[slim] No gain, no pain
Hi, I have an SB3 and a SB Boom controlled from the same server. However, I suspect that I have about 6dB less gain on the SB3. If I set both SB's with the analog VU on the display, music from my library on the Boom reaches -1 to -2 dB. However, on the SB3, it barely ever gets to -7dB. Changing the audio settings to fix the volume control to 100% on the SB3 doesn't seem to affect this. However, internet based radio stations are nice and loud on both SB's. Any thoughts? Is there a way to add ~6dB gain to the SB3, via CLI or some other means, independent of the Boom? - Thanks. -- weinstro Regards, Rob weinstro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90116 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] CPU, streamed radio stations, and the SB Server
Hi, I have a SB3 with 7.5.2. While playing internet radio stations, the CPU on the SB server will eventually get pegged at 100%, and the SB3 will lose connection. This never occurs with music or podcasts from my own library. It can take 20-30 min. to regain control of the server once this occurs. Is there a fix? The SB server is installed on an older Compaq SR2139, with AMD Athlon 64 CPU, and 2GB RAM, clocked at 2.2 GHz. It depends on what format your music is currently in, and what formats your devices are capable of playing natively (as if the device doesn't support the format natively, it will need to be transcoded in realtime to another format). It depends on what, how many, and what models of playback devices you have. It depends on how many of those devices will be playing simultaneously, and what they will be playing (will they all be playing different music that needs to be transcoded? Will one be playing an internet radio stream, while another plays local music only?). There are tons of variables that need to be taken into account... some have minor impacts, some have major ones. Mnyb;599652 Wrote: OS, sbs version , how many users shall use the web-Ui at the same time. How many and wich plugins some are CPU intensive. I can quantify all of these points. Worst case, I figure 4 devices (SB3, Boom, 2 Touches), playing ALAC, potentially simultaneously and independently. I'll assume that all of these devices will require transcoding at the server. All will be connected via LAN. Desktop machine would be based on Windows XP, running latest generally available version of SB Server -- 7.5.2, IIRC. Desktop machine would be dedicated to media streaming only -- no other gaming, web surfing, etc. iTunes would also be on this box, as would virus scanning software. No plans for MS Office, etc. I use the podcast and pandora plugins. I'm intrigued by the DRC / Inguz plugins, but I'm not far enough on the learning curve for those, yet. Should work OK, right? [slim] LAN connection via Cat 3?
Hi, I placed a Boom in a bedroom where the WiFi signal strength isn't the best, so I would like to pursue a wired connection. The room doesn't have Cat 5 cable run to it, but it does have a Cat 3 phone line. Can I terminate that Cat 3 cable with the appropriate LAN connector and be good to go? Distance from the switch is ~30 ft. Hi, thank you for your prior responses. I have a followup question... Mnyb;598052 Wrote: ...What Squeezeboxserver does then is transcode alac to flac on the fly this will up your CPU load while playing depending on the spec of the laptop you may notice (or not). How much of a CPU load is this? Right now, if the laptop running SBS is running a virus scan, lots of websurfing, or other activities, the music stream does get interrupted. However, I cant tell if this is from processor overload or network bandwidth limitations. Right now, there are two SB's. I'd like to add 2 more. If the file format is mostly ALAC, implying server side transcoding, will this be an issue? I have a desktop tower that I repaired with an Athlon 64, running at 3.7 GHz with 2 GB RAM. Would this be a better (sufficient) choice? [slim] Q on File Formats
Hi, My current setup is this: - SB3 connected via LAN - Boom connected via WiFi - Laptop running SBS, with media stored on a NAS, configured as a file server / disk backup - Music is managed via iTunes, with media stored as AIFF This generally works well, but it severely limits how much I can store on my iPhone, and I'm increasingly concerned with bandwidth consumption, especially over WiFi. What do I give up by going to ALAC as a file format? Is it worthwhile to have two libraries, one in ALAC, and the other in FLAC? My big concern here would be ease of use for other users (kids, wife, etc.). You may already do this aiff is probably transcoded to flac to minimise badwith use over wifi (depending on settings in sbs). Which may be why I couldn't hear a difference. I thought SB3's could decode AIFF files natively. Could you please direct to where/how to adjust the file type decoding settings to force this, verses transcoding at the server? I'd like to do some comparisons between AIFF AIFF; AIFF FLAC; ALAC FLAC. It took time to figure it out, but I like the iTunes integration, and I'm not in a hurry to have duplicate libraries unless there's a compelling reason to do so. [slim] iTunes and Configuration Q's
Hi, I have a SB Classic and Boom, connected via LAN. iTunes and Squeeze Server run on the same machine. All music files are stored on a separate WD NAS. This drive is mapped as a network drive. The NAS is treated as file storage only. One of the problems with this setup is that both iTunes and Squeeze Server seem to forget where the music is stored and reset back to a local drive folder. I can restore the connection, rescan, and all is good, but this is manual process that needs to be repeated frequently. The questions: - Under the iTunes tab, I selected the Use iTunes checkbox. But, how should iTunes Music Library.xml Location and iTunes Media Folder be specified? - How do I set this up such that the iTunes Music Library.xml can be read on the same machine where iTunes application and Squeeze Server reside, while referencing files stored on the NAS? - How do I set this up such that it stops resetting the locations for the library.xml and iTunes media folder? - Under the Basic Settings tab, what should the entries be for Music Folder and Playlists Folder? [slim] Setup Questions for SB3
Hi, I have setup a new SB3, and am now having some issues. Here's the setup: - Linksys wireless router is setup via DHCP - SB3 is setup via LAN connection to router (not wifi) - SqueezeCenter is loaded on a Dell laptop. This may be connected via WiFi or via LAN - iTunes is loaded on the laptop, but configured to point to a Western Digital 0.5 TB NAS (a very basic model); I've given up on the notion of having a NAS run solo for the money I'm willing to spend. - NAS is mapped on the laptop as a network drive Here's the problem: - In general, it works fine. I can rip CD's to the NAS, see the files in a directory, and play them back from either iTunes (on the laptop) or on the SqueezeBox (via the SB3 or SqueezeCenter) - Using the wifi connection, once in a while the wireless router develops brain lock and drops out. When this happens, iTunes appears to update the ITL and XML files on the local harddrive, and not on the NAS drive - How can I restore the itunes library files on the network drive such that SB3 will rescan?
