I've found that quality blanks (TDK and Maxell) have aged just fine but
pre-recorded titles are likely to drag and squeal.

I still play reels, too!

Even more obscure, I use analog quadraphonic decoders and am disturbed
at the disappearance of multichannel analog inputs on most new
equipment.

[slim] Cable Connection Advice

2015-08-30 Thread kouta

I'm running a squeezebox touch connected to a Sony receiver using an
analogue cable. Both the Touch and receiver have digital and optical
connections. Will I notice the difference in sound if I change from
analogue cable to digital/optical cable? As a reference I've been
listening to the only flac files I have (Beatles remastered set) and to
my amateur ear it sounds pretty good with analogue connection. Also I'm
not a huge audiophile ...I never realised that one of my speakers
was out of phase until I ran the automated setup in the receiver! Any
advice greatly appreciated.

All of the SBT outlets are live simultaneously so it's easy to test and
see which sounds better.
It largely depends on the quality of the receiver. The SBTs DAC is
pretty good in its own right.

OK, it's a vintage system from the late 1970ies, but works like a

But to be honest, just yesterday, while at an event of experimental
electronic music, I bought 3 tapes by some of the artists there,
together with some 7 vinyl :)

I se and a good old Thorens ! i had a Thorens when i was younger .

Yes it's the latest thing to release on cassette again :) it's a bit
cute that electronica artist does it .

I had a half decent Alpine not thier best but decent . I've probably had
the only calibrated one ever, my dad took it to the technicians at the
pulic service radio (SR Sveriges Radio ) where he worked at the time and
had them tune it for me with calibrations tapes and whatnot's corect
azimuth for the tape head etc. I think my VU meters was actually correct
,they ar just a ligth show on most consumer machines :) Realy what a
horrible end user format less than 1% of the users could record
corretly on them . What about double speed dual cassete decks for copies
thats hifi :) (or not so much ) .

More OT trivia in the end it's life the actual tapes had better
performance than most players , not many could use the best metal tapes
potential . the heads saturated before the tape in the treble

You dont even get the subwoofer xover without going the digital path in
the reciever. analog passthru is usually strictly 2ch .

Or aditional listenings modes in my meridian system there are some that
actually works for music (not gimmics ) .

The analog sources are legacy sources even the crumiest of todays ADC
chips has no problem exceeding the performance of those.

Doing a simple thing like volume controll can actually be cheaper and
better in the digital domain (even budget recievers operates in floating
 piont and 24 bits ).
So you best reasonably priced preamp migth be the ADC to DAC route
anyway , those very expensive very good analog potentiometers probably
cost more then all the compenenents in a reciever.
Not to mention that tone controlls and balance would be much better done
 digitally .

it can actually be hard to hear any difference, if the recievers ADC is
good and its DAC is good the added noise thd im and whatnots may never
reach humanly perceptible levels especially in a normal home environment
 at reasonable volume levels .

*But in priciple i'm for using the digital inputs on recivers ,thats how
you are meant to use them anyway .*
They toss in analog ins for grannys old VHS or some old satelite
reciever you migth have :) i dont supose anyone has any cassettes left

But its good for some vinyl nostalgia , if you have an LP player .

That's a good point. My Receiver (Onkyo) does have an analogue path and
also a direct digital mode ie where it processes the digital signal as
is without any additional listening mode processing.
