Thanks guys. I am working my way through your recommendations now. I
am enjoying hearing a different perspective on the world. I think I
will try that news quiz now :-)

I recommend Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me with a caveat. It's kind of a
quiz show based on current events and much of it is US centric news, so
I'm not sure if someone outside the States would find it as amusing.

I subscribe to the podcast using the Mediafly app, just checked and you
can also get it via the NPR app.

Thanks Ron. I'll go explore their website. It's simply amazing how
much good entertainment is available across the globe these days. I
feel my life is enriched by hearing perspectives from other lands as I
shelter by my log fire in my little valley surrounded by Scottish
farmland.

If you're talking about this service:

http://www.npr.org/audiohelp/progstream.html

then all of the programs there are the closest you'll get to Radio 4 -
these NPR programs are pretty well the only generally available shows on
US radio which are intended for intelligent, moderate listeners.

The Fresh Air program from WHYY in Philadelphia, hosted by Terry
Gross, is frequently very interesting.

http://www.npr.org/programs/fresh-air/

For folks on the left here in the states, NPR often seems too safely
mainstream. They are apt to tune into Amy Goodman's Democracy Now!
program.

http://www.democracynow.org/

It's a testament to Goodman's journalist over-reach that even longtime
listeners will sometimes refer to the program as Conspiracy Now! But
they do keep listening.

[slim] NPR and CBC

2011-10-01 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi,

I have recently started listening to NPR 24 news stream and am
wondering if some kind North Americans could suggest NPR streams or
programmes that are interesting for a BBC Radio 4 listener...

Likewise I am struggling to find my way round the CBC streams but
suspect I am missing interesting content.

I am interested in economics, politics, intelligent debate but not
interested in sport chat. Interesting cultural programmes are good
too.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Fairy

Re: [slim] NPR and CBC

2011-10-01 Thread RonM

Re: CBC

If you go to http://www.cbc.ca/radio/, you will find links to various
programming. The list at the bottom of the page is blank a this
moment, but you can click on Radio 2 or Radio 1 or Radio 3 and go to
those respective networks, and details. At the top of the page, under
the picture, is a link to Schedules and Programs.

This will give you program content and times, etc. Most programs are
broadcast in at least four timezones, all available online (sadly,
mostly at low bitrates). Lots of great politics, arts and music
content. You might like Q with Jian Gomeshi, interesting program and
interesting guy.

Also lots of music. On the Radio2 site is a link to Concerts On
Demand, a repository of a very great many contests in all genres,
playable at will -- although it takes a bit of finesse to get them
playing through the squeezebox apps. But possible, let me know if you
want help with that.
