I'm mystified by this LMS product, Windows 7 comes with Windows Media
Center that can already do all this stuff in the Core OS and you can
plugin HDTV tuners for PVR and have SBS sitting on top doing Audio.

As SB products are G class I can imagine streaming HD/blu-ray via
wireless will be stutted heaven, assuming they would even be powerful
enough to cope.

So apart from being Google whats the point of the product? What am I
missing?

LMS is not added for existing Squeezebox products, the main product
that will use LMS functionality at the moment is Logitech Revue which I
believe also have 802.11n network. The only feature I expect might be of
interest on existing Squeezebox products is some kind of photo screen
saver on the Touch, but that hopefully has pretty low priority compared
to a lot of other things.

True, I was just trying to say that I personally can't see a big
need/usage of LMS among currently existing Squeezebox products. New
Logitech products and Logitech Revue feels like the main target from a
Logitech perspective, besides this it could probably also be used by
third party products but I'm not sure that's a big reason from a
Logitech perspective. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

2011-04-07 Thread MrSinatra

i think the current revue (not to mention googleTV) is an unqualified
disaster. i've kinda been assuming that their plan is to do a new
revue, which fixes a lot of the current ones issues.

i would not be surprised to see a touch version of server in a
revue2, where it uses the TV for a screen. (and android for a remote)

i am hoping it will be a full blown LMS in revue, but logitech seems to
always botch these things.

i absolutely agree that LMS/DLNA/Video and so on is all going in there
so that a users computer can support the revue, and i think thats a
good thing. (predicted it long ago)

 powered speakers or a Radio.

The SqueezeBox Radio, nice as it is, is just not a substitute for a
good stereo table radio. B*s* has proven that over and over for many
years running.

At the other end of the spectrum, one could do themselves quite well
with the purchase a Touch and high quality amp and great speakers. But
realistically, so many customers just don't have the interest,
knowledge or bank account to go there.

Bottom line: A stereo all-in-one table player, such as a Boom II, would
be a very compelling product for a great many customers. I hope it
shows up soon. I need to purchase some more.

[slim] Logitech Squeezebox Development

2011-04-05 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi,

I know SlimDevices preferred to keep quiet about developments which at
least saved us from a million is it ready yet? and FFS when will
they release it posts however I was looking at the Logitech porfolio
and the way it is slimming down (older products no longer being pushed
on their site) and wondering if this was just the natural cycle and
some refresh products are immiminent or if things are quietly in
decline.

Is there any signs of life from Logitech?

Thanks,
Fairy

PS- I have been happy with my SB3 and have only just bought a Radio to
add to my family. However I would like to see the family developing
over the years. I also value the fact that old platforms are not
ignored.

Thanks for the link bpa - I missed that thread. It's very interesting
to see other media being introduced into the server. I think they are
heading in the right direction as long as they don't totally abandon
the audio only solutions.

I didn't and must confess that in theory a video squeezebox is a good
thing. The issue with video is DRM and many do not wish to strip HiDef
DRM because of local legal restrictions or processing power.

I played with a WDTV for a time but the processing to make digital
copies of my films available in a useable format MKV/M2TS was power and
time intensive. Then I had occasional subtitle/audio encoding issues
and the time increased further. It became more convenient to get up
and change the BluRay disc over.

Ultimately this is probably the future and if it is ever as easy as my
audio life is then I will be happy.

I hope this is a positive sign for Audio products too.

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Development

2011-04-05 Thread eganders

There have been several threads over the past many months about forum
member's desires for new Squeezebox Products from Logitech. Reading
the posts above, and the referenced thread, the Logitech Media Server
with DLNA doesn't seem like it's close to being ready yet.

According to another recent thread, a reasonable SWAG for the release
of v.7.6 is around the June time frame. That also seems like a great
time to come out with a new product in preparation for this year's
holiday season.

Personally, I expect Logitech will release a new Squeezebox product or
two, one of which will probably be a new Boom with a GUI interface akin
to the Radio and Touch.

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Development

2011-04-05 Thread erland

Personally, I would be very happy if they decided to release some new
Squeezebox hardware but if you want me to realistic I don't expect to
see any new Squeezebox hardware this year. The current hardware is
state of the art in the market at its price range, it's the software
that needs improvement. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to happen much
on the software side besides things related to Logitech Revue and things
focused at decreasing the support/maintenance costs for Logitech.

The only hardware that makes sense at the moment is new hardware that
result in a decreased maintenance cost, to me this means that the only
thing that seems realistic is a Touch with more memory so the built-in
server works reliable. However, it's not like Logitech has indicated
that they think the built-in server have any problems, it has been
discussed a lot between community members but I've never seen any
Logitech representative acknowledge the problems.

A Boom with color display might seem nice but the only thing that makes
that interesting for Logitech is that it will make their manufacturing
easier since they don't need to ensure continued manufacturing of the
VFD displays. If they like to ease the manufacturing, they can
accomplish the same by just dropping the Boom and refer potential
customers to the Radio instead. I don't think people that would have
got the Boom would go to someone else, they would just buy a Touch with
powered speakers or a Radio.

I think Logitech will focus on new hardware related to the Revue
platform instead of the Squeezebox platform. The UPnP/DLNA stuff is a
strong indication in this direction, it's pretty obvious they add
UPnP/DLNA to improve Revue integration.

A separate server box might make some sense when LMS has been released
but the question I still ask myself is how many Revue users would be
interesting in buying an additional box, most Revue users would
probably just use a existing computer instead.

Of course, this is all just guesses, we have no idea what Logitech
really plans.
