Question: Do you think a SlimBox Receiver with an integrated amp would
sell?

- Yes
- No

The question is: do you think it will sell, not would you buy it.

I think it will sell. There are many things that sell, which I would
not touch with a 20 ft pole...

So, I would not buy a squeezebox with an integrated amplifier.
Unless... there are some ok speakers integrated with it as well, and it
is battery operated, so you can have some music on the go, around your
house within your wireless range... But.. that was also not the
question (and I would not buy that as a replacement for my current slim
devices in the house).

As for Branding... Logitech might consider using the same SqueezeCenter
platform, but the device would not be sold under the Slim division (so
not advertised under the Slim Devices website)... would keep us happy,
right (i mean, do we care about the other Logitech audio gear in this
forum?)

Cheers

Matt

I agree with Matt. The question was would it sell?

I think it would. Would I buy one? - no.

The Squeezebox/Duet is in a difficult place in the market. Many on this
forum consider it an audiophile product. How many other audiophile
products do you see on the shelves of PC World? (For our North American
cousins this is a large UK chain)

I was told that you can sell dog crap if you package it (promote it)
right. I don't think it would sell in any quantity to justify building
one. I also would not purchase it.

[slim] SlimBox Receiver with integrated amp?

I know there is another poll about building an external amp. I would
actually like to see something much simpler: A SlimBox Receiver with a
built-in amp.

Just like the Sonos, I would like to have something I just plug-in,
connect the speakers and go. I don't want to have to worry about
connections, power switching, multiple wall warts, hissing while the
music isn't playing, etc.

To go after the mass market, I really think they need this. The
average person can probably pick out some speakers, but I don't think
they want to mess with IR blasters, etc.

To be honest I think that you are asking exactly the same question as
the other thread.

Almost all the same points apply irrespective of whether the amp is
separate or included.

If you were to include one then the size would have to increase
significantly, you would restrict choice as to the amp as in what power
should it be, how much quality should it have, what speakers should it
be designed to drive at what level and impedence etc.

If you take a look at other threads I believe you'll see one or two
about boomboxes where a similar idea has been discussed.

In respect to the IR Blaster, that isn't necessary there are quite a
few fixed gain amps on the market that will also drop into standby when
the SB is turned off, I recall some discussion recent about the T-Amp
and it doing just that.

I really don't think the average Slim Devices customer would value a
product with a built-in amp. I'm pretty sure that SD and Logitech
undertake market research to determine what the market wants and what
it doesn't. For me, the product offering appears to be developing in
exactly the right direction.

Not to Flame, but if you want a Sonos, buy the over priced piece of
junk! Slim Devices is doing the right thing, no built in amp to jack up
the price. They have a superior product at a price better for the
consumer.
This is NOT an iPod or MP3 player. It is a Network Media Player that
will play high-resolution music files (FLAC). If you want a cheap amp
to go with any old speakers, buy one. Don't ask SD to waste time and
money on bad ideas. If you just have to have an amp solution built into
your SBR, buy a pair of AudioEngine2s and be done with it especially if
you are just playing MP3s. If you are listening to FLAC, buy a Duet,
nice amp, and a great pair of speakers being happy in the money you
saved over the over priced Sonos.

Or some nice powered speakers.
One can spend from $10 up to many thousands of dollars (pounds, euros,
etc.) on powered speakers. They work great with SqueezeBoxen, Duets, etc.

I don't think he is asking the same as my poll was. In fact, I think an
integrated amp into a later version of a Squeezebox Receiver probably
*would* sell to select customers. Is it a good idea though?

I dunno, I'd just assume see a separate amp that could be used for all
Slim products instead (Squeezebox, Receiver, or Transporter - though
customers who have $2K to drop on a Transporter would unlikely be
interested).

I would. I guess many people who have multiple SB's and don't like to
own multiple amps would agree. From SD's POV I probably wouldn't add a
built in amp, because, unless it would be really top class (=expensive)
it would damage the company's audiophile credibility, which is one of
their important points. I already got my multiple amps anyway and
powered speakers are a good alternative.

Peter
