[slim] Re: Is this normal??
Nikos, I'm referring to wood floor and walls. The server is on the main floor and the SB2 is in the basement.about 15m distance.Concrete will likely be more difficult. These SMC's are actually directional, not omni as I said earlier. The model is SMCHMANT-6..they are like a square disc shape, about 8cm. I think they cost about $25 each. Cheers, Jim Hi Jim, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Hm,ok, wood floor walls + directional = high signal...it makes perfect sense now. Thanks for your feedback Cheers Nikos -- _NK_ _NK_'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25432 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

@Mark You're right. One of life's mysteries. Nah this is pure science.. :) The question is what scentific ground this behaviour is based on. Maybe Shawn can share some thoughts on this , regarding how the SB uses the signal received on its antennas and how it prioritizes its results.. No but I do accept donations. ;-) Wait in line pal I'm looking for sponsors too ;) 'Course the practical question would be, how does one of those super-duper high-gain 3rd party antennas work on the SB1/SB2? They work wonders on routers, much better than increasing transmit strength by all accounts, so they should work on the SB1/SB2. I'm sure they will and you wouldn't even need to install them on the SB, just on AP/router would be sufficient.. But: 1) I dont want to spend the $$ 2) dont want an 18dBi emitting possible harmful waves through my tiny head 24/7 ,since the couch where I'm sitting most of the time is directly in the line of path between the SB and the AP..I prefer to use less aggressive ways if possible 3) dont want to make my office room (where the PC and AP currently reside) even more ugly than it is now by installing a high gain yagi :) @Jim Not sure if this antennae fits this description, but I use two SMC omni's..one at the router and the other at the SB2. They didn't cost much. The separation is 1 floor plus several walls on opposite sides of the house. I average 85-90%. I tried disconnecting the SB antennae and it dropped to 45-50%. I think this is about what I saw when I used the original antennae. Hm, an 85-90 seems pretty impressive to me considering the location you mention. Are we talking about brick walls in between or just wood separation (sorry dont know the exact word) Could you plz tell me the model numbers of these SMCs antennas? Cost? Are you talking about simple, small omni antennas similar to the one the SB and most APs are equipped with? I currently use just 2 self made antenna dishes on the 2 antennas of my AP and that's it. Has helped really good since before that I could not use the SB where I wanted without stuttering and loss of connection to the SS. I now have a 35% with 4 rooms in between (brick walls and a brick bathroom with tiles all over)...although there is also a corridor between the 2 endpoints which sure helps a lot (although its NOT line of sight) Eventually I believe, figuring out how the SB implements the wireless section (2 antennas..diversity antennas maybe..prioritization..different cable quality between internal antenna and external antenna?..and so on..) , I'mpretty confident that one could squeeze the squeezebox to get more wireless juice.. :) Also what abt tuning the wireless card inside to transmit more dBi like they do for some Linksys APs? Can this be done programming-wise? Hmm..another happy victim ;) Thanks for your feedback Mark. Yes I know that the is a sec internal antenna but my question is why would this internal get a better signal..makes *no* sense.. Also does anyone know whether the SB2 deploys diversity antennas? Nikos PS:Mark do you have a wireless SB1 that you can use its antenna on the SB2 to see if the signal is even better? -thx- -- _NK_ _NK_'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25432 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi Khuli, yes the location does not affect the different behaviour between the two antennas. The old one gets always a better signal than the new one.. Do you have a similar setup that you can test? (SB1 wireless..SB2 wirless..switch antennas) Does anyone who has the above setup care to make a test and give us a feedback to try and pin this one down? This seems to be juicy (wireless_bandwidth-wise..) Also can someone test whether a wireless SB2 performs as good or maybe even better in distant locations (away from the AP in another room) when the external antenna is disconnected? _NK_ Wrote: Also can someone test whether a wireless SB2 performs as good or maybe even better in distant locations (away from the AP in another room) when the external antenna is disconnected? I can verify my SB2 signal strength increases when I disconnect the antenna. It's in the next room from my router. Signal strength is usually 90%. With the antenna disconnected it's 95%. :-) It employs an internal secondary antenna. Come on, doesn t anybody have an idea of why such behaviour should occur?? I mean we are talking about 10% better signal (comparing the two scenarios, not a 10% absolute increase). I'm sure this should be interesting enough for everybdy using wireless. [slim] Re: is it normal to see both .flac and .cue in Squeezebox
i just checked and my cue sheets are NOT embedded in flac - they are standalone. in 6.2,6.2.1,and 6.5b1, for most folders i see Browse Music--Browse Music Folders--Madonna--Ray of Light-- Madonna-Ray of Light.cue (1/2)--song1, etc.. Madonna-Ray of Light.flac (2/2)--Title: Ray of Light which is the same as 6.1, HOWEVER, for some other folders i now see Browse Music--Browse Music Folders--Madonna--Ray of Light-- Madonna-Ray of Light.cue (1/2)--Press Right to Add to Favorites Madonna-Ray of Light.flac (2/2)--Title: Ray of Light why do some cue sheets not let me get into them and instead tell me to Press RIGHT to add to favorites? -- JayNYC JayNYC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=121 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17817 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: is it normal to see both .flac and .cue in Squeezebox
Mine don't do that. Do your CUE sheets reference the FLAC files, or the original WAVs from which the FLACs were created? I forgot to update my first CUEs after compressing, and I believe it caused a very similar problem. -- Malor ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
