Re: [slim] FLAC -DRM Free Music
Just a warning about hdtracks: I purchased an album from them last night in FLAC and was disturbed to find a Riptopia tag in the FLAC files. Turns out the files were ripped from CDs by Riptopia, a commercial CD ripping company. I would have hoped that the files available for download were (FLAC versions of) the original masters. It seems highly unlikely that Riptopia uses something like Exact Audio Copy to ensure error-free rips. How much of hdtracks' music is from CDs ripped by Riptopia, I can't say. -- dagordon dagordon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6804 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47931 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If someone is interested in free FLAC-DRMfree music, HDTracks is offering a free sample album on FLAC, 320Kbps MP3 or AIFF: http://www.hdtracks.com/ -- pichonCalavera *rip* (eac) *convert* (flac) *tag* (musicbrainz/mp3tag) *normalize* (replaygain/foobar2000) *albumart* (www) *transport* (winscp) *store* (debian) *rescan* (squeezecenter) *play* (squeezebox) *mix* (musicip) *listen* (sennheiser) *scrooble* (last.fm) *enjoy* (me :) pichonCalavera's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13068 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47931 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] FLAC -DRM Free Music
I have purchased a few songs (MP3s) from Amazon in the past but usually balk getting a lossy copy of a song. ~99.5% of my collection is FLAC ripped from my CD collection. I thought I'd post a note about my purchase experience of a FLAC album through Nettwerk Record's Store (http://www.werkshop.com/store/home.action). I decided to purchase the FLAC edition of Sarah McLachlan's Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff - Volume 2 released in April 08. $10.99 (US Dollar) For this album the site had track samples via real audio and the ability to purchase individual mp3 tracks but alas not individual FLAC tracks. I was really interested in picking up her cover of the Beatles Blackbird (also in the I Am Sam movie soundtrack). With only a few of the songs of little interest to me I made the purchase. The ZIP file download was quick enough (~650MB). The FLAC songs file names were not to my liking but were easily changed. What really surprised me was the lack of TAGs. This was readily corrected via foobar2000's freedb tagger. With the files/songs properly tagged I rescanned and all was well. The album sounds fantastic (not that I could really tell the difference between a FLAC and a ~160kb mp3). I prefer the FLAC so I can transcode those files/songs to play on other devices/media (CD-Rs for the car, SD card for my palm). I love that Nettwerk provides access to the majority of their artists via their own store. Overall the experience was painless. Obviously the files need to be properly tagged before they can be picked up by SqueezeCenter. One just has to make that part of the process just like you would with a ripped CD. -- bobharp Bob Harper bobharp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=600 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47931 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
