoughts appreciated -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28237 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Kevin.. thanks for the reponse.. I will email with the info over the weekend and will run the event log too to try help identify the issue... [slim] problems displaying art - causes slimserver to crash
I do not use album art very much for browsing but have noticed on upgrading to 6.5 (using the new Touch Skin) whenever I browse artwork or even browse using the album search it causes slimserver to crash Is this a bug or is there something which I need to do with the way art is stored in my music folders I am running Win XP SP2 with SS 6.5.0 All album art is stored within the specific folder for each album/artist The other question I have with the change in the skins (Touch or otherwise) is that I recall that when looking at the status / now playing screen you used to have the path of the track also displayed.. is there anyway to get back this display function? Oh yes - third question is .. in the Touch skin (which looks great by the way) is there any way to change the font colour... I have noticed that when browsing by music folder there is very faint text on the top and bottom of the page which you can press to link back .. on my set up it appears as whicte text over very feighnt grey... not very readable -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27797 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi Andy - Just upgraded SS 6.2.2 to 6.5 (at work) and am using Softqueeze 2.3 to navigate... I do not see any search functionality within Softsqueeze when browsing shoutcast streams or rather I am not sure how you mean it to work ... should I see this using softsqueeze or is that a matter reserved only for SB3.. I note your comments regarding the total number of streams etc.. However in the past i would browse 'All streams' and type in the name of the station I was looking for in order to fast track to it... it looks like I will now have to do this on a genre basis.. is that correct? If so then it seems that there are a number of additional menus to navigate before getting to the station that you want... for instance if I were looking for 'Lounge radio' the current set up requires that I : browse by Genre scroll to Ambient then scroll to Lounge Radio as opposed to Browse All streams type 'Lounge ..' scroll then select the station So in a certain sense I can still see a reason to have all streams as a menu to select... end of the day I just want to get a greasp of hwo it is now being structured But for what it is worth I think both SS and SB3 are fantastic products!! ;-) -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23106 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You can get the webbased stream outside the US for free. sure you have to deal with the pop up but if you dont mind that then its all good. The same principle could easily be applied to the new SN service. I am not averse to paying for tunes, and whilst I appreciate that the current US legistlation requires that any fee based service will have teritorial limitations.. I do not see why the same principles cannot be applied, particulary when the net is streaming to those outside the US. -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20894 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: NY times/ Pandora
Great post and very pleased to hear that Pandora will be a part of SN. my question is .. Will the free service still be offered to SN users. It is not that I am averse to paying 36 bucks a year for the facility.. but as mentioned above.. thoses who live outside of the states (like me in the UK) have issues in getting the paid service. I have used pandora before (in the UK) but am limited to the free service.. which puts a small ad on screen sure it can be a bit of a pain but for free music streams I really dont mind... so... will us poor folk outside of the US be able to use pandora on our SB/SN beyond the 90 trial period... any chance of them incorporating the free (listen to an ad first) service? -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20894 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Bklass - just read thru some of yor earlier posts on the development work you did on the skin, particularly in relation to 'porting ' the skin back to ver 6.2 can you advise what the current position is on that. I'd like to use the skin.. but being a newby to SB3 I am reluctant to upgrade the beta 6.5 ( I'd rather stay with the devil I know!! ;-) alternatively.. can anyone explain in layman's terms how easy it is to upgrade to 6.5 and on whether you can step back down to 6.2 if you find the beta too much for a non-tech brain to handle nuff respect! -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19708 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

i am rather new to the wireless game,.. but having just got my SB3 .. I am lovin it I agree with your comments about the remote.. and before learning of the SB3 I thought that Sonos would have been my best option.. but the beauty with SB3 is that it is open to change.. so in terms of my remote .. I use a sony PSP running on their latest firmware which allows you to connect to a wpa-spk encypted network.. I use the hand held skin and is is great for connecting to the server and using as aa remote I agree that a bundled package would be good .. but what with so many options out there it is quite easy to sort out your exact needs... i think the SB3 / PSP remote combo is pretty hard to beat. -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19943 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB3 wont play tunes ripped from Itunes collection
Wondering if anyone hs any thoughts on this... I have collected a number of tunes which were stored on an aopple PC and used in itunes (pre itunes version 1.6) I have been able to play these in winamp prior to getting my SB3... but now with my SB3 they will not play at all.. the track info is recognized byut will simply not play. the file formats are noted as either .m4a or winamp media files.. I have tried to run the Jhymn conversion software on the basis that there was some form of DRM on the files.. but there was nothing to convert any ideas on why these files will not play.. since they play in winamp and do not appeear to be protected by apple... any ideas appreciated -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19945 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: A suggestion for people with large music library
Many thanks for your replies i now have a much better understanding of how the system works After reading your comments I suspect that my best bet is to go thru and tag and rename a number of fields within all my tracks ... I know there are many programs that will assist but the mamoth task that I envison puts me off.. perhaps I need not think of it that badly... nevertheless... as for the ability to browse music folders within the database rather than the hard drive I for one think that might be a useful addition, although whether there are competing interests to keep the existing way in place (ie to allow users to search for tracks outside of the database) - who knows?? I would happily endorse a bug fix for this.. but being new to the forum (and forums generally for that matter) I dont really have a clue on how to start off the process... Michael .. if you can start the ball rolling and let me know how I can endorse it .. please do. anyway... thanks for the help.. will post an update on how i get on in due course... -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19080 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I got my SB3 a couple of weeks ago.. and aside from the usual connection problems that I had to sort out the whole system works great. However, one thing I've notice with my set up is that there is a considerable delay when browsing my music folders on the SB3. Once I drill into a folder it often takes 10 secs to drill down further into the artist/album listings. My music is organized Genre/Artist/Album/Track I have about 140gigs of tunes or roughly 16K tracks all stored on an external HD. For the most part the tracks are ripped as 192 kbs MP3's... the Slimserver is loaded on an old PC (which may be my problem?) and connected to a Belkin wireless G router My PC is a PIII 550mhz, 512mb RAM and is running WIN XP Is this the couase of my slowdown or is such a slowdown to be expected with my size of music library? Any helpful advice would be appreciated to improve the overall performance of my system thanks -- rick's cafe rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19080 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

thanks for the guidance: Yes.. I use the Browse Music Folder option via the SB3 interface. I have installed a USB 2.0 card in the back of my PIII .. the external HD is connected to this slot. The HD is made by Western Digital technical specs as follows: Rotational Speed7,200 RPM (nominal) Buffer Size 2 MB Average Latency 4.20 ms (nominal) Seek Times Read Seek Time 8.9 ms Track-To-Track Seek Time2.0 ms (average) Serial Transfer Rate USB 2.0 Serial Bus Transfer Rate (USB 2.0) 480 Mbits/s (Max) My PC, although old.. is not used for anything other than running SS and browsing the net. I have no other apps to speak of running other processes. Basically I am trying to figure what I should best do to speed up overall performance... if the PC can work then I am not minded to change it out... as for the HD .. I have jsut noted that mine only has 2 mb buffer size and new models extend up to 8 mb and 16 mb cache / buffer size I am thinking of getting a new external HD as I am running out of storage.. do you think the added buffer size will assist? thanks -- rick's cafe rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19080 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I much prefer searching for music via the browse music folder route... does anyone know if there are any plans or if there is any way in which SS can be modified so that it reads this info from the Databse rather than from the disk. I know that I can browse by artist but the logic of my current file structure and organization of files lends itself to browsing by folder at the moment my structure is like this f://soundsystem/spinsounds/reggae/peter tosh the root is soundsystem then i have various sub folders which help me categorize where i got my tunes from ... any ideas relating to organization and speed for searching would help.. one other point is that prior to using SB3 .. i used winamp as my player same file structure and smae number of tunes but no issues in terms of lag time when using winamp search facility which presumably worked on a database system although there was a bit of a lag when using the Dynamic lilbrary winamp plugin , which basically mirrors the usual windows file structures... any thoughts welcomed -- rick's cafe WHEN MUSIC HIT YOU YOU FEEL NO PAIN!!! rick's cafe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3021 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19080 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Wireless works!
OK, after much hair pulling and head bashing, I finally got this bad boy to work. Prior to this, my Slim 3 was getting a bulsh%t IP from my network (169.XXX.XXX.XXX) and wouldn't connect to my slimserver. Here's my setup: Slim 3 Belkin FSD7633-4 router secured with WPA-PSK Win XP on a PIII 1) After screwing up every setting possible, start with fresh factory defaults by unplugging the Slim 3, holding down 'Add' while plugging the power back in. Make sure you also have slimserver running on your PC. 2) Setup your router with the bare necessities, none of that turbo and 54g protection crap. No NAT, port forwarding either. Most of what you need to check is in the Channel and SSID screen. Not sure if it matters, but my SSID is only one word. I switched it from two words before it all started working. Wireless mode is '54g-Auto'. Broadcast SSID is 'on'. 3) On the Slim 3, setup the network. Follow the instructions, using DHCP, BUT enter in the SSID manually. Not sure whether this matters but someone on these forums mentioned this works. Before I knew it, I was connected to the network and the slim server and was listening to Fela Kuti's Open Close! Fitting.
