I loved the configurability of the SB3 - they way you could control
everything from the server, it remembered everything through all the
upgrades and you could get it to do whatever you wanted. Plugins like
SaverSwitcher, TitleSwitcher and the like have really made it a joy to
look at, and really informative. And easy to read from ten feet away.

I have a SB2 (unused at the mo), Boom and a Radio, and I see two
important things lost in the transition to SqueezePlay:

* Configuring menus from SBS
* General UI stuff (you can't even change the font size!) This again
should be done from SBS

Then there are display issues, reliability etc. Album artwork and
fancy menus are really a bit of a gimic to me. I love my Radio, and I
love my Boom, but for different reasons. One thing is common though,
and luckily it's the most important thing: sound quality is great.

Cheers Erland, I'll look into these - the custom clock in particular
looks very useful and spectacularly misnamed :)

Still much prefer the structure of the original Slim Devices approach.
The fact that I am having to retag all of my files to allow for the
Controller, Radio etc is enough (by the time you've done scrolling
through Symphony No XX in X major, Innominate, Op. XX - Orchestra,
Conductor to find out which conductor this is, you could have listened
to half the first movement!)

Why would you have to re-tag anything ? The browse menus looks the same
as the old devices, doesn't they ?

Or are you talking about using the built-in server (TinySC) on the
Touch which have a bit limited configuration possibilities at the
moment.

Wow, that looks really great. I must admit that I never bothered to
take a closer look because of the name, I already have too many clocks
in my home and don't really need yet another one. But if you can omit
the clock and use it just to display track information, this is exactly
what I've been looking for.

Now I can go and buy a Touch, without being concerned that I'll be
stuck with the standard NP screen. :)

You might want to look into:
- Screen Switcher applet (which is similar to what SaverSwitcher offers
on the old devices)

What settings are you talking about ?
If you are talking about settings you have changed from a user
interface that shouldn't be lost just because you make a firmware
upgrade.

Sounds like you may want to look at:

- Custom Clock applet and it's helper plugin Custom Clock Helper
-- Can show any title format, including custom tags scanned by the
Custom Scan plugin
-- See here for some samples of the possibilities:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_styles
-- See here for more information about it:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_applet
-- Or this thread in the 3rd party section:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68269
-- As with all my plugins/applets it's a little threshold until you
have learned how configure it, but just ask questions in the 3rd party
plugins section and we will get you over that threshold.
-- Yes, I know the name Custom Clock is a bit confusing but it
actually started as a simple clock applet which turned into something I
hadn't imagined from the beginning.

- The Information Screen applet/plugin combination may also be of
some use but all it's functionality is soon going to be available in
the Custom Clock applet.

Ironically, I may well end up slaving one to my Touch to use as a

Don't worry, it's just a matter of time.
The customization possibilities in the new devices are going to be a
lot better than the old devices, we now have access to the actual
firmware code and can do any modifications we like.

Re: [slim] I preferred the devices slim!

2010-04-11 Thread BlueScreenJunky

I couldn't agree more : I really like the simple devices with VFD
displays easily readable from a distance.
I have a SB3 and a SB Boom and use an android phone w/ squeezecommander
to control them, or the IR remote of course (and an harmony remote in
the living room). I'm perfectly happy with them and I have absolutely
no intention of moving to Radio or Touch... If I ever need a new
Squeezebox I'll probably try to find a second hand Classic :-/

I really wish logitech could make a squeezebox 4 : An updated SB3 with
a faster CPU to support 192Khz, more memory with more built-in codecs,
auto uplink, wifi n, maybe smoother scrolling of the titles and so
on...

Re: [slim] I preferred the devices slim!

2010-04-10 Thread JJZolx

If you don't like how the Controller works, then you certainly won't
like how the Touch works. A lot of settings on the Touch can't be set
from the server. Many settings, such as font size and menu order,
don't have any options at all.
