When you install software in XP, you either install it for each user, or
you install it for all users.

Since you want the short answer, reinstall the software for all users
as an adminstrator.

XP is not relevant (a misthink?) as the poster is using a Mac Powerbook.

What I was wondering was, whether when the second person logged in, 
the first person was logged out (in which case, slimserver would be 
expected to stop) or whether fast user switching was used, so that 
both users were logged in. If that were done, I would expect that 
slimserver for the original user would continue to work, but I have 
not checked it.

Yes, that's correct.  I missed the MacOS platform reference, and hence
deleted my foolish post.  Sorry for the mistep.
