Not only that, but you also have to be sure that you are listening to
the same mastering/mix. Very often that is not the case and than you are
comparing apples & oranges, or from another perspective: in that case
you simply don't know what might be the reason for the songs to sound
different. It can be anything.

Agreed! Although I am running LMS for years now on a customized barebone
PC with Linux, the most straightforward way of running it these days is
indeed piCorePlayer however.
A self installed, customized system is IMO a poweruser solution and more
suited for specific use cases (like mine).

Running it on a RPI also has advantages because of the power consumption
compared to running it on a PC or NAS btw.

I am confused now. Imho transcoding within LMS from lossy to lossy is
only suitable for specific use cases and not something to implement as a
possible default for 'legacy codecs'. When transcoding legacy codecs is
needed it should be to a lossless format.

So I think Michael Herger has a point: the purpose of this initiative /
this thread needs more clarification.

My choice for lossy would be Opus as well. Personally I don't use it
BTW, because of the lack of prober gapless playback, in that department
Ogg/Vorbis is still hard to beat. However: looking into the future Opus
is for lossy the way to go IMHO.

No, I'm not logged in automatically; not on my desktop and not on my

You're right Michael. The thing is I don't know what to analyze further.
Today I again tried a 'clear librabry and rescan everything' with a
recent LMS build.
The scan seems to freeze/stop after the first to steps:

Discovering files/directories: /srv/data/music (37104 of 37104)
Complete 00:00:13
Scanning new music files: /srv/data/music (33169 of 33169) Complete
00:12:19

Latest entry in scanner.log:
[19-11-11 10:14:59.8102] Slim::Utils::Scanner::Local::__ANON__ (454)
Rescanning changed audio files (0)

Latest entry in server.log
[19-11-11 08:51:14.4117] Slim::Utils::Scanner::Local::__ANON__ (454)
Rescanning changed audio files (0)

And that's about it, nothing more is happening. The only solution is to
send a kill -9 to all LMS processes, do a manual restart of LMS
and start a scan via 'look for new and changed media files', which works
fine.

Any suggestions?

It is indeed true and amazing that we still have a lively community of
enthusiasts. On the other hand: I don't agree that the ecosystem is in
better shape than ever; in practice there is only one developer for LMS
and Spotty; the two fundamental building blocks used by almost every SB
user nowadays. I hope that in the near future more developers will be
able to contribute.

See the screenshot below with my plugin list before restarting and

The screenshot was made after choosing 'restart later' instead of

After a manual restart of LMS the plugin (new version) is back in the

Re: [slim] Spotify Question for Michael - Will it really go away?

2017-04-18 Thread zordaz

I dropped by this thread and also read the announcement on the Spotify
website that Libspotify will finally be phased out somewhere this year.
This is worrying news for the majority of the Squeezebox users I think.
So what surprises me is that apparently not many people seem concerned.
Or is it all happening behind the scenes?

The Squeezebox community was able to handle many challenges during the
years, but can it handle this one? So far it feels to me like a possible
final nail...
Or am I too pessimistic? Is it yet possible to find technical (and
legal) solutions to replace Libspotify? If so: do we already have any
clue in which direction to go?
