I do like the fact that that Ipeng/Ipad finds the server automatically.

That's not the right question to ask ;)
Such a feature will definitely come - the question is how long are you
going to wait for it ?

When you start the Airport Extreme Utility it has an option
 'Internet/DHCP/Add DHCP reservation'.
There you can configure that your Server-Tiger-Mac gets the same
IP-Adress all the time. Then you'll never need to go to the settings
 screen of SqueezePad again.

Here is a good step by step tutorial with pictures for Max and Airport
Extreme - shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes to do and then you'll
have much more joy with SqueezePad already today:
 http://support.herefilefile.com/entries/158807-add-a-dhcp-reservation-to-your-airport-extreme

I know that it could be much more comfortable - but on the other hand I
want to focus on real features first before tackling stuff that users
(with a little help on my side) can solve themselves very easily.

Hey, thanks for that. I assigned a static address and all works fine
now.

OK, you got me off your back, I wont have to hunt you down in Germany
to get my money back :-)

Again, the GUI is very slick. I have my Ipad on a Stainless steel

Every time I use SP I have to try many iterations before it will

detect the difference between an mp3 128 and original source, just that
it typically takes very good hearing and songs where potential artifacts
are likely. These are not the typical case for most listening. If you
really want to learn more about this sort of thing go over to
hydrogenaudio.org and read the material on this issue and the many forum
posts. But I'm getting the idea that you're not actually interested in
learning anything that changes your initial beliefs and you're happy to
accept the heuristics and biases that may color your beliefs. That's
ok--to each their own. We're just listening to music, not curing cancer.
And as I said, I personally prefer all my music in FLAC (lossless) if at
possible (even streams if they were available)but not because I
think I can hear any difference (in my library of over 100,000 songs
I've heard less than a dozen songs that were not transparent at 128).

I have done quite a few blind tests that I have distinguished between
128 and 192 or higher listening to well recorded classical and jazz.
Most commercial pop recordings are so bad that it doesn't seem to make
much diff.

It takes an experienced listener with a well trained ear to hear the
difference.

At 128 the soundstage is flatter, less 3 dimensional. There is less
hall ambience which is so helpful in creating spacial cues. There is
less air around instruments etc.

192VBR seems to be the starting point for adequate hi-fi. It is much
harder to hear differences above that rate, although I have been able to
do that on some recordings.

At 128 it is actually very easy to hear the diffs blind on well
recorded music especially if you are very familiar with the recording.

One should remember that any listening test is testing the listeners
ear training as well as the bit rate.
Not everyone will hear the diffs. However the majority of people can be
trained to hear those diffs, as proven through years of musicians
improving their aural skills in ear training classes.

from my FLAC files just because the possibility of artifacts is much
reduced at that level. My only point in all these postings is that the
initial statement that inferred that just about anyone with just about
any song should be able to easily hear differences in 128 vs the
original CD is factually wrong and perpetuates certain myths.

Oh No ! It sounds like we are in complete agreement...Oh

For me it becomes very difficult to hear diffs at 256VBR which is what

[slim] Apple Iphone= Idiotphone?

2007-01-10 Thread tomjtx

Does the I in the Iphone stand for idiot?
As in : only an idiot would pay that much for a phone that doesn't do
as much as a smart phone which can be almost free with a contract?

Idiotphone: no user replacable battery, locked sim card that is
probably harder to unlock than any other phone(or impossible, remember,
it's Apple)
I don't think it has wi-fi so you have to burn minutes to surf the
web(could be mistaken on this one)

If the fragility of the ipod is an indicator don't buy this phone w/o
the normal cellphone extended warranty that includes mysterious loss.

When it breaks(like the ipod) Apple will do anything they can to not
honor the warranty.

Check out Anti Cable, at 10.00 per foot pair it isn't outrageous.
Or, go to Radio Shack and buy magnet wire and DIY for about 20 cents

would have a higher impedance than a stranded wire. Any repeated
bending would degrade the magnet wire's performance in a speaker wire
 application.

Plus an enameled wire won't be as forgiving of surface damage (abrasion
etc.) as an extruded insulation would be.

Yes, I am serious about magnet wire and many others are to. The Anti
Cables sound better than my previous 3,000.00 cable and I liked them
better than the top Nordhost I auditioned!
Speltz of Anti Cable lists the measured imedance, and capacitance etc.
both twisted and untwisted, which is more than a lot of cable
manufacturers do.

Bending does nothing to degrade the sound as Speltz shows with
measurments.

The Anti's are the best speaker cable I have had in my system and are
dirt cheap.
So cheap you should give them a try, I think he offers a trial.
Or go to RS and spen 10.00 and give it a try. Most people sell their
expensive wire after doing this.

Paul's IC's are harder to DIY.

2006-12-16 Thread tomjtx

nicoff;162861 Wrote:
First post here so if I am asking for something that has been covered at
 length elsewhere please excuse.
I have what many would consider a high-end audio system. I bought a SB
recently and love the idea transferring my entire CD collection to the
computer. I am using EAC to get FLAC files and streaming them to my SB.
I am transferring the digital data from the SB to a digital preamp
(Lexicon MC-1) which does the digital/analog conversion.
My first impression is that I sort of prefer the sound of my standalone
CD player (by a tiny margin)than when using the SB. (BTW, my CD player
is a Sonic Frontier CD-1, a tube player (yes, vacuum tube) that only
has analog outputs; no digital). So no D/A conversion is needed by the
Lexicon digital preamp when using the CD player.

I am going to assume that if I am streaming digital data to a digital
preamp the SB and the Transporter should sound the same. Am I correct?

Using analog output, would I be able to hear a noticeable difference in
sound (for the better of course) if I were to use the Transporter and
its analog output versus the SB?

 Thanks to all who reply!

IMO you sould try the Transporter using it's own DAC eg. TP analog
outs

I have a Sonic Frontiers CDT and their SFD2 Mark2 with recent mods.

The TP is better than that by a WIDE margin. IMO

I prefer the TP to the SBLavry as well although that is a MUCH closer
call than the Sonic Frontiers.

The TP has a 30 day trial period so I think it's a no-brainer to try
it.

I may never play a CD again...I buy it , burn it, listen to
it :-)

DI-524, and my OS is XP. SlimServer version is 6.3.1. My computer has
1.59 GHz with 512 MB of RAM.

Is there any other info that would help pinpoint the issue?

 Thank you

I had 512 MB RAM and SS slowed down the computer I now have 1 gig and
everything is fine...could that be your problem?

[slim] Re: Sonos-like remote?

2006-09-25 Thread tomjtx

great ida, I wouldn't have figured it out if I hadn't spent some tme in
these forums. If it were a part of the package more people would know
about it and not go with the sonos.

Why doesn't Slimdevices create a deluxe remote with a color

users the same experience you can get through Sonos?

It could work via Wi-Fi connection to Slimserver or IR to Squeezebox
 or
Transport (I suggest both, so as to be adaptable to customers'
  configurations).

  What do you think?

I'd pay $199 for it. Don't know it's enough to cover costs...

I'm starting to think that Slim should work out an OEM deal with Nokia

or another vendor of one of these devices, not because it would make
them any significant amount of money, but just so that they can check
off that box on their feature list: Available graphical remote for
people who want to compare our feature list to Sonos'.

I asked the same question 2 weeks ago. The short answer is a pda is
cheaper and Ben's nokia skin is great. The Nokia770 is a wifi pda that
you can use for much more than just a remote.
They are out of stock or selling above retail in most stores. An ebay
seller still has some new for only 330.00 I bought mine there.

To use the skin go to your web address for your slimserver and after
9000 put in the skin eg.

9000/nokia770. Try this on your computer and you will see how nice the
gui is

On the other hand, what you suggest... first it's not as market

computer to then use it just as a remote. Moreover, handhelds with a
good screen and Wi-Fi are still hugely expensive, aren't they?

the sonos remote is either 349.00 or 399.00. I don't remember which.
The nokia770 is 330 on ebay. you get a great remote with a fantastic,
free, gui, and you can use the remote as a pda when you travel ( the
reason the nokia is hard to get is that many people think it's the best
new pda on the market) I don't have an opinion on that bit I do like
mine
So what's the better deal?

One other thing, there are even cheaper pda's that wil do the job as
well as the Sonos.so you could spend even less.
Check out the nokia on the web, check out Ben's skin and I think you
might find this a good solution.
It was so easy to do this that even I, a computer illiteate coud do it
;-)

2006-09-19 Thread tomjtx

Broke down and got a nokia770. Found a new one on ebay for 330.00, usa
version 2006.
The dealer has 14 in stock. do an ebay search to find. This was the
best price I found. Almost everyone is back ordered. The only other in
stock dealer wanted
379.00, 20.00 over retail.

So I am just waiting for someone to post they got theirs at 229.00 and
mine is a counterfeit ;-)

[slim] SB sonos or olive style remote

2006-09-16 Thread tomjtx

Why doesn't Slimdevices make a remote similar to the Sonos or the one
now available for the Olive? about 200.00
They both have screens with a nice guiso much easier
this way.
I know a macbook could be set up to do this but that is cumbersome.

Of course the SB is such a bargain I bet you guys could make something
for less:-)

But I would even cough up the 200.00

So please, take my money.

BTW I just got the SBit's a great product that sounds fantastic in
my high-end system through the digital outs.
So I don't mean to complain...I just want you guys to make
more money:-)

[slim] Re: Remote screen view

2006-09-16 Thread tomjtx

Got the macbook to operate the SB.
I hadn't put the emac's ip in.
Works great. All this info was in the manual, so sorry for the bother.
I do think SD should sell a remote like the Sonos or Olive.
I think it would be popular.

Maybe I'll have to get the Nokia

Thanks again

[slim] Re: SB sonos or olive style remote

2006-09-16 Thread tomjtx

Sorry, I think I got that wrong.

The sonus remote is 350 and their player is 399 so it is a lot more.

I wonder what SD would need to charge to make something that was
similar to control the SB and or the Transporter.
I would think buyers of both units would be interested.

I dont think I need the transporter since I have a pretty high end DAC.
there might be a lot of people like me who like the price of the SB
because they don't need what the transporter offers, but are willing to
spend more for.
.
a good remote

the macbook option is woking great.
I would rather not hassle with the setup to connect the Nokia although
it looks great.
Surely SD could put out something atyor below that price that is plug
and play?

As they say in Spain: De illusion tan bien se vive

[slim] Re: SB sonos or olive style remote

2006-09-16 Thread tomjtx

OK, that sounds easy and I might just buy the Nokia tonight.

I was refering to Ben's skin for the Nokia.
It looks great. A very intuitive gui.

Since I now know I can use the Nokia like I do my laptop I can wait
till the bugs are out of the skin.

For a musician the SB is one great device. I am able to access many
interesting stations with a quality far superior to Itunes.
The only problem is that it's one more temptation not to practice.

Thanks for the info.
My SB is linked to my desktop e-mac, I can use it to control SB. I
would like to use my new macbook to do same. It dosn't recognize my
SB.

I am a rather illiterate computer user so please excuse these basic
questions.

I am a literate and professional classical guitarist so if you have any
questions about that I might have something minimally intelligent to say
:-)
