[slim] Multiple albums

2006-07-11 Thread Slim etc account

I have just shifted my library from the hard drive of my PC to a Western
Digital NAS storage device. At the same time I upgraded the Slimserver from
6.2 to 6.3.

On a rescan I now seem to have most of the library duplicated.

Is there a simple fix for this, or do I need to go back to the previous
version?

Thanks

Newbie here, so please be gentle if I ask something which has already been
answered.

I'm a strickly a two channel guys BUT have a Home Theatre which currently
uses PowerDVD to Project on a screen and sound via a long coax cable from my
Computer, to an external DAC.

As a Video player PowerDVD offers MANY different setting for me to
virtually create surround sounds through my two speakers setup.

This setup is effective in doing the overall job and suits me well.

Anyhoo, once I purchase a SB2, and integrate into my current setup, will I
be able to channel the downmixed 5.1 information to my Stereo, as I
currently do.

This is pretty important to me.

All feedback regarding this would be VERY much appreciated.

Thanx much Fred in Canada

RE: [slim] Music categories in SlimServer

2005-08-20 Thread slim
There's a very easy way that works for me and my family: use Browse Music
Folder after organising your specific collection in folders.
Example:

-You
-- hard
-- alternative
-Your Wife
-- folk
-- female singers
- etc...

You both have access to the complete collection, but if you or your wife
only wants to hear your own music, just browse to your own directory and
press play at the level you want to start listening (e.g. if you press play
at the 'Your Wife Level' her entire collection gets played, but none of your
hard stuff..)

It's very easy and works wonders...My wife kids never have any trouble
finding our own music collection.

Subject: [slim] Music categories in SlimServer

I finally finished ripping and encoding my 400+ CD collection. Having random
access to my music from various places in the house is fantastic for sure.

I am wondering about something however. My wife and I have very different
taste in music. I like the hard and alternative stuff, she likes folk,
female singers, etc. Browsing the music collection can be an interesting
experience! However I wonder if there could be a way to make it easier for
her to find what she wants. Sure, we can set up playlists, but they group
all songs together and you lose the ability to browse by artist/album. I
could group her stuff in a limited (or even one) amount of genres but I like
the accurate genres I have everything tagged with.

Ideally there would be a 'category' feature in SlimServer. A kind of top
level attribute where you could limit your collection when browsing.
Something like this could be achieved with a clever search, unfortunately
the wife is non technical and wants a button called 'wife' that allows her
to access her music.

AFAIK this doesn't exist right now in SlimServer, so this is a bit of a
musing on something that would be useful. If there is a way to do this now
in SlimServer I'd love to hear about it.

[slim] Biography as screensaver?

2005-05-12 Thread slim
The biography plugin is one of my favorites since long. I use it a lot, but
it requires quite a bit button-pressing, since it still is an 'external'
plugin.

I'd like to see this one incorporated to use as a screensaver (just as the
RSS feeds can). Could this be possible in any way?

I guess one of the difficulties is that the screensaver should update in
sync with the tracks (so that a new biography is loaded at the start of a
new track), which is a bit agains the nature of a screensaver I guess. Maybe
there's some difficulty in this, but on the other hand the slimserver
programmers have solved bigger problems :-)

Could this be a feature request?

[slim] SB2 Display flicker

2005-04-30 Thread slim

On the SB2 display, I noticed there are three pixels flickering, a bit
starry-like.

They are in the left corner: above middle in brightness 3, below middle in
brightness 2.
There is no flickering in brightness 4, 1 or off, so it's not the display
itself obviously.

Anyone else seen this?

Also, the display seems to glow on both sided when powered (except in the
display off state).

Just curious

I do not work with playlists, I always start my music using browse music
folder.
Since upgrading to Slimserver version 6 I noticed that the reaction to my
remote-commands are very much slower.
I was under the impression there was another database architecture so that
response would be faster? But it isn't.
Useing browse music folder for the forst time after startup the sb2 stops
responding for more than 5-10 seconds, and then resumes playback. Subsequent
use if faster, though. It is as if the database is reindexed? Is this a
known problem?

[slim] Squeeze Network Other Problems

2005-04-19 Thread Slim Pickins

A few things:

1) When the computer running Slim Server is off, I cannot acquire any
internet radio from the Squeezebox2 using the remote. When the server
is off, the display on Squeezebox2 is blank. I hit power, and it
attenpts to connect to slim server and then drops after a few seconds,
going blank. No other options exist, other than configuring network
settings. Am I missing something?

2) [EMAIL PROTECTED] is not operational. I've received several
daemon message failure notices for it. Anyone know of an active support
email address?

3) I definitely have Zone Alarm (free) problems. Randomly, slim server
does not want to start up with Zone Alartm running. When I turn off
Zone Alarm, the problen goes away completely. But, sometimes, slim
server will start up when ZA is loaded. ZA free does not seem to offer
the fine-grained control needed to adjust its port settings. (Yes, I've
given permissions for all slim devices and software to run through ZA).
Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

On Windows, SlimServer is packaged as an executable that bundles the Perl
packages that we use. To make source modifications, you need to have an
ActiveState Perl installation
(http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/) and will need to run the
server via the slimserver.pl script.

The visualizers are configurable from the server, though we haven't yet
created a UI for this. If you're feeling particularly bold, you can
modify the configuration parameters in the server source. The
parameters for the right-side visualizer in the Now Playing modes are
in Slim/Player/Squeezebox2.pm and those for the full-screen visualizers
are in Plugins/Visualizer.pm. The configuration parameters (including
position, orientation, bandwidth, etc.) are documented in the first file.

The spectrum analyzer is implemented using a simple fixed-point FFT
with a Hamming window applied to the signal. Since most real-world
audio has considerably more power in the lower frequency bands, one of
the configurable parameters is a preemphasis value applied to the
frequency bins after the FFT (effectively a multiplier for the higher
frequency
bins) - the value is specified in dB/KHz.

I've spent a little bit of time playing with the parameters to get
something that looks reasonably good (and that's the eventual goal,
right?). If anyone, ideally someone with a better aesthetic sense than
I, is interested in experimenting and coming up with better parameters,
or even a UI for users to configure their own parameters, I'd welcome the
changes.

I'm a user with a faily standard setup: using XP with Outlook. I want to add

impractical of all 'mailing-list-digests' I receive, as it requires an awful
lot of mouseclicking to read through the mails.

This is my reason to vote for the forum side of things

Just to confirm my findings, I reset the list to the defaults, rescanned

Even more entertainingly, the quick list at the top of the web

entire page and is just a random collection of letters.

I've noticed this behaviour in previous versions (5.3 and 5.4) as well. I
was able to track it down to my editing the Articles to ignore list in
connection with using the iTunes database as the source for slimserver. When
I removed the german articles (der, die,

I never filed this as a bug though :-/

It looks like
there's a comma missing between album and track in the hierarchy parameter (if I
addthe comma, the URL works). I can raise a bug report if anyone else can
see the issue.

Adam.

RE: [slim] SB2 Satisfaction -- gapless!

2005-04-01 Thread slim
I currently do OGG to PCM with an SB1 and it's gapless (which is very
important to me). OGG to MP3 isn't - I assume because the decoder in the SB1
doesn't understand the LAME gapless tags. Can anyone confirm whether the
decoder in SB2 understands the gapless tags?

What do you mean? The SB2 can now play mp3's gapless?

No idea... if I had mp3s, I'd tell you. If nobody else chimes in, I'll
re-encode some album as mp3s and give it a whirl. For my setup with one ogg
file per track and being sent as flac to the SB2, it is gapless.
Doing ogg to pcm or mp3 on the SB1 wasn't for me.

[slim] RE: Discuss Digest, Vol 18, Issue 3

2005-04-01 Thread slim
I've seen quite a few posts discussion bugs and flaws on the 6.0 server
release.
I'm quite happy with my SB1 running on 5.4.1 now, but still, I plan on
ordering a SB2.
This needs to run on 6.0 - I can understand that.
But is this version stable enough to support the new SB2 without problems
(on wireless, XP2 setup with about 27K tracks)?
Is this the right time to switch to SB2, or should I wait a few months?

[slim] Artist Sort Order

2005-03-31 Thread slim
First post - be gentle :)

I just upgraded to 6.0, primarily to see if it fixed my problems with
non-latin characters (I have a number of albums by european artists with
accented names which would always look crazy on 5.4). Since installing
everything looks OK (and scans are certainly faster), but one thing seems
rather broken - Browse by Artist. The order of artists in the list seems
completly random (both on the squeezebox and on the web interface). Even
more entertainingly, the quick list at the top of the web interface (which
should read ABCDEF...) actually spans nearly the entire page and is just a
random collection of letters.

I did a quick search of the archives and didn't see anything similar
reported, am I alone? I don't think I'm running anything weird - 6.0
release on XP professional SP2, with ~8000 tracks (mainly ogg, some flac).
Everything's tagged nicely, wiping the cache doesn't seem to help (in fact,
when I just tried it it seemed to get worse!). Under 5.4 everything was
fine, and even under 6.0 it's only Artists which have this problem, Albums
are correctly sorted.

Suggestions?

[slim] Low Bitrate Streams Playing Fast in SoftSqueeze 2.0

2005-03-21 Thread slim

I noticed this today after getting PublicRadioFanBrowser working over the
weekend. All NPR streams are playing fine through the plugin to the
Slimp3s in my house, but SoftSqueeze is speeding them up to chipmunk
speeds. Most of the NPR streams are 24kps, I don't know if that is the
problem. The following is an typical stream that I am having a problem
with. I don't think it is a problem with the plugin since I get the same
audio output if I put the following url in the Internet Radio 'Tune in
Now' field in the WebUI:

http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wyep/ppr/wyep.pls

I am currently using the 3-21-05 Nighly of both SlimServer v6.0b3 and
SoftSqueeze v2.0a14 on a Fedora 3 system.

Let me know if any additional information would be helpful or if I should
file this as a bug so it doesn't get lost.

 just add this:

Re: [slim] AAC playback

2005-03-17 Thread slim
Can someone help me get aac playback working with slimserver 6.0 on
Linux. I am trying to look at a Softsqueeze bug where aac files just
play back as white noise. But at the moment I find all aac files
playback as white noise on both SB1 and softsqueeze.

 Thanks,
 Richard

Richard,

I might actually be able to help you after all you patience with me and
SoftSqueeze. I have AAC playback working on Fedora Core 3 (and previously
Core2) with the following setup.

Installed:

faad2-2.0-2.20040923.1.fc3.rf.i386.rpm
lame-3.96.1-2.1.fc3.rf.i386.rpm

Added the following lines to my convert.conf:

mov mp3 * *
[faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [lame] -x -m s -r -S -q 5 -s 44.1 - -

This is working now on a Fedora Core3 box streaming over ssh to
Softsqueeze (2.0a14) and at home directly to my Slimp3s.

I was actually going to play around with getting faad to flac working to
avoid the extra lossey conversion when using SoftSqueeze on systems on my
home network and only do the mp3 convertions for traffic over SSH or my
Slimp3s. If this is something you get working before I do, let me know
how you get on.

This should work. I added flc stuff to convert.conf and tested this one
 out with my slimserver-convert.conf.

 mov flc * *
   [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --compression-level-0 -

however, I didn't try this with softsqueeze. I'm not sure flac is
 supported o that just yet.

 -kdf

Thank you for the suggestion, but that didn't actually work for me. For
some reason I got multiple copies of faad running with that and
SlimServer's cpu jumped to 90+%. In the end after a litlle searching
through the new convert.conf for ideas I came up this setup that is
working for me.

mov flc * *
[faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --compression-level-0 --endian
little --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 -

Now when streaming aac files to SoftSqueeze direclty as flac I see about
11% CPU (6% slimserver, 3% faad 2% flac). That's down about 20% from
what used to go towards reencoding with lame.

Thanks again...

[slim] 60b1 buggy?!

2005-03-12 Thread slim
Tried the new version 60b1 yesterday, but immediately downgraded to 5.4.1
after running into serious bugs, such as an empty display trying to 'Browse
Music Folder'.
Isn't it a bit too early to present this version as the present 'stable'
download on the site? Too much haste in presenting new product can also kill
it on the long run.

I sure hope the version will be as stable as 5.4.1 when the SB2 comes out...
(Although in fact I still have some trouble with 5.4.1 when searching for
track titles)

Bye Peter

[slim] service stops

2005-03-11 Thread slim

Maybe this question has been
asked before, but I can't find any reference:

Though my slimserver seems to
be installed correct, the service stops after the Squeezebox has been inactive
for a while.
The squeezebox then loses
connection. Service has to b started manually then and everything is OK
again.

Anyone got any tips for this
problem?

Bye

Peter

[slim] biography plugin on Slimserver 6b1

2005-03-11 Thread slim

Upgraded to 6b1 today. Most
things seem to work OK; I like the new features..and searching for song titles
seems more stable than it used to be..
However, one of the greatest
plugins of recent times - the biography plugin- stopped working.

I liked reading some of the
artist details through the interface of on the squeezebox,so i'd like to see
this plugin working in the new version
Anyone got this plugin working
working on version 6 ?

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze 2.0 'Now Playing' bug

2005-03-10 Thread slim
I have been working on this with Richard today.

It turns out that it is mostly fixed in the 3-10-05 Nightly of 6.0b. The
remaining problem of the Track Title information not updating is related
to a bug in the SlimServer itself when the title is long enough to require
scrolling. Richard is filing a bug for this, so it is put on the to-do
list.

Tom Malsbury

 I can confirm this.

When I browse to album and press play, it works, but the NOW PLAYING
screen seems to be stuck at track 1 and never changes to tracks 2,3,
etc as the playlist goes along. Even after some additional navigating
and a push of the NOW PLAYING button, it goes back to track 1 even
though I'm deep into the playlist.

BTW Richard, excellent job on the new fonts, animations, and VU
 meters.

Re: [slim] Slim Devices SB2 disappointment SB for sale.

2005-03-09 Thread slim

Think of it like this. This (the SD operated mailing list) is a pretty
good place to put up a WTS notice for an SB1. In a way, this is
 helping with the resale.

I just need to chime in an say that the resale of units is pretty steady.
After the production of SLIMP3s stopped and Slimdevices released the
Squeezebox1 I picked up 4 SLIMP3s on ebay in a matter of a few weeks. All
were purchased from happy owners looking to get new squeezboxen. It
worked out well for all involved. I got SLIMP3s for my whole house and
they got money towards their new toys.

 Hi all
I'm new to Slimserver, having just purchased a
 Squeezebox.

I've got a mix of MP3 and WMA Lossless files, plus
some WMA 192K for good measure!

Very few of the albums I have include album art. As I
have 700+ albums, I can't face going through by hand
to cut/paste the cover artwork from Amazon or
 whereever.

Ideally, I'd like a tool that would scan my library
for all albums, then go off and hunt down an
appropriate album cover, import it and save in right
folder. I've found one or two (Abander, Album Art
Fixer) but don't seem to work as I want them to (maybe
 I'm not using them right).

All I want is to add album art - don't want any
 programs mucking up my tags!

Can anyone offer suggestions or help!?

 Thanks

 Nick
