[slim] Additional Squeezebox player ?
Hi I'm interested in adding in another player - either Duet Receiver or Touch (I have 2 x Booms and 1 x Duet). Searching at the moment but obviously these are quite expensive often used items. Have found a New-other Touch for £200 on ebay - would this be a good purchase ? Didn't Logitech release a replacement product after terminating Squeezebox line that could work with my setup ? The only thing Logitech released after ending SqueezeBox players was the UE Radio which can be firmware updated to a SqueezeBox player. toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=99855 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Good suggestion, I'll also add the following alternatives for consideration. * Android device running either SqueezePlayer or SB Player, both available from Google Play Store. * Raspberry pi , possibly with a USB DAC, running either PiCorePlayer or squeezeplug. * 2nd hand O2 Joggler, again possibly with a USB DAC There's also options for running a software player on pretty much any PC, including some nice little Atom based quiet units. I'd suggest either Squeezeplay or Squeezelite as the software player. Hardware wise the Touch has a slightly superior DAC to a Duet or SB3. You can run ipeng in playback mode with good results if linked to a airplay receiver or a good digital dock. Only hardware is discontinued. Software is open source and can be used forever on all sorts of systems (win, mac, linux). Even if windows and OS move forward and won't run, you can create a virtual machine in some future windows computer and run a flavor of linux in that. If you like the Squeezebox hardware and software, get one and worry about the future when it becomes a problem, currently it isn't a problem and I believe LMS works on Windows 8 (unless I've missed something). Thanks to third party developers in the community I'm sure the Squeezebox is going to continue to work a long time after Logitech have completely abandoned it and at the moment Logitech is still maintaining the software and services related to the Squeezebox. From an outside perspective, it even looks like they are maintaining Squeezebox software better than the UE Smart Radio software (which are related to hardware products they still sell). I got a spare Touch fairly soon after Logitech announced that they would stop selling it, mainly because I love it and wanted to ensure I have a backup in case the main one breaks.
